A pitch-perfect rural romance of community and family from the bestselling author of Bottlebrush Creek.
Lara McIntyre and journalist Toby Paxton are thrust into the limelight when an accident puts the beating heart of their community in jeopardy.
The small country town of Bridgefield can't manage without their general store and post office, but Lara can't stomach the idea of out-of-town buyers running it into the ground either.
With the help of the close-knit community, they rally together to save the general store. Featuring a black tie ball, a fun run, a magpie called Vegemite and a snake-chasing kelpie called Basil, Magpie's Bend is a story about rural lives, family, love and letting go.
'A ripping good read…Maya's deep understanding of living in country Australia and down-to-earth good humour gives her story great authenticity…We can't wait for the next book to find out what happens to another member of the McIntyre sisterhood.' - Australian Country on Bottlebrush Creek

Lara McIntyre was shocked to find General Store/Post Office owner Mrs Beggs semi-conscious under boxes out the back of her shop when she arrived for her mail. Lara was a nurse, so immediately assessed the patient while Toby Paxton, local newspaper journalist, called the ambulance. When the elderly Mrs Beggs decided to sell her business, Lara and the local Bridgefield residents came up with a plan for the community to buy the general store, instead of the outside influences they were afraid would take the heart out of the small country town.
Fundraisers, raffles, a singles ball, fun runs and more – the effort everyone put in was gratifying. Lara worked hard, but so did everyone else. Her family – father, sisters and brothers-in-law – all stepped up to the plate. And Toby, with the help of his newspaper, advertised what was happening, encouraging others to participate. Evie, Lara’s daughter, was away in Ballarat at boarding school, while Holly, Toby’s daughter also lived in Ballarat with her mother. The two girls became good friends. But something went badly wrong…
Magpie’s Bend is the third novel by Aussie author Maya Linnell and I loved it. Maya Linnell is fast becoming a favourite author and after reading her first two – Wildflower Ridge and Bottlebrush Creek and loving them – and now her latest, I feel confident in saying her novels will always satisfy. Set in country Victoria, Australia, where many towns mentioned are places I’ve been to and remember, I enjoyed the settings and descriptions; the two main animal characters – Basil the kelpie and Vegemite the magpie – were perfect alongside the rest of the country town characters. Magpie’s Bend is a fabulous read which I highly recommend.
With thanks to Allen & Unwin for my ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.
When Lara McIntyre arrived at the general store/ post office to collect her mail she never expected to find the owner, Mrs Beggs under boxes out the back of the store. Luckily Lara was a nurse and knew what to do while Toby Paxton, a local journalist, called an ambulance.
Not long after her accident word gets around that Mrs Beggs will have to sell her business, so Lara rallies around the local community to try and save the general store. Lara is hopeful that with the support of the community they can raise enough money through fundraisers, raffles and fun runs. Toby was a great help for Lara and they found themselves spending a lot of time together whilst organizing different events to raise money for their community, in fact the whole community came together as one and everyone took part in helping as much as they could, but would it be enough to save their general store?
Magpie’s Bend by Australian author Maya Linnell was a truly beautiful story with strong characters and beautiful settings. With detailed descriptions throughout the story which made the reader feel as if you were right there with the characters. Having read a couple of books by this author, now I must say I really enjoy her writing style and she is fast becoming another favorite author of mine, so if you haven’t read this book, then I suggest you do yourself a favor and grab a copy as you won’t be disappointed. Highly recommended.
I loved Lara and Toby's story - Magpie's Bend is a lovely rural fiction/romance, not my usual genre at all but Maya Linnell has a way of drawing her readers into her stories. These are people you would want to be friends with, who you would want on your side when the going gets tough. It was like a big hug, the kind of book that you want to read with a cuppa and a cake. I was sad when it was time to say goodbye.
It starts with Lara McIntyre and newcomer to town and journalist Toby thrown together by an accident in the local general story. It is the start of an up and down relationship for these 2 single parents. When that same store is in danger of being sold to out of towners, Lara brings the whole town together to save it and keep it for the community. With fundraisers, raffles and fun runs happening, there is never a dull moment in Bridgefield. Will Lara and Toby realise that they are meant to be together before it is too late.
