Lindsey Waters never wanted to return to the seaside inn where she grew up. Too many traumatic memories haunt the place, both from her childhood and from days gone by. But with guilt relentlessly chasing her after a tragic choice, she’s desperate for a fresh start.
Mysterious incidents begin plaguing the inn—dangerous incidents—that make it clear someone wants to scare Lindsey away. But why? Does it have anything to do with the two weeks missing from her memory when she was abducted at age twelve?
Childhood friend Benjamin Newsom seems like an answer to prayer when he shows up to work as a handyman. But something is different about him, something Lindsey can’t put her finger on. She’s certain Benjamin harbors secrets.
As peril continues to close in, Lindsey must decide if she wants to face her past or run. She doesn’t know whom she can trust, and whatever choices she makes will determine if she lives or if she becomes part of the inn’s tragic legacy.
Christy Barritt is an author, freelance writer and speaker who lives in Virginia. She’s married to her Prince Charming, a man who thinks she’s hilarious—but only when she’s not trying to be. Christy’s a self-proclaimed klutz, an avid music lover who’s known for spontaneously bursting into song, and a road trip aficionado. She’s only won one contest in her life—and her prize was kissing a pig (okay, okay… actually she did win the Daphne du Maurier Award for Excellence in Suspense and Mystery also). Her current claim to fame is showing off her mother, who looks just like former First Lady Barbara Bush When she’s not working or spending time with her family, she enjoys singing, playing the guitar, and exploring small, unsuspecting towns where people have no idea how accident prone she is.
With an intensely spooking opening scene in the prologue, set fifteen years prior to the rest of the book, The Inn on Hanging Hill immediately captured my attention. The author peppered this story with many twists and turns and took me by surprise multiple times. There were plenty of suspicious characters who seemed to know something about the past events, yet they were very good at evading the questions that Lindsey asked. The author did a great job of making it very difficult to determine who was trustworthy. The mystery surrounding Lindsey’s abduction and her missing memories added a lot of confusion for her, too.
I really enjoyed the way Lindsey and Benjamin connected and began to grow close as they worked on the house together. They were both characters that I liked and hoped the best for even as there were some questions relating to why Benjamin was back in town.
I highly recommend this book to readers who enjoy suspenseful tales that will keep you guessing through much of book.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Such an interesting mystery that is reminiscent of the game Clue. It’s a bit eerie so I don’t recommend reading this late at night, especially if you’re alone. The plot moves quickly and centers mostly on Benjamin and Lindsey but seamlessly brings in secondary characters to broaden the scope of who can be responsible for the threats and other nefarious dealings around the inn that is being renovated. The secrets that all the characters are harboring run deep and the ending is quite a surprise. If you enjoy a good mystery with a dose of romance, you will enjoy this book. I received a copy via JustRead Tours and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are solely my own.
The book is a lot more telling than showing, but the story moves along fairly fast. It felt like the reader was being led on a bit with repeated references to “What happened” but then reminders that the characters “did want to talk about that NOW.” I got the point that the author was trying to hold on to the suspense about the fifth time I was told that in the narrative instead of being shown. I felt the romance was a little forced and awkward. Despite the “complaints” I have about the book, none of these little issues took away from the fact that the writer has a knack for writing good stories. Just because some of these issues bothered me should not deter you from reading this book. We all have different likes and what bothered me will not bother others while things others might not like will be something I did like. I know this author is prolific and has plenty of books out there for readers to try so if you find one that isn’t to your liking, try another one. I have a feeling you’ll find one of hers that scratches your reading itch. Bottom line? I recommend this book if you like suspense and a little bit of an eerie story with a touch of romance thrown in. Also, I plan to try other of her books to see if those hit me a little better than this one did. I’m sure they will. I was given a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
"What was going on in this town? Why did it seem like everyone had a secret . . . "
Maybe, just maybe . . . because they did?
