Paradigm 2045 #2

Humanity's Promise

Rate this book
Less than three months have passed since Captain Charlotte Omandi and the crew of Earth’s first starship, the TSS Bladerunner, narrowly prevented an extinction-level event from wiping out Humanity. Omandi knows Earth remains on borrowed time until she meets with leaders of the Galactic Confederation to convince them that our planet no longer represents a threat. As Charlotte and her crew prepare to become the first humans to travel outside our solar system, a string of assassination attempts lead them to an unlikely mystery. Rejoin Captain Omandi, Misha Sokolov, James Branson, Linnea Sorenson along with new and returning members of Bladerunner’s crew, as they unleash Omandi’s Daemon in service to uncovering what might be the most heinous crime ever perpetrated on sentient life. Charlotte’s leadership and faith will be tested like never before as she guides her team to a critical decision. Do they submit to a seemingly unlimited galactic power and secure Earth’s future, or do they risk everything and fulfill Humanity’s Promise.

It is refreshing to find a new author who tells a great story that lets you feel as if you are inside the pages. Robert Ross has a way of inviting you into his books to sit on one of many comfortable chairs and watch the action unfold. All of his characters are different in all of his books. There aren’t any cut-and-paste personalities. I honestly feel that I could grab Branson and have a quick pint with him at the pub, throw axes with Misha, and enjoy a nice relaxing cup of tea with Charlotte to end the day. After listening to the books and then reading them, I realized that Nick Podehl had given them souls, and when reading the hard copy, I couldn’t help but hear the voice he gifted them. So far, I have to admit that I love Ross’s universe. The Genre has taken some significant hits in recent years, and Ross has filled some of that void. One thing about Robert Ross is that he welcomes comments both good and bad from his readers. Ross will give each person a response straight from the horse’s mouth. Unlike most authors, he doesn’t have his agent get back to you. I am genuinely looking forward to the next book in this series and his new works.
Paradigm 2045 is a work of fiction that makes you feel that this could be real. From the predictable responses of the in-universe politicians to the complete opposite from any protagonist in his book. I love the cultural references that he buries in the text from the past. Little easter eggs for those of us who saw Star Wars when it came out in the theater. You will be hard-pressed to put it down once you feel how good the air conditioning is on the ship and the coffee is to die for. The people always stay in character, and the good news is that the characters are developing as the story moves them along. Humanity’s Promise is a great read, and I must admit that I had difficulty finding a place to stop.

I really enjoyed this book. The characters continue to show depth and growth and the crew chemistry is reminiscent of Firefly and TNG. The story had a few really great "I didn't see that coming" moments. Also, I cannot overstate how hilarious these books are.

Side note: While I'm sure I still would have really enjoyed physically reading this book, I don't think I would have gotten as much out of it as I did listening to the audiobook. Nick Podehl absolutely kills it and takes the book to a whole new level. Same for Trinity's Children. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Yep, as expected, I stop the series here. Similar to the first, plot is pretty entertaining and world building is good, yet I just want to punch every one of the characters. (How many times can I listen to one woman OFFICER call another woman OFFICER, Barbie (as in doll), without wanting to punch her? How would you feel if your female captain found it falling down laughable that you worked so hard that sweat made your shirt see-through? These characters, ESPECIALLY the women are just repulsive.) Nick Podehl's fabulous narration got me through to the end, but not good enough to make me endure any more time with this cast of characters I just don't like.

Once again, Robert Ross didn't disappoint. I just really enjoy reading this series - I feel like I've watched a really well done movie because everything is so vivid in my mind but of course it's just a great book. I love the developing characters and feel like I know them all. I love the banter between them. I also like the way the author touches of various subjects (religion, racism, etc.) without being overly opinionated but causing you to think and consider your own thoughts and positions. Overall another great read - it's going to be tough waiting for the 3rd installment!

Betrayal and a trip

In this book we started out with three of the UN permanent security council members pretending to be nice, but they’re not. Assassination is the name of the game. Despite all of this the ship launches in time and we learn so much about the galactic federation which is no angel. This galactic federation reminds me of our government in the real world where one face is shown to the public and one in private. It will be interesting to see how the story plays out in the third book. The backstory is nice and presented over time.

I listened to Nick Podehl's very talented reading of Book 2 of Paradigm 2045. I enjoy the ensemble cast of memorable characters and all of the great sci fi references. The group has to travel far and wide to look for another hidden planet which may have the clues to Earth's continued survival. I've listened to this and book 1 multiples times. I look forward to Book 3. I will enjoy seeing Captain Charlotte figure out how to deal with the changes coming about.

I use ratings to decide which books I am going to buy, and I recently decided I am partially responsible for inflating the ratings on books. Either they were 5 star or 1 star. I decided to use the star rating more objectively as follows:

★★★★★ Great book! Can’t wait to read it again (and I will).
★★★★☆ Good book. I am glad I read this.
★★★☆☆ OK book. Nothing special but not bad.
★★☆☆☆ Not good. Why did I waste my time?
★☆☆☆☆ Lousy. I didn’t finish.

Still enjoying the series -although the scope it really ramping up fast!

If anything, i do wish the author wasn't so focused on Omandi's grinding of her teeth -at least not in the same way each time. I get it -i do it. But it has become noticeably repetitive in the books.

Still, I'm really enjoying the series, plan to jump right into the third book, and likely try another series by the same author soon!

I’m really enjoying this audiobook series, it’s incredibly well narrated. This second book continues from the first book, but doesn’t come to as satisfying a conclusion as there are more open plot lines. Looking forward to the third book to continue the story.

Keep getting beaten down, but never give up.

The crew of the Bladerunner were attacked at every turn, be it from their own planet to powerful aliens, but they not only survived but thrived. I am so excited for the next book.

Really enjoyed this book and look forward to the next in the series. Characters are interesting, smart, snarky, and fully developed. Story is good and well developed as well.
