Rosa Kusstatscher fue capaz de construir su imperio de la moda gracias a su capacidad para encontrar la imagen perfecta para cada momento, sin embargo, ahora que se prepara para el encuentro más importante de su vida, no tiene tan claro qué debería llevar. Toda su vida la ha llevado a este momento: una joven campesina pobre de un pueblo de las montañas de Italia que tuvo que sufrir lo peor de la guerra, huir, abandonar a quienes más quería, y hacerse un hueco en el mundo a pesar de todo lo que se interponía en su camino.

En un primer momento, la introducción que hace Rosa de cada capítulo, comparando todo con la moda, me dejó un tanto desconcertada, pero reconozco que pronto llegué a quedarme encandilada con cada uno de esos preámbulos; y después de cada uno de ellos, llegaba una parte de su vida, llena de momentos duros y de sufrimiento, pero también de momentos preciosos y de felicidad, lo que ha hecho que toda la novela fuese una auténtica montaña rusa en la que acompañamos a esta joven que tiene que hacer frente a lo peor del mundo y a decisiones dificilísimas, con la que es muy fácil conectar dede el primer momento y a la que es imposible no tomar cariño.

Me ha encantado cómo iba evolucionando la historia y cómo iba creciendo el personaje, lo viajes por Europa, Río y Nueva York, las amigas que hace por el camino, cómo vive el amor... y cómo se va adaptando a los tiempos que la rodean, una auténtica superviviente. Absolutamente toda la novela me ha fascinado, pero reconozco que los últimos capítulos los he leído con el corazón en un puño por lo que suponían para ella... ¡me ha encantado cómo se ha cerrado la historia!

The story begins in 1991 with 63 year old Rosa preparing for an important meeting. She is choosing her outfit with great care and is clearly nervous. As she gets ready she has an incredible story to tell.

Rosa’s life story spans from her childhood in the Italian Alps with her family, to the tumultuous and painful time of the Nazi occupation and her subsequent journey to Switzerland and then Paris, where through sacrifice, focus and hard work she became a muse to Dior, learning her craft of becoming a seamstress and designer in her own right. In some aspects, more particularly in that Rosa was such a strong character, the story reminded me of one that I read as a teenager, Barbara Taylor Bradford’s A Woman of Substance.

I didn’t always agree with the decisions that Rosa made, especially in her younger years, there were times when she seemed rather self-centred, and ungrateful although I accept she had a focus and ambition and did what she thought was best at the time to achieve her goal. Regardless of this, she was fascinating and beguiling and loyal to those who had helped her.

This is an epic and engrossing story of love, loss, heartache, glamour and seeking forgiveness. For a character of such a young age, Rosa had seen, endured and achieved so much – and the story leads you through her life, loves and travels – from the early years in Paris to Rio and New York.

There was so much to love about this book, the story of a life well lived with both joy and heartbreak, there are wonderfully drawn characters – far too many to mention individually but they all give depth and substance to the story. I loved the fashion element detail of the time and the glamour of Dior and Chanel and it was an interesting look behind the scenes.

I don’t want to give too much detail about the plot, it’s a story you need to discover for yourself. All I will say is that I loved it and eagerly devoured every page. This is the author’s debut novel and is one to be proud of. I do hope she writes more.

Піднімаються різного роду проблеми тих часів, які десь перегукуються дуже сильно і з нашим часом.
Не було якоїсь награності, слощавості та чогось зайвого в книзі. Все дуже гармонійно від самого початку і до останнього речення.
Однозначно буду рекомендувати цю книгу 💞

No sé muy bien como hacer esta reseña porque el libro ha sido un completo desastre y cuando me pasa esto me cuesta mucho contaros mi experiencia. Y es que además creo que ha sido cosa mía, que este libro directamente no es para mí, porque he visto opiniones buenísimas y todo el que lo lee termina enamorado y para mi ha sido un suplicio ponerme con él y avanzar, ha influido mucho que la protagonista no me gustará nada porque al contarnos su vida a mi me daba lo mismo lo que le pasara y llegó un momento que me hartó tanto drama e idas y venidas, me resultó muy tedioso y cargante.

