The First Rule

Rate this book
Darcy.

Being left at the altar wasn’t part of my plan.
Neither was my ex-fiancé’s twin brother offering to be my sperm donor.
I could have said no. I should have said no. But that’s the thing with hindsight… once you’ve got it; it’s too late to take anything back.

Ryan.

The situation was complicated, but the rules were simple.

Rule number one: No catching feelings.
Rule number two: We do this one time and one time only.
Rule number three: This is our little secret.

We made a hasty agreement fuelled by heartbreak and liquor, but it turned out to be so much more.

Darcy Shearer isn’t the same woman I laid eyes on five years ago – everything has changed since that night... except the way I feel about her.

I gave her my word, but now I’m taking her heart. She forgot the most important rule… that they’re all made to be broken.

The First Rule is a standalone, full length novel with no cliff-hanger.

The Right Twin

A wonderful book filled with heartbreak and warmth, love and ego. There is also fantastic tension and release. 🔥🔥💜🔥🔥 I very much enjoyed this novel.

“Why are you here, Ryan? You don’t even like me.”

She’s not wrong. I don’t
like her. I love her.
--Ryan Steele

Ryan has loved Darcy since the night he met her so many years earlier but a case of mistaken identity had left her in the arms of his twin brother. When that blows up, he seizes an opportunity with his dream girl... in epic fashion!

Even with more than two hundred pages, the book reads easily. I couldn't put it down, staying up late to finish it.

I appreciated that there were appropriate time jumps, giving space between events and keeping a realistic timeline. Unfortunately, the timeline wasn't the only thing that was kept realistic. So were the narcissistic tendencies of some people. It was good from a book perspective but it stinks that there really are people like that (and worse) in the world.

There are some twists that had crossed my mind but I didn't think they would happen so when they showed up, I was floored! I'm not sure if I'm awed by the fact that Nicole S. Goodin and I are on the same wavelength or concerned, deeply concerned. No matter, it makes for an exciting read!

Another thing that I really liked are the friends on both sides of the Ryan-Darcy equation. They kick bootie! Girl power is in full force!

I can't wait to see what Nicole writes next! I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

2.5/5 ⭐

The first half of the book was really refreshing and it totally had me engrossed. I immediately loved Ryan. His love for Darcy was so deep that he was ready to do anything for her. Everything was going smoothly with some cute moments thrown in but the since moment Ryan's twin Jacob's pov was introduced (which I felt was unnecessary) the book went downhill real quick. The twin was just a horrible person (he just got worse and worse as the book progressed) on top of that, Darcy made some really stupid decisions that annoyed me and I started skimming a lot. I just lost interest and did not care about the characters at all because I couldn't connect with them anymore.

For the most part, I loved Darcy and Ryan. Their story was sweet yet steamy and I enjoyed seeing their relationship progress. The story became slightly crazy and predictable towards the middle, with the appearance of Ryan's twin, Jacob, and I found myself skimming the pages until the drama was over.
It definitely wasn't my favourite of Nicole's books, but I'm still glad I decided to go ahead and read it.

This was a good read. Darcy is left on her wedding day. Her ex's twin brother is there to help her pick up the pieces. However, there is more to their relationship. Unfortunately, someone from their life shows up and makes things difficult. Luckily it gets taken care of and they get their happy ending.

My first book by this author, but not the last. Her characters are vibrant, and the story is unique and hard to put down. The secondary characters are beautifully written, and I still want to know more about them.

I love how the information came to us in pieces, some current, some flashback. Then, as the layers unfold, we begin to see how opposite Jacob and his twin are.

Jacob, the evil twin, leaves Darcy at the altar after five years of dating, and this is just the beginning. By the end, his list of wrongdoings is long. Ryan, the good twin, and her friends are left picking up the pieces Jacob has left behind.

As the story progresses, my appreciation for the author's writing grows. I am wholly invested in the drama, conflicts, characters, and how this story will end. I recommend this book, and I will be reading more by this author!

Thank you to Booksprout and the Author for the advanced copy; this is my voluntary review.

