The Train

Rate this book
When a train’s whistle sounds in the distance, what do you remember? How does it make you feel?
For Rachel Crews, a victim of domestic violence, the sound of the train’s whistle meant fear and pain. For Sam Burkett, a disfigured and disabled Army paratrooper, the sound of the whistle meant nothing at first, he was too numb from the effects of World War II. However, he soon learned to listen to the train’s whistle, the manifestation of God’s Voice.
Even though Sam and Rachel never met, God knew them and how much they needed each other. Together, and with God’s help, these two people learned to heal, forget, and forgive.

Joyce Crawford is a fifth-generation Floridian who grew up in a small town in north-central Florida, surrounded by her extended family. Her childhood memories comprise of the church, hymns, Bible reading, songbirds, magnolia trees, railway tracks running through the town, cows eating citrus, and thistles growing in the pasture. These memories became an integral part of her books.

Joyce struggled with reading since the fourth grade. She was never an ardent reader, nor did she write stories at an early age. However, Joyce is no longer ashamed to admit that she has dyslexia and a brain imbalance. She believes that "The Lord helps me overcome my handicap by giving me a vivid imagination and a desire to learn and achieve."

Joyce started her writing career with a children's chapter book series, 'The Adventures of Thelma Thistle and Her Friends.'

Joyce's shift from children's books to Christian historical novels is a strategic move that showcases her versatility and highlights her ability to delve deep and address a diverse audience. While still possessing the same playfulness and creative imagination, Crawford weaves a novel emphasizing a God who respects humanity and never dictates but has generously given free will.

Joyce's primary strength is her ability to transform something simple into its most extraordinary potential by revealing its cryptic meaning. She fills her writing with excitement, discovery, and magical moments, and Crawford's picturesque writing style can take readers deep into the story and to greater heights. With a passion for living and a love of life and God, Crawford is in her best element in this genre.

The uplifting story of Sam will take your breath away. This is the kind of book that would revive your lost spirit to God.

The story was inspiring. Sam, as a lieutenant soldier from the 101st Airborne Division, U.S. Army Air Corps, is returning to his hometown. But his life was far from being normal. His physical body was heavily injured from the war, and after many months of healing, he is now ready to face the new challenges in his life. Without a family to greet him, his heart was full of melancholy. And the whistle of the train for him symbolizes bad luck. But things changed in the most dramatic way when he met Rachel, who later became the woman of his life. Their story was a perfect example of light behind dark clouds.

There’s nothing that I have for the author other than high admiration and respect. Her works were just one of the best to boost your faith in God and claim His promises. Read this book and be fascinated by these wonderful, life-changing lessons.

I have to admit, this book has completely blown my mind and gave me a new perspective of faith and how to face fears in life. Other than the bible quotes, the author has provided a thorough, profound, and interesting story to remind us that He’s there and He is with us. The wonderful story of Sam Burkett would surely uplift one’s soul. It’s very motivating and full of hope. The life of Sam is a beautiful epitome of hope.

As an invalid soldier returning home, he longed for the love of a family, yet there was no one he could call on to. With his condition, it made matters worse. But he proved that a genuine heart could really find genuine love. Rachel was the answer to his longing. They met unexpectedly in an unprecedented time. Their love grew as time went by. Sam’s goodness was rightly paid off. With this book, I could say that nothing is impossible – definitely worth the read.

I must say that this book is hard to put down. It made my heart bleed and healed it. Honestly, this book made me cry many times, who couldn’t? It’s filled with emotions and touching events that would surely tear your heart apart. I love how the author, Joyce Crawford, named the angels in a very interesting way. It made me laugh as well upon learning their names and their mission to fulfill.

The book is relatively easy to read. It wasn’t too long and too short—just about enough to brighten up your day. Sam, as a CGI soldier returning from WWII, was far from being normal. His injury was so great that it took several weeks for him to slowly accept the reality. But thanks to these angels who tried their best to enlighten Sam during his tough times. What I like the most about this book is that it’s full of positivity. I have to recommend this book to everyone.

