The event over a year in the making begins Fear State settles upon Gotham City, and no one is safe! Overwhelmed by the dual threat of the Scarecrow and Peacekeeper-01, Batman and his allies have been one step behind since the events of Infinite Frontier #0 and with the arrival of a mysterious anti-Oracle and the return of Poison Ivy, Batman might have more than he can handle!
Prior to his first professional work, Tynion was a student of Scott Snyder's at Sarah Lawrence College. A few years later, he worked as for Vertigo as Fables editor Shelly Bond's intern. In late 2011, with DC deciding to give Batman (written by Snyder) a back up feature, Tynion was brought in by request of Snyder to script the back ups he had plotted. Tynion would later do the same with the Batman Annual #1, which was also co-plotted by Snyder. Beginning in September 2012, with DC's 0 issue month for the New 52, Tynion will be writing Talon, with art by Guillem March. In early 2013 it was announced that he'd take over writing duties for Red Hood and the Outlaws in April.
Tynion is also currently one of the writers in a rotating team in the weekly Batman Eternal series.
Awesome start to the Fear State main story the setup had been shown before but now the main card begins.
This book starts with the consultation between Simon Saint and the Scarecrow. The the take over of the Magistrates, dispite Peacekeeper 01 being compromised. Oricle learn a lesson in misinformation. Harley is on a mission to find Ivy and help the refugees in her care, but this is not the whole Ivy. The war or Ally Town also begins.
A perfect recap/setup to a huge story. Is Gotham too far into the Fear State? Is the other side actually better? I can't wait yo find out.
Might be weird to say, as the art was nicely done, but the art (colours?) were really boring and made this a bit of a slog to read. Good art, just not fitting for this story (IMO)
Gorgeous art by Federici. The story was decent. There needs to be more Batman and less of everybody else. And none of this fake black Batman they keep pushing is needed. This racist substitution of white males they keep trying to force is sinking DC. But given this ongoing social justice direction, I can’t see following the story beyond this issue. I also wish DC would return entirely to slick paper. The art simply loses something on anything else.
This sets up where each main character (the actual page time of Batman is very limited) is at the beginning of Fear State before the event takes over their respective series. I liked it, very much in the continuity of the main Batman run. On the other hand there was no referrence to the events of the Detective Comics serie (no Ville, no Huntress, no Worth etc.) so I wonder how much Tamaki's story is really integrated (I found her run very slow and anti climatic at the end of the Ville arc...).
I think I will continue to read Batman and most of the ties-in.
great introduction to this event! i’m obsessed with scarecrows costume and this will definitely be an interesting read. not a big fan of the art for some of the characters though. i also wish there was more batman in this story cause it quickly felt convoluted with characters, but that’s kinda expected in comics.
This is a decent primer if you haven't read the included titles, but I particularly enjoyed Ivy's part. Ever since the end of Heroes in Crisis, Ivy's been in limbo, her presence hinted at and teased, but never developed. I would love to see Fear State end with a battle between Ivy and Crane.
This is the beginning of the many, many title Fear State crossover. I am impressed with all of the characters and plotlines that James Tycoon III. However, it is confusing where Gotham City is at this point.
2.5 stars. Art was decent and the story picked up near the end. I'll be finished with this soon 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 I wish I never started this boring run because now I have to finish it.
Why is this not included in the Fear State volume of Batman? One would think it’d be necessary. Whatever, something something Future State, everyone looks like a bad anime character now… let’s just get through this.
I haven't been reading Batman, but I did read the Future State saga, and wanted to see where it all started. It's a good primer. I look forward to more but might wait for the trade.
Finally something I can enjoy. You can really feel a genuine state of fear in the pages you're reading and imagining what's coming for Gotham and the vigilantes associated to the Bats.
