Don’t waste your time. The author spends the first chapter discussing how the Tao cannot be explained through history, and then proceeds to give only historical accounts of tea (which is the redeeming aspect of it). The book reads like a poorly written stream-of-consciousness work in which the author frequently restates previous thoughts, uses the same words multiple times in a single sentence, and mixes up words such as writing “accept,” when he meant to write “except.” Beyond the glaring grammatical faux pas, the author hints at his sexism and white-privilege to the extent that I stopped bothering to read part way through chapter three. Spare yourself the time and seek out better books on tea and Taoism.

Such a profound book about tea. You would think it’s about tea, but it’s about much more than that.

There are so many deeper layers and under layers to this book that I’ll definitely re-read it again.

If you’re like me and you just started your journey into the beautiful world of tea - this book is for you.

Author discusses the history, philosophy, technique and many inner levels of the human existence.

Here’s a few quotes that stuck with me:

“Nothing is guaranteed in this life. It’s all a gift. We have no right to it, we didn’t earn it and we don’t get to keep it as long as we want to. We don’t even get to know when our lease is up. It has been granted to us through some extraordinary fate, and everything can change in a flash. We just never know. We may not live out this very day.”

Lu Yu: “always sip tea as if it were life itself.”

“The Way is one of truth, finding ever-expanding and clearer viewpoints of the World, as it is. As it is, not as you would like it to be.”

“Soon silence will have passed into legend. Man has turned his back on silence. Day after day he invents machines and devices that increase noise and distract humanity from the essence of life, contemplation, meditation...tooting, howling, screeching, booming, crashing, whistling, grinding, and trilling bolster his ego. His anxiety subsides. His inhuman void spreads monstrously like a gray vegetation.” author quotes Jean Arp.

It’s a life changing book. I’d give it 10 stars if I could. ✨🌱🍵

2023 reads, 5/12:

“By being quiet and present to the tea, on the inside, we are sharing ourselves with the moment. The tea, once a plant – rain, earth, and sky – is now becoming human, a part of the stream of human consciousness.”

This book was a great introduction to the history of tea as a meditation. Right from the beginning, Fisher tells us that the subject of tea, meditation, and Taoism could fill volumes, and that this book doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface. Instead, he goes above and beyond to give his own insights as someone living a life of meditation and clarity (and tea!), with some information about tea history and traditional ceremonies. It was a great book, and I enjoyed reading it during my tea sessions.

Niesamowicie pięknie i prosto nauczył czytelnika ceremonii picia herbaty.