So many things that I loved about this book but here are some highlights:
A magpie called Vegemite Basil the kelpie All the baking - really made me hungry and made me wish that I was friends with Lara Lara's love of F.R.I.E.N.D.S
It really is a delightful read that had this crime and thriller reader feeling the love.
Thanks to Allen and Unwin for my advanced copy of this book to read. Released in Australia June 1st
**Thank you to the author (and her publisher Allen & Unwin) for getting in contact and sending me a free copy of this novel, I am very appreciative; published 1 June 2021**
Bush nurse Lara and rural journalist Toby are thrust into the limelight when an accident puts the beating heart of their community in jeopardy. The small country town can't mandate without their general store/post office, and Lara struggles with the idea of out-of-town buyers changing it completely. She is also unsure where newcomer Toby's allegiances lie in this fight. Loyalties are put to the test as the locals attempt to save the shop; with personal agendas, old grudges and misunderstandings threatening their best efforts.
I was excited to receive this book after really enjoying the author's previous book, Bottlebrush Creek (which was about Lara's sister Angie). In this one we get to experience Lara's story. What I love about this book is that while I am a suburbia girl, I feel like I get to experience this rural small town vibe where everyone is connected in some way. The concept of a whole community banding together to save their general store is just lovely, as is the closeness of Lara's family. I also love that this author has nailed the right percentage (for me) of domestic drama and light romance. It's really easy to read and engaging; you'll find yourself hoping Lara and Toby get together and that the town has a happy ending with the store. Overall: I would happily recommend this novel for those that enjoy Australian rural fiction featuring some drama and romance.
A glowing front cover quote from Australian celebrity Catriona Rowntree immediately piqued my interest in Magpie’s Bend, the third novel from rural romance specialist Maya Linnell. With lashings of country charm, a wholesome romance, small town constraints, intervening family issues and a gaggle of memorable animal characters, Magpie’s Bend is a true delight.
With 2019 release Wildflower Ridge and 2020 production Bottlebrush Creek under her belt, popular Australian rural fiction author Maya Linnell published her third novel, Magpie’s Bend in June 2021. In a fitting tribute to regional Australian and the strength of community ties, Magpie’s Bend is another heart-warming rural tale from former country journalist Maya Linnell. It is time for bush nurse Lara McIntyre to get her time in the spotlight, as Lara grapples with her feelings for local journalist Toby Paxton. When these two lonely souls are thrust together in tragic circumstances, they must pool their resources together to save the local community hub from ruin. With the owner of the local general store in serious ill health, a plan of action is put in place by hardworking nurse Lara. In an attempt to save the town store and post office from developers, Lara must also fend off personal issues, conflicts and arguments if she is rescue the store. As the town rallies together as best they can through events such as a fun run and ball, the characters of this tight knit community will learn a thing or two about relationships, support, connection, love and release.
Maya Linnell is a much-loved author in our country and she recently experienced great success when her previous novel Bottlebrush Creek secured a position in the lucrative Better Reading Top 100 reading list. I have rated Linnell’s previous books highly so I couldn’t wait to get started on Magpie’s Bend. Maya Linnell’s third release really was a dear novel that I enjoyed very much.
After spending time in the small Western Victorian town of Bridgefield in the previous two stories by Maya Linnell, it was so nice to return to this embracing township once again in Magpie’s Bend. With the stunning green pastures, the lovely wildlife inhabitants, the majestic trees and mountain ranges to keep me company it was a pleasure to revisit this quaint country locale. Drawing on her own experiences of living in a small country community, Maya Linnell injects plenty of realism, genuine warmth and appreciation for this mode of living. A spot of page-based bush travel was exactly what I needed to nourish my city soul, so I thank Maya Linnell for my book trip to regional Australia.
As a city-based dweller on the west coast of Australia, it is hard to appreciate the issues that are at stake in our rural townships. Linnell’s fictional town of Bridgefield goes through quite a crisis when this story begins as the local general store falls into possible closure due to the ill health of the owner of this establishment. I got the feeling that this scenario is perhaps becoming more common than we realise and it is a real threat to the way small remote communities operate. Magpie’s Bend draws our attention to the overall decline of essential services in these isolated communities. The townspeople of Bridgefield get quite creative as they find ways to save their vital community hub. I enjoyed being a part of this sense of comradery as the locals fought hard to rescue this crucial service.
