Workquake: Embracing the Aftershocks of COVID-19 to Create a Better Model of Working

Rate this book
The future has never been more uncertain for both employers and employees.

They face the same profoundly unsettling neither knows what skills they need to develop for the future. Futurists and the media tell us that over 50 percent of jobs today will soon be replaced by automation and AI.

Turnover is higher than it has ever been. The percentage of the workforce that is actively disengaged has never been higher. The shelf lives of certain skills are diminishing rapidly. Longstanding industries and industry leaders are being disrupted. These staggering changes are challenging our concepts of what a career really looks like today and how we should build organizations going forward.

This is the workquake.

It’s time we change the conversation. It’s time to talk about how being human has never been more critical and how we have more agency in applying our talents than at any other time in history. We need to have more real and honest conversations about how to build a better model of the future of work, one in which both employers and employees feel safe and energized.

COVID-19 has presented us the ideal opportunity to tackle this important challenge. Workquake is an attempt to articulate a compelling vision for the future of work through a number of stories, case studies, and author Steve Cadigan’s own experiences.

This book is a seismic shift in understanding the Future of Work.

For starters, the war for talent is over, and talent won.

If you are a corporate executive, that sentence should stop you in your tracks. If you are an employee, the sentence should make you smile with glee.

Either way, you need to read Workquake. The workplace is changing and the contract between employer and employee is not what it used to be. Especially as more and more people seek personal growth over traditional, linear career success.

As the author shows throughout this book, employees have more power in the work relationship than ever before. As witnessed by the current Grand Resignation happening in workforces around the world.

Employability is the new job security. The question is not if your working world will change; rather, the question is when. And how prepared will you be? Answer: much better if you read this book and contemplate the profound messages found within.

The keys to employee success in the future of work: adaptability, learning velocity, and agility. And guess what? The keys to organizational success in the post-pandemic world will be having employees and leaders with these three skills.

I believe the author is 100% correct. Now is the tie for individuals to tackle the most significant challenges and changes in their career journeys. And now is also the time for organizational leaders to build a better model for the employer-employee relationship.

For both parties, the smart move will be by reading and understanding the evolving workplace environment as documented and detailed by this top-notch talent management practitioner.

Excellent read.
Understanding the changing nature of work is always important - especially in a world where we’ve been forced into changes unexpectedly.

Generally, I try to read a few books a year in order to ensure that the teaching info is aligned.

This book was an excellent reenforcement of the need to teach learners how to work in ambiguous environments and develop learning habits.

Divided in two - one half for employees and one half for employers. It’s a good read.

It would be nice to see more workplace integration of learning with dedicated resources to make that happen.

This is a book for employees and employers, with examples of how work has changed and will change in the near future. Steve Cadigan asks great questions and provides several answers to help us reflect on how we want to design our professional path and how companies need to evolve to keep up with changes people are experiencing. I have always been focused on learning and trying new ways of working, it just came as natural to me. But along the way I have noticed it’s not for everyone. We are now surrounded by articles about AI and how everything will change. So it’s a great time to read insightful and thoughtful books such as this from Cadigan to decide how will you move forward.

What an inspiring read! I had the pleasure of seeing Cadigan speak on this topic prior to reading the book. This is a must read for not only HR professionals such as myself, but also for anyone looking to gain perspective on changing how we view retention and the development of staff.

In the face of high turnovers fresh and honest perspectives from both sides of employment. Wish I had the opportunity to work with someone like Gaby Toledano or Steve Cadigan!