The first rule of a good romance book is to ensure it grabs hold of your heart immediately and Ryan and Darcy’s story does exactly that. A story of intense connections, heartbreak, secrets and revelations. Darcy has had her world turned upside down but when Ryan wants to make it right by giving her the one thing she craves, rules are needed but what happens when they were already broken before they were even written. Their story is passionate, captivating, heart wrenching, angsty and soul-stirring. The love that radiates between these two can be felt soul deep from the words that radiate deep under your skin. Ryan will steal your heart and at times leave you breathless as he finally gets the one thing he has been missing for five years. Their story is full of surprises and is overflowing with love. An absolute impassioned love story that has you wishing for more time with this couple.

I’ve been following this author for quite some time, but now is the first time that I’ve taken the chance and dived in to reading her work and after picking up this book I have to say that I’m quite impressed with what I read.
It’s clear that Nicole S. Goodin is a talented writer and that she has an amazing imagination as from the minute I started reading this book, I was hooked and just couldn’t put it down.
I loved everything about Darcy and Ryan, it’s clear that they were the sweetest characters and I hate how Ryan was in pain for so long. It’s clear that he’s in love with Darcy and that he’s willing to do anything he can to make her happy, even if it means that being hurt in the process.
You could literally feel everything that both of these characters were feeling and at times it was really emotional. I honestly think that Nicole did a great job at telling their story and you honestly can’t help but fall in love with the characters.
The only thing that was missing from this book is that it would have been nice to have known why Jacob did what he did, why he left Darcy at the alter and what was his motive because whilst they had a five-year relationship it’s clear he had thought carefully about what he was doing and just knowing how and what he planned on doing would have been great.
Other than that, I loved every minute and I know for a fact that I’ll be reading more of Nicole’s work because this one was just incredible, so it’ll be interesting to see how her others turn out.
But I do honestly recommend giving this book a try because it’s got all the feels, everything you could ever ask for in a book and the chemistry is off the charts.

The last thing Darcy expected was to be left at the altar, she thought that everything was going perfect in her life until minutes before she was due to marry the love of her life…
The last thing she expected was for Ryan to walk back into her life, as things changed drastically with him and his brother, so it’s not like Darcy has any clue what’s been happening with him or why he’s turned up now.
However, knowing that he’s not one to give up so easily, she lets him in, and they end up having a huge heart to heart along with Darcy letting out her emotions over what Jacob did, but with them both drinking and her quite drunk Ryan offers her something that she never expected.
Being a mother is what Darcy has always wanted, with not having any family left, the only people she has are her two best friends. So, when Ryan proposes that he helps her have a baby, she can’t believe her ears. She knows in a way it’s wrong to go ahead with Ryan’s offer considering his brother just left her at the altar, but she can’t help but go along with it because she’s hurting but also wants to just let go for once. But there’s rules in place, but will they be able to follow them??? What will happen the morning after, will Darcy regret spending the night with Ryan???

LOVED this story!

I consumed this story in one sitting. I was completely riveted to my seat and hoping so badly that everything was going to turn out happy in the end. Adulting was done for the day and there was no way I was putting it down.

This story was so emotional at times that I found my heart aching badly and I caught myself wanting to scream and shout at some of the events taking place. Some of these characters had my blood boiling like crazy and I just wanted to reach in and smack a few people!

Darcy and Ryan have this beautiful connection that turns into something neither one of them can deny. Their second chance romance is filled to the brim with emotional turmoil, passion, drama and undeniable love. They take us on an emotional rollercoaster ride that will have you laughing, crying and gushing with love.

This is an extremely well written story that is filled with unbelievable emotions, suspense and twists that will keep you captivated, enthralled and highly entertained.

I absolutely loved it and can’t wait to read what this amazing author writes next.

