Wistful in Wyoming

Rate this book
What does a small-town rancher know about being out and proud? Absolutely nothing. But that’s about to change.

Jeremiah Urban has always hidden who he really is, but he’s tired of being alone and watching everyone around him fall in love. However, at forty-two, he fears the repercussions of coming out to the residents of Antelope Rock. Can he find a man he can trust to catch him if he falls?

Enter Dale Harris, the new foreman on a neighboring ranch, who’s comfortable in his own skin. He’s only got one rule: whoever he’s with must be true to themselves. That means Jeremiah is off-limits. So why can’t Dale leave the captivating man alone?

Will the strength of his feelings for Dale encourage Jeremiah to open the door and venture out of the closet that’s suffocating him?

Readers of “Wannabe in Wyoming”, your wait is over! If you read the first novel in the Antelope Rock series and couldn’t wait for Jeremiah’s story, you are going to be in absolute bliss when you read “Wistful in Wyoming”. JB Havens and Samantha Cole definitely do right by Jeremiah & Dale in Book 2 of the Antelope Rock series. Not only do they bring scorching heat to their story, they bring a beautiful feeling of love for love’s sake. Not to be confused with a sappy love story, because it’s definitely not, “Wistful” also tackles elements of self-acceptance, bigotry, and tolerance. While “Wistful” can be read as a standalone, I definitely recommend reading “Wannabe” first. The glimpses we get of Jeremiah in Book 1 are not going to be enough to prepare you for “Wistful”, but are totally worth it. Plus, the “Wistful” scenes with Willow, Nathan, and their new addition are much more heartwarming when you know their story, too. Never ones to shy away from tough subjects in their books, Havens and Cole tackle both sensitive and heavy situations with care and respect. This creates a deep emotional connection between the characters and enhances the overall and underlying themes of love, acceptance, and growth present throughout the story. Definitely a 5 star read for me, and of course chapter 25 left me looking forward to the next book with great excitement, too.

In an emotionally charged, slow burn, attraction, and personal denial story and we end up with a romance. The writing that these two authors bring to the story gets you feeling all of the emotions.

You are pulling for the characters, wanting them to give in to the attraction. However, both sides have their stories and reasons, and once they meet in the middle, they are free of their struggles and ready to open their hearts.

Thank you to Booksprout and the Author for the advanced copy; this is my voluntary review.

3.5 stars rounded down.

This was a 4 star read until some decisions made in the last quarter of the book.

No one is more shocked than me that I enjoyed a book by not only new-to-me authors, but also authors that usually write MF. Rarely do MF writers do MM well.

The length of this book nearly made me pass. And honestly, this book needed to be about 50 pages shorter. I skimmed quite a bit. There was just a lot of filler and menial meandering backstory stuff and it just needed to be cleaned up a bit. Not to mention the bonus epilogue was ANOTHER 50 pages. But I did like the addition of it. It made their story feel more complete.

I loved these guy’s love story for the most part. There were some issues but it wasn’t problematic and I felt the love and passion. I live in a rural area bordering Wyoming and it is indeed not a great place for queer folk.

Which brings me to my issues. First of all, having two random sections from the perspective of two characters we don’t know AT ALL out of the blue around 75% was utterly bizarre. Who the fuck is Ethan?! I don’t care! It was so weird!

**** Spoilers****
Also, the late stage hate crime against an MC was REALLY unnecessary and felt like it was added for shock value and honestly, it brought down the quality of the book so far I wanted to DNF. Yea, we get it, Jeremiah was stressed about being out and his boyfriend getting nearly killed by bigots would make great drama, but it was so egregious and cheap. And I’m pretty mad it was included because I was so happy to finally be enjoying an MM book for the first time in forever.

There was also talk early about how they were going to get tested and one MC always used condoms, even for BJ’s with previous partners… then gave the other MC an unprotected BJ the next day… before they got tested. Continuity issues like that make me batshit.