The Train by Joyce Crawford centered the story of Sam Burkett, a Lieutenant returning home from WW 2. In the beginning, his life was filled with misery. For one, due to the frostbite he got during his deployment in Germany, he got his limbs amputated and his face disfigured. His life became hopeless and meaningless. To add to the extent of his depression, there was nobody to greet him because he had no family. His parents had passed away already, and he was late to know. However, it’s a good thing that there are those wonderful angels who took notice of Sam’s melancholic life.

These are just of the few things that the readers would know about as they read the story of Sam. There are still a lot of ups and downs happening in his life, but one thing he never did was to give up. The optimism this book has is on the next level. I totally enjoyed the read.

This book is a timeless manuscript to remind us that God is in control. It gives life meaning.

The storyline was very interesting and engaging. Honestly, it’s hard to put down. It kept on the line until I finished the last chapter, and I didn't regret reading the whole book.

It started in the year 1945 when Sam Burkett, a retired soldier, returned home. However, there was nobody to welcome and greet his homecoming. But God saw Sam’s frustration and depression. He knew that Sam had gone through a lot of tough times in life. Therefore, God sent angels to brighten up his life. From that moment, his life changed, but the best is yet to come.

I must say that the scenes were very touching and poignant. I couldn’t help myself but cry at the end. It was a surprising ending, and it’s the most perfect ending I’ve read so far. This book is a must-read!

When you think of quitting, don’t do it yet. Read this book first and let it fascinate you! This amazing book by Joyce Crawford is filled with God’s promises. With sprinkled bible verses and profound true-to-life events, this book is going to completely change your perspective in life and engulf it with optimism.

Just like Sam, anyone could be victorious in their own unique way. As a returning GI from World War 2, Sam's life was twisted due to the extent of the injury he got in the war. It made him think that life for him was meaningless. Perhaps for that time being, but God is not yet ready to give up on Sam. Angels were sent to comfort him. But the best thing that happened to Sam’s life was when he met Rachel. And that made all the difference.

This book reminded me that no matter what happened or how difficult life is, God is always there.

This book is on fire! Believe me, when I say on fire. For one, it’s loaded with life-changing lessons taken from the life of Sam. You would be surprised at how the author conveyed the message of hope to overcome our struggles and fears in life.

It was almost a perfect day in the month of August 1945. Soldiers are returning home from war to their beloved hometown. But upon riding the train, there was only one melancholic heart, and that was Sam’s heart. There were no people to welcome him, his parents died, and he had no wife and kids.

Joyce Crawford had really portrayed a story that would stand the test of time. This novel focused on Sam and Rachel’s lives. They were not meant to be, but love knows no boundary. I cried upon reaching the end. I love everything about this book, from beginning to end.

This book is one of a kind. Its storyline is very surprising and touching. I have to admit that it made me cry a river of tears. It is so touching and moving. However, the atmosphere that this book has is filled with positivity and optimism. Easily, this book earns a 5 out of 5 stars rating. I love everything about it.

When Sam, a Lieutenant Soldier whose life was disabled due to his injury, returned to his hometown in Florence, Kentucky. Without a family, a wife, and kids to greet him, you could really feel his sadness, hopelessness, and discouragement to continue living life. Luckily, these angels gave Sam hope and courage. There, he started to rebuild his confidence and tried to live life again.

An honest poignant life story of Sam that would melt your heart in the most dramatic way.

When Sam returned home, he was far from happy. After serving many years in the military, life wasn’t easy for him. His left leg was replaced with prosthetics, his hands were unusable, and his face was unrecognizable due to the frostbite when he was assigned in Germany. Little did he know that his life was going to change for the better, far from what he expected. Thanks to the presence of the funny little angels, they gave more life to the story.

This book is very well written. It depicts true and real emotions that the readers could relate to. I’m sure it’s going to rekindle faith, love, hope, and courage that has been washed away by pain.

This book by Joyce Crawford is one of the best. Every bit of it is a shining jewel. The life story of Sam springs from the well of the living water from above. Loaded with powerful and moving insights, this book is perfect for everyone, whether you are non-Christian or Christian.