To the moon and all the stars
This book is about Darcy and Ryan. She’s been dumped on her wedding day, by Jacob, the man she thought she was going to spend the rest of her life with. Her friends Freya and Steph are trying to console and support her but she just wants to be left alone! She’s understandably mortified, humiliated and heartbroken. However, when Jacob’s twin brother Ryan’s knocks on her door and pleads for her to let him in, she relents.
Ryan is easy to talk to, and he allows, actually encourages her, to let it all out. And she does. Ryan is kind, honest and supportive – to the point of admitting his brother is an idiot for letting her go. And Darcy has no idea how Ryan feels about her. After lots of talking, some screaming, lots of tears, and lots of drinking – before and after her little nap – Ryan makes her an offer neither of them can believe! So they negotiate a contract of sorts, with some rules. She was scared of ‘feeling’, but it was way too late for him already! And when they first kiss… oh my!!!
Darcy has regrets the next day and pretty much sends Ryan on his way. He’s understandably hurt and confused, but does as she wishes. There’s no contact for a couple of months afterwards, when she’s convinced by her two best friends to go and see him, and tell him her news. While she’s nervous about seeing him, their connection is still incredibly strong, and Ryan is excited and takes charge of the situation a little. With their feelings the way they are, she’s happy to have him supporting her, and genuinely being there for her, with her.
But, of course, drama looms as the narcissistic Jacob (perfectly portrayed by the media as the ‘C of the Year’) and his cunning and awful father make a deal that has Darcy leaving Ryan, against her will. There’s a lot of angst, anxiety and concern about the entire situation from everyone concerned. My heart was breaking for Darcy and Ryan as they endured the deceit from his own family. In order to protect those she loves, Darcy made a deal with the devil, and was absolutely miserable and helpless to do anything about it. But other suspicions, investigations and surprises gave Ryan the opportunity and ammunition to swoop in and spoil his brother’s disgusting plans – though this wasn’t without its own doubts and dramas.
There were a lot of mixed emotions, with plenty of drama, humour, deceit, heart-break, secrecy, forgiveness, great friendships, romance, love and steamy passion. I loved the flashbacks, giving context to some of their feelings and interactions. He couldn’t just sit by and watch his brother live happily ever after with the woman of his dreams when he knew he didn’t deserve her. He was such an honourable and down-to-earth person, making him the polar opposite of his twin brother, and the perfect match for Darcy.
I didn’t want this story to end, so I was disappointed it finished so soon. I was hoping for more, because I loved the characters and their storylines so much! I was also waiting for, and hoping that Ryan might show and explain his tattoo. And seriously, what is it about so many books including the line, “I’ve got you” in them… making me swoon and sigh and smirk, as I think about Netflix? I give this book four and three quarter stars.

The epitome of a perfectly written romance.

Wow, I have just sat and consumed this book from cover to virtual cover, reading it in one hit. Seriously I couldn’t put it down, and I didn’t let life interfere with my reading pleasure. I wanted to find out what was going on so badly, and yet I didn’t want to stop reading about the beautiful relationship that Darcy and Ryan had.

While my heart broke initially for Darcy, I was rapt that she’d escaped a miserable life by the skin of her teeth. Jacob was but a gorgeous looking facade, filled with an ugly rhetoric. Her, I absolutely adored. She wasn’t a game player and she was honest with her emotions. Her two best friends Steph and Freya were as funny as a fight and were totally on board in their support of Darcy and her relationship choices, until they realised that an intervention had to be staged. Their banter was witty and hilarious, and they would not take no for an answer, being the best sort of friends to have on your side.

With tattoos and a lip piercing, (seriously, I’m sliding out of my chair at the thought!!!), I know which twin brother I’d prefer. Ryan was not only as hot as all hell but he had the most gorgeous nature about him. He was truly a beautiful man both inside and out and I absolutely loved everything about him. I savoured every word from his POV and how much he truly loved her. He was perfectly written for Darcy.

As an interesting aside, Jacob’s POV showed up, and he certainly didn’t help his case. I have to admit, that I truly enjoy seeing the alternate, or multiple POV’s show up in books when authors decide to write them.

THE FIRST RULE is the epitome of what romance books are all about. It was beautifully executed, absolutely keeping my romantic heart full of every emotion from shock and angst through to a wonderful mushy and happy love. Every word contributed perfectly to this story, and I have no doubt in saying that this is my favourite book of Ms Goodin’s to date. It deserves ALL the stars! 🌟💖🌟

Making it Right . . .

Darcy Shearer just had her heart ripped out at the altar when Jacob walked out on her minutes before the ceremony, right in front of 300 people! So she locked herself in the honeymoon suite to cry and get drunk. Her friends tried to coax her to open the door, but she was humiliated and could not face anyone. When Ryan arrived, he convinced her to open the door and talk with him.