Love is always on the cards in Maya Linnell’s rural fiction novels and Magpie’s Bend is no different from the norm. Lead character Lara is well matched to local journalist Toby. While Lara has serious reservations about entering into any kind of partnership due to her difficult past, Toby is much more open to love. The love story featured in Magpie’s Bend is kind, gentle, soft and heart-warming, which is just how I like my romance novels. With some interfering family members and a fantastic bunch of animal pals that felt like human companions, Magpie’s Bend travels to a fulfilling final curtain call.
Magpie’s Bend was a sincere, sweet, gratifying and very favourable addition to the Australian rural romance class. I can’t wait for my next Maya Linnell rural fiction screening!
*Thanks extended to Allen & Unwin for providing a free copy of this book for review purposes.
I have been really looking forward to this story, I know when I pick up a Maya Linnell book that I am going to transported to county Australia and meet some very strong, capable and loving heroes and heroines, characters who can step up to the mark when needed for anything their neighbour and town needs and I know I am going to be left smiling. We are back in Bridgefield with the McIntyre family and this time Lara finds her hero in journalist Toby Paxton.
Lara has been to hell and back but is now keeping herself very busy with her nursing, running, baking and of course her beautiful daughter Evie, she does not at all want a man in her life again but when there is an accident at the general store and post office, new guy in town Toby who is running the local paper is there to help and Lara feels the first inkling of something she hasn’t felt for many years.
Toby has moved here for a short time before he looks at something bigger in Ballarat he is a single dad to teenage Holly and a keen photographer and loves running, he is happy working on the local newspaper and getting to know the people who live here, but when he meets Lara at the general store and snaps a few photos she is not happy with him but she does make an impression on him.
The accident sees the need for the town to pull together to keep their general store running and Lara steps in to help and they form a committee to save the shop, there are fundraisers to organise, lots to do, Lara and Toby spend a lot of time together organising the fun run and other events and a friendship begins and Lara’s feelings are all over the place, and Toby is wanting to get closer, he knows about her past and is so caring, they have a lot of hurdles to cross before they find the love they both deserve.
I love being immersed in a story that is filled with emotion, love and happiness and this one is such a story it is a feel good story filled with fabulous characters that have become friends, I was cheering the town on and I had so much fun at the fundraisers and the baking wow such gorgeous cakes and biscuits and then there are the flowers and animals everything that is sure to make a fabulous rural romance and this one ticks to boxes.
This was a gorgeous story one that I didn’t want to finish I could have kept reading for many hours more, I loved Lara’s strength and vulnerability and Toby’s understanding and caring ways and his socks. I smiled all the way though, cheered Lara and Toby to find that love and happiness and was sighing when they got there. Thank you Maya Linnell for another awesome story, I loved this one so much and am looking forward to many more stories.

My Thoughts /
Bestselling rural fiction author, Maya Linnell, gathers inspiration from her rural upbringing and the small communities she has always lived in and loved.
Did you know, Magpie’s Bend is the third book Maya Linnell has written about the McIntyre sisters? No you did not, I hear you say? Well, consider yourself hereby advised! (oh, full disclosure, I didn't know either.)
When Bridgefield’s only general store owner is injured, it seems inevitable the store and will need to close or be sold. But the small community of Bridgefield realise they cannot manage without their local store. Enter Lara - local district nurse, single mother, and, second eldest of the McIntyre sisters. Lara McIntyre reluctantly finds herself leading a campaign to ensure the services of the town's general store aren’t lost to the community. Enter, Toby Paxton, who just happens to be the one-man team at the local newspaper and new to the town. Toby just happens to be in the right place at the right time to lend a hand when Mrs Beggs (the general store owner) falls from a ladder in the store. We all know that life can at times hurl some tough doo-doo your way, and the last thing Lara McIntyre wants is a nosy newspaper reporter (no matter how good looking), poking around. Nope, nada, absolutely not…..doesn't want the distraction……even if he is handsome……even if he is the first man since the very public collapse of her marriage to pique her interest (and raise her heart rate!). [Lara was the victim of domestic abuse by her ex-husband whom she only managed to escape when he was jailed for unrelated crimes.]
