Derek “Crash” Wheeler never really wanted to make detective. He was a good marine and a great beat cop, but now he has to deal with cases like the one that just landed in his lap. Multiple deaths. Probably a serial killer. And if that isn't bad enough, now he has a crazy ex-profiler calling and texting, acting like he knows exactly what’s going on.

Matthew Herrera has more than one clue about Derek’s case. He worked on a serial murder case once that took everything away from him, and while the perpetrator went to jail, Matthew knows the case isn’t over. This murderer likes to play games, and he doesn’t work alone.

Racing against time, Derek and Matthew have to learn to work together to solve this case, and they find they have a chemistry they can’t deny, even if it feels selfish to indulge. People are dying out there, and it will take all their skills to work out this puzzle before it’s too late, or before one of them becomes the next victim.

JODI spent too many years in New York and San Francisco stage managing classical plays, edgy fringe work, and the occasional musical. They are characters you can’t help but fall in love with while they stumble along the path to their happily ever after.

For those looking to get on her good side, Jodi’s addictions include nonfat lattes, Malbec and tequila however you pour it. She’s also obsessed with Shakespeare and Broadway musicals. She can be found wearing sock monkey gloves while typing when it’s cold, and on the beach enjoying the sun and the ocean when it’s hot. When she’s not writing and/or vacuuming sand out of her laptop, Jodi mentors queer youth and will drop everything for live music. I'm not sure. The beginning felt off, like things had happened before the beginning that we should know about before hand and that kept me feeling off for the rest of the book. At least the mystery part was well thought out and interesting.

this was interesting, kept me curious and wondering. i was amazed by Matt's intelligence.

starting this though, i felt a little lost, like i was reading the second book in a series instead. everything was revealed later on. the first part of the connection finally connected, and it was great.

the romance felt abit fast paced, for someone who had holed himself up for a decade?, didn't like being surrounded by people or even touched, and a heavy guilt burden on his shoulder. BUT it was satisfying. Derek taking care of Matt, and Matt falling apart and feeling safe with him, was so sweet. i love their plans together, even though they aren't sure of anything, but it was something for them both to hold on to.

the mystery was good, but at the end, it felt short. it was less than what i expected.

i have so many questions for the ending,

since this is a series, i hope it will be the same couple and it will pick up from where it was left off.

Jodi Payne and BA Tortuga's new book,Cryptic (Puzzles Book 1) is a New York City murder mystery. Detective Derek “Crash” Wheeler has caught the case, but when a disgraced former profiler won't stop calling and emailing him, he breaks down and answers the phone.

Dr. Matthew Herrera is safely tucked away in his New Mexico home, where he has avoided the world since a serial killer murdered his husband. Herrera was a criminal profiler who sought out and caught Rick Adonai, but lost so much in the process.

Now, Herrera is seeing the same pattern of murders in a new string of killings taking place in New York City. But how can Adonai be behind the killings when he's locked away in a Super Max?

The basic story centers on the relationship that develops between Herrera and Wheeler. Personally, I felt the relationship part of this story was rushed and didn't ring true to me. I just don't see a NYPD Police Detective throwing his career away to have sex with a consultant he just met. Since this was the first book in what looks to be a series, I wish the authors would have gone with a slow burn that could have heated over several novels instead of rushing right into sex. I also found the sex scenes impeding the plot. There's a serial killer on the loose and he may try to murder one or both of us, let's stop everything and have sex in the conference room at the precinct. I just didn't buy this. I know that I have to suspend belief when reading, but things should still be logical within the confines of the story. I just don't see Crash as the type of detective who would throw it all away on a guy he just met. If he is, then he probably has other issues that are not rising to the surface in this story.

As for the characters, I really liked both Crash and Matthew. I think they make an interesting pair. I felt Matthew came off as a little more "wounded bird needing saving" than I would have liked. Also, Matthew is clearly agoraphobic at the beginning of the book, and it seems to magically disappear. I wish the authors had delved more into what life is really like for agoraphobics. I just don't think the portrayal here does justice to a serious mental illness.