Sam’s homecoming was far from being exciting. He has no family, wife, and kids to welcome him. In short, Sam is living alone. But he didn’t give up on life that easily. He stood up and held his head up high. Thanks to the help of the lovely angels who didn’t leave Sam in his most devastating times. On the other hand, the bible verses that the author included were absolutely handy. They give an overall view of what the chapter is all about.

Are you looking for an inspiring and motivational book to read that would surely not waste your time? Then I’m sure you’re going to love this Christian novel written by one of the most prolific and dynamic authors, Joyce Crawford. This book has a different take on what faith really is and what hope really is.

With Sam, Rachel, and Kayla, they give life to the story. Each character has a different story, yet they managed to engage me in keeping reading. And I’m glad I did! With these three main characters, the one that stood the most is Sam. He manifested loyalty, love, and hope to every reader. If you’re not a crier, then I must say that to get ready to cry for this book is going to melt your heart away.

There’s no perfect life, but we can live life perfectly – no hatred, no judgment, no regrets. Upon reading this book, it took me to a deep realization that God is always there no matter how hard the times are.

The story of Sam has gripped my heart. It was so heart-pounding that I couldn’t contain myself but cry. Imagine an amputated soldier returning home with no wife, kids, or family to greet him. Surely, that must be really sad and depressing. He settled-in in his old house near a train and found amazing people. You would be surprised at how God has worked in his life in the most unexpected way. The ending was so satisfying. Each scene is intense and in-depth. I love this book.

The Train is a warm and inviting Christian faith-based novel that is going to uplift your soul. The characters were very inspiring, and they possess a profound image that would surely catch every reader’s attention.

If you think that God is hiding himself during our downtimes, I suggest reading this book. In fact, angels were sent to us to comfort us during our hardships. As Hope, Faith, Serenity, and Curiosity departed heaven, their mission was to find a person to uplift their broken spirit soul. Then they found Mr. Sam Burkett, a soldier of World War II who is returning home with a hopeless heart. Most of his limbs were amputated due to the frostbite which he got in Germany, where he was assigned. Without a family to go home, Sam’s life is filled with negativity. Luckily, his healing helped him accept the status quo and continue living. There he settled back in his hometown in Florence, Kentucky. But God’s love is so great that he wasn’t forsaken. You’ll be amazed at how his life turned from mourning to blessing.

I must admit that this book has made me cry. The scenes were so touching and moving. I love every moment of Sam and how he managed to enjoy life. The message of this book is simple yet profound. I highly suggest this one.

Sam Burkett’s journey is far from over. He may have served the country, but his mission is not yet complete. On a fine day of August 1945, many soldiers are returning home from the devastating WW 2 in Florence, Kentucky, and one of them is Sam, who was a lieutenant at that time deployed in Germany and almost killed by frostbite. Because of the severity of his condition, the doctor had decided to cut off one of his legs. His arms were almost amputated as well, and his face is unrecognizable due to the damage brought by the frostbite. Without anyone to lean on, he struggled to live in his hometown and be part of society again. But God isn’t ready to give up on Sam’s life yet. It’s just the beginning of his wonderful journey in life. He was surrounded by beautiful people. And one of the most beautiful changes in his life was when he met Rachel. Rachel was far from being physically good-looking, but they both needed each other.

Their story would melt your heart. You will be surprised at how great God’s love is. This book is excellent for people of all ages. Every scene is very interesting and engaging. It was such a joyful read.

A relatively not so long and not so short read with many excellent gems for the reader to help them on their journey in personal growth.

Life was becoming meaningless to Sam as he returned home from the devastating war where he was deployed as a soldier in Germany. It was a lucky escape that he survived the frostbite. However, most of his limbs were amputated. After returning home, he struggled to adjust to his new environment. But thanks to the goodness of the people he met along the way when he renewed his spirit, he tried to live life again. The bank manager became one of his closest friends. Albeit, whenever he hears the whistle of the train, for him, it symbolizes doom. But when he met Rachel, his life slowly changed.

