About the author

Korney Ivanovich Chukovsky (Russian: Корней Иванович Чуковский) was one of the most popular children's poets in the Russian language. His catchy rhythms, inventive rhymes and absurd characters have invited comparisons with the American children's author Dr. Seuss. Chukovsky's poems Tarakanishche ("The Monster Cockroach"), Krokodil ("The Crocodile"), Telefon ("The Telephone") and Moydodyr ("Wash-'em-Clean") have been favorites with many generations of Russophone children. Lines from his poems, in particular Telefon, have become universal catch-phrases in the Russian media and everyday conversation. He adapted the Doctor Dolittle stories into a book-length Russian poem as Doktor Aybolit ("Dr. Ow-It-Hurts"), and translated a substantial portion of the Mother Goose canon into Russian as Angliyskiye Narodnyye Pesenki ("English Folk Rhymes"). Cartea copilăriei mele. Acum câteva luni am recitit o, împreună cu copilul meu. Este amuzant cum după atâta timp încă țineam minte numele personajelor si acțiunea cărții. Au trecut mai bine de 30 de ani de cand am citit o și tot îmi staruiau undeva in subconstient.

Simpatica povestea vestitului doctor Aumadoare, cartea este plina de actiune, peripetii. Citind-o copiilor a trebuit sa revin de cateva ori sa le reamintesc amanunte anterior citite pentru ca a fost foarte multa actiune in diferite locatii. Simpatice animalutele, dar tot asa mai greu sa le explici copiilor cum poate convietui in pace crocodilul cu rata, porcul...
Si eu spun ca sora doctoruluo avea dreptate, munca trebuie la un moment dat platita, doctorul traieste cu aer?!? Sau putea sa nu ridice aceasta problema, fiind o carte de copii.

Minunata povestea! Am redescoperit-o citind-o copiilor mei, prilej cu care mi-am dat seama ca inca stiu pasaje intregi din ea (dupa trei decenii), m-a facut sa rad si sa plang, am adormit cu ilustratiile in cap nopti la rand. Savuroasa! O recomand din suflet!

This is one of the first books I read by myself. It was actually a translated work in telugu, My mother tongue. I couldn't find it here but the cover image was the same. This book was instrumental in nurturing two of my major components of my life- reading and animals. It taught me compassion and spirit of adventure. This book probably is also responsible for my wanderlust. I probably read hundreds of books and stories so far but this book always remains the closest to my heart.
My Dad used to buy a lot of books, translated into telugu and english, by authors of erstwhile soviet union. I was brought up on these literature. I always feel, in way, privileged for that. Reproduction of these books has stopped. At least in India.

E o carte pe care o recomand pentru că oamenii trebuie să învețe să semene cât mai mult cu doctorul Aumădoare, însă, dacă este citită de copii, cred că ar trebui să fie discutată cu părinții pentru a lămuri câteva aspecte. Doctorul este un personaj adorabil, memorabil și demn de respect, însă nu am reușit să simt atâta emoție câtă așteptam de la o carte despre bunătate și animăluțe. Doctor Concocter, adapted by Richard N. Coe, illustrated by William Papas.

A loose translation of the Russian children's poem Доктор Айболит - also available in English as Doctor Ouch - this picture-book follows the adventures of the eponymous Doctor Concocter, who is summoned urgently to Africa, to help the animals there. "Doctor Concocter sits under a tree; / He's ever so clever. (He has a Degree!) / All the Hares, and the Bears, and the Snakes, and the Weasels / Are sure of a cure for their headaches and their measles. / Hippo, or Rhino, or Otter, or Setter... / Doctor Concocter will make them all better." And so begins the tale, which sees the good doctor helped on his journey by a wolf, a whale and an eagle, before finding himself on the banks of the Limpopo River, where he works tirelessly doling out his cures...

It's interesting to note that Доктор Айболит was Kornei Chukovsky's Russian adaptation of the Doctor Dolittle stories, just as Doctor Concocter is Richard Coe's English adaptation of Доктор Айболит. Not having read the Doctor Dolittle books, I can't offer any comparison of this English adaptation of a Russian adaptation with the original English work it is based upon, although it would make an interesting project for those concerned with issues of translation and revision in international children's literature. That said, the actual poem presented here was somewhat uneven: some passages worked, and some felt rather clunky. I understand that Chukovsky is something of a Russian Dr. Seuss, known for his rollicking rhymes, so I put that down to the difficulties of translation, particularly as I enjoyed Wash 'Em Clean , the only other of the author's poems that I have read. I may have to track down some other English translations, and see if they are more consistent.