So, overall, I enjoyed this book. Do I think the book has some flaws? Yes. I also wish there was a bit more realism about New York City within the story. Although they used NYC as a backdrop, I didn't think they used it very well. Also, there didn't seem to be a lot of understanding of police procedural within this book.

I want to thank the authors/publisher for the opportunity to read this book before publication. I definitely think this book has a place in the literary landscape. While I am thankful to the authors/publisher, the reviews expressed in my review are mine and not influenced by their generosity.

2.5 stars. Short and almost a dnf. Feels like there’s a prequel in there somewhere. Heavy on the murder mystery but no answers as of yet. The relationship went from zero to a hundred pretty quick and I couldn’t connect with the characters.

I enjoyed parts of this one but honestly I wanted to and expected to like it more.

I liked the overall storyline, I love the battle of the minds with the profiler versus the serial killer, throw in the history between the two and it added to the overall storyline.

The only issue was the execution. The book started at mid story, a couple of murders down, so the first couple of chapters were quite confusing as I navigated what was happening. It felt like I was missing either chapters or a complete previous book. We had Matt having conversations with Ben and it took a while to understand what was happening there as well. Once I got my head around it and understood the players I enjoyed it more.

The middle of the book was the best, as we watched them chase down the clues and try and find the killer. The ending needed more work. While there are no cliff hangers - there also are a lot of unanswered questions about what happened. I see this is book 1 so I'd hope this is discussed in the next book.

I really like Matt and Derek together, I did think that it they progressed rather quickly, we went from checking each other out to bam together. It didn't feel organic but I just went with it. I loved how Derek early on understood that Matt was struggling and needed help, so he took him under his wing and made sure he took breaks and looked after himself a bit.

I'd read the next one as I want to know what happens to Jack

Matthew’s life had been destroyed by a serial killer. When the impossible happens and the killer strikes again, Matt has no choice but to help the police. Derek knows he’s working on a incredibly complex case and can’t do it without Matty’s help. In the midst of trying to find a psycho they are drawn to each other and can’t fight the powerful attraction.

A bad guy we don’t meet is more of a specter than a reality. The bad guy we do meet is actually kind of disappointing.

Interesting take on a serial killer. However, the developing relationship between Matty and Derek felt like the real story here. It ended not really with a cliffhanger but with a there is more to come possibility. I certainly hope that is the case.

It is a nice start..

I liked the mystery. The whole serial killer thing was thrilling and exciting. However, the personalities and previous events might have been explained better. I get keeping up the suspense, but I am still not sure if Matt is insane and seeing spirits or what. The end resolution also felt a bit rushed and abrupt. I would have liked to know if the injured character recovers, and what is actually happening in Matt's head explained in full sentences not just in a couple disjointed words. I mean it is great that they understand each other from one word or two, but I am not sure I do. So yeah. I liked it, but it could have been a bit..more.

ARC received for an honest review.
Derek Wheeler is a retired Marine that has recently made detective. He's investigating a string of murders that are tied together. When he starts getting texts and emails from a profiler he ignores them at first but then he realizes he's over his head and needs all the help he can get. Dr Matthew Herrera is a profiler that worked on a high profile serial killer case ten years ago. He knew then that it wasn't over but he's not ready to get mixed up in this case as he would have to leave his home. When Derek doesn't take no for an answer Matt caves and comes back to New York to help.

This book could've easily been a five star book but the execution wasn't quite there IMO. I felt like there was a previous book or a prequel that I missed because the book starts off with all this info that we're supposed to already know. I felt lost until about the 35% mark when the authors started giving us the info we needed up front. Then the book does sort of leave a cliffhanger because Matt is convinced there are two people they are looking for but when one is caught the book just abruptly ends. No further mention of the other person that was helping in the original murders. Once Derek and Matt start working together I did feel like they had good chemistry. I will read any following books so I can get the answer to person number two.