I have zero interest in reading about Jeremiah’s sister because she’s kind of awful in this book. But I will read more MM from these authors despite my issues. There is potential here.

And no, I didn’t read the previous MF book to this and I don’t feel like I missed much.

With all of my complaints, even with the length of this book, I didn’t put it down until I was done. I did mostly enjoy it, and think that these authors have the potential to write solid MM. They just need some more editing and to stay away from cliche gay plot points.

I only got 3% in. No rating.

I should have read the whole sample, or at least the whole prologue, in order to avoid the author's adoration of repeating the MC's fear of coming out. Even though WE WITNESS IT. Very not polished, this author. Makes me wonder if there was an editor involved at all.

Quite an emotional journey through this story. Strong attraction just isn't enough when you are a guy in a small fairly bigetted town and desperately want another man. Jeremiah has never admitted to anyone he is gay, he struggles now with how strongly he feels about Dale. For Dale, he has been openly out for years but only one relationship, he was kept hidden in that and swore he would never go through that experience again. This is full of struggle and pain, longing for understanding and acceptance, the need to be loved for who and what they are. I felt for both characters, but knew that they had more support and acceptance than either realised. Both of them were easy to love and like, guys I would happily want to know. The sexual content is steamy hot but doesn't swamp the story and overtake them getting to know each other and fall in love. It is emotional and I found myself choked on more than one occasion, towards the end as things started to settle and turn towards them wanting to build more I had my fingers crossed. I found this read gripping, powerful and inspiring, it consumed me at some points when feelings were extra high or fraught with nerves or worry. Most of all the story is a fight to be free to be themselves and be together. I felt it passionately, every single part of it. Started 25/8/21 Finished 26/8/21

Despite starting slowly and ending abruptly, Wistful in Wyoming was certainly a good read.

Warning: If graphic homophobic violence is a trigger, this book is definitely not for you.

We met Jeremiah in Wannabe In Wyoming and we also briefly meet Dale. Now we get their story and what a story it is!! These two spend a lot of time dancing around each other and fighting their attraction to each other. Jeremiah is terrified of coming out of the closet while Dale is out and not ashamed of it at all. You wonder as you read the story if these two will make it but as you read, the emotions grab your heart. Jeremiah's fear of coming out is very emotional and at first Dale doesn't understand that. As the relationship develops, each begins to understand each other a bit more. Their connection is "soul deep"! Jeremiah's sister is brilliant as a secondary character so I now want her story, and of course we get to see Nathan and Willow. Can Dale and Jeremiah work through the fears, the hate and the bigotry or will Jeremiah forever be stuffed deep in the closet? And that epilogue? Oh my, I'll admit to tearing up a bit!! It was what I was hoping for!!! These two authors writing together are magical. They bring the characters to life in such a way, you want to go find Antelope Rock, Wyoming! Looking forward to many more books in this series because there are so many characters that need stories!!!!

How others perceive him has kept Jeremiah Urban in the closet and fighting his true self. But when Dale Harris comes into his life and shakes things up can Jeremiah take the chance and break down the doors that he has forced himself to stay behind? Or will Dale's love need to stay hidden to save Jeremiah's reputation? Filled with an emotions that will pull on the heartstrings of the reader this was an awesome read. Samantha A. Cole and J.B. Havens once again do not disappoint. Their honest and true portrayal of life circumstances that can make or break a relationship that were written with understanding and hope.

Wistful in Wyoming is the second book in this series. Wannabe in Wyoming is the first we met Jeremy there as the sweet in the closet neighbour from Willow. Dale was there also that is when Jeremy and Dale met for the first time. Dale came to work for Willow with the Alpacas. I have been looking forwarded this story and it did not disappoint me. I love Jeremy and Dale and I felt for Jeremy so scare out of his mind to come out of the closet. This is such a heart warming story with some judgemental people and some scares. I loved it.

Wistful in Wyoming is an enchanting story. That's packed with feels as Jeremiah courageously takes steps to out himself and claim the man he has been lusting after in a small town that has its fair share of bigoted and ignorant people.