It began fifteen years earlier for Lindsey Waters. On one fateful night, an innocent act of disobedience turned into a nightmare for Lindsey and her friend Benjamin Newsom. Apparently the small community surrounding her family's ocean-side inn had never forgotten the traumatic event, while Lindsey had never been able to fully remember. And now she was back. Clearly someone didn't appreciate her return to the dilapidated Hidden Shores Inn, for the note had read, "Get out while you can". Thank goodness for Benjamin, he was back as well.
Working together on the inn's renovation brought back memories for both of them; but until, and unless, the old place gave up its secrets, a total restoration might remain just out of reach, for . . . . . "it seemed like they had stepped into the middle of a real life thriller movie" . . . the question became . . . . could they step out?
What an interesting story . . . lots of questions, very few answers, and more than one suspect. One of my very favorite books by this author and there have been many!
This was my first book by this author, which I was surprised about! I'll definitely have to go back and read book one in the series!
The story starts out pretty dark and mysterious! I was surprised at how we were introduced to the main characters in the story. Lindsay is back at the inn where she had a traumatic experience and unlike her, being back doesn't sound any fun. Not only is she back, but surprisingly, Benjamin ends up back there, too!
As soon as they show up, all crazy breaks out! One thing after another goes on at the inn and clearly someone is trying to send them a message to "get out"! Of course, the way the author writes, it could be any number of people. I could not, for the life of me figure it out.
I'd say about halfway through the story there's a plot twist that I wasn't expecting and it threw me for a loop. Then the ending was not at all what I was expecting either. I was definitely guessing until almost the very end!
*I received this book for review. This is my personal opinion.
Wowza! What a creepy and chilling read, PERFECT for an October read. This story was near impossible to put down! There were so many pieces to this story and I HAD to know how they fit. I really enjoyed this story. The end was a little creepy for my taste but the story was so so good. I need more of this series!!
I'm constantly amazed at how Barritt can create unique stories that are exciting to read. This story is no expectation.
It opens with a flashback 15 years earlier when Lindsay and Benjamin are sneaking out to view a once in a life time event. But during their adventure they see a body hanging from a tree and Lindsay is kidnapped.
In the present day, Lindsay returns to the inn where she had been kidnapped only to be returned 2 weeks later unharmed, but with no memory of those 2 weeks. But it still haunts her and she needs closure. She didn't expect to find that closure with Benjamin who shows up as a handyman to help her fix up the inn.
But the problems start almost immediately and the "fun" begins.
This is just an enjoyable story with lots of action, mystery and secrets. So many secrets!
I didn't realize until late in the book who our bad "guy" was, but even as I started to think maybe, all the whys were very interesting.
Even though this is book two of the Beach House Mystery Series, it is completely independent of book 1 so you can read it as a stand alone. I do recommend reading book 1 because it was really good as well!
Disclaimer: I did receive this book from the author, but was under no obligation to provide a review. All opinions expressed here are my own.
I loved this book because it contains all the elements of a good mystery: a strong hook, continuing tension as the story progresses, characters with secrets and faults, a mysterious old inn, and a thread of romance. The secrecy that cloaks the past casts a pall on the characters, but a mist of hope hovers around the edges of the story. There are some twists near the end that add a bonus to this entertaining read.
The Inn on Hanging Hill by Christy Barret Ever picked up a book and it would not leave your head? That is this book. Within the first chapter I was hooked. Literally. Here is the first line:
““We Shouldn’t Be Doing This,” Lindsey Waters whispered as she stood in the dark hallway next to her sometimes friend, sometimes enemy, and all-the-time troublemaker.”
I loved the little hints woven into the story as to who dun it. The characters backgrounds were told like you were getting to know a real person over time. Just small bits of knowledge dropped here and there that helped you form a clear picture of who the characters were and what circumstances helped them become the people they are today. LOVED it.
The mystery really kept me guessing. It was not something you could figure out in the first few chapters, and I really enjoyed the conclusion explanation that explained everything! Full of secrets and unexplained happenings, very well done.
Overall, this story was interesting, intriguing, and had great characters. 5 Stars.
*I volunteered to read this book in return for my honest feedback. The thoughts and opinions expressed within are my own.
Christy Barritt always delivers fast-paced romantic suspense reads, and The Inn on Hanging Hill adds an element of eerie.
