A powerful knight who has served two kings becomes a tournament champion, but will a meddlesome woman and a wicked opponent bring him the greatest defeat of his life?
Will the lady he loves with his entire being slip through his fingers?
Ridge de Reyne (from The Red Fury) served both Henry III and Alexander, King of Scotland, but royal appointments were ultimately not the life he wanted. Determined to make his fortune and become a powerful warlord in his own right, Ridge has followed the tournament circuit for the past few years, accumulating wealth and making a name for himself as the unbeatable warrior known as The Black Storm.
Enter Lady Catherine de Tuberville.
Coming to the prestigious Durham tournament with her brothers and mother, Catherine is overwhelmed by the pageantry and spectacle of one of the largest tournaments in the north. In a chance meeting with Ridge, she discovers a handsome, kind, and somewhat shy man she’s quite interested in. But her mother has other ideas.
When Catherine’s mother insists her daughter find favor with a brutal, immoral knight who is the son of a French count, her underhanded actions could bring about the destruction of everything Ridge and Catherine hold dear. It’s mother against daughter in a battle of good versus evil, with the prize being Ridge’s very life.
With neither lady willing to surrender, it’s an epic battle in this stunning Medieval Romance.

Really sweet adventure set in Medieval Times, the story takes place at a tournament and our hero is Ridge de Reyne, special guest are the DeWolfe boys, William, Kieran, Paris and Stephan.
I very much enjoyed this tale of the tournament’s, I learned quite a bit I didn’t know before about competition, and there were wonderful description of the setting, tents and the exhibits themselves. Also having the rules explained was something new, I always wondered wear the Lists got their name from. It made the book more real and easier to imagine.
The characters as always in this authors books were interesting and entertaining, a wonderful bad boy to go against our Ridge and mess up the love story that’s developing with Catherine. I would love to see books of the de Tuberville brothers and see where they end up.
On the whole the book was not just entertaining but informative and very easy to read. Lovers of Medieval will enjoy this one.
I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review
Durham England 1238 A. D. He was the head of the most powerful team of knights, who competed in the circuit of tournaments. Known as "The Black Storm" due to leaving a path of destruction in his wake as he wins.
She was so excited to be at the tournament watching her brothers compete. Of course she knew her mother had in mind to find a her a husband to be rid of her.... In a twist it seemed her two little dogs had found the most handsome of knights and she was mesmerized by those blue eyes!
Unfortunately there was a villain, with a Napoleon complex, and even more her terrible mother, so the journey was not quite as easy as it could be!
I adored the wonderful characters and visiting with a lot of Kathryn's knights from other stories. She always make weaves such amazing tales that I can never get enough of!
I am a diehard Kathryn Le Veque reader, however this book didn’t make the same impression or impact that her books normally have done for me. I didn’t see the love and romance building between Ridge and Catherine. Ridge felt love at first sight, but Catherine just saw a nice Knight who her dogs didn’t bite. There was no super WOW moment to me. There were no good matches of jousting between the brothers or Northwood Knights which of course are the spectacular, William de Wolfe, Paris de Norville, Michael Hage, and Michael de Bocage against Ridge for entertainment reading to spice up the action. The key moment was Charles when he finally had enough and blew up and gave his mother the set down she deserved! Overall the book is still a good read it just doesn’t deliver the same explosion!
I received a free advanced copy from NetGalley and these are my willingly given thoughts and opinions.
A tournament champion falls for a young lady. The young lady falls for the tournament champion. Her elder brother approves, but their mother's greed has her negotiating with an unethical, cruel French knight for her daughter's hand in marriage. To thwart the mother, drastic measures are taken. A secret to take to their graves and a bond that can't be broken. Not as intense as some other Le Veque books, but it does have its moments. Mild descriptive sex.
Ridge de Reyne is making his fortune on the tournament circuit when he accidentally meets Lady Catherine de Tuberville. Immediately smitten with the beautiful Catherine Ridge is determined to get to know her better.
Catherine is attending her first tournament and is lost in all the excitement when her little dogs run away and she chases them right into the arms of Ridge de Reyne. A chance meeting with a handsome knight could change her life forever! As Ridge befriends her brothers Catherine and Ridge become closer Ridge asks her older brother to court her, but Ridge is not the only one interested in Catherine. When Catherine finds out her mother has approved for the other suitor to seek Catherine finds him detestable.
