Richard S. Prather
93 books43 followersRichard Scott Prather was an American mystery novelist, best known for creating the "Shell Scott" series. He also wrote under the pseudonyms David Knight and Douglas Ring.
Prather was born in Santa Ana, California. He served in the United States Merchant Marine during World War II. In 1945 year he married Tina Hager and began working as a civilian chief clerk of surplus property at March Air Force Base in Riverside, California. He left that job to become a full-time writer in 1949. The first Shell Scott mystery, 'Case of the Vanishing Beauty' was published in 1950. It would be the start of a long series that numbered more than three dozen titles featuring the Shell Scott character.
Prather had a disagreement with his publisher in the 1970s and sued them in 1975. He gave up writing for several years and grew avocados. However in 1986 he returned with 'The Amber Effect'. Prather's final book, 'Shellshock', was published in hardcover in 1987 by Tor Books.
At the time of his death in 2007, he had completed his final Shell Scott Mystery novel, 'The Death Gods'. It was published October 2011 by Pendleton Artists.
Prather served twice on the Board of Directors of the Mystery Writers of America. Additionally Prather received the Shamus Award, "The Eye" (Lifetime achievment award) in 1986.

Richard Prather – Shell Scott PI Mystery Series Vol 6 – Reviewed 9/11/21 – Read 8/31-9/7/21
When you are in trouble, you’ll depend on Shell Scott to stir things up & take care of the problem.
This is a collection of exciting cases that the happy-go-lucky private investigator Shell Scott becomes involved in. To be sure he will search out all of the beautiful women involved in the mystery and will eventually solve it. The most impressive part though is how much he loves his work, but even more so, when the client is a beautiful woman. The one thing that he can never count on is the number of people who turn up dead, while he is working on his cases. His best friend at the LAPD has chewed up quite a few cigars when he finds out that Shell is entangled in a case that hits his desk regarding a dead body, but assuredly he can count on more before it is put to bed.
This volume includes the following cases… Dead-Bang, Kill Me Tomorrow, The Meandering Corpse, Double in Trouble, Gat Heat, and The Death Gods.
Join Shell as he weaves his way through the gorgeous women, racks up some dead bodies, and solves a few cases!
What did I like? This is the first book of Richard’s that I have read, and I found it very interesting and humorous. I had never realized how thought-provoking and exciting the life of a PI could possibly be until I read these six exciting, sexy, and violent capers. Don’t get me wrong, there were a ton of funny things that occurred and when you added them all together, they kept him hopping.
What will you like? Now, do you truly know the definition of the word EXCITING? According to Merriam-Webster, it is an adjective meaning producing excitement. But when you read on and you see the list of Synonyms: breathtaking, charged, electric, electrifying, exhilarating, exhilarative, galvanic, galvanizing, hair-raising, heart-stopping, inspiring, intoxicating, kicky, mind-bending, mind-blowing, mind-boggling, rip-roaring, rousing, stimulating, stirring and last but not least THRILLING. Well, I guess that about sums up this book? Richard Prather’s new book of “Shell Scott PI Mystery Series Vol 6” is available NOW!!!
