What happens to a fraction of a hive mind? And then what happens after that? How do you write about a fic that you thought you’d never get to read and is practically perfect in every way?

If the triumph of DCWT is teasing apart what it means to live through the end of the world and protect the ones you love, the triumph of Aftermath is that it is simultaneously prequel and sequel to DCWT, and it shows us just how much our protagonists love each other. It knocked me out with love! God!

Also, getting the infamous “I am so embarrassed for you right now” scene that’s referenced in DCWT *from Lightcap’s perspective* slayed me. SO GOOD.

I’m not sure that we’ll ever get another cleanwhiteroom piece of writing, or, if we do, how long we’ll have to wait for one. (This first surprise reappearance was just about six years in the making!) But if this is her last work, then by all means, hell fucking yeah.