As the tournament begins so does the war between her and her mother. Not caring for anything other than prestige her mother will force the issue and it could mean Catherine’s dreams and hopes could be shattered.
I have to say I could not put this one down! I went through many emotions reading this story! I also laughed a lot! You have to love Kathryn LeVeque and her books and this one was such a joy to read! Just wonderful! Definitely recommend reading this book!
In our modern world, we have boxing and MMA; in the 1200s, there was the world of jousting tournaments. Remember The Knight's Tale movie? This story takes that setting to the next level and gives us a glorious story of good vs evil, love and friendship, heroes and villains.
Ridge is a tournament champion, a man of impeccable honor who is building his fortune one winning purse at a time. His team is the one to beat, and a finer set of chivalrous knights don't exist.
At the Durham tournament, Ridge's huge Irish wolfhound is set upon by a pair of tiny yapping terrors, whose owner, Catherine, follows them to Ridge's camp. Catherine's brothers are also competing at the tournament, while their mother plots to marry Catherine off in exchange for wealth and prestige. The man she has chosen is the worst sort of villain, drawing Ridge's protective instincts to the forefront just as he's beginning to recognize his undeniable attraction to the sweet-tempered Catherine.
The story builds into a splendid love story with plenty of tension and suspense. The attention to detail by the author is exquisite, rendering a story that effortlessly draws the reader back to the 13th century. I was instantly captivated by this beautiful story and devoured it in one sitting.
The HEA was triumphant and tender; everything a reader could hope for. This story is an example of the very best in medieval romance, and I highly recommend it for all romance readers. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
A protective knight, a damsel in awe of him, and three dogs make this an entertaining romance. I enjoyed the instant attraction between Ridge de Reyne and Lady Catherine de Tuberville as they were drawn together like magnets. The initial interaction between Catherine's two little dogs and Ridge's massive hound was hilarious. However, Catherine's mother was evil to the core and her machinations were appalling. I particularly enjoyed the author's descriptive passages of scenes of the tournament and felt as if I were there in person. Although Ridge is Catherine's hero, she was able to defend herself when the necessity arose, leaving her own share of mayhem. Unfortunately, more finesse was required when dealing with her mother. This romance is part of a series, but it nevertheless is a standalone and comes to a happy conclusion. I received a copy of this book as a gift through Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.
The author writes in great detail about the times, clothing, tournaments and food offered. This book kept you routed to the spot and made you feel like you were really there. Ridge and Catie met in unusal circumstances, but they were drawn to each other immediately. Her mother was a evil woman for what she was plotting for her only daughter. An excellent read from start to finish. I just reviewed The Black Storm by Kathryn Le Veque. #TheBlackStorm #NetGalley
Sir Ridge de Reyne is a champion on the tournament circuit. It's the way he has earned his living since leaving the service of two different kings. A huge tournament in Durham should earn him plenty. So the Black Storm and his tempests descend on Durham.
Lady Catherine de Tuberville is at her first ever tournament and is very excited. Her three brothers will all be competing. The only dark cloud for her is her mother, a woman who has no time for a defective daughter. She only came to see her daughter married off as quickly as possible, hopefully to someone who will benefit herself in some way.
A fascinating trip to the excitement behind the scenes at a tourney.
This is a high-speed historical romance, with a little danger and a nasty villian. Lots of great characters many of whom you will have met in other books.
It's a completely stand alone story that will keep you entertained from the first to last page.
The Black Storm by Kathryn Le Veque is a medieval romance in the Le Veque tradition. Ridge de Reyne is 39 years old and the undisputed champion of the tournament circuit. Lady Catherine de Tuberville is the only daughter of a minor noble who has his head in the clouds and a climber of a mother. Blythe De Tuberville only cares about the family Catherine marries into, nothing else. She wants noble and she wants rich. Catherine embarrasses her mother because she has a minor speech impediment. No one else seems to care. Catherine and her brothers have come to this tournament, the brothers to participate and Catherine so her mother can find her a husband. When her two dogs run off, Catherine follows and meets Ridge. She is immediately taken, as is he. He comes to the feast that evening, astounding his team, because he never attends. Not only that but he's washed and shaved and wearing a clean tunic: his finest. He all but offers for Catherine that evening, but does let her brother know he wants permission to court her. Meanwhile, her mother is negotiating with Renard de Luzie, the son of a French count. They spend the evening lying to one another. Blythe thinks she has found the perfect husband for Catherine. No one agrees.