From the prologue—which takes place fifteen years prior to the rest of the book—to the last page, readers will be wondering what in the world is happening in this old inn. Lindsey is a character you just know wants to do good but somehow, she has been surrounded by people who want the opposite. And therefore, I wanted here to find her footing and a fresh start.
Benjamin seems like a good guy, but you just know there’s something off about him. I kept wavering on what that was right up until the truth is revealed.
With an inn as full of secrets as the townspeople, this book kept me guessing as to who was behind the happenings. This is a quick read just because you won’t want to put it down.
Disclosure statement: I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book and was not required to write a positive review. All opinions are my own.
The Inn on Hanging Hill by Christy Barritt features a haunted inn set above a eighty foot cliff to the ocean. What is better than a spooky inn with a past? The story thrills and chills as the heroine and hero try to find answers to what happened a long time ago. The past mystery really captured my attention. I liked the spooky ability as the story moved along. The heroine had a past that she needed to move forward on, so Barritt allowed her to do this as the story progressed. There was a little romance. Not a lot. The story was definitely more focused on the mystery element, which is the way I like my mysteries. This is definitely a nice cozy mysteries that I enjoyed reading. I can't wait to see what else she crafts along the lines of this series.
I received a complimentary copy of The Inn on Hanging Hill by Christy Barritt, but the opinions stated are all my own.
She disappeared for two weeks fifteen years ago . . .
THE INN ON HANGING HILL is creepy in a decidedly gothic way. A rundown inn with a storied past. A heroine trying to face her past (and remember a missing part of it). A friend from the past returns. An entire town with secrets. What's not to like? Better than the first book in the series.
Loved this even better than the first in the series! Christy Barritt writes such good suspense that isn't too scary! I really enjoyed the unpacking of the mysteries behind Hidden Shores Inn and the fateful night 15 years ago that changed things forever. Such a good story that definitely includes twists and turns that you didn't see coming.
I haven't read the first book, The Cottage On Ghost Lane, but after reading The Inn On Hanging Hill, I definitely want to. This book was spooky but not scary. Full of tension and suspense but nothing horrific. There is deception and forgiveness and, when the truth is revealed, I could feel the relief of the characters, especially Lindsey (the main character).
This is a romance and there is one kiss. I appreciated how Ms. Barritt wrote how two people can be attracted to each other all while honoring God. I feel like a lot of Christian romance sidesteps attraction but it is part of who we are and to ignore it is to ignore part of God's creation. Even better, though, is how it's handled. Yes, they're attracted to each other, but the attraction is built on respect (even if there is some deception going on) and a genuine interest in the other person.
Taken together, the romance and the suspense create a great story that kept me guessing. Even when I thought I had it figured out, I didn't. I enjoy books like this and highly recommend this one. This is a good book for older teens through adults who enjoy romance, hanging-on-the-edge of your seat suspense, and plot twists galore.
I was pleasantly surprised by this romantic suspense. Barritt is a prolific author but I think this is the first novel I have read by her. I am putting her name on my list of authors to watch for on new releases.
The current events at the inn have roots in years past. All of the secrets come out in the end but that part of the plot is complex. I would have liked more of a build up in the plot so that when the end revelation did happen, I would have had more of the attitude that I should have known rather than wondering how I could have ever known. Also, some of the last actions of the villain seemed unrealistic with so many people to control.
Even though the plot development might not have been as tightly woven as I would have liked, I did like the character development in general. The potential romance was well done with suitable obstacles to overcome. The villain seemed a bit unrealistic but the others in the novel were crafted fine. I was happy enough with the novel that I will be reading some of the others she has written.
I received a complimentary digital copy of this book through Celebrate Lit. My comments are an independent and honest review.
This book is a perfect Romantic Suspence novel with a good dose of spiritual insights. The main characters are compelling and the others are interesting personalities. I enjoyed reading it so much I could hardly put it down. I highly recommend this book to those who love this genre as much as I do!