Ryan Steele is the ex-groom’s identical twin, but they are totally different personalities. Jacob is a self-centered disgusting piece of humanity. Ryan is caring and loving. He has loved Darcy since he first saw her, before a mistaken identity let his brother steal her away from him. There was no pity in his voice now, just understanding of her pain. He encouraged her to let out all her anger, then she confessed they had been trying for a baby. As she nodded off to nap, he promised her she would be a mom… he would make sure of it.

When Darcy woke, they talked more and she regretted not having a child. So he offered to have a child with her. Finally, she agreed to try once only. They wrote down rules then signed the paper. Promising her she can trust him, that he will take care of her, they finally kiss, determined to make her feel loved. They had a beautiful night together. But in the morning, Darcy told him it was a mistake and asked him to leave. Was this the end of it? Would she ever want to see him again? Or would she want to, if only to tell him that they have a child on the way?

This story is so excellent, the contrast between Ryan and Jacob letting us feel happy for Darcy to be loved by such a man. There is more to come, and it won’t be an easy path. Grab your copy and experience something very deep and emotional that will stay on your mind. The story line is well-written and will take the reader through strong emotions, suspense, and hope as these two move toward their destiny. Will it be with each other?

The First Rule - Nicole S Goodin
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

If I could delivery ten stars I certainly would for this story.
Nicole S Goodin has been on a bit of a hiatus with her writing but she’s back baby and what a way to arrive.

The First Rule had everything a second chance romance needs to sear it into your soul. Every emotion, everything bit of intrigue and every heartfelt and heartbreaking moment was captivating. But let’s not forget the brilliance of the characters.

I was totally on board with Darcy Shearer from the very start. She’d been wronged by her douche ex fiancé and left at the alter. What followed was a well crafted and at times heart breaking story that left me completely captivated.

Ryan Steele could not be more perfect for Darcy but when the truth comes out about Jacob, the ex’s, philandering ways….. you definitely join team Darcy & Ryan.

Nicole’s characters are strong, thoughtful and compassionate, all except Jacob and his father Conrad. Those two deserve a dirt nap for what they put Darcy through.
I loved the secondary characters of Darcy’s friends Steph and Freya. They give a nice kick of hilarity to this story and add another fabulous layer.

Such a great book, I was sad to reach the end of the story.
Welcome back Nicole. I absolutely loved The First Rule.

Wow, this book started off with a BANG and kept my attention until the last page. Darcy and Ryan have some serious chemistry that is jumping off the pages from the beginning and we are in for quite a shocker with Ryan's identical twin brother who is a real piece of work. We don't find out how much until the end and WOW... didn't see that coming!
When identical twins are younger you know they like to play tricks on adults since they can't tell them apart. No one really expects the immaturity and jealousy to carry over into adulthood for any reason other than jealousy, entitlement and pettiness and this is what we have with Ryan's twin brother. While this is not a suspensful genre, it definitely kept me turning the pages towards the end! I didn't see how the author was going to tie this story up neatly without rushing the ending and WHAT AN AWESOME JOB SHE DID!

This is my first book by this author BUT WILL NOT BE MY LAST....I love her writing style. There was sexual tension and chemistry but there was not too much sex and I didn't miss it or feel that the book was lacking anything. It was that good!
Definitely one click this book as you will not be disappointed!

I absolutely could not put this story down until the very happy and wonderful ending!!! In fact my day was completely dedicated to reading this one because I just could not let go of it.. It was an incredible read that is nicely developed with some really good twists. It is a second chance at love where rules are made to be broken but there is a twist in that second chance. This is Darcy and Ryan's story. I love these two characters and their story. He is so perfect for her and they love each other "To the moon and all of the stars" but it is not an easy path to get that happiness. I don't want to ruin this story by giving to much away let's just say they have someone working against him. They also have some very protective best friends one definitely comes around and becomes accepting. This story does have slang that is not common in the USA but definitely New Zealand vernacular. I loved how it added to the story and I learned a little bit. I really like this writer. The first stories I picked up by her are her "Calendar Boys" series. I was hooked but her writing continues to get better and better. I cannot wait to see what she writes next.