And with an enthralling romance that was both sweet and sexy, and wonderful characters; this was a hard to put down story that I would happily recommend to others.

This MM story will give you all the feels.

What does a closeted 40 something man living in a small town in Wyoming do when he falls for an out and proud pansexual? Well, he lets his fears drive him until he gets the courage to be who he is and finally grab the happiness he deserves.

Well thought out plot, interesting storyline, great characters and true to life scenarios that have you thinking this is real life. Steamy as all get out with a HEA that tugs at your heart.

I loved the first book in this series and I eagerly awaited Jeremiah and Dale’s story. Having a gay brother I felt their struggles personally. Dale didn’t want to be someone else’s dirty little secret. Jeremiah is mindful of the close minded community he lives in. Alth9 I don’t think he realised just how much support he’d receive. This is a passionate and heartbreaking story of courage and love. Once 8 started 8 was absolutely hooked. Can’t wait for the next book now.

Wistful in Wyoming is the second book in the dual author series Antelope Rock written by J. B. Havens and Samantha A. Cole, and if the first two books are anything to go by, this is one series that will quickly become addictive! I must admit that I don’t read a lot of M/M books, and that’s not intentional, it just is, but I was chomping at the bit for Jeremiah’s story from the moment I met him in Wannabe in Wyoming (book one in the series). Respectable and reliable, Jeremiah quickly became fast friends with his quirky, tattooed city girl neighbour and found acceptance and genuine camaraderie that he had never experienced. But his inner demons constantly battled with his true self and hiding his predilections from everyone else was slowly destroying his soul. Add to the mix a brand-new foreman on his friend’s ranch and his once pleasant and amicable demeanour was disappearing fast.

As this story unfolds you not only shed tears and ache for the wonderful, caring, and tortured man who fights constantly with his identity, but you grieve for the happiness he has denied himself for so many years. Letting someone special into your life is a major decision, but when that someone demands that you be yourself and the consequences be damned, you’re left with the unimaginable terror that bigots who thrive on ridicule and humiliation will be the catalyst of revealing your secret and opening the door to love.

Wistful in Wyoming is a heartfelt, emotional, and real story that highlights the small-mindedness of people who fear what they don’t understand and reap pleasure from inflicting verbal and physical pain simply because someone chooses differently from them. The authors have collaborated to write an intense, gut-wrenching, and unfortunately accurate account of the stigma that is still associated with same sex couples. There is absolutely no way Jeremiah and Dale’s story will not touch your heart unless you don’t have one, as their story is told with the utmost love and understanding. A powerful and insightful story that will stay in my heart forever and definitely be reread in the future.

Jeremiah Urban has been hiding who he really is all of his life, but as he watches his best friend Willow start a family of her own he starts wanting more for himself. But, can he have that and maintain his standing as a ranch owner in a very small, and sometimes small minded community?

Dale Harris knows from just one look exactly who Jeremiah is and he’s definitely interested in learning more about the rancher. But, he’s been in a relationship with someone in the closet before who refused to acknowledge what they had, leaving him heartbroken and vowing to never be with someone who wasn’t “out” again.

With a fiery attraction and fairly combustible interactions from the start, can Dale help Jeremiah gain the courage to be true to himself or will their relationship be doomed to being neighbors only interacting when necessary?

I have to be honest, it took me a minute to get into this book, only because the couple was m/m. While I have read and enjoyed m/m books before, those relationships typically had a third who was female. So, this felt a bit awkward to me because it was out of my personal experience being in a m/f relationship myself. That being said, before long, the m/m romantic aspect didn’t matter at all because the characters were so well developed and the story well thought out!

Dale seems so self assured and comfortable in his skin. He loves who he loves and he doesn’t really care what people who don’t know him think. But, underneath, this tough ex marine has a very vulnerable side as well. His heart has been broken before, and he knows Jeremiah has the power to crush him again.