La trama es lo que cuento de sinopsis, las hazañas de Rosa, que nos van contando su vida desde la niñez hasta le vejez y todo lo que ello abarca, hay romance, amistad, adicciones, superación, ambición y mucha moda. Nos lo va contando desde el presente pues al estar nerviosa por una cita súper importante nos pone en situación para que entendamos su nerviosismo, de esta manera, empieza los capítulos relatando como se prepara para la cita o lo importante que es para ella la crema, el maquillaje o cosas de este estilo y luego salta al pasado. A mi me ponía muy nerviosa la verdad y esos fragmentos del presente me daban igual, sobre su pasado hay alguna cosilla interesante, pero entre que no me gustaba, que había cosas desagradables y encima Togo me parecía muy irreal y cogido con pinzas… pues el resultado ha sido una novela que se supone tenía que emocionarme y lo único que me ha generado es desidia y aburrimiento.

Ficción histórica que abarca la moda, el drama y el romance a través de las vivencias de una protagonista atípica.

Кравчиня з Парижа – книжка, на яку я повелося через згадування німецької окупації Тіролю в анотації. А тема війни, з зрозумілих причин, ой, яка тригерна. Я подумала, що це має бути щось глибоке. А ще красива обкладинка.

Але книжка для мене виявилась поверховою.

Герої пласкі ніби ляльки вирізані з картону, на які одягають такі ж паперові одьожки, а головна героїня Роза, яка ніби зациклена на своїй зовнішності і на тОму в що вона одягнута.

Ніби нічого дивного, що одягу надається стільки значення в книжці в назві якої є слово "кравчиня". Але тут якісь не ті акценти. Бо як так сталося, що Роза врешті стала крутою бізнесвумен так і не зрозуміло.

Здавалося б в розповіді є потенціал: тут і про окупацію і насилля, і втеча з поневіряннями, і кохання, і побудова кар'єра, і ніби які-не які пригоди, бо Роза пожила в різних країнах. Але я не відчула атмосфери жодного місця. Всього потрохи і ніщо по справжньому не прописане.

Історія рівна і нуднувата, лише під кінець додалось трохи динаміки.

Тут ніби і драма є, але якась та драма не драматична.

Роза розповідає комусь історію свого життя, звертаючись "моя люба", збираючись на зустріч з кимось дуже важливим. І читач не знає ні до кого вона звертається, ні з ким має зустрітись і чомусь ця манера мене дратувала. А сама Роза не викликала ні співчуття, ні захоплення, ні симпатії, ні розуміння – вона підхарювала.
Але не настільки, щоб кинути книжку 😅.

Кожна глава в "Кравчині з Парижа" має назву, яка визначає навколо якої деталі зосередиться розділ і яка буде знаковою в цій частині історії. Це досить цікавий прийом.

Тож, якщо ви хочете почитати чогось легкого і ненапряжного, відволіктися від новин – то ця книжка цілком згодиться.

Rosa Kusstatscher is een gevierd modeontwerper en ze heeft dankzij haar gevoel voor stijl en haar goede zakelijke inzicht een succesvol mode-imperium opgebouwd. Ze is van een ietwat naïef jong meisje uitgegroeid tot een krachtige, standvastige en zelfverzekerde vrouw, maar nu ze zich voorbereidt op de belangrijkste afspraak van haar leven laat haar besluitvaardigheid haar in de steek. Ze begint haar levensverhaal te vertellen aan ‘ma chère’, een onbekende dierbare, en terwijl je wordt meegenomen in dit bijzondere en aangrijpende verhaal leef je met Rosa mee op weg naar de grote onthulling.

Rosa is een interessant, gelaagd en eigenzinnig personage dat erg veel heeft meegemaakt in haar roerige leven. Na een jeugd in de Italiaanse Alpen overkomen haar vreselijke dingen tijdens de nazibezetting en vlucht ze naar Zwitserland, waar ze liefdevol wordt opgevangen maar ze uiteindelijk de zeer lastige beslissing maakt om alles en iedereen weer achter zich te laten, in de hoop op succes en een betere toekomst. Haar ambitie brengt haar naar Parijs, waar ze als muze van Dior de fijne kneepjes van het modevak leert en ze haar ontwerpen perfectioneert, ze ruikt nieuwe kansen in Rio de Janeiro en beproeft haar geluk in New York. Je leest over intrigerende ontmoetingen, hechte vriendschap en ontluikende liefde, maar hoewel ze op zakelijk vlak erg veel succes kent, wordt haar persoonlijke leven regelmatig gekenmerkt door ellende en verdriet en slaat ze telkens weer op de vlucht.