So much of this story had a melancholy, bittersweet feeling to it. The male lead, Ryan, knew that he’d met and loved the female lead, Darcy, before she’d been misled by his identical twin into a relationship with him. So much hinged on the fact that Darcy had never been told. Whilst I understood why Ryan continued to keep it a secret for most of the story and all of the five years prior, it frustrated me, because many things would have been different if he’d only spoken up.

The twin brother is a narcissistic jerk, well written, and the character you love to hate (usually because, unfortunately, you know someone similar).

The story is mostly dual POV (the twin has a couple of sections), well written and edited, and a lovely read. It was the first one I’ve read by this author and it was engaging. I especially enjoyed how deeply the male lead felt emotions AND was not afraid to let them be seen.

I could not put this book down as the story grabbed me right from the beginning and I didn't stop reading until the end of the book. It's well written with romance, heat, angst, and HEA. The book flows from one scene to the next. The characters are so well written, Ryan and Darcy work through the issues that both of them have, Jacob (Ryan’s identical twin) had dumped Darcy at the altar in front of the 300 guests. Darcy’s friends Steph and Freya stay by her side after she was left at the altar and when she finds out she is pregnant with Ryan’s baby, and at the end when Jacob has literally kidnapped Darcy and is threatening her with the taking of her baby. Ryan has a great friend and business partner in Rebel who has stood by him through all his family and love problems. I don’t want to ruin the book. Again, I loved the book, definitely recommend reading! I am definitely going to look for more books by this author as I really enjoy her writing.

Okay this may have been my intro to this author but she's certainly gain a true fan. The characters ALONE made me a forever fan. I could see each of them in my mind and felt they were real from Darcy's (leading lady) best friends Steph and Freya to Ryan's (leading guy) best friend Rebel. I await each of them having their own story (hint, hint) to the author lol.

But this story behind to Darcy and Ryan who went through over five years of confusion, secrets, heartbreak, anger, self discovery, and more. But when they found true love it was worth it all. So without spoilers understand they had constant even lurking to prevent them being together that seems mind boggling but when you think of the richest, most despicable wealthy business person multiply it times 20 and you have a glimpse of what they were dealing with.

Darcy is devastated and humiliated on her wedding day when the groom jilts her at the altar in front of all their guests. He just says he is done and walks away with no explanation. Her ex-fiancé’s brother shows up later that evening at the honeymoon suite where she is holed up with a bottle of tequila. Several shots later she’s telling Ryan about how much she wants to be a mom and that now she might never have the chance. He volunteers to be her sperm donor using the natural method, and they jointly come up with 3 rules.

Darcy and Ryan were an adorable couple to read about as they each try to overcome significant emotional pain. Darcy’s two best friends are a riot and added plenty of humor to the story.

The revelations that come out in the showdown between Ryan and his twin brother, Jacob were so satisfying and Jacob’s realization that someone else had the best of his was perfect. I just wish it had happened much sooner than it did in the story.

When Darcy is dumped on her wedding day not even her close friends can console her. Ryan is her ex fiancé's brother and she is stunned when he comes to see her. Ryan has always had feelings for her but when she ended up with his brother he tried to let them go. However now that she is free Ryan is going to try and get her to see him. He's there for her when she lets out all her hurt and anger about his brother. They get real close by this however the next day Darcy has regrets about it all and makes him leave. It takes her friends convincing her to see Ryan before she'll go after him months later. Can they find a way to be together? Will their connection to his brother keep them apart?

This is an amazing story that will captivate you from beginning to end. This is a well written and very entertaining story. I would recommend this book to any book lover.

Cute, but quick read!

Let’s just say I’ve only gotten into romance novels in the last couple years but I’m hooked.

I love second chance romances. And this one is great. It follows Darcy, a young woman who is left at the alter by her narcissistic ex and reconnects with his twin brother the night of what was supposed to be her wedding.

The characters are refreshing. Darcy is both genuine and relatable. Coming out of a toxic relationship left her feeling broken and the emotional roller coaster was something that I just wanted to reach through and hug her.