So, how do you go about raising enough money to buy a town's only general store? I'm glad you asked. Fundraisers, raffles, a B&S ball, fun runs and more! It seems everyone was willing to step up to the plate and do their bit - her family – father, sisters and brothers-in-law, and, Toby. Lara and Toby begin to spend a lot of time together organising the fundraising events and a friendship begins. Lara’s feelings are all over the place- she just needs his help to save the store. United in their efforts, Lara begins to feel that (perhaps) there might be more to life than living alone, embittered and single. Hmmm, is the odd sock wearing journalist the one to bring new love and hope into her life once again??
Linnell’s writing is genuinely authentic and reads effortlessly. It has a distinctly Australian feel without feeling hackneyed or clichéd. I loved the focus on community as the townspeople rally to save their general store - small town, big heart. Plus, there are bonus points because you get a magpie called Vegemite; a kelpie called Basil, and - ALL the lip smacking goodness of country baking and homemade pies a person could want!
Now you'll have to excuse me while I rush off to the library to read Penny and Angie's story….
Magpie’s Bend is Maya Linnell’s third engaging contemporary romance novel featuring the McIntyre sisters in rural Victoria.
When Bridgefield’s only general store owner is injured and decides to sell up, local nurse, and single mother, Lara McIntyre reluctantly finds herself leading a campaign to ensure it’s services aren’t lost to the community. She doesn’t want the distraction of handsome newcomer, journalist Toby Paxton, even if he’s the first man since the public collapse of her disastrous marriage to pique her interest, she just needs his help to save the store.
The second eldest of the McIntyre sisters, Lara is a lovely character. A dedicated community nurse, she enjoys running, baking and managing her small holding. She is the mother of thirteen year old Evie, who has recently enrolled in boarding school and Lara is struggling somewhat with her absence. The victim of domestic abuse by her ex-husband whom she only managed to escape when he was jailed for financial crimes, Lara is still wary of men and reluctant to trust her heart.
Toby is also a single father whose teen daughter, Holly, lives with her mother in Ballarat, visiting every other weekend. His move to Bridgefield is calculated to advance his career at a city paper, though he is finding he enjoys the lifestyle the town affords him as a keen runner, and the opportunity to indulge in his passion for photography.
I enjoyed the romance between Lara and Toby which Linnell develops slowly but organically, respecting Lara’s past trauma. Lara’s family can’t help but meddle a little wanting the best for their sister. Toby is very patient as Lara stubbornly refuses to admit her interest in him, but just as it seems he has found his way past her defences, Lara learns something that seems to confirm her worst fears.
There are lots of delightful elements to this story. I love the focus on community in Magpie’s Bend as the townspeople rally to save their general store. The shop is much more than a convenience for Bridgefield locals, and they fight hard to save it. There are some charming animal ‘characters’, including a dog named Basil and a baby magpie named Vegemite, and a range of delicious homemade pies.
Magpie’s Bend is a heartfelt, winsome and satisfying rural romance, a delightful read I enjoyed over a long weekend.
Such a fabulous read! Big congrats to Maya Linnell for producing a heart-warming tale of love and second chances. The small-town community is beautifully rendered and thanks to this book, my desire for a tree-change has grown ever-stronger. Highly recommend.
Maya simply has a way of writing that makes the characters come alive from the pages. There is so much love and warmth in the McIntyre family and the community. Maya makes you feel like you are part of the story with them. Every time I finish a book by Maya, I feel a huge hole in my heart as I say goodbye to the McIntyre family until next time.
Another outstanding piece of writing by Australian author Maya Linnell, with the story of another McIntyre sister, Lara a nurse in the small country town of Bridgefield. After leaving her toxic marriage, Lara has built a life for herself and her teenage daughter, Evie in Bridgefield and is well known and well liked amongst the community.
Mrs Beggs, the local general store owner has no option but to look after her health and sell the general store and post office after a recent accident in the store. Lara and single father newcomer rural journalist Toby Paxton were thrown together helping Mrs Beggs after Lara found her under some boxes in the back of the store. But if first impressions are anything to go by, Toby did not make a good one in Lara’s eyes.
Lara can not stomach the idea of out-of-towners buying the general store with all their fanciful ideas to changes things up like some hip city café and soon comes up with an idea to save the general store but she needs the help of the locals! Lara calls a town meeting to share her idea and sets up a fund-raising committee to organise ways to hopefully raise enough funds to buy the store as a community.