Haar enerverende leven is een aaneenschakeling van hoogte- en dieptepunten en terwijl je haar steeds beter leert kennen, mede door haar reacties op alle gebeurtenissen en de relaties met de bijpersonages die het verhaal nog meer kleur geven, kun je deze meeslepende pageturner steeds moeilijker wegleggen. Hoewel ik graag meer gelezen had over haar werkzaamheden, haar emoties wat verder op de voorgrond hadden kunnen staan en niet al haar beslissingen direct logisch of begrijpelijk zijn, omdat haar keuzes regelmatig puur worden gemotiveerd door ambitie, voel je sympathie voor haar, zie je hoe de wereld langzaamaan verandert en is het bewonderenswaardig dat ze ondanks alle grote stormen in haar leven overeind blijft staan en dat ze zich blijft ontwikkelen terwijl ze loyaal is aan de mensen die haar tijdens haar reis hebben geholpen.

Deze mooi geschreven roman over grote thema’s als doorzettingsvermogen, succes, liefde en verlies, rouw, spijt en vergeving, over levenslessen, tegenslagen en een rijk bestaan is realistisch en origineel, zet je aan het denken, laat je lang gissen naar de afloop, maakt indruk en beklijft en is dan ook zeker het lezen waard!

The Dressmaker of Paris follows Rosa through decades of her life from her childhood in the Italian alps to her illustrious career as a dressmaker and designer.

The story is told from Rosa's perspective as she is sharing her life story. This theoretically should make the reader feel closer to Rosa, but she comes off as distant and condescending in her narration.

I generally found Rosa deeply unlikeable. My heart went out to her when she was sexually assaulted and when she described her father's abuse, However, I found her incredibly hard to connect with as a reader.

Rosa completely lost me when she made an anti-Semitic comment. She said that she had never met a Jew before the professor she lives with in Switzerland and realizes that he is a human. There is certainly something to be said for realizing the similarities you have with those who are different from you, but the way it was phrased was jarring and upsetting to me.

I really wanted to like this book. The premise intrigued me, but I found the actual novel to be a boring slog with a snooty narrator.

Історія про юну дівчину яка не дивлячись на те що пережила німецьку окупацію, зґвалтування також їй довелося відмовитися від своєї дитини. Але вона стала сильною жінкою, яка не втратила жагу до життя і кохання.
Книга просто неймовірна, я останні глави читала просто зі сльозами на очах, нарешті в неї є справжня родина та донька, і я просто була неймовірно рада що після стількох років вона нарешті зустрілась зі своїм сином.
Я захоплювалась тим як авторка розповідає нам історію головної героїні, я прям відчувала всі емоції, раділа разом з героями, сумувала та страждала.

Нарешті «чорна смуга» невдалих книжок закінчилась і нарешті було в задоволення читати. Смакувала і розтягувала, щоб не «зʼїсти» за 2 дні. Історія і виклад авторки часом нагадували «Місто дівчат», хоча остання була трохи поверхневою порівняно. Стільки життів прожито! Клас. Ще деякий час буду під враженнями.

For a debut novel, "The Dressmaker of Paris" is not bad. And for once, I'm happy that a historical fiction doesn't focus exclusively on WWII (although there are some references). The novel sets up an interesting premise: a woman’s unlikely journey from a small-town girl to global fashion success. But while the book delivers on historical detail, Georgia Kaufmann didn't create a truly immersive emotional experience for me.

Rosa Kusstatscher is a teenager born in South Tyrol, a German-speaking region that had been annexed by Italy at the end of World War I. In 1943, the region was occupied by Nazi Germany, and Rosa's village becomes home to a German detachment. Rosa is assaulted by the Nazi sergeant and becomes pregnant, and is helped to escape from the occupied territory and finds refuge in St. Gallen, in the home of a Jewish professor. Life takes her to Paris, where she reinvents herself as a seamstress and begins working with Christian Dior, then to Rio de Janeiro and eventually New York, becoming a high-profile fashion designer who builds a successful business. But at what price?