One of the perks of this book is that we get a small interaction with William de Wolfe, Kevin Hage, and other knights of old. Ridge is a good character, liked and respected by all, except de Luzie. De Luzie wants be Ridge and he is not. He is jealous, a poor sport, and a killer. Catherine's brothers are aghast at what their mother had cooked up, but she is a slippery character, as well. It is a good story with a predictable, in many ways, ending. That is what romance is all about: a good story leading to the ending we all knew would be there. Le Veque is a master with a strong following, an author a reader can always count on. Loved it. Thanks, again, Kathryn Le Veque.
I was invited to read a free e-ARC of The Black Storm by Dragonblade, through Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #netgalley #theblackstorm
The bishops of Durham were planning one of the biggest tournaments around. These were not ordinary games they were meant for the most finest competitors in England and they had to prove their histories and bloodlines. Some of the professional circuits kept a division between the casual competitors and the professional competitors If an earl or prince pulled rank and wanted to go up against a professional competitor they had to allow it. This is what happened with the Earl of Pocklington who demanded to be paired up against a veteran tournament knight. Everyone tried to talk him out of it including his family. He ended up being killed when he was knocked from his horse and trampled. The knight was Ridge De Reyne “The Black Storm”. The House of Tuberville arrived and Catherine de Tuberville was so excited to see all that was going on g on around her. All three of her brothers were seasoned knights and they were there to prove themselves but their mother’s reason were quite different there was a dark little secret in their family. Her mother wanted to find a husband for the daughter she never wanted. Even though Catherine was a beautiful and accomplished girl she had a lisp that’s her mother thought would keep her from marriage. What happens is so exciting how Catherine and Ridge come together.
Classic le Veque Good vs Evil! And a Knight who overcomes all obstacles. We met Ridge de Reyne in THE RED FURY, where as a knight serving the king of Scotland, his conscience overcame his duty, and he assisted in the love story of Andrew d'Vant and Josephine de Carron. Now he's the top knight on the tournament circuit and has made quite a name for himself. He falls for Catherine de Tuberville, a beautiful girl with 3 loving brothers. Only thing is her mother is a greedy woman who wants nothing more than to increase her prestige by forcing Catherine to marry an evil knight. Through many obstacles and much danger, love triumphs and overcomes the obstacles put in their way.
It was so fun to see a cameo appearance by William de Wolfe, Paris de Norville, Kieran Hage and Michael de Bocage, and even more fun to see that William de Wolfe is not always invincible.
One small continuity problem. In the Author's Notes in THE RED FURY, Ms le Veque states that Ridge is the grandson of Creed de Reyne, hero of GUARDIAN OF DARKNESS. However, in the Author's Notes in this book, Ms le Veque says that Ridge is the son of Creed's older brother Ryton, which would make Creed Ridge's uncle NOT his grandfather.
As many reviewer's, this is one of my all time favorite author's. Her stories are unique and though written in Medieval Times, her take is from the English Perspective.
This story isn't about rival houses, but the ins and outs of Tournaments, which I enjoyed. I wanted to know more about the h's brother's bouts. I really liked the h's brothers and hope they have stories in the future, especially for Charles, the eldest. Also, one on Martin and see how the decisions he made effected him in the future.
There is violence, some of it against the h. Some suspenseful moments and a couple nasty villains to make the story very interesting! Enjoyed parts of the story on the dogs which added a sense of humor.
Lovemaking, within marriage, heat level 2 out of 5, only described once. This isn't a very slow burn romantic story.