Meanwhile, Lara’s thoughts on Toby soon start changing as he supports and assists Lara whole heartedly to raise funds to help save the store. Feelings start to blossom between the two, but is Lara willing to trust enough to open her heart to love again?
Pick yourself up a copy of Magpie’s Bend to find out!
Magpie's Bend is Lara McIntyre's story and as with the previous books all McIntyre sisters pop in and out of the story showing what a close-knit family they are.
Lara is a single mother to teenager Evie, who is at boarding school. When the general store owner has a fall and ends up in hospital the whole town , led by Lara, pitches in to help run the store.
Journalist Toby Paxton is new to town and Lara has caught his eye. Their first meeting didn't go so well and now he is eager to make a good impression volunteering to help out at the store.
Magpie's Bend is a fabulous story that showcases country community spirit with everyone helping with the store and fundraising events including a singles ball. I love that Maya's love for baking makes its way into all her books.
We get a little of Lara's backstory and find out why she values her privacy. The community is tight-lipped as they close around one of their own. Can Lara put her trust in someone again and find love?
Magpie's Bend is a super sweet, clean romance story that is more about the community than the burgeoning romance between Lara and Toby. It's a slow burn romance but we still get that much anticipated HEA.
Magpie's Bend is my third novel, and after months of dreaming up Lara McIntyre's story, writing it and editing, the thrill still hasn't worn off! I love featuring strong women, and threading issues from real life into fictional plot lines. Lara McIntyre - a bush nurse, long distance runner, single mother and baker - is the leading lady in this novel. She's always shied away from the spotlight, but when her local general store comes under threat, she is forced to leap into the spotlight to try save the store.
I threw a newcomer - country journalist Toby Paxton - into the mix, as well as a kelpie called Basil, and loved seeing what lengths they'd go to in the interests of community spirit. If you like small towns, bustling big families and second chances, you'll love Magpie's Bend. Available June 1 in paperback, eBook and audioBook.
Thank you Allen & Unwin and Maya for sending us a copy to read and review. It’s real, relatable and Maya writes from the heart. Nurse Lara McIntyre has survived a disastrous marriage and lives for the community and when an accident in the local store brings newcomer journalist Toby Paxton into her life, Lara thinks maybe there’s a second chance at love. As the small town of Bridgefield come together to save the general store, loyalties are questioned, there’s lots to organise for fundraising and of course family meddling. But deep down both have an attraction they cannot ignore. Reading a book from this very talented author is like revisiting family, the ups and downs of life and checking in with friends. Maya has the gift of making the reader feel at home. The story is very Australian and has some iconic features to this country including a magpie called Vegemite. Beautifully written, heartfelt, warm and tender and gives you all the feels. With family dynamics, community spirit, a natural attraction and romance, a selection of furry friends and good old fashioned fun and entertainment you can’t go wrong with the McIntyre sisters trials and tribulations. Maya has first hand knowledge from working and living a farm life so we know we are getting a very trustworthy and honest experience when picking up a book with her name on it. Comfortable with amples of authenticity and a dash of romance. So grab a copy and enjoy your escape to the country.
Magpie's Bend is a lovely rural romance by Maya Linnell. When Bush Nurse Lara McIntryre realises the local shop and post office owner wanted to sell after an accident in the stop that will stop her looking after the shop decided to sell. Lara McIntryre did not wish to have an outsider coming in and destroying the role of the community shop decided to organise a committee to raise enough money to buy the shop. The local journalist Toy Paxton also got involved in the fight. However, Lara did not know what side Toby was on. The readers of Magpie's Bend will continue to follow Lara and Toby to find out what happens.
Magpie's Bend is another fantastic book by Maya Linnell. I have no problem engaging in Maya Linnell's books, and Magpie's Bend did not disappoint. I did have trouble putting this book down. I love Maya Linnell's portrayal of her characters and how they intertwine with each other throughout this book. Magpie's Bend is well written and researched by Maya Linnell. I like Maya Linnell description of the setting of Magpie's Bend that allowed me to imagine living in a rural community.
The readers of Magpie's Bend will learn about the importance of a rural community. The readers of Magpie's Bend will also learn about the consequences of illegal sexting people without their consent.