Lindsay is back "home". Back to where she can't remember what happened fifteen years ago, but it's soon clear, other people remember. While trying to fix up the Inn, she's in danger. Lindsay is getting threats, but why? Then there's Benjamin, working endlessly to help her restore this place, but something is still off. What does he know? It sure looks like everyone in this tiny town has one or more secrets.
I LOVED this dark and mysterious, action filled, clean read with plenty of suspense and mystery. It is lighter on faith, but it's there, and it's a good book to help getting people into Christian fiction without overwhelming them. It was just the right read for me right now. I liked the author's writing style as well.
Thank you to Celebrate Lit for my digital copy of this book. This review is my own and it contains what I thought about this book. A positive review is never required.
Christy Barritt is an author I've loved since I read her "Squeaky Clean" mysteries some time ago! Her writing is charming, often funny, and full of unexpected reveals. In her newest, The Inn on Hanging Hill, we meet Lindsey, who grew up at the inn run by her parents. Perched on the cliff which rose eighty feet above the beach and surf below, the inn hosted dinner clubs, parties, and offered lodging for guests. Lindsey, being a child, never attended the parties and was confined to her room during them. However, she did have a dear friend, Benjamin, with whom she'd sneak out occasionally.
One evening during Lindsey's twelfth year, she was out after dark with Benjamin when something horrible occurred. She was grabbed off their property and held somewhere, for some time. But she can't remember much of anything about that. All she did know was when they moved away, she was happy to leave and not come back.
Until many years later, when her career stalled, and she decided to redo and sell the deserted inn that she'd inherited from her parents. And of all people, Benjamin returns to help her as the handyman she advertises for. Lindsey isn't very comfortable at the inn, but it helps to have someone there that she trusts.
Can she really trust Benjamin, though? He has some secrets that he's keeping from Lindsey. And, odd things begin happening. Footsteps in the floors above. Scary noises in the woods. And other frightening incidents. Is someone trying to get Lindsey to leave the inn...or do they have even more nefarious plans for her? She believes she should stay and finish the work. Can she live with that decision...or will it spell her doom?
Lindsey's and Benjamin's childhood pasts make them both interested in redeeming the sorrows and missing memories of their younger years. Barritt's storytelling skill shines in the settings she creates, the mysteries woven around the inn, and the attraction the two have for each other. It's a great clean suspense book with quite the surprises for the reader. I do recommend this!
I received a copy of this book from the author. All opinions are my own.
I really enjoy books by Christy Barritt. The Inn Hanging Hill is Book 2 in the Beach House Mystery series. I have not read Book 1, but this read great as a Standalone.
There is soo much to LOVE about this book. I was immediately drawn into the book from the very first chapter. Lindsey Waters is one of the main characters of the book and she has returned home to the Inn that she grew up in. She didn't necessarily want to be there as it brings up some rough times from her Childhood. She is surprised when a Childhood friend, Benjamin Newsom, shows up to work as a Handyman. The 2 were great friends in childhood, but now Lindsey is uneasy about Benjamin. She feels something is amiss about Benjamin. Mysterious things begin happening at the Inn and Lindsey is going stir crazy.
WOW, the twists and turns in this book really had me grabbing a hold of the story and trying to figure it out. The story was not Predictable and I enjoy that factor. Watching Lindsey and Benjamin grow closer, even though Lindsey had doubts, was a wonderful part of the story. Lindsey knew she had to make some decisions and her thought process was determential to her future with the Inn. I would read this book again and again. I highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys Romance and Mystery! WONDERFUL BOOK!
When I need a mystery fix, I know I can rely on Christy Barritt to deliver. Her books can be funny or deadly serious, but are always page turners. Her latest in the Beach House Mystery series is definitely one I would recommend. She has the creepy house vibe down with The Inn on Hanging Hill. (Even the title promises a shivery reading experience.) The story takes place on the Eastern Shore of Virginia at a long neglected inn with history. It’s been 15 years since Lindsey has been there — after her abduction and mysterious return, her parents and she left, never to return. Now Lindsey has taken on the task of rehabbing the building and finding answers to just who was responsible for her kidnapping. Joining her is her long lost friend from those years at the inn, Benjamin. But as threats surface, things are not what they seem. I loved the two main characters. Each were very likable. They faced each danger with determination to get to the bottom of all that was happening. There is no shortage of suspects, but Barritt surprised me. Everyone, it seems, has a motive for the unsolved abduction and the present-day threats. The creepy/beach-y setting was fun and the romance between Lindsey and Benjamin was sweet, but it was the puzzle that kept me engaged. I did not see the ending coming!