Jeremiah is a storing and compassionate man, but he is terrified of outing himself because small town life is all he has ever known. I adored watching him gain self esteem after spending time with Dale and finally allowing himself to be who he was and having the courage to do so publicly and not hide away anymore.

This couple really brings out the best in one another and I loved how they went from a rocky start to a pretty epic finish. Another fantastic collaboration between Samantha A. Cole and J.B. Havens! 4.5 stars.

Wistful In Wyoming
Antelope Rock #2
Samantha Cole, JB Havens
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was the most beautifully written, well thought out and put together story I’ve read in a long time. JB and Sam have done amazing job of bringing Dale and Jeremiah to life, and a life it is! This is not your normal romance, it’s so much more, go in with an open mind and come out with a new look on life…

If you’ve read Wannabe In Wyoming, you’ll know we met the loveable neighbour, Jeremiah Urban. He was best friend and confidante to Willow, and pretty much instant enemy to Dale Harris! Their non relationship was funny as it was awkward and painful. Jeremiah is gay he knows it, feels it every time he sees pain in the a*s Dale, but refusing to come out of the closet means Dale wants nothing to do with him… their chemistry is off the charts and living in neighboring farms they’re really living in each other’s pockets. So while he lives in denial Dale continues to push his buttons like no one else.

So it has be said, while M/M stories, and real couples in general have stigmas attached to them, small towns like Antelope Rock are just the worst, horrible people sticking their noses into others business, giving their opinions on matters that are not theirs to give, this is what Jeremiah fears most. He’s lived his life hidden in the shadows, but he’s about to face life head on for the first time in his life.

Dale has always been out of the closet, he doesn’t care for snickers or bigots, what he really wants is Jeremiah, but won’t have a relationship hidden like a dirty secret… he’s short with Jay, this is how it is… if he wants to see Dale he’s going to have to deal with the small town mentality. On a journey to life and live Jeremiah sees what he’s been missing, but the fear of the outside world is always in the back of his mind… Dale helps open Jeremiah up to the life he wants, it’s not without nastiness, threats, punches and blood, but together they’ll write their own story together.

There was a lot about this I liked. I did struggle with some of the language used. It was a bit too flowery for me and I just couldn't imagine two men (especially an ex marine and a cowboy) in their early forties talking like that.

The good did outweigh the bad though and this is one of the best books I've read about a character in the closet. It just felt different - there was no "beard" or "forcing" himself to sleep with other women for appearances. Jeremiah knew he was gay, travelled for the occasional hook up and a lot of fears he had around coming out were valid. I like how this followed Jeremiah as he learned to accept himself and acknowledge he deserves love.

We had growth for Dale too. I like how the author's addressed his early ultimatum's as unfair and how he supported and help Jeremiah accept himself and his sexuality.

I also liked that Jeremiah told off Willow and Jenna and that he had a really lovely support network. Other than some of the language used you could tell we had a romance between proper adults lol - no ow/om drama or miscommunication.

I wish the punishments for the villains of the story were concluded. We know they get arrested but I would have liked the sentencing included.

For some reason I just knew that Kam would have a book even though his appearance was so brief - I think it was the description of his appearance lol. I'm not really into MF anymore so I am unlikely to read those but I'm looking forward to Ethan and Kam's story and possibly Toby's?

Sweet MM romance

No plot spoilers
No real potential triggers although there is a homophobic attack.
There are a couple errors that irritated but certainly not enough to detract from the book.
The characterisation is spot on, with individual personalities that soon get under your skin and take up residence to become the 'people who live in your mind'
The plotline is engaging, primarily dealing with the courage needed to be who Jeremiah truly wants to be in a tiny community.
It's engaging and prompts some laughter and of course, some tears.
The slower pace is needed in order to walk with Jeremiah as he gathers his courage and makes his journey of discovery, but I felt at times that the book became a little repetitive and angsty.
I didn't obtain the utter immersion I felt during the first book in the series, but that's probably more to do with my life at the moment than anything lacking in the writing style.
Unlike many of Samantha Coles Trident series, this is not BDSM based, but as with every other book co-authored with JB Haven, the writing is seamless and flawless.
There are some MM sex scenes, beautifully written, so if that offends don't purchase the book. There is also some swearing.
It is definitely a book I will read again and again, the slow burn romance guarantees that!
I have no problem recommending the series.