Rosa's life is shaped by tragedy, but also by circumstance. One of the things that irked me and made her journey implausible was the easiness with which she accomplished everything. We are told she struggled, but we barely see her struggle, if you know what I mean; things just seem to fall in her lap with barely a hitch - her meeting Dior, him immediately noticing her and making her his muse, her relationships. Even her decisions feel easy, impulsive, especially the one that shaped her life the most - this alone made it difficult for me to connect with her as a character.

It's a first person narrative, but the emotional depth just isn’t there. Maybe because Rosa remains emotionally immature and incapable of confronting her fears until the very end. Or maybe because the book itself leans too heavily on factual accuracy - I did this, and then I went there etc. -, leaving little room for me to actually experience alongside Rosa. Everything is documented, but nothing is deeply felt. Her decision to run to Paris? Emotionally empty. Charles' sickness? Completely disregarded. Her marriage to Jim? Out of nowhere. When did she even fall in love with him? And then suddenly—a daughter! And a Hollywood ending? It all feels more like a checklist of life events than an emotionally engaging story.

Rosa's life is a telenovela. That, in itself, is ok, we all thrive on drama sometimes and just want the protagonist to succeed, in the end. I didn't mind the romance, I even liked the relationship between her and Charles, and even the one with Izzy, where she broke societal expectations on interracial relationships. But I found the sex scenes too "technical", and some graphic descriptions quite uncomfortable.

That said, I enjoyed the atmosphere, the descriptions of her home town and the way Kaufmann roots her narrative in the larger historical context, through fashion and snippets of social and political events. I wish I'd seen Paris more (it honestly could have been any city, there's nothing memorable about it), but the New Year’s Eve in Rio, while brief, was vibrant and transported me back to the New Year of 2007, which I celebrated dressed in white, on the Copacabana beach.

Overall, "The Dressmaker of Paris" presents an ambitious life story, but lacks the emotional depth to make it truly speak to me. It's the kind of chick-flick that would make a passable Hallmark movie, but will leave no lasting mark.

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I requested this book, but I tend to really enjoy anything Paris related and so the title reeled me in. In actual fact very little of the book is based in Paris, but this didn’t deter me and I was swept into an emotional roller coaster of a book. I honestly felt every single emotion whilst reading this soul-stirring and sentimental novel.

It’s beautifully constructed, narrated by the main character Rosa Kusstatsher who is telling her life story to someone referred to as ‘ma cherè’ - we don’t know who this is until towards the end. The narrative reflects on Rosa’s life, beginning in the Italian Alps in World War 2 and spanning several decades, we follow her through to Switzerland, Paris, Rio de Janeiro and finally New York. She escapes from Italy as a young girl after something devastating happens to her, she leaves her family and makes her way on her own. Rosa is a talented seamstress and we see her gradually becoming successful in building up her fashion empire. Some of the diverse characters we meet along the way are wonderful and you can’t help but empathise or fall in love with them. The story is not at all predictable and there are one or two twists that really surprised me.

The Dressmaker of Paris is a real treasure of a book which will stay with me for a long time to come. It’s a beautiful, emotional and thought provoking and I was completely captivated by this wonderful story.

Интересен роман - сравняват го с книгите на Наташа Лестър и наистина играят в един отбор, но все пак тук си личи, че това е дебют и има още какво да се желае. Историята на главната героиня определено е любопитна и увлекате��на за проследяване (за тези, които го взимат заради модата, да уточня, че тя играе по-голяма роля в първите глави на романа). Но самата героиня понякога ми беше трудна за разшифроване. Като цяло обаче романът ме остави с приятно чувство. :)

I used to never read historical fiction, but I've gotten to where I love it, especially if it centers around WWII and forward.
There were a lot of things that I loved about this book. For the most part, I liked the descriptions the author provided, her characterizations, the relationships that developed throughout the story, etc.
What I did not love was the snootiness at times of Rosa. She was not born into abject poverty. Yes, her family wasn't rich but they weren't street beggars either. Therefore, the ad nauseam descriptions of the types of marble installed in houses and the excessive grandness of everything in her life post-St. Gallen was a little much. It was more of a braggart's story where bragging was unnecessary and detracted from the story instead of added to it. I don't know if it's because the author grew up obsessed with money and privilege or what, but again, most of the expensive references were unnecessary, in my opinion. I also wish the ending had been a little more expansive as that's what the whole story was about essentially. And the title throws me; out of all of the places Rosa lived, with maybe the exception of St. Gallen, Paris was one of the places she lived for the least amount of time, yet she's the "dressmaker of Paris"???