I gather from the description of book one in the series, The Cottage on Ghost Lane, that The Inn on Hanging Hill is a standalone novel. But I had so much fun reading it, that the previous book is now on my TBR list. 🙂
Recommended.
Audience: Adults.
(I purchased the Kindle version from Amazon. All opinions expressed are mine alone.)
Fixing up her family’s seaside inn is the last thing Lindsey Waters expected to be doing. Together with her childhood best friend Benjamin Newsom, she sets out to repair the property and uncover answers regarding her long ago abduction. When secrets and sabotage hinder their efforts, will they still be able to find out the truth?
My favorite part of this mystery was Benjamin. Christy Barritt did a great job of trickling in details about what he was hiding. While I did have some suspicions, I couldn’t quite put it together.
However, Benjamin wanting to confess the truth to Lindsay and either putting it off or getting interrupted did get slightly annoying. I just knew the truth would come out eventually and cause drama that could have been avoided.
I suspected who the culprit was toward the end, but wasn’t certain about the motive. (Although once the motive was revealed, it did feel a bit overly complicated.)
Favorite Moments 🔑 thunderstorm 🔑 redo and introductions 🔑 ending
Content Notes: mention of ghost stories, mention of hanging, mention of an inn being “haunted,” blood, some mild violence, mention of a battlefield, death of parents (mentioned), mention of the possibility of sexual assault, mention of an affair, noticing and awareness, touching, murder, mention of a woman’s curves, mention of considering suicide, death from a hit-and-run, mention of sexual harassment lawsuits, guns, mention of being on drugs
For those who are fans of mystery and intrigue I encourage you to grab a copy of this book. I love that it is filled with just enough suspense to keep readers guessing. I certainly didn’t figure out who was behind everything. In fact I was shocked at the ending. The author has cleverly written a story that spans over fifteen years where secrets, revenge and power can be deadly.
Lindsey coming back to the inn was suppose to be a time of healing and restoration. Instead it turns into a nightmare as accidents happen around her, and strange notes appear out of nowhere. If you have experienced a traumatic event you can understand what Lindsey is going through. Her abduction has never been solved and she has just little flashbacks at times of those two weeks she was held captive. Will she ever get the answers she is seeking to overcome her past?
I did figure out the secret Benjamin was keeping with subtle hints from the author. It didn’t take anything away from the story for me at all. I kept wondering how long he could continue to deceive Lindsey and knew when she found out her trust would be gone. There is a definite theme of a small town filled with secrets and people who are manipulated by an evil person. The author delivers an intense look at the cost of hiding the truth and the price of keeping secrets.
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
The Inn on Hanging Hill The Beach House Mystery series #2 by Christy Barritt
Lindsey Waters is returning home - it's the one place in the world she never wanted to revisit. But life has taken the choice out of her hands. She needs to get the inn somewhat reasonable repair so that she can sell it. The trauma of a lost childhood incident has made an impression on her and someone seems determined to revisit the terror and fear upon her. Her only hope to stay ahead of the person terrorizing her is Ben Harris, the person who was there all those years ago. But could the secrets he seems to be hiding bring the danger closer?
But from the opening, we are left with questions and little clues as to where the answers could be found. I loved the suspicions the author wove throughout the present-day portion of the story. I love when there are unexpected plot twists that seemingly set a story on a different path.
This is the second book in The Beach House Mystery series of which I have only enjoyed this book. The story was easy to follow without the previous book having been read. I could totally see this book being made into a Hallmark Mystery movie. It has this same feel but is a clean read so no graphic descriptive surprises.
I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion ~ All thoughts expressed are my own.
