WESTERN HISTORY LIKE YOU’VE NEVER EXPERIENCED BEFORE!
After tragically losing her husband, Molly decides to do what they had planned to do, cross the continent on the Oregon Trail to begin a new life in a new country.
Struggling with personal loss and the perils of overland travel, Molly cares for her two young children and proves her strength and resiliency as she wavers between hope and despair. Then Micah, a free spirit who has been wandering for years, running from his own demons, rides into her life, and nothing will be the same again.
“Author Harlan Hague brings fresh concepts into the migration west, blending the realities of the journey with human needs, vividly showing the grit it took to migrate west.”
In the waning years of the cattle trails, this long drive from south Texas to Montana is a continuation and a transition. Crossing railroad tracks and passing under telegraph lines, encountering Indian bands whose people had been forced onto reservations, the outfit endured and enjoyed what other outfits for decades had experienced on the trail.

All roads head west for new adventures! Molly to Oregon and Charlie to Montana!
This New Day: Molly and her husband, Johnny, with their two children (Rob and Kath) sold their property in Franklin, Missouri intending to join a wagon train heading to Oregon. Their neighbor, Walter, had heard them talking about the trip and had asked to join them. So off they go to Independence, MO. But as usual, things do not go as they plan. In a freak accident, Johnny is killed. Afterward, Molly decided to continue, as she had no place to go, the farm was gone and now so was Johnny, the love of her life, father of her children. She would continue following his dream. Rob, Kath, Walter, and Molly begin the trip just as planned, but Molly could never have known how hard it would be for her or the troubles that would be heaped on her shoulders. And the story begins…
On the Sunset Rim: Charlie McBride agreed to deliver a herd of beef to the Indians in Montana. Now, this meant that he needed cowpokes to work the herd for him. Will Bishop came recommended by his brother, a trail boss driving another herd north, just in front of his. Will’s brother, Scott, didn’t want to put Will in the position of the other cowpokes thinking he was getting favoritism due to his brother being Trail Boss, so the two of them agreed that it would be good if Will joined up with Charlie McBride’s outfit. Lucky for Will, one of Charlie’s men had been hurt a while back so he was short a man. He told him he would check him out for two weeks and if it worked, he would be kept on. Everything started like any other drive, even though this was Will’s first. He knew he had lots to learn, and he was more than willing to do so. There was another slim young man named, Bobbie, it was his first drive too, but he had been there for a while, so he had an idea of what was to be expected. Charlie told Will that Bobbie was the smartest guy in the outfit and learned the quickest. It would be a good idea for the two to help each other out, so the two of them were often paired in their jobs. The greatest thing about being with Charlie’s outfit was they had the best cook around. The food was great! Charlie, in Will’s opinion, was a fair trail boss and had lots of experience, so he figured he was lucky and would learn a lot. Little did Will Bishop know the unusual thing that he would learn on this drive, and what it would mean to him for the future. He would also learn what would happen to the woman that had been riding with him everywhere he went, sitting on his shoulder. She could bring him to tears, the pain was so bad! And the story begins…
Join Molly and Charlie as they travel west, each with their own stories but both with heartwarming adventures…
What did I like? Both of these stories are so warm and interesting. I love Harlan’s books because I know that he puts that extra effort into his research. The details are right down to the minor things that make the times right. Clothes, weapons, gear, wagons, history, places, and so many other things. It is like getting a history lesson with a warm and wonderful story.
What will you like? As I just said the details are the important thing, but the storylines are just amazing. When Harlan crafts his characters, they truly fit the storyline, bringing his work to life in the reader's mind’s eye. The details and descriptions are almost right out of a history book. If you have ever read one of his books, at the end in the Afterwards & Acknowledgements, he always thanks the many contributions of others, and you can see where he makes sure his storyline meets the details for the period that he is working in. It always amazes me the work that authors put into this part of their writing. This is what makes a book not just a book, but a GREAT READ! Add Harlan Hague’s new book “Trails West” to your Western Library today for an enjoyable read!
This book contains two complete stories with wonderful characters. In "This New Day" Molly, after suffering the death of her husband, decides to take her two children and travel the Oregon Trail via wagon train to a new life just as she and her husband had planned. The second story, "On the Sunset Rim" will follow a cattle drive from South Texas to Montana as the cowboys encounter all the hardships common to cattle drives. These are both excellent stories. This is the first book I have read written by Harlen Hague but I will be looking for more of his books. Be sure and read this one; I know you will enjoy these two stories as much as I did.