Reading this book was like catching up with family and friends I haven't seen since last year - pre-COVID! I love the McIntyre family and all the characters that live in and around Bridgefield. Maya Linnell brings this community to life in all its vivid glory. I could smell the food and the countryside. I could hear the birds and the cows. I could see Toby's flower patches and the beautiful grounds of the family homestead. Best of all, I truly could get inside the heads of both Lara and Toby, thanks to Linnell's brilliant writing. She just keeps getting better - hard to believe, but it's true - with each book. If you want to know what it's like living in rural Australia, you must read Maya Linnell. Be warned, you'll get nothing else done the moment you start reading until you reach THE END!
Beautifully written from the opening pages. The story starts with Lara McIntyre thrown into a crisis - along with Toby Paxton (new to Bridgefield). You will be hooked. The story then unfolds from Lara and Toby's perspectives in third-person - with first person thoughts in italics. You will love the strong female characters - The McIntyre sisters. This is Lara's story. A Rural Australian tale about family, community, about banding together in a crisis, and about looking out for your own. You will wish you lived in this close-knit community. You will feel immersed in the baking, flowers, fundraisers, and pets (Basil and Vegemite). Maya has a way of poetically engaging her readers - close your eyes and you feel like you are in Bridgefield. A story about learning to love and trust again. If you have read the first two you will love the little recaps found throughout. If you haven't then these offer an insight to the past. You might also pick up on the little hint about what Diana's story will be about. You don't need to have read the first two, however do yourself a favour and go out and get yourself a copy and read them both before Magpie's Bend is released on June 1st.
1. Beautiful and evocative rural setting 2. Romance that gives you butterflies 3. Characters that feel like friends by the time you finish the last page 4. Escapism! 5. Recipes to make your mouth water
Magpie’s Bend is beautifully written and the Australian rural landscape leaps off the page. This is a story of community, friendship and letting go of the past.
I absolutely devoured this book.
Thank you to Maya and Allen and Unwin for the Advanced Copy in exchange for an honest review.
I read this book on the flight home from Australia. The author is Australian and the book reflects much of what I saw and experienced there. It’s a Hallmark book set in the Australian bush. An easy & fast read.
This is not my usual genre but I enjoyed this one! The characters were lovable and I liked the small country town vibes. This is third in a series and I wonder whether I missed out on some of the family dynamics having not read the previous two books, but I do think you could read it as a standalone. It was a light, easy read with lots of charm. The romance takes a bit of a back seat to the story of the community and the general store, which this romance-loving-reader actually really liked! I couldn’t help picture this as a TV series – it would be one that you binge watch because you fall in love with the characters and can’t wait to see what they get up to next. • Overall, this was a wholesome, lovely book with lots of heart. I’m not sure that this will be my go-to genre going forward – it is maybe a little too wholesome for me – but I’m glad I branched out and gave this book a go.
This book was kindly gifted to me by the publisher. All opinions are my own.
Another splendid rural fiction tale from the ever-reliable and bestselling Australian author, Maya Linnell. I was lucky enough to receive an advanced reader copy and couldn't wait to throw myself into the life of another McIntyre sister. So far we've heard Penny's story in Wildflower Ridge, Angie's story in Bottlebrush Creek, and now, it's Lara's turn in Magpie's Bend. Magpie's Bend is a heart-warming read with loveable characters (including the feathered and furred variety), and a page-turning narrative. Blending the best of rural life from living on the land among the beautiful landscapes to the struggles of small-town businesses, Linnell captures the essence of reality in rural Australia. And in particular the strength and resilience of these communities and the people within. Strong plot, characters whom you will grow to love, fun, and romance, what's not to love. Linnell has nailed it yet again.
The most comfortable coming home hug ever. So heartfelt, endearing, comfortable, warm and heartwarming. Every McIntyre sister has been my favourite. I just love Lara’s story. I love the trust, community spirited, romance and friendship I found here. I loved the slice of country life I l lived vicariously through. It isn’t all lightness and fluff, there are heavy themes of domestic violence and loneliness here as well, but for me they just add to the complete world Wildflower is. I love the flowers, the baking, the friendship and family..I also very much loved the friends love and who doesn’t love the nutbush...maybe I wouldn’t recommend reading it on a diet, I couldn’t get to the scones with homemade jam and cream fast enough 🤗
I really enjoy reading Maya's novels, the characters are believable and the settings are in locations that are familiar to me. I've lost reading mojo a bit this year, but think this one may have helped to bring it back.