Again, the storyline was good, for the most part, but there were a few too many trivial distractions for me to give it a higher review, unfortunately.

Written with such finesse that it's hard to believe this is the author's debut!

Rosa has a story to tell, and it is expertly written and unfolds beautifully. From her hard life as a young girl in a mountain village to the creator of a global fashion empire, she reveals everything - the good, the bad and, yes, the ugly. She is honest to a fault and her story is related while she prepares herself for the single most important meeting of her life.

I was first drawn to this book by both the title and cover; I've been known to create a few articles of clothing myself over the years so anything with 'dressmaker' in the title always piques my interest. I can't tell you how happy I am that I requested this one and didn't scroll on by. Unfolding at an even pace from first to last, it is a tantalising tale, which drew me in until I felt as if Rosa is - well, not my best friend, but definitely someone I was aware of. Skilfully created, this is an eloquent tale and I admired so much about Rosa whilst wondering if I would have been able to take the hard decisions she had to. This novel has left me feeling honoured and privileged to have been given a glimpse into Rosa's world and it's all wrapped up with a superb finale! Georgia Kaufmann is definitely an author to watch and, in all conscience, I really cannot give this one any less than a full five stars.

Rosa jest silną postacią, która ma swoje zdanie i cele, do których dąży kosztem wartości pozornie najważniejszych. Obraca się w towarzystwie wyrafinowanych biznesmenów i osób znających swoje miejsce, więc zaczyna walkę o własny status…
Salony mody, wybiegi, śliczne kreacje, błyszcząca biżuteria, onieśmielający zapach perfum i odważny makijaż to elementy, których tu nie brak. Świat mody, okalająca go sława i skandale zostały przedstawione w prawdziwym i fascynującym świetle, które nie kryje żadnych niedoskonałości i skaz…
Każdy wątek historii zaczyna się od nawiązania do niezbędnych rzeczy w świecie piękna i

This one was unfortunately a bit of a let down for me. I was intrigued by the premise of Paris, and the dressmaking protagonist. However, I feel as though Rosa's career in fashion was only a brief part of her story, and personally what I found to be the most interesting. I would have loved to read more about her time in Paris under Dior, but the focus was instead on Rosa's various relationships with men who all seem to inevitably die before her. I did enjoy the writing style but as I grew disinterested with the story, I also did with the writing to a point. I liked the memoir-style of the book, as well as how it takes us right from the beginning of her life, but I do think it made it feel a bit dense too. Rosa's story is very traumatic, but harrowing, and I do think Kaufmann portrays her struggle well. I really wanted to like this book, but I think the density of it and the fact that it unfortunately focuses more on Rosa's failed relationships than herself, meant it fell flat for me.

La vida de Rosa no fue nada fácil y nos permite vivirla a su lado mientras se la relata a alguien en el proceso de arreglarse para la noche más importante de su vida.

Son tantos los sucesos que tiene que vivir esta mujer, sus amores y sufrimientos, la relación con sus padres, el proceso de desprendimiento y de permitirse tomar decisiones aunque algunos puedan verlas como egoístas yo las veo como desinteresadas buscando el bien de alguien más.

Su vida en Suiza, el vivir en Paris y aprender de la moda y de grandes amigos que la acogerían y le enseñarían de este maravilloso mundo, también el lugar donde volvió a creer en el amor, Río donde disfrutó el amor y consiguió a su gran amiga de la vida, el amor de la música que la llevo a Nueva York donde pudo seguir creciendo y expandiendo su negocio y el aprendizaje que traía para ella.

Es difícil cuando nos muestran a una mujer tan decidida y fuerte, en un mundo en el que nos enseñaron que la mujer siempre es la que tiene que ceder.

Hay personajes que se me quedan tatuados en el corazón, el cartero, Thomas, el profesor, Ida, Dior, Madeleine, Charles, Graça, Izzy, Jim, cada uno por razones diferente y por el significado que tuvieron en la vida de rosa, yo creo que Los Ángeles son estas personas que están con nosotros acompañándonos y guiándonos en los momentos difíciles.

Me gustó mucho, una novela interesante y entretenida, a pesar de tener varios momentos de tristeza. Se lee fácil. Muy recomendado 👌