No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA was a bumpy road to reach, little on romance and some spice. Lord's name used in vain several times. One tiny editing wording. (ljb)
The Black Storm, book two in Kathryn Le Veque’s De Reyne Domination series, is a love story for the ages. I listened to the audiobook, narrated by Paul Woodson. Sometimes, when you meet someone, you just know that they are important to you, and when Ridge De Reyne meets Lady Catherine D’Tuberville and her wee dogs, he knew that his life would change. Catherine came to the tournament to support her brothers, but her mother wants her to find a husband. Ridge is interested, but Catherine’s mother has other ideas and would do anything to prevent them from being together, including putting her daughter at risk. But Catherine’s brothers and a few other familiar faces at the tournament, are there to help! I loved this book! The excitement and pagentry of the tournament. The familiar faces of William De Wolfe, Kiernan Hage, Paris De Norville, Michael De BoCage and other knights of the great houses, was such a pleasant surprise! I do hope that Catherine’s brothers will get a story, especially Charles, as I loved him!
Katherine does it as always keeping you on your toes with twists the I never saw coming. She always make it great when you don't see it coming or you know a twist is coming but you're no where close to seeing what it is. Not like other authors who you see right through the plot twist before it come and you just say I knew that what was going to happen. while seeing a great romance forming she had me wanting to yell out loud at Catherine asking her what were you thinking. Or on pins and needles waiting to see what Ridge was going to do next. And as always it was wonderful the have a cameo appearance from my favorite knight William DeWolfe. I'm always thrilled to have a little story of my favorite knight future books it always gives little piece of the Katherine gives of their normal lives. Look forward to the next book. But of course ill be starting as soon as I hit submit review...lol
Another enjoyable read by Ms. Le Veque! Born a bastard, Ridge has served two kings and now fights in tournaments to earn money to repair his lands. He did not expect to meet a woman like Catherine, who enthralls him upon their first meeting. Catherine has dealt with a mother whom she could never please and who only saw Catherine as a means of increasing her status and wealth. Ridge does not have a title, but seeks to court Catherine, and has the support of her brothers, but a man of the past wants to destroy Ridge and stealing the woman he is courting would be the perfect revenge. Ridge, Catherine, and her brothers have to keep her safe from those who wish to use her for their own purposes. Will their courtship survive all the obstacles that will come their way? I received this novel from net galley and the publisher. Thank you! All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Ridge is known as the Black Storm in the tournament filed. He is unbeatable. Catherine has come to the tournament with her 3 brothers and her mother. Her mother plans to find her a husband. Unfortunately her mothers choice is not agreeable to anyone, especially Catherine and Ridge who have quickly become close. Ridge wants to marry her and her brothers are all for it. Her mother has chosen an evil man who is the son of a count. Her motives are completely selfish. She has never cared about her daughter and doesn’t seem to care that the son of the count has tried to kill her. He is evil personified and so is Catherine’s mother. Ridge is Catherine’s protector in all things. I won’t give away the ending . There are also some familiar characters in the story, William deWolfe, Paris and Keiren as well. Worth reading.
Kathryn LeVeque is know for some of the greatest love connections and stories. Of course nothing could ever top the Willian deWolfe and Jordan. It is a true Classic. I have to say though, the story of Ridge de Reyne and Catherine de Tuberville is something so Special. It touches your heart in so many ways. The emotional need and connection , both never experiencing love, compassion, protection, and safety. They met at a tournament. Her first and he was the Black Storm . The Champion. Popular. Men wanted to beat him. Women desired him. She was naive and he much older and experienced and yet they seemed to enchant each other upon meeting. Only there was was an evil Mother involved . Could she not allow her only Daughter find true happiness and love ? Was it too much to ask ? This story is Unforgettable and will stay in your heart.
Ridge de Reyne is a knight who has served two kings. He’s presently making his fortune on the tournament circuit as a man of integrity and honor. When he accidentally meets Lady Catherine de Tuberville his life changes. Catherine’s mother has her own plans and plots to marry Catherine off in exchange for wealth and prestige, she doesn’t care he’s the worst sort of villain she’s selling her daughter to her advantage. A captivating love story as Ridge and Catherine follow their hearts in the action adventure romance to only be thrown twist and turns by their adversaries. I have voluntarily read and reviewed the great book that has a story so intricately woven with history and romance as Kathryn le Veque takes you on an emotional rollercoaster.