As sure as the river that goes into the sea, this book is going to melt your heart away. The ending was very surprising. It was filled with optimism and joy. The hardships and trials that he faced are surely going to make you cry. Get ready for a box of tissue as you delve into the pages of this masterpiece.

The ingenuity and the creativity of the author from this book could really touch lives. Broad-ranging with a poignant, down-to-earth life story of Sam, there’s nothing I have for this book other than complete admiration. The author’s take on hope is on the next level. Every struggle in each scene, Joyce Crawford directly points it to God.

The story began in the year 1945 when the soldiers were returning to their respective hometowns to celebrate victory from the devastating World War II. Sam was one of these soldiers, but he had already gone through many months of healing due to his injuries. His hope in finding an ideal life partner had slowly turned into thin air. God knew his heart, and He sent these lovely angels to take care of Sam. His life changed far beyond what he could possibly imagine. Joyce Crawford showed us that we have by our side the one who is larger than our fears, bigger than our worries, and greater than our anxieties. I definitely recommend this book to everyone.

You wouldn’t imagine that an invalid soldier with a disfigured face would find love again in the most romantic and dramatic way, but in this book, he had. Their love story would surely have butterflies in your stomach. As each scene unfolds, the more they get interesting.

It was an unexpected meet-up. Sam, an invalid soldier who had returned home after the war, met Rachel in the most surprising moment. Rachel was running away from her husband due to the assaults. And then Sam came into the rescue. He offered everything he had to Rachel and invited her together with her two kids to live in his house in the meantime. That’s when Rachel’s heart moved. She knew Sam was a good person, and that’s the first time Rachel felt genuine care from a person.

The ending was surprising. Spoiler alert, Sam asked Rachel for marriage three times. And on the third time, she said yes. Find out how their story is molded by flipping the pages of this book. Surely, it’s going to be the best experience you’ll ever have.

The stories of Sam, Rachel, and Kayla are going to grip your heart. Sam, as a returnee soldier from WW2, tried to find his way again to live life. His life was twisted due to the injuries he got from the war. He was ready to give up living if not for these beautiful angels who were sent from above.

When he went home, there was no one to greet him because Sam was alone. His parents had died already. With no kids and wife, Sam thought his life was over. But with the goodness that he got from the people that surrounded him and the help of these beautiful angels, Sam became more and more positive Fone more time. And finally, when he met Rachel and her kids, he found new meaning in his life.

From the beginning to the end, this book is full of hope and optimism. The author had also generously sprinkled bible verses into every chapter, which made the book more interesting and uplifting. This book easily deserves five stars.

Honestly, I’m not a crier. But surely, this book has made me cry a river of tears. It’s touching and inspiring at the same time.

The life of Sam would take you to places where you would not expect. His life was a miracle. He shouldn’t have survived the war, but he did. However, his injury was beyond imagination. His left leg was amputated, his hands and face were disfigured. This story epitomized the greatness of God’s love. Upon returning home, his old pal, who worked in the bank, hardly recognized him. But, later on, he was surprised with a welcome party. Another couple met Sam and joined him for dinner and invited him to go to church. He was surrounded by good people, no matter how cruel life was. But the most beautiful thing that ever happened to his life was when he met Rachel. Rachel painted colors in Sam’s life.

Overall, I could say that I was satisfied with the reading. The beginning was interesting, and the ending was surprising.

A beautiful book to read about hope, faith, and courage. I must admit that this book has made me cry so hard after reading.

August 29, in the year 1945, was when it all began. Sam was one of the lucky few to survive WW2, where he served as a lieutenant in Germany. However, he was far from being whole. His limbs were amputated, and he could hardly walk if not for the healing which he attended for some time. Without people whom he calls family, he became hopeless as he rode the train down to his hometown in Florence, Kentucky. However, God isn’t ready to give up yet on Sam’s life. His quest to find happiness again nourished like a new plant. Thanks to these lovely angels who never left Sam in times of his hardships.

