Huntress Ro LeFèvre is offered a job to hunt the sirens who have been sinking the king of Angleterre’s ships, and in turn, vast amounts of his wealth. All who have gone before her have failed. Fleeing heartbreak, Ro gladly accepts, but there’s just one problem. The king will credit the Marquis de la Valère, and no other women are allowed on the voyage. Ro will just see about that. Hiring an all-female pirate crew without the king’s knowledge, Ro hopes they will follow her to the Caribbean, not take the gold and flee. But when Ro is plunged deep into the ocean by the siren she’s being paid to kill, presented the sirens’ side of the story at knife point, and pressed to join them or die, Ro must decide whether to complete her mission, join the sirens, or something in between. Before the sirens sink the ship full of men above.
This high-seas adventure is a Little Mermaid reimagining of the Hans Christian Andersen persuasion and the second book in the Beast Hunters series.

Silence the Siren by Michele Israel Harper is a delightful adventure filled with pirates, sirens, a huntress, and hints of a popular tale readers thought they knew. Harper does a fabulous job at inviting her readers on a journey across the ocean and below the surface of the water. The description of the boat and the underwater Siren's world are detailed and captivating. My imagination bloomed as much as the huntress bloomed in her drive to complete her quest. The plot moved quick fast for a story that took place on a ship and a certain point in the ocean for the majority of the novel. I have read Beast Hunter and Kill the Beast, so I am pretty familiar with the Huntress' past story. Not that it is important to understand this story, but it does deepen the character journey of Ro, the Huntress. Of course, what story that is categorized as a fairy tale does not have a hint of romance. Romance starts to sparkle between Ro and a deckhand. Harper has left this open-ended, so readers will have to return to the next installment. Overall, Silence the Siren is a thick, hardy novel that really captured my attention. I had a hard time putting it down and can't wait for the next installment. There is some questions that I need to have answered about Ro, the huntress. Anyone who enjoys pirates, fairy tales, or a story full of adventure should pick up this book.
I received a complimentary copy of Silence the Siren by Michele Israel Harper by Love2ReadLove2Write Publishing, but the opinions stated are all my own.
I absolutely loved writing this story, and it was such a pleasure to take elements from Andersen's Little Mermaid and weave them into my own tale.
I got to research ships, pirates, muses of sirens and pods of mermaids, various legends and fairy tales featuring sirens and mermaids, and weapons of the eighteenth century.
And of course it features my French Huntress Ro LeFèvre, which is one of my favorite characters I have ever written.
Since Amazon adds a rating after I go through my ebook for glitches (didn't find any!), I wanted to add my thoughts on writing this high-seas adventure!
Feel free to ask me any questions, and I would love to read your review when you finish this story. All my love!
This book is absolutely amazing! I loved it so much! Once again, Michele does an outstanding job at taking a fairy tale and making it fresh and exciting! I cannot wait to read the next one! Bravo!
This was my first book to read by Michele Israel Harper, and I was not disappointed! I was engrossed from the first page.
This book follows Ro, a huntress, as she sets out on a mission to broker peace with sirens. And let me tell you, it isn't at all what she expected. Nor I!
From the moment Ro's sassy attitude shows to the end, I could so relate to her. She's such a great character. She has flaws, but we all do.
Oh, and then there's Olt. Yummy. He's definitely a good reason to read this, but the romance factor isn't nearly as much as the action. So if romance isn't your thing, you're all set to read this. You don't even have to read book 1 or the prequel to enjoy it because I didn't. But now, I want to!
I wasn't a big fan of the character Cen, but in the end, I really grew fond of that character.
The pirates were fun additions too.
In short, this book is so much fun, full of action, and a fantastic read. I highly recommend it!
I am officially hooked on the Beast Hunters series. I can not wait for Ro's next adventure. I loved Silence the Siren. There were moments I did not expect and the book definitely did not end how I expected. Ro is on another adventure and she is still no damsel in distress. This time she is trying to save sailors from being taken by Sirens, but she's also on a mission to save the sirens if she can. Her desire is peace above all. There is a war between sirens and humans that the humans are losing and true to the nature of war, the price of peace is costly. Ro faces choices with high costs and she faces many fears as well. Many new characters are introduced in this second book that I believe and hope we will see again in the future. Michele weaves elements that hint at future adventures and little tidbits of information that leave you wanting answers that are promised in her future books. Silence the Siren had a good pace. The time on the boat was not boring and was a great opportunity to get to know Ro better and a couple of the new characters, Cendre and Olt. The end was high action and I felt the tension of the battle and negotiations along with Ro. As I said I did not expect how it ended.
What I liked: - I love Ro. I love how she is strong and puts on a tough face, but we the readers get to see what she is really thinking. I love how she's not really in control. It's obvious that someone is helping her and when she wins a victory, it is never through her own ability and power.
- The setting. I love pirates and the open seas. We see more of the King's men than the pirates, but it all takes place on a boat so I was a happy reader.
- The sirens! I hope we get to see them again and because of a comment made by one of sirens, I think we will. Their world sounded beautiful and I could easily picture it in my head. Her descriptions of how they looked were well written.