Our big bad biker boy…erm, man, Ryan is a tatted and pierced bad boy fantasy come true. But to have that bad boy persona and still be a giant teddy bear? Hello swoon.

The story is well conceived and written. I thought it was paced well and although some of Darcy’s decisions were a bit out of character, I still thought it was a great read. It’s a fit for anyone into romance.

This story follows Darcy and Ryan's love story.

After a devastating break up filled with public humiliation, Darcy finds herself left at the alter on her wedding day. Stepping in to check on her well being is the groom's twin brother - Ryan. During the drunken aftermath of the break-up, the pair find themselves coming to an agreement that Ryan will be a one-time sperm donor for her child. The rules are simple: 1) No feelings, 2) No one is to know, and 3) This is to be a one-time thing only, no re-dos. But as Ryan puts "how can I agree to no feelings when they are already there?"

8 weeks later Darcy finds herself looking at a positive pregnancy test. After letting Ryan know that he was a father-to-be, he takes the opportunity to show Darcy that he was who she should've been with all along. This forbidden love is faced with some serious challenges along the way, and Darcy is faced with a choice: who will her future truly be with?

I really loved this book so much. Ryan is absolute perfection. One of the best (if not the best) book boyfriends out there. Unlike his no-good evil twin brother from HELL, he was so supportive, considerate, and respectful of Darcy and her feelings. Jacob is horrible. He is the most disgusting character ever which makes Ryan shine like the star he is. I wish we could get an explanation as to why Jacob did all that he did. I was really interested in why his relationship shifted with his brother and why he would betray him. It was stated that they were close when they were kids but we never really get an explanation as to why they fell out (which seemed to be before Darcy stepped into the picture). But this book is absolutely beautiful. The way Ryan talks about Darcy was so heartwarming. Too bad he doesn't exist in real life :(. Highly suggest you read this book. Will put you in your feelings real quick.

You ever want to punch someone in the balls? Well Jacob deserves several swift kicks to the junk. Repeatedly.

Darcy met her soulmate one night. He was dressed like Superman. Then five years later she was left at the alter on her wedding day. The last person she expected to come comfort her was her ex's identical twin brother. Well, physically they aren't identical anymore. Ryan grew out his hair and is covered in tattoos and piercings.

Ryan, he's been in love with Darcy since they first met. But she doesn't know that. And he's not ready to tell her. He holds her while she cries and when she says she just wants to be a mom he offers to help. He would do anything for her.

Let me tell you, this story had heart breaks, it has joy and love. It had me mad and ready to hurt someone (mainly Jacob and father Steele). But it was a wonderfully told story that took me no time to read. I absolutely enjoyed it.

very good read

This was a first time read by this author. Was very impressed with the writing style and the content, as well as the ability to connect with the characters. I would read it again and even other books by this author.
Overview: Darcy is a mess on the floor of the honeymoon suite. Jacob walked out of their wedding a few hours earlier. His twin brother Ryan was pounding on the door wanting to come in. I loved this book about Dacy and Ryan. Darcy gets left at the alter by Jacob. and his twin Ryan comes to the rescue. He talks her down and she tells him she wants to have a baby unknowing to her that her ex-fiancee Jacob had a vasectomy two years ago. Ryan came up with the idea of him being the donor so she could have a baby. She ends up pregnant after that one night together she tells Ryan and she moves in with him. While the ex which is the evil twin is keeping tabs on her and could slap him for being self-centered and only thinking what he wants. He doesn't want her but he does want his brother to have her either. Because he knows the night he meets Darcy his twin brother saw her first. You have to read the book to find out what happens in the end.

I volunteered to read this ARC for an honest review. I enjoyed this story about Ryan and Darcy. They meet at a Halloween party, she's Barbie and he's Superman. They hit it off but when he returns from the bathroom she's gone it's the beginning of a nightmare for him. His identical twin moved in on her. Now flash forward 5 years and Jacob had left Darcy at the alter on their wedding day. Ryan tries to comfort her. Starting the rules. But he breaks then got her and will do it again. Finding out she's pregnant leads to since crazy months. But when Jacob pushes his way back into her life, everything starts crumbling. Ryan pulls on his knight's armor and saves his Princess. Great HEA after secrets are revealed.