The twists and turns are surprising and unforgettable. The novel overall is phenomenal. If you are into Christian novels in hopes of finding these wonderful gifts of hope, faith, and courage, this book is one hundred percent for you.

Have you ever been so depressed in your life that you started giving up? If you do, then this book is perfect for you. The story of Sam is filled with hope and courage. It’s life-changing! A daily dose of this book would really lighten up your day.

The whistle of the train implies a negative connotation for Sam. Whenever he hears it, though it’s rare to hear the train’s whistle, he thinks it means something bad might happen. When Rachel was assaulted, Sam’s instinct had directed him to go home right away. And luckily, they found the culprit. But does it really mean that way? How can a train’s whistle change Sam’s life for good? These intriguing insights would surely capture the reader’s attention.

This book is profitable to people who have gone through tough times in life and want to find the ultimate freedom from suffering and fear by having a relationship with God through faith. I commend this book to everyone.

This is the story of Sam who came home from war. He was devastated to learn that he couldn’t walk due to the damage caused by the severe frostbite in Germany when he was deployed as a soldier. It was a joyous day for the American vets as they celebrated victory. But for Sam, it was one of the saddest life events he ever experienced. With no one to welcome him, he struggled to live life being alone. But his solitary moments were exchanged with a brighter future. He was surrounded by good people in their town. And thanks to the angels sent from above, they made the story more interesting and fun. I definitely recommend this book.

One of the best Christian novel books I’ve read by far. The Train by Joyce Crawford is going to question the existence and purpose of your life. Are you here to be served or to serve?

This book focused on the life of Sam Burkett. A soldier who almost died from frostbite. Thank goodness he survived with amputated arms and legs. His face was unrecognizable due to the damage brought by the frostbite from the war. Without parents, a wife, and kids, he struggled to live life upon returning home. But God isn’t ready to give up on Sam. He met Rachel, a wife and a mother who got physically and verbally abused by her late husband. Then love happened. It changed everything.

I must say that the story is a little intense. The ending is going to surprise you. And this book is going to open your heart about the importance of faith, joy, and love.

The story of Sam Burkett is going to melt your heart away. It’s one of the most touching and heartbreaking Christian novels I’ve read so far. After many months of healing, Sam is finally going home from World War 2. But his life was far from being normal. Most of his limbs were amputated, and his face was barely recognizable due to the damage caused by the frostbite when they were deployed in Germany. He was ready to give up life, but God wasn’t ready yet. The angels were very interesting and a lot of fun. They help Sam to face the trials and difficulties he’s facing.

I must admit that this book has gotten my interest. The lessons were life-changing. Everything in this book is well-suited to all people of all ages. This book is a simple reminder that whatever happens in life, God is in control.

Truly an amazing book to uplift your soul. Sam, an army of World War Two, got his life twisted after the critical injuries he got from the war. Now he struggles to live the pain in the past to face the uncertainties of the future. If not for Hope, Faith, Curiosity, and Serenity, Sam’s life would have been completely miserable. And then he met Rachel, who was also a victim of abuse. Both of their lives changed as they got to know each other more. With Sam helping Rachel, Rachel began to gain courage for himself. Not only Rachel but also the bank manager, Ken Fruman, and many more.

The story of Sam is surely uplifting and motivating. In addition, their love story would fill your stomach with butterflies. Clearly presented, this book introduces a train that would make your heart bleed or make it heal, you decide.

The Train is a story of choice. It’s choosing what makes you happy. This is a Christian novel that would leave a huge lesson in your life that you won’t forget till the end.

Whenever Sam hears the whistle of the train, he feels something bad is going to happen until he meets Rachel. As Sam was struggling to live life due to his poor physical condition from the fragments of war, so was Rachel as she struggled to survive from a brutal husband. Their two worlds met together in the most unexpected way. Just as when Sam was ready to give up romantic life, that’s when Rachel came up.

This book epitomized the power of love and acceptance. The scenes were so engaging and interesting to read, and the characters were all well developed. It easily has a five-star rating. Their struggles in life were also sure, from financing to intruder. All was worth reading.