An emotional story of personal denial

If you read Wannabe in Wyoming book 1 in the Antelope Rock series, I am sure you were waiting for the story of Jeremiah and Dale. This is an M/M romance with older characters and the sweetest separate epilogue you have to pick up!

Jeremiah is a lifelong resident of Antelope Rock, a community leader and successful rancher, and scared out of his mind that anyone would find out that he is gay. But loneliness is a strong emotion. He and Dale share definite chemistry, but Dale is not one for subterfuge. There is emotional tension galore in this story. The push and pull between Dale and Jeremiah span some time, and you get a unique insight into the emotional toll prejudice takes on individuals seen as different by society. There are also really funny moments in the story to break some of the tension. Well worth the read.

Samantha Cole and JB Havens really nailed it when they penned this deeply emotional love story. Wistful in Wyoming is bit as special as Wannabe in Wyoming. A man at a crossroads. Does he keep hiding who he is, remaining lonely and without love? Or, does he acknowledge his wants, needs and sexuality in order to have a chance to be with the man of his dreams?

Jeremiah Urban is an extremely sensitive, private man with emotions that run deep into his soul. Make no mistake though, he's is no wimp. He's a range hardened, rough and tumble cowboy. Dale Harris, ranch manager and former Marine, sparks Jeremiah's interest like no other man ever has. But, Dale is unwilling to deny or apologize for who he is. If you don"t like it...tough. He won't be anyone's dirty little secret. He's had his heart broken before and refuses to put himself in that situation again. It seems that every time these two take a step forward they go back two. In their small town they find acceptance but they also have to face their share of bigoted bullies. Yet, love wins out in the end.

Individually, Samantha Cole and JB Havens are outstanding authors, together they are magnificent. "Wistful in Wyoming" is the second book in the Antelope Rock series. It has all the things a great story has and then some. I fell in love with Jeremiah's character in "Wannabe in Wyoming" and was beyond thrilled when I learned that his and Dale's story would be next. The story is so well written and the characters are fabulous. I do not know how Samantha and JB do it, the story flows right from the start. There are times that I thought for sure my heart was going to bust both from joy and sadness. There are a lot of laugh out loud moments, which I totally expected from these characters. It was great to not only see Jeremiah and Dale's story unfold but also to see Willow and Nathan's story continue. I can not wait to see whose story is next. This book has the best bonus epilogue, so be sure you do not miss it!!!

A wonderful story and ending to the tease we were given in Book 1 where the sparks were flying between Jeremiah Urban and Dale Harris seem to be leading to a entice romance. The obstacle that keeps that from happening is that at 42 years old, Jeremiah has kept his sexual preference for men hidden from everyone in his life except for his two new best friends, Willow and Nathan. I was enthralled by the writing of Samantha A. Cole and J. B. Havens who on their own are awesome authors but combined they are a team that most of today's authors will find it hard to compete with. If you are apprehensive about reading a MM book, let me reassure you that this book is worth the read as it is funny but tender, hot and sexy when needed as well as some wonderful endearing moments as their story comes to a powerful end.

What a wonderful story!! This shows that true love can happen for anyone. That love is what you make it. Consenting adults should be able to love one another without other people sticking their noses where they don’t belong. I loved that Jeramiah and Dale get their Mr & Mr. HEA This story had everything! Excitement, danger, love and everything in between. The writing in this was simply excellent. It gave its characters true life feelings that must affect a lot of people that don’t fit into societies “norms” I laughed and cried for these two characters. Full on tears running down my face and happiness when things went right. Nerves when they didn’t and they were written as honorable men. I adored this look at the other side of the coin. It shows what humanity is capable of, good and bad, and all that is in between.

