Chanakya Neeti is a treatise on the ideal way of life and shows Chanakya's deep study of the Indian way of life. Chanakya also developed Neeti-Sutras (aphorisms - pithy sentences) that tell people how they should behave. Of these well-known 455 sutras, about 216 refer to rajaneeti (the dos and don'ts of running a kingdom). Apparently, Chanakya used these sutras to groom Chandragupta and other selected disciples in the art of ruling a kingdom.
I dnf’d this after the 4th chapter, around 1 hour into listening this. Picked this up because I found it was free on Audible, while browsing.
If you are an Indian then you have heard of Chanakya Neeti. While the laws of this book might have held true in an age old era, it doesn’t hold true today. At least, all of it doesn’t and shouldn’t be holding true today. It’s a good read if you want to study a time period, just don’t pick it up as a self help. While some verses are self help, they are pretty generic and the rest can be quite damaging. I found myself cringing and laughing at some parts of it.
I was drawn to this book as many others due to the place Chanakya holds in the ancient Indian history. While this is certainly a great resource to glimpse at life in India 2500 years ago, this self help book is not appropriate for modern times. One would have to exercise great caution in finding good advice relevant to current context, as it’s full of quotes that would be considered misogynistic and discriminatory today. If you are a history buff like me, by all means do read it but it’s not a great leadership guide book for modern day aspiring Chandragupta Mauryas.
It is informative, beginning with Chanakya's childhood and how he meets various people throughout his life. There are shlokas that discuss various aspects of today's society and how to navigate the line between right and wrong.