This was a fun, murder mystery thriller with a MM romance thrown in. It can be confusing sometimes especially in the beginning because it almost feels like we are missing information but I still really enjoyed the story and I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

I’m going with 3.5 stars here but rounding to 4 stars.
I loved the idea of the book, totally my type of thing- cryptic puzzles and Murder? Yes please.
The first few chapters I was a bit lost and kept having to re-read paragraphs. I couldn’t work out who was actually speaking at times. It read more like a draft than a finished work.
Also I felt the romance came a bit out of nowhere. There was no real chemistry and then they are all over each other? Just seemed a bit placed.
Then at the end of the book it crested to a pretty good climax but then I turned the page and it was the end….where is the rest of the book?. So many unanswered questions. What about Jack? Who was the accomplice and how was he really connected? What about the serial killer - a final comment to him perhaps?
100 more pages, a bit of editing and this could have blown me away.
I received a copy of this book via GRR and am leaving a review voluntarily.

I think this is the first book I've read by this pair that didn't involve a cowboy or a Texan. That's not a criticism, mind you, just an observation.

The story took a bit to get going for me, but once it did, I was all in. I love a good whodunnit, and Cryptic ratchets up the tension until the end while building the relationship between the two MCs.

I enjoyed the story, though I really could do without knowing in such great detail what the characters eat at every single meal. Sometimes the detailed attention given to food and beverage distracts from the plot, in my opinion, but it's still a sweet, hot romance built into an interesting, exciting murder mystery.

OK, there are elements to Cryptic that I really like and some that I don't get along with all that well.

Likes: MCs! I really engaged with the Derek and Matt (I'm sorry, I'm *that* reader who refuses to call them Crash/Matt - major eye roll from me there!). I'm a sucker for a detective, and one who's also former military with emotional baggage and doubts about his ability to solve the case, but has a protective/nurturing streak a mile wide? I'm there! As for Matt, he's a profiler with a brilliant mind but is troubled still after a previous entanglement with a serial killer changed his life in a bad way. He's dedicated to helping to the detriment of his own health which garnered a lot of empathy from me. These two men could be absolutely perfect for each other for my money.

I also like the premise of the case. A decent serial killer plot is definitely going to make it on my TBR. This is where some of my 'dislikes' start creeping in, though. Although the premise is great, there are aspects that aren't addressed sufficiently for me (no spoilers here, though). It's possible that there might be an overarching plot spanning multiple books in the series but, if that's the case, the cliffhanger is a bit lackluster - there's no real OMG moment.

The other thing that doesn't really work for me is the pacing of personal/relationship developments don't flow with the pacing of the investigation. I don't think (even in a work of fiction) that a seemingly agoraphobic character would lose their inability to leave the home quite as easily as the case seemed here. It's the same for the speed with which the MCs jump into bed. Insta-attraction, I get but the backgrounds of both men just don't lend themselves to the guys going for it straight away. It would've made more sense to me for the relationship to develop more slowly, in line with the plot unfolding (over subsequent books if necessary). Actually, the sex scenes actively take away from the investigation in some instances. I'm a big fan of this author duo so it's possible that I'm holding them to an unfairly high standard, so I honestly expected more from them?!

On balance, despite some areas where I think things could have gone differently, I'm invested enough that I want to know what happens next for Matt and Derek (at least I hope this isn't it for them) and I hope that there'll be more than meets the eye with the overall case. I'll add the next Puzzles series book to my TBR. 3*

Just getting started: It's investigators and profilers and serial killers, oh my! I'm only about a quarter of the way in, but it's so fascinating. There is something going on with the profiler, and I think I know what, but it hasn't been confirmed yet so I'll have to wait and see.

Finished: As the series title suggests, the clues were all part of a larger puzzle, however they were not doled out in a (commonly convenient) straight line for the characters (and the reader) to put together. They felt more random than that. Derek and Matt were able to deduce meaning and break codes because of their professional training and Matt's experience with the serial killer, but I as the reader was just along for the ride. This was both a refreshing change and a bit frustrating. I like to see the process as each clue is being solved, so only hearing the results after the fact separated me from a lot of what was going on for the case side of things.