Welcome to Bridgefield — a small country town with a big-hearted community at its core.
Magpie’s Bend is Maya Linnell’s third novel following the lives of the McIntyre sisters. It’s a straight-from-the-heart warm and relatable story that led me on a reminiscent journey back to the country town where I grew up. As the pages flew by I found myself indulging fond memories of my childhood.
Linnell’s writing is authentic and enticing, you can almost smell the cakes baking, hear the magpies warbling at sunrise and feel the camaraderie of the community’s spirit as it comes together save the day...
The local general store and post office also holds the enviable reputation as serving the best homemade pies around. When the shop’s owner, Mrs Beggs takes a tumble and ends up in hospital, it’s clear she can no longer manage. Making the heartbreaking decision to sell sets off a chain reaction that will change many lives, none more so than Lara McIntyre, the local Bush Nurse.
Toby Paxton’s the new guy in town running the newspaper. Toby and Lara’s worlds collide on the day of Mrs Beggs’s accident. As sparks fly and tempers rise, Toby discovers Lara’s as stubborn and tough as she is breathtaking. They’re smitten, but Lara refuses to acknowledge her feelings and instead concocts a plan to save the store from ending up in the hands of a non-local.
What follows is a endearing story that demonstrates how far a community will go to protect and preserve its history and local culture.
There are so many things to love, the well-meaning meddling of Lara’s family, the huge heart that beats strong with community spirit, and the slow-burning romance between Lara and Toby. And then there’s Basil the Kelpie, Vegemite the magpie and a host of farm animals at every turn.
Linnell’s obvious passion for food and baking is sprinkled lovingly throughout, leaving you longing for a country vacation and craving homemade cakes and a cuppa.
Magpie’s Bend will captivate your heart, entice your tastebuds and weave it’s way into your emotions in the most delightful ways.
Always eager for the next book about the McIntyre Sisters, Magpie's Bend is book number three for Maya Linnell. Like I have said previously these books are like coming home and always leave me eager for the next instalment.
Magpie's Bend is based on Lara McIntyre, a Bush Nurse and Toby Paxton a rural journalist. When they first come together sparks fly but for the wrong reasons. She finds him hopeless in a medical emergency and she snaps at him when he takes her photo during the incident at the General Store - what type of person takes pictures when they should be helping, she thinks plus she does not like images being taken without her consent.
With Mrs Beggs injured and unable to return to her business she breaks the news that she is going to have to sell up. The town of Bridgefield rally to keep the general store and post office open while it is for sale and Lara struggles when the buyers come visiting full of unsuitable ideas for revamping the General Store. This business is the heart and soul of the town from the homemade pies, visits to pick up the mail, and kids it employs in the school holidays.
Can the community save the business? Can Lara trust Toby after already being hurt previously by her ex-husband?
I love that the books always feature the rest of the McIntrye family and we get an update on their lives. Book one Wildflower Ridge was Penny and Tim's story while book two Bottlebrush Creek was Angie and Rob.
I think we need to petition Netflix as I would love to see these books come to life on our screens, beautiful stories that showcase rural life in Australia. Magpie's Bend had me chuckling many times and I loved Vegemite the Magpie. I highly recommend adding Maya's books to your bookcase as they will be favourites to be re-read over the years. Already anticipating book 4!!!.
Thank you to Maya and Allen & Unwin for my copy of Magpie's Bend to read and review.
Once again we return to the story of the McIntyre sisters who have featured in Maya's two previous novels. This time it is Lara's story. After leaving a disastrous and dangerous marriage Lara is now on her own and runs classes for seniors and mums to be as a nurse. She has built a wall around her and the light in her life is her daughter who is away at boarding school and only comes home infrequently.
Toby Paxton has just moved to Bridgefield as the editor of the flailing local newspaper with the promise that he will get a promotion back in Ballarat if he does this sabbatical. He also has a daughter who he rarely sees.
When the owner of the General Store takes ill, there is the threat that it will have to be sold as she can no longer run it with her health issues. The General Store is a vital piece of the local community as it is also the local post office and provides employment for people with disabilities who make excellent pies. Lara takes it upon herself to raise funds for the town to purchase the store when the threat of city people wanting to turn it into an up-market cafe and destroy the tone of the building with swanky renovations.