A tournament knight, a beautiful girl, a wicked mother, and a villain. Throw in two fearless small dogs and one very large coward of a dog and you have all the ingredients for a LeVeque masterpiece. Once again Katheryn LeVeque takes you back in time and gives you a story with depth and soul. The characters draw you in from the first page and the story keeps you turning the pages. A glimpse of the De Wolfs men make you smile but this story is all Ridge and Catherine. He is everything you want in a Le Veque knight and she is brave and beautiful. A page turner for sure. Well worth the read
Another incredible De Reyne love story! Picture an older, very seductive man with muscles that just don't quit, dimples, dark hair and blue eyes. An unmarried young, sheltered, girl with long blonde hair, dimples and a cute little bit of a lisp, throw them together with intrigue, & evil machinations by her mother becoming the accomplice to a malicious man she thought had family prestige & money. Kathryn is books are always with every penny, so naturally I buy all the books possible and then get the audio books when or if the become available! ❤ Don't miss it!
I have never read a book like this before. Of course I know that jousting and tournaments took place many years ago, but have never read a book in that setting. It really was a wonderful setting for this great story. I absolutely loved all the characters. They were not flat or dull at all but so real that I could imagine them in front of me today. The plot and story was entertaining and riveting. I loved the first book in this series and now this one too. I cannot wait to read the next two. I also think it is unique and very neat that these books in the series are multi generational.
I always hate to see one of Kathryn Le Veque's books end. It means I then have to wait til she churns out another - it that's never fast enough for me! This one was a wonderful story of Ridge de Reyne and his almost immediate romance after meeting his lady, Catherine. They married within days after they met in order to avoid her mother's evil scheme to marry her off to an equally evil son of a count. As always, love prevailed. I am always so happy that this author fills the reader in on the names and number of the children that result from each marriage.
I love Kathryn's writing because it takes a very special writer to take a secondary character and have him become such an amazing hero.
Passion, love, loss, unique characters, intriguing and interesting plot, a fabulous setting, and visits from my favorite Kathryn Le Veque made this a book I will read and reread and reread.
I absolutely recommend this book and encourage you to read it ASAP!
I just reviewed The Black Storm by Kathryn Le Veque. #TheBlackStorm #NetGalley
I did not like this as much as I initially thought I would. I wasn't invested in the characters as much as I would have liked and I think this was because I don't think the author was. The romance between the hero and heroine was nice but just that...nice. There wasn't the angst that usually follows a book in this time period. There was a good villain and a very nasty mother that added some drama but still didn't provide the edge I was looking for. This will not stop me from reading other books by this author, though.
The reason is she has never taken the time to research any time period she writes about. She make too many errors in her books to have four stars. The only authors I have ever given five stars to in Medieval romance are Roberta Hellos who passed away and Elizabeth Chadwick. I have never seen an historical mistake in any of their books. They both are number one when it come to Medieval romance. Roberta Gellis had two collage degrees, one in Medieval history and she also had a collage degree in Biochemistry.
I really enjoyed the story of Creed so was looking forward to his nephew’s story. Ridge is an honourable knight who has to make a living on the tournament circuit. He has done well out of it so is quite well off. He accidentally meets Catherine one night and decides he wants more from life. He is not the only one interested in Catherine and the other knight is nothing but trouble as well as being extremely dangerous. The couple have to face da get before they can be together. An unexpected evil comes in the shape of Catherine’s mother. An interesting plot surrounding a burgeoning romance.
An unusual title for a Book Review featuring strong knights, giant war horses and cruel battles. Gentleness moves the book from average to very good. One wolf hound, two tiny feisty puppies, a handsome knight and a sheltered woman. Gentleness and tenderness floating from the author's pen in scenes between brothers and sister, knight and his lady, and even in descriptions of how the Wolf hound and the puppies relate.
Kathryn me Veque has done it again! I don’t know how she manages to intrigue me every single book but she does. Catherine is sweet if a bit impulsive and the chemistry between her and Ridge is undeniable. I do wish for something a bit more satisfying to happen to her mother but the fight between the dogs and the villain was a satisfying conclusion. Loved seeing William de Wolfe and the crew in action together.

Tournament games lead to deadly competition over more than just jousts!
Tournament champion Sir Ridge De Reyne is used to being pursued by the ladies and even unscrupulous knights, however, when his heart falls for the lovely Lady Catherine du Tuberville, the last thing he anticipates is deadly competition and rejection to get in his way! KLV has once again kept me up through the dark hours of the night unable to set aside this story until the last words were read!