On the romance side, Derek and Matt made sense. In a lot of ways, I think this first book in the series was meant to set up a serial killer villain, not solve the serial killings. I think the purpose of this book was to establish conditions for our main characters to bond so tightly that they would literally protect each other with their lives, and I think that was super successful.

After reading many of the reviews, I see that the common thought is that it felt like there should have been a book prior to this one. I would have been fine if there was, but I don't necessarily agree that there should have been. I'm fine with where the story starts out. I actually like that one of the characters had a prior connection to the serial killer and that we don't know all the details yet. My guess is that more on-page puzzle solving would have eliminated any question about where this series started.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and found it hard to put down. But I found a couple distractions — that a character (Matt) would accept a beer (to help him sleep) when he’s been in rehab for alcohol abuse; that a reclusive man with social anxiety would give in as easily as Matt did and agree to leave his fortress in New Mexico for New York City; and a couple loose ends in the mystery which I’m assuming will be addressed later in the Puzzles series. There was also the reasons Matt’s hair was important to him, that Derek vowed to ask and didn’t — not plot-changing points by any stretch, but an intrusion of the flow.

Other than those little things, I liked the storytelling and the character development of both Matt and Derek, although Derek could have been fleshed out a bit more, as it pertains to motivations and the little details that make a character seem real (why did he have the special hairbursh, for example? Why wasn’t he freaked out that the serial killer figured out where he lived?). The authors tried to build some background for him, for example examining his reasons for becoming a detective, but that could have been expanded on — you don’t make a major career change like that just because other people think you’d be good at it. What else is driving him?

The wonderful thing about ongoing series’ like this is, while the story may seem to be wrapped up in a bow, these types of things can develop further in the series and I hope the authors take advantage of that opportunity. I feel like if my questions were answered, I’d be a lot more full-on enthusiastic about this book.

Nevertheless, the insta-love sparks between these men, and the surrounding mystery/suspense make it a good read.

I don't know about this book. The story was a good one, but I felt that there was a lot left out in the execution of the story and the writing.

We have Derek, a former Marine turned cop, who is assigned to a serial killer case. Soon, he connects this case to a case 10 years ago. The profiler in this case, Dr. Matthew Harrera, approaches Derek and together they try to find the killer.

I don't know how I should rate this book. On one hand, I like the plot: Serial Killer returns, mystery, suspense and two amazing characters.
But the story felt rushed, there were a lot of logic holes, and it was sloppily researched to the point that I could not take it seriously anymore.
Full disclosure: I just finished a book that was amazingly written and where the author researched the Afghanistan conflict after 9/11 and has written an astonishing accurate MM fiction. So every book that I would have read directly after this one would have felt a little bit flat.
But still, in Cryptic, there were too many logic holes. There is a serial killer free and the unit that wants to find him consists of 5 policemen? They didn't even have a techy to track down a phone, from where the suspects calls several times?
The story did not just add up.
Yes, there will be other books, that may clear up some things, but I am not sure if I will read them. The whole police procedure was just too sloppy written and too unrealistic for my opinion.

Normally, I would give 2 stars, but as I just came from a book that is hard to follow, I will give 2,5 stars.

I’ve loved everything I’ve read by this pair of authors, so I knew I had to check out their newest foray into the romantic thriller genre. Though none of the characters is a Texan former rodeo cowboy, their combined voice shines through the intriguing combination of Derek, NYC detective, and Matthew, a profiler from New Mexico with a painful past.

That painful past drags Matthew back to New York City to track a copycat serial killer, even though it evokes so many memories of how his lover was murdered before he retreated into solitude. At first, Derek needs Matthew’s intelligence and familiarity with the past case because Derek has trouble trusting his own instincts as a detective. Though there is an element of forced proximity to how these men eventually come together, it becomes obvious that Derek really needs all of Matthew fairly quickly.