Este o carte foarte potrivita chiar si pentru copiii mai micuti care au rabdare sa le citesti cu voce tare. Dar fiindca are unele pasaje cu violenta parca nu as recomanda-o pentru copii sub 7-8 ani (Tragempinge o arunca pe sora doctorului de pe stanca si apoi aceasta e dusa si abandonata pe o insula pustie, e doar un exemplu). E foarte frumos ilustrata. Noi am citit-o in doua zile, copilul de 4 ani jumate a fost foarte incantat, iar ilustratiile sunt superbe. Problema pe care o vad e faptul ca este foarte lunga si ca noi avem obiceiul sa tot recitim cartile care le plac copiilor.

My Dad used to buy a lot of books. By the time I learnt to read, he was no more but I have got access to all his books collection. I used to pick the books with lots of illustrations & colors. Dr. Aibolit was one of them. It was a hot summer of 2002. I really enjoyed reading this book. Still Dr. Aibolit is One of the best books I have ever read. I only remember the story bits & pieces now. However I can say it was a fantastic book. Unfortunately all the books collection was scrapped by my grand parents when I was away. I have been trying to find a copy of this book again but no luck yet.

O frumoasă carte de povești pe care am primit-o de Crăciun și pentru care mi-am făcut timp pentru a delecta partea sufletului ce refuză să se maturizeze vreodată.

Textul și grafica sunt superbe, amintind ici colo de inflexiuni ale limbii de acum treizeci de ani, cu imagini ce par a fi decupate din cărțile pentru copii din acea vreme. Un tur de nostalgie care și-a meritat timpul.

It is a very first book that I remember my mother reading to me, that I've learned by heart. It's a kind and sweet story for little children and very easy to remember, don't know about the English translation, but for Russia and Ukraine it sounds good.

في هذا الكتاب جزء من مغامرات دكتور آيّبوْليت (دكتور آي يعور)، صديق الحيوانات ومنقذهم والمحبوب بين الناس، لأنها للأطفال فكل موقف يعبر عن درس أخلاقي وعبر وطبعا في النهاية ينتصر الخير على الشر.

كانت القراءة جدًا سهلة وسلسلة والكلمات الجديدة تفهم بسهولة من السياق، فأعطاني هذا الإحساس اللطيف بالإنجاز دافعًا لقراءة باقي أعمال كورني چوكوڤسكي ربما لاحقا ان شاء الله. (😀)

تمنيت لو أنه كان للسناجب دور فعال في القصة ولا يكتفي بذكر أنهم يعيشون في الخزانة :(

Chápem, že kniha je klasikou, v zásade obsahuje všetky podstatné rozprávkové aspekty - boj dobra so zlom (a víťazstvo dobra), opakujúca sa symbolika čísla tri, vzrušenie z dobrodružstva aj bezpečie návratu domov. Príbeh ako taký je však na môj vkus akosi príliš zjednodušený – možno patrične pre vekovú skupinu detí predškolského veku, neviem, osobne mi tam však chýbalo niečo viac ako len išiel, prišiel, zvíťazil. Najviac ma na príbehu bavili asi naozaj veselé ilustrácie Ľuboslava Paľa.

Ai-bô-lít có nghĩa là Ôi, đau quá!