Wow! I haven’t read a lot of m/m book. Most of those are ones included in a series. I have to say that I would have missed a fantastic book if it wasn’t included in the Antelope Rock series. Samantha A Cole and J B Havens have written a beautiful emotional love story that had me laughing and ugly crying and unable to put it down. Jeremiah Urban is a ranch owner in is deep “in the closet”. He lives in a small rural town with the usual snobs. When his BFF hires Dale Harris, a handsome hot retired Marine to run her alpaca ranch Jeremiah wishes he could be his true self and experience the freedom Dale feels with his sexuality. Fear keeps him from being truly happy when Dale tells him he doesn’t date those in the closet. Grab this one and enjoy the story of Jeremiah and Dale.

What do you get when you have a collaboration between two of the best authors around = you get excellent reads. We are introduced to Jeremiah in Wannabe Wyoming and then Dale. This is their story and is a M/M story so if this isn't your trope then I say at least try and these ladies write M/M well.
Jeremiah is in the closet in rural Wyoming and meets Dale , this is their story of falling in love and working through their fears and the bigotry they encounter.
The authors have created a world where the characters feel real and you wish you could visit. I once said Samantha.A Cole could write a phone book and i would read it , i still stand by that assesement but now include J B Havens too in that category.

I saw the cover of this book and I had to read it! I love a good Cowboy romance and this one has a real true life feel. Jeremiah is afraid to admit who he really is so he has been in the closet his entire life .. and now he feels like life has passed him by. Dale is out and will never be someone's secret again, so it seems pretty hopeless for these two.. It is a slow burn story as both of them have very emotional reasons for feeling the way they do. I do not want to give away all of their struggles and hopes.. but I will say this story is a perfect mix of happiness, angst, hope, fear, sweet and steamy.. I received an ARC and I recommend for those who cannot put down a true journey of finding ones self confidence and true love along the way! oh and Cowboys!!!

Dale & Jeremiah

This is the second book in the Antelope Rock Series written by Samantha Cole and JB Havens. I absolutely love the world these two amazing authors created and can’t wait to read the next one.
Jeremiah was a key player in the first book being the next door neighbor of Willow and I couldn’t help but fall in love with his character even while reading Willow and Nathan’s book. Jeremiah getting his own book with Dale was perfect, a great slow burn of learning to love yourself while falling in love with the other half of your heart, and telling the whole world to kiss your butt if they don’t like it. Sigh....

What an amazing story of love.

Despite it being a rocky start, to say the least. This couple just melted my heart.

We met them back in book one of the series. Jay is the best friend of Willow, the owner of the Alpaca ranch next door. Dale is the foreman of Willows Alpaca ranch.

Living in a small town the repercussions of coming out can be devastating. But holding back your feelings for someone could lead to loosing the most important thing in your life.

What would Jay choose?

I can't wait for more from this series. I am so glad the authors decided to write together again. A great pairing.

I have been waiting patiently for this book and omg this book was absolutely fantastic and off the charts and if you love a great m/m story this book is got you. I found myself connecting to the characters emotions and pain and heartbreak. As we left off from Willow And Nathan's wedding we met Dale her new foreman and of her BFF and neighbor Jeremiah butting heads but when one kiss is all it takes to start the fire it's doused with water as Dale will not be anyone's dirty secret. Can Jeremiah open that door or will he be to scared of the consequences? This book was absolutely phenomenal and you will definitely fall in love with these men.

I really enjoyed this book. Everyone deserves a happy ever after and the freedom to be yourself. Jeremiah and Dale have to fight narrow minded people to find their happy ever after, but with the support of family and friends they have the strength to fight for it. This book is not only filled with love an romance but also with the very real struggles that a lot of gay men have to face. An amazing book with fantastic characters.