Though these authors have plenty of experience working together, this book is a departure from their previous projects, so I was okay with a bit of first book bumpiness to this new series. I think a few slower beats could have been implemented to halt the breakneck pace I felt sped me through the book without a moment to breathe, despite the race against time to catch a killer. And while part of me wishes I’d learned more about Matthew, I get the impression that this series will be about solving the puzzle of this character as much as it is about solving other mysteries.

I think this series has a ton of potential, and I look forward to watching these characters develop a real relationship out of the trauma bond established in this story. I have no idea where the metaplot is leading, but I’m more than happy to follow along.

A novice detective and a paranode profiler.
A cryptic msg from a copycat killer of lifer Rick Adonai who leaves gruesome evidence of his work. Det. Derek Wheeler, ex-marine, ex-smoker, and the newbie detective who also happens to be out of the closet. Talk about 3 strikes and you're almost out. But Derek must prove himself to his dept and catching this horrendous killer is his only goal. But then comes the perplexing calls from Matt Herrera who had followed Adonai's trail from the last six years, six years totaling nine victims for which Adonai had been sentenced to life in prison. Now there was an accomplice. Calls to Derek telling him secrets that as a profiler Matt had amassed. A look into Matt's mind reveals the torment he's in because his mind hears his dead lover (Ben) consoling him and encouraging him to continue searching and not to give up. This was an interesting aspect of this story. Now there was a predicted six-day span before the next victim. And there is a race to end this. The costs are high, and no one is left unscathed by this madman.
All the characters in this story are complex personalities, from fellow detective empathic Leslie to feisty sarcastic Jack, Matt's assistant Mari. Amid all these circumstances the allure of attraction comes at such an inopportune time, but it is what it is and both men need each other so much. I really enjoyed this story and look forward to the next in this series. This is my willing review for the ARC I received via GRR.

I'm leaning more towards 3.5 stars for this one. Here's the thing, I love the overall idea of the book. It gave me The Mentalist vibes, as well as Criminal Minds. I LOVE stuff like that! So, I was completely into that aspect of the book, but found myself lost and confused at times. There were sentences that didn't quite make sense. And, maybe I misunderstood this part, but Matt says he doesn't have a bed, then later he says he has a king size. The latter part of that, plus the rest of that conversation, really didn't fit with what we've been told. I'm left with so many questions, which will hopefully be answered in a book two. I say that with a bit of uncertainty, because everything related to the case seemed to just stop. Derek literally says "It's over now though. Maybe we can sleep in tomorrow." It is not over! What about Adonai? Who the heck is the bald guy? So, I assume since there's things left unanswered, there will be a continuation of this storyline, just wish the authors would have been a bit more clear there. My final thoughts, the relationship that's building between Derek and Matt is sweet. They are good for one another, and share a connection worthy of envy. Matt is so very deserving of someone to love, protect, and all around care for him. He's been through so much pain and torment. Derek makes a great partner, both professionally and personally, for Matt in my opinion. Which means that I'm on board for getting more of them, and this case.

Cryptic is a serial killer mystery that brings together NYPD homicide detective, Derek Wheeler, and ex profiler, Matthew Herrera.
Three murders have come across Derek's desk with no links but they know its the same killer. Matthew comes in from ten years away from the job with information saying it links to the case that took everything from him.
I really enjoyed the mystery and investigation part of this story. It keeps you thinking and on your toes with no clear signs as to who is involved except the original serial killer. Links and clues for Matthew drive up the tension and brings things to a head toward the end of the story.
I wasn't too sure on the relationship aspect. For me, attraction and emotions seemed to come from out of the blue, developing quickly and felt a little like they were trying to fit in with the plot, rather than both flow together. I really enjoyed both MC's. My heart went out to Matty and what he's been through. It's good that Derek becomes so protective of him and the two spending time together does build that sense of closeness. I'm hoping that they can build on what they've got so far and I'm interested to find out more about the serial killer as there's no way that story line is over yet.
A good story overall. I loved the plot and the characters, it just took me a moment to get with their relationship.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