Phim Bác sĩ Dolittle đang quảng cáo ngoài rạp khá rầm rộ mà mình không ham hố lắm nên mò đọc lại một cuốn truyện cũng về một vị bác sĩ có khả năng nói chuyện với động vật như thế – bác sĩ Ai-bô-lít. Hình như mình đã già nên cảm thấy truyện này chỉ thích hợp dành cho trẻ con thôi, còn người lớn thì đọc kiểu cho vui, giải trí, giết thời gian nhưng bây giờ mình cũng thắc mắc: liệu tụi nhóc có thích truyện này không? Ngày xưa thì mê tít, chứ bây giờ thì thấy có vẻ như câu truyện không được giàu tính nhân văn cho lắm. Bác sĩ Ai-bô-lít rất giàu lòng nhân ái, yêu thương muôn loài, bác sĩ chữa bệnh cho động vật mà không hề lấy tiền và trong đó có những con vật thân thiết nhất đã theo bác sĩ đi “phiêu lưu” khắp nơi như con Kéo Đẩy 2 đầu, chó Gâu Gâu, vẹt Ca-ru-cô, lợn Ủn ỉn, cú Bum-ba, vịt Ki-ca, khỉ Chi-chí, … Nhưng bác sĩ yêu thương động vật, luôn lo sợ muôn loài bị đau lại không hề có tình yêu thương với chính người em gái ruột của mình – mụ Vác-va-ra – một người căm ghét các loài động vật sống bên cạnh bác sĩ (nhưng theo mình thấy là mụ ta chỉ ganh tỵ với tài năng của bác sĩ mà thôi). Cái kết của mụ là bị bác sĩ nhờ người bạn thủy thủy già Rô-bin-xơn đày ra đảo hoang. Một vài kết cục khác với mấy tên cướp biển cũng thế: Bác-ma-lây thì bác để mặc cho hắn bị cá mập ăn thịt dù hắn đã hết lòng cầu xin vào phút cuối, tên Bê-na-lít thì bị tan tành đời trai do chèo thuyền đâm vào đá ngầm trong đêm tối cũng chỉ do bác sĩ và muôn loài muốn cứu con Đích, con trai của con Kéo Đẩy,… Tất cả chỉ nhằm mục đích bảo vệ các loài động vật xung quanh bác. Đọc sách mà mình cứ mong mãi, hi vọng tác giả để cho bác sĩ cảm hóa những tên hung ác đó trở thành người lương thiện, biết yêu thương động vật. Thế thì có phải câu truyện sẽ vui vẻ tốt đẹp hơn không? Liệu bọn trẻ con sẽ nghĩ rằng: đã là kẻ xấu thì nhất định sẽ bị trừng trị và cái giá phải trả chính là cái chết không nhỉ??? Như thế thì thật là an tuê yo!!

Hẳn bác sĩ Aibolit là quyển sách thiếu nhi gắn liền với tuổi thơ của thế hệ 8x, 9x. Quyển sách giúp ta biết yêu thương muôn loài, đấu tranh cho cái thiện và diệt trừ cái ác.

Tuy rằng đọc lại lần này nhận thấy được một vài điểm trừ từ quyển sách: ví như sự vô cảm của bác sĩ khi cô em Vác-va-ra bị ném xuống biển và đưa đến đảo hoang, hay để cho bọn cướp ác độc chết tươi trong hàm cá mập.

Quyển sách nhìn chung đơn thuần về tôn vinh cái thiện, xóa bỏ cái ác, dạy trẻ con biết yêu thương động vật và có lòng biết ơn.

Ôi, đọc lại quyển này như đọc lại tuổi thơ mình 😚

పిల్లలను జంతువులలోకంలోకి తీసుకువెళ్ళే ఓ రంగుల బొమ్మల కథల పుస్తకం. ఈ రష్యన్ పుస్తకాన్ని తెలుగులో అనువదించింది ఆర్వీఅర్ గారు. ఈ పుస్తకం చాలా కాలంగా ముద్రించబడలేదు. దీన్ని ఇటీవల మంచి పుస్తకం మరల ప్రచురించింది. ఈ పుస్తకావిష్కరణ సభలో పుస్తకాన్ని గురించి వక్తలు చెప్పిన మాటలకు వెంటనే పుస్త్సకాన్ని కొని చదవటం మొదలు పెట్టాను. మధ్యలో పుస్తకాన్ని చదవటం ఆపుదామన్న ధ్యాస కూడ లేకుండా పూర్తిగా చదివేంత వరకు ఉండబట్టలేకపోయాను. జంతువులు డాక్టర్ తో మాడ్లాటం అతని జీవన విధానం అందరిని (పిల్లలతో పాటు పెద్దలను కూడా) అలరిస్తుందని నా అభిప్రాయం.

I read this book as a kid. Now, as an adult, this book still amuses me! By the looks of it, Doctor Ouch seems similar to Dr Dolittle. But the narrative, the character development of each animal (Yeah! You read that right) is done just right.