This again was an excellent example of people coming together to preserve their livelihoods, and Maya is the Queen of portraying small town life, without any bells and whistles - just the nuts and bolts of the real world.
Yes, there was a budding romance, but it was not without its challenges and it was nice to see Angie and Penny and Angus return for cameo roles in the novel. This book can be definitely read as a stand alone book, but I'm so glad I have read the other two as I now feel invested in this family.
My only complaint is that I now have to wait a year before I get to read the next book from Maya. 5* from me.
Lara McIntyre is a bush nurse and a single mother in the small town of Bridge field. She goes to the local general store, but finds no-one there. She calls out and with no response decides to go out the back to investigate. She finds Mrs Beggs, the owner of the store, lying on the floor after being hit by a stack of boxes. Upon investigation she discovers that Mrs Beggs is not breathing and starts doing CPR.
In the meantime, Toby Paxton, the newly arrived editor and reporter of the local newspaper arrives at the store and calls for an ambulance and tries to help Lara. Whilst Lara is working on the patient, Toby takes photos of her doing so. Once Mrs Beggs is taken to hospital Toby shows Lara the photos and she requests that he not publish the photos and that he can delete them. Although he doesn't want to delete the photos he does to keep on side with the locals.
As Mrs Beggs stays in hospital Lara calls on people to help man the store as they can't survive in a small town without it operating as it also doubles as the post office. As people offer there services a roster is put in place. So once again Lara and Toby are thrown together. Mrs Beggs decides she needs to sell the shop so it is put on the market. As potential buyers are shown through the shop Lara realises that this could be the end of the store so she and Toby set about fundraising to keep it in local hands. This is the beginning of a bumpy ride for all the locals as they navigate their way through many problems, misunderstandings and events in the small town.
An excellent read with interesting characters in a small town setting enduring many twists and turns.
This is my second novel by this author so I now know that warm joy that comes from reading her gorgeous rural romances is part of the experience. Reading this book is like getting a warm hug, it’s true escapism in every sense.
It follows the story of Lara McIntyre, born and bred in the small rural Victorian town of Bridgefield. When an accident puts the general store-slash-post office owner out of action, Lara launches a community effort to save the business from the hands of out-of-towners determined to change everything the locals love about it. But at the heart of the story is the building relationship between a fragile Lara, who has an abusive relationship in her past, and the new local newspaper editor, Toby Paxton.
I won’t lie, the ending was predicable, but if it hadn’t ended the way it did, I think I would have thrown the book across the room! While a rural romance has only one real way to end, the way it gets there is all part of the charm.
I loved this book, its authentic Aussie setting and beautifully relatable characters. I also loved that this book tells the story of another McIntyre sister - Wildflower Ridge telling the story of Penny and Bottlebrush Creek that of Angie. And I believe Linnell’s next book will bring us the story of fourth sister, Diana *rubs hands greedily*
I think I’m now officially a rural romance convert.
It's a very warm welcome back to the McIntyre family and Bridgefield in 𝙼𝚊𝚐𝚙𝚒𝚎'𝚜 𝙱𝚎𝚗𝚍!
This time around, it's second eldest sister Lara's story. I always felt that Lara was a real ice queen in previous books, but she has really redeemed herself! Behind that hard exterior, we have a woman that is lonely and is afraid of falling in love again.
Newcomer journalist Toby Paxton meets Lara in the most unfortunate way when the owner of the general store injures herself. At first, Lara finds Toby irritable but that soon disappears as the pair work together to save the store. As they grow closer, Lara finds herself to be very attracted to Toby.. thanks to alot of meddling from her sisters! However, due to past bad experiences, Lara finds it very hard to trust a man again. There's no need to be concerned Lara! Toby is one of the good guys. Look out for the serenade featuring the Friends theme!!
I missed the McIntyre clan and the sense of community spirit in 𝙱𝚘𝚝𝚝𝚕𝚎𝚋𝚛𝚞𝚜𝚑 𝙲𝚛𝚎𝚎𝚔. Theres nothing like escaping real life and catching up with old friends. 𝙼𝚊𝚐𝚙𝚒𝚎'𝚜 𝙱𝚎𝚗𝚍 is just one of those books that will make you feel exactly that. This is definitely my favourite book in the series! Bravo Maya and I can't wait to read what you have next in store!