A dilapidated old inn. A painful past. A reunion of friends.
Childhood friends Lindsey and Benjamin haven’t seen each other since the night she was abducted and he was sent away to live with relatives. She doesn’t remember that two-week period of her life. He’s hiding secrets.
As they work to renovate the inn where Lindsey grew up, can they discover what really happened that night and somehow unlock her memory?
Between threats, unfriendly locals, a suspicious sheriff, and fallout from her disastrous former job, will they have the chance?
Set in a small Virginia town on the Chesapeake Bay, the novel is a quick read where nothing is as it seems. It’s a clean read with a thread of faith. The atmospheric old inn adds a suitably spooky touch.
The Inn on Hanging Hill is book 2 in the Beach House Mystery series but it reads well as a stand-alone. I haven’t read book 1, The Cottage on Ghost Lane, and I had no trouble finding my place in this one. They appear to have entirely different characters.
Christy Barritt has written over 70 books in a number of fast-paced romantic suspense series. Some are funny, some quirky, and some serious. For more about the author and her work, visit christybarritt.com.
The Inn on Hanging Hill is one of the novels that illustrates the diversity of styles author Christy Barritt is capable of writing. It is one that falls into the seriously spooky category and lacks the trademark humor that is present in so many of her novels. I personally love them all.
This book takes place at the seaside inn run by her parents and where Lindsey Waters grew up. Not very excited about it but Lindsey has returned to restore the Inn that has too many unpleasant memories attached to it. Coincidentally, her childhood best friend Ben shows up looking for work and she hires him to help with the needed work. Only something is not quite right about Ben and when a number of suspicious and dangerous incidents occur, Lindsey has to wonder if he might be responsible.
A bit of mystery, lots of secrets, increasing danger, unexpected twists, and a touch of romance make The Inn on Hanging Hill a page turner that will capture the attention of most readers.
I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book provided by JustReads Publicity. A favorable review was not required. All views expressed are my own.
The Inn on Hanging Hill by Christy Barritt is a good spooky season title for readers who enjoy edge-of-your-seat novels without horror elements.
The plot is suspenseful, beginning with a fateful night 15 years ago involving main characters Lindsay and Benjamin. The novel then moves to present day when Lindsay returns to restore her family’s abandoned inn. Bad things soon begin to happen and the message is clear - someone wants Lindsay to leave … immediately.
As the story unfolds, readers meet an interesting group of secondary characters. Could one of them be the instigator of the mysterious events?
Short chapters that end with mini cliffhangers quickly propelled me through the story. This has plenty of unsettling events, but nothing scary enough to cause nightmares.
As with most suspense novels, I had to suspend belief about a few coincidences in the plot. The crime was interesting and unusual, certainly not something I anticipated.
Thank you to the author and JustRead Tours for the complimentary copy of the book. All thoughts are my own.
The Inn on Hanging Hill is a book filled with lots of mystery, lots of danger, lots of questions, lots of twists and turns -- it definitely keeps you guessing until the end!
The main characters have a complicated past, and the mystery in their stories is definitely interesting. They were, though, a little hard to really connect with, and there were elements in the plot that didn't quite seem to fit together really well. But all in all it was a very engaging story. I found myself sticking with it way past bedtime to see how things were resolved.
I think fans of mystery -- with a little creepiness mixed in -- would enjoy this story.
Thanks to JustRead Publicity Tours for providing a copy of the book. I am happy to share my thoughts in this review.
Lindsey and Benjamin knew each other 15 years ago. A lot. Has changed since the night she was abducted. She has returned to restore the inn that belonged to her parents. Unknowingly she hires Benjamin to help her with the work. From there the mystery slowly unfolds in depth and danger.
I liked this story. It had some fun twists and turns with a well paced mystery. At the heart of the story is a message of faith, forgiveness, and facing the past. Lindsey works to remember the details of her past while rebuilding her legacy. Interspersed are townspeople with secrets to hide of their own.
This was a story of simple faith and healing. Throw in a little suspense and DIY and you have a good afternoon.
I received an eARC from the publisher and this is my honest review.