3.5 rounded to 4. I have mixed feelings about Cryptic. This is a new genre for Payne and Tortuga, and it has a similar style to their other books, but I’m not sure if that style is well-suited for a romantic crime thriller. Derek is an ex-Marine who’s in his first year as a detective when he catches a case that feels like the work of a serial killer. Matthew Herrera is a former profiler who becomes a recluse after the death of his lover at the hands of Rick Adonai, a serial killer who left puzzles as clues. There are similarities to the cases, so Matthew reaches out to Derek to offer his help in catching the current killer. Is it a copycat or someone working with Adonai? Tortuga and Payne have a meandering style that isn’t quite sharp enough for a crime thriller. There are a lot of details about the crimes, but it doesn’t have the sense of urgency often found in other romantic suspense novels. Matt and Derek go from adversaries to lovers really quickly. There’s no real buildup to their relationship. There are a lot of unanswered questions with the ending, so I hope this is intentional and a way to continue the series. It’s an intriguing concept, and I hope the next book gives the series more dimension.

I'm so conflicted about this book. It ticks all of my boxes - good mystery, serial killer on the loose, hot and interesting MC's... The writing is good and the story flows almost seamlessly, as usual when this authors are concerned. I like the main characters - Matthew Herrera just breaks my heart, because what he's been through is unimaginable. Actually it kept me up almost all night, because I was desperate to find out how the mystery will unravel. What I had a problem with was the execution of a great premise. There were some inconsistencies that were pulling me out of the story, time frames were often off. The liberties that authors took with the police procedures were questionable at best and sometimes illogical. And there is no such thing as a recovered alcoholic - so no - he can't have a beer or two. I'm a very meticulous reader so I always notice such mistakes. Not to mention that half of the time you don't know who's talking and you have to go back to figure it out. The ending was HFN and kind of abrupt. It left many opened questions but I'm hoping they will be answered in the next book or books. Despite my reservations I enjoyed this book and I'm looking forward to read the next one.

I loved this first book in a new series. It’s a wonderful mix of mystery, tension, romance, and a nasty serial killer with his eye on one of the MCs. I liked how personal the race to find the bad guy was, and how all the clues came together. I’m already looking forward to the next book as it feels that, although this part of the puzzle is finished, Derek and Matt’s fight against the person behind everything is far from over.

The story hooked me in immediately. I thought using puzzles as a plot point was very clever, and I liked how Matt was able to use them to figure out the bad guy’s next move. Poor Matt! I liked how the authors didn’t pull any punches in showing how much he’s been through. I also liked how Ben is still very much a part of this story and Matt’s life. I kept wondering how much more Matt will lose before this series is done. I thought the authors did a great job in showing how scarred he is.

I liked Derek, and the chemistry between him and Matt. They’re what the other needs, and I liked how protective they already are of each other. I’m seriously worried that Derek is now a target, and kept second guessing what could go wrong as I was reading.

The tension is palpable throughout and keeps rising. Nicely done!

I hope we won’t have to wait too long to find out what happens next.

Derek has no patience for Matt before they meet-- he’s trying to solve serial killings and Matt’s rambling emails don’t seem helpful, until, of course they do. When they do meet, everything changes: the case takes off, as does their chemistry. I think, as a premise for a romance, this had potential: there’s adrenaline and stress aplenty, and it bonds the two of them together super quickly. I liked their dynamic: Derek is nurturing, Matt is clever, both are dedicated to what they are trying to do. The actual mystery itself I was less sold on, but that might be because so much of the way we experience it as readers is through the lens of the toll it’s taking on Matt and Derek-- there’s a lot of anxiety and pain (which makes sense, as gruesome serial killings) and each “breakthrough” in the case comes at a high cost. There’s an emphasis on the idea of puzzle solving, but the actual process is more reactive than deductive. Still, events move quickly, which makes for an engrossing read. I thought the ending came rather abruptly, and if this were a standalone, I’d say it felt rushed, but as the prelude to another installment of the case, and romance, it makes sense as a stopping point.