- The romance is interesting, it's not a true romance, just some hints here and there. I'm honestly not sure if there is a romance which keeps me reading and waiting for the next one. However if you are not a romance fan, you can definitely still enjoy this book.
What I didn't like: - I'm torn on if I like this style or not. Every time I think we must be close to the end of the book, Michele throws something new and unexpected in that keeps the action going. For the most part I like the twists, but sometimes it felt like it dragged just a tiny bit. - Also torn on if I like this or not. There are a lot of unanswered questions of things thrown in. If these get addressed in later books then you can move this to the what I like section. I enjoy overarching themes in series.
Overall I totally recommend Silence the Siren. It's a great fairy tale retelling. You can tell Michele knows her fairy tales and she skillfully weaves the elements into her story without copying them exactly.
If you're a fan of historical fiction combined with fantasy and fairy tale retelling, then this is the series for you! Michele expertly weaves together history, fairy tale lore, and a colorful cast of characters into a vibrant and unique fantasy world that's all her own.
The world itself is girtty, dark, a world that would make the Brother's Grimm proud. But at the same time it points to the light, to hope, to resisting evil and pursuing good.
And, if you're a fan of a slow-burn, long navel voyage, then Silence the Siren is right up your alley! I love Ro's fierce personality, Olt's sarcastic charm, but I have to say, Cendre stole the show at the end! No spoilers, but she's definitely my favorite character hands-down!
Now for content disclosure: there's no major cussing, however there is swearing present, along with some British and French swears. No sexual content happens on screen, however the Sirens are described as nude at one point but it doesn't get too detailed. In terms of thematic content, sexual abuse is a strong theme in this story. There is alcohol and substance use present (this is a pirate book after all). Good and bad magic are also present, but are handled in a more allegorical way. The biggest content warning is the violence. For the most part, it's not bad, but there is a scene where a group of Siren's are gutted, which is pretty intense. For the violence, I give this book a PG-13 rating, however, the rest of the content is definitely clean, so if intense action doesn't bother you too much, this might be the book for you
If you're looking for a long voyage on the high seas in search of adventure and thrill, definitely give this a read!
This high-seas adventure is a Little Mermaid reimagining of the Hans Christian Andersen classic and the second book in the Beast Hunters series. Huntress Ro is offered a job to hunt the sirens who have been sinking the king’s ships. She hires an all-female pirate crew to help. But before the sirens sink the king’s ship, Ro must decide if she’ll join them. Along the way, she finds another sister and a human to love. I love the strong female lead! But I was also confused when Ro agreed to not work out on the ship as per the Captain’s orders. A strong woman would have demanded her rights and not given in to a man’s opinions, especially since she needs physical strength as a huntress. The beginning of the book includes too much French dialogue that I don’t understand - I read the Kindle version and didn’t see the glossary of terms until the end. Some of the magic references were also confusing. Throughout the book, Ro and Olt feel a physical attraction, and there are plenty of mentions about a man’s physique - not a woman’s, lusting after men’s muscles, and innuendos of inappropriate and unwanted physical touching and even sexual assault. Basically, the sirens are angry about slavery. Totally agree! The theme of forgiveness offered some positivity and served as an antidote to the murder and violent scenes. This book has some redeeming qualities, particularly Ro and Cen, but it’s long and boring in places. After the first few chapters, I no longer cared to finish reading.
This book was, honestly, better than I even expected. I knew it would be about sirens — the not-so-nice distant relatives of the loveable mer-creatures from fairy tales — but I didn’t know just how villainous those sirens would be and just how much I would enjoy reading about Ro’s encounter with them. I definitely have not gotten enough sleep lately, because I have stayed up far too late turning pages to find out what could possibly happen next to the crews of the King’s Ransom and the Siren Hunter.
The Beast Hunter series just keeps getting better. I really liked Ro, the no-nonsense huntress from Beast Hunter and Kill the Beast, the tough, yet vulnerable heroine. But Ro in Silence the Siren is even more complex, and she continues to impress me with her strength, both physically and emotionally. And Olt is a perfect comic counter-point to Ro’s intensity.
I can’t wait to read Ro’s next adventure (Quell the Nightengale, coming soon from L2L2 Publishing!). This was such a great read, well-balanced with excitement and poignancy, and that makes this story a 4.5 out of 5 stars read for me!
Many, many thanks to Michele Israel Harper and L2L2 Publishing for the complimentary copy of this novel. I wasn’t even required to give a review (let alone a positive one), but I had to share it with everyone, because it’s a great story! All opinions are my very own!
StS does not suffer from the "sophomore slump" (In fact, this one better than the first one!) We get Ro (of course!), an untrustworthy king, a mysterious benefactor, a cute crewmate, two crews of pirates, and lots of blood-thirsty sirens--something for everyone! If you enjoy fairy tale retellings, pick this one up!
Starting with Book #2 in this series probably wasn't the best move. But holy cow, this novel was amazing. With compelling characters, strong themes, and heart-wrenching dilemmas, this is one of the best Christian-made fantasy novels I've read this year. Highly recommended (though perhaps read the other books in the series before this one!)
If you love a unique, adventurous, and fun fairy tale retelling than this is the series for you. This was a super fun take on mermaids, and all the twists at the end made it all the more exciting. A great story with a spunky heroine!