Derek “Crash” Wheeler is not sure he should be a detective. While he did great as a Marine and a beat cop, now he has to handle cases like the one he just got which is a serial killer. He feels like he may be in over his head. Matthew Herrera has been emailing him claiming he has information. This killer has the same methods as the one that took everything away from him. He finally gets Crash to listen and he reluctantly agrees to come and help solve the puzzles the killer likes to leave. Crash and Matthew find themselves attracted but acting on it while people are dying seems just wrong. It is a race to see who will win – a race they know they must win.

Cryptic is a fast-paced, action-packed story. Crash knew he had to find the killer but his training as a Marine was no help. Matthew felt compelled to help even though he had lost everything the last time. The two men had desire for each other but also felt guilty because they should be stopping the killing instead. In many ways they made an unlikely match but it worked for them. It is the first in a series called Puzzles. The puzzles they solved in this one were intriguing and very interesting. With more to come, the rest of this series will be anxiously anticipated.

I really enjoyed this story. Putting these two guys together took talent. Neither are looking to get involved. Derek, while quite qualified for his job, feels he is not meant to be more than a beat cop. He feels he is way over his head trying to figure out this killing spree. On top of that he keeps getting bothered by an ex-profiler.
Matt, the ex-profiler, keeps trying to get a hold of Derek since he has first hand knowledge about a serial killer with characteristic such as is Derek’s case but Derek isn’t answering his phone calls nor texts.
Since this is the first in the series, I’m guessing my unanswered questions will carry on through the series. I enjoyed the story but feel this is sort of a cliffhanger. I know where these two are headed for now. I don’t know quite a few things about the killer and Jack. I wish the authors had said if this is an ongoing thing with these characters or not. I guess I don’t know the author’s intention for this series. It should have been a five star review but I had to take off because of the unknown. Thanks to GRR I was able to find this series.

I did not know what to expect when I started this book and it blew me away in the BEST way.

Matt is a man who lives in solitude after suffering an unimaginable loss. He lives in a fortress with one employee/friend and family who loves him from afar. Derek is a newly promoted detective suffering from imposter syndrome, trying to catch a serial killer. He loathes Matt from Day 1 due to Matt's instability and caginess - but he also needs him to catch this killer.

This story moved super fast - the chemistry was real and steamy and heartfelt. I loved both these men - but Matt pulled at my heartstrings. I couldn't put this book down!

There were a few things I wasn't as fond of - there were a few inconsistencies, not quite enough character development for me and the end came really abruptly. I wanted like 50 more pages in this book to flesh out the characters, their personalities and the resolution of the mystery. But honestly none of these detracted from my overall enjoyment and hope that we see Matt and Derek again soon!

This is an interesting start to a new series but unfortunately it is only an okay read for me. The characters are quirky and intriguing but I found it difficult to follow the story at times as it felt like it started in the middle of the storyline and I was trying to catch up for the first half of the book. There are also so many unanswered questions that the story felt unfinished to me but hopefully this will be dealt with as the series continues. I really like Matthew and the fact that he is willing to help Derek is amazing after the tragedy in his past. Derek is definitely in over his head with this investigation and it seemed a bit weird that there weren't a lot more cops working on this case. I love how protective and caring Derek is with Matthew but their relationship happens so quickly that they really don't have a chance to get to know each other and I didn't really see a true connection between them. The abrupt ending and lack of any closure with the investigation were disappointing but I hope that the next book will provide some answers.

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.

I was given a free arc copy from the author and the GRR arc team for review.

I really enjoyed this quick, fast paced, angsty, suspenseful and steamy murder mystery story. It drew me in right away from the start and kept my attention the whole time. I could not put it down. I enjoyed both of the characters and thought they had good chemisty under the circumstances. The story allowed for a realistic slow burn. I found the mystery plot interesting and what was included was well written.

I left off a star cause I would have liked the ending to wrap up a little slower. It left me with some unanswered questions. Also, I wanted to see more into the relationship, even just a fast forward epilogue. At this point I'm giving the authors the benefit of the doubt and I'm still rating it fairly high cause I'm hoping the second book will give these answers. This is only the first book in the Puzzles series and I think it was a great start to the series.
