A New York-based screenwriter, Carl John Lee has written a bunch of movies you've either never seen, or would never admit to seeing.
Inspired by Roger Corman and the golden age of exploitation films, Lee probes deep into the filthy underbelly of America, contrasting his bleak worldview with dark humor.
He has three dogs, two cats, and not a shred of dignity.
Five former highschool students want to meet up for a 20 years reunion. They don't get to their remote cabin but stuck in a mysterious mansion. The past is catching up with them. Who is Jenifer? What have they done to her? Sinister tale about a ghostly woman and her helpers. Who will survive the revenge of the dead woman? Nothing new under the sun but routinely told with some unexpected twists (especially Lee) and nice reference to exploitation movies. Of course you'll come across some lewd scenes but I had expected worse. Lurid title that bit more off than it chewed, but fast paced and entertaining, LOL, but I quite enjoyed the story. You'll even get a spooky clown here... Recommended!
I mean totally, completely without any information.
The follow-up to this story has been released (I saw a picture of the cover on FB and one of my friends shared it on his feed) and I wanted to get that, so I got both to make sure I don’t miss anything, just to get the feel for the writer.
“I think you've overstayed your welcome in So go the fuck away, don't come again I'll see your face in the fire and burn it out” LIKE A VILLIAN – Bad Omens
Well, Mr. Lee, you have ruined a night’s sleep for me. Why? Because I could not put this fucking book down. I did not want to stop once I started – it is just a brilliant supernatural revenge story.
I want you to go into this one blind as well – maybe you’ll get the enjoyment I did from it. Just know this – it is based on a screenplay the author wrote in the 70’s for Exploitation cinema. There’s lots of sex and blood and nastiness going on in this one, so don’t think because it was written nearly half a century ago that he holds anything back.
My, my, my was there a lot of sex here in a mere 85 pages. But going into this book, the title should give you an idea of what it centers on. It’s all about revenge stemming from an awful event that happened decades before this group of old friends gets together for a reunion. Lots of violence and it focuses on what is needed, never deviating from the bare basic premise. You get very minimal information on our five main characters, which I didn’t love, and there were some areas that I needed much more on, but it has plenty of creepy moments. Not my favorite, or even the most original, story and really didn’t have any groundbreaking moments, but it was fine for what it set out to be. I also enjoyed the afterword concerning this story’s origin and Roger Corman. I grew up watching such classics as Carnosaur 1-3, Raptor (A rip off of a rip off!), and other such films that had his name attached. If you’re not familiar with his works, this story may seem like it has a lot more problematic areas than I mentioned, but for those of us in the other corner, it fits right in.
"Go for it. But bury me deep, you motherfucker. Bury me deep or I'll come back. I swear to Christ in heaven, I'll come back for you."
Holy hell, this is the kind of extreme horror I'm looking for!
Horror House of Perversion is a short, nasty horror read for everyone who finds catharsis in a victim's revenge story. If you've ever wanted the book version of I Spit On Your Grave or similar films, here you go: a group of rapists getting their comeuppance in vile, creative ways that will have you cringing and cheering at the same time.
At less than 100 pages, there isn't much more I can tell you about this story other than the fact that it was bloody, messy, and fantastic. Carl John Lee's writing is incredible and I'm so glad there's a sequel, as well as a few other books by this author waiting for me, because I'm going to snatch those right up.
This was such a fun little read, which I devoured in one sitting, although internet went down before I could review...maybe it’s telling me something lol 😆 This was my first Carl John Lee which I’ve read, but I’ll most definitely be reading more. It involves a group of ex high school friends who are meeting up for a 20 year reunion. That’s all I’m going to say about this novella as it’s a short read and quite fast paced. Highly recommended!!
3.5 ⭐️ This was upsetting. The premise: a group of 40 something’s (4 men, 1 woman), reunite after 20 or so years after doing something horrendous in college, and that something comes back to haunt them. This should have felt like a “good for her” horror book, and in a way it was, but in the way that “I Spit On Your Grave” was. Like, yeah, it is, but you still have to read *brutal* violence against women to get there.
There is a really nice twist at the end I wasn’t expecting, but yeah, this wasn’t one I particularly enjoyed.
Look, I don’t know about you, but I love enigmatic folk who seem to exist on the periphery of society. Whether through age, distrust of government/technology, or purely they have a disdain for the general world – these folk interest me to no end.
So it is, that one Carl John Lee arrived last year with his fantastic novella ‘The Blood Beast Mutations.’ I had the good fortune of interviewing Carl John and through a burgeoning relationship, he’s also in the process of creating a cover for an upcoming novel of mine.
Saying that – I still no few details. I assume he’s between 65 and 80. I believe this based on his inability to use technology as well as the stories he’s shared – many happening in the 70’s.
I was caught off guard with Blood Beast, being a debut, but with his history of screenplays and screenwriting, Lee knows how to spin a yarn. I was also caught off guard with his setting it in present day.
With his second release ‘Horror House of Perversion’ he once again sets it in the present day, but has adapted it from a screenplay he wrote roughly forty years ago, which is just phenomenal. I really appreciated having a digital arc sent my way, but do have the book preordered as well!
What I liked: The story itself follows a familiar narrative. A group of University friends gathers for a weekend in a cabin. It’s been many, many years since they’ve all been together.
It quickly becomes apparent that the group are fairly dysfunctional and most haven’t changed since those former days. But Carl John let’s us know that the group won’t just be having fun. No, this weekend, something from their past has decided it’s time to seek out vengeance.
I don’t care how old Carl John is, the man can write gore and death. It’s been a while since I’ve read a description that made me squirm, but we get a few here, especially when parts get severed and when things get inserted.
It was also incredibly refreshing to see a story where the men get picked off one at a time. This wasn’t your typically slasher flick where the busty blonde dies a quick death after taking her top off, and the story was the better for it.
What I didn’t like: I really enjoyed this one, but I gotta say – the lady who seemingly runs the house they stumble upon, was really odd and I’m not 100% sure her character really worked or had a purpose. No, scratch that. She had a purpose, she found the wounded women and gave them a home, but I think her part would’ve been better if we knew a bit about her or had more of a back story for her specifically and the WHY of her doing what she was doing.
Why you should buy this: If you like quick, brutal reads filled with the ol’ ultraviolence look no further. Carl John Lee is in command of every single word he puts on the page and leads the reader along like we’re a new puppy in his training class. This one flew by, had tons of cathartic moments and if this was a film, the budget would be mostly spent on blood. Great stuff by an author I hope more people discover, but also who continues to put more of these dark reads out.
This book was wild from beginning to end! It’s not your typical revenge book. It’s a mix of sweet revenge, ghosts, rape and gore.
Lee and his friends get together twenty years after graduating college to hang out and party it up in a cabin in the middle of the woods. Things do not go as planned and they end up in a spooky house in the middle of the woods.
This house is not a normal house and not a house that is inviting for everyone. The group must face their old ghosts and sins of the past as they get to know Mrs. Marcus and her beautiful daughters.
This story is about revenge in the most macabre way. Six people venture out to relive their college years to a remote cabin. Little do they know that the horror they left behind twenty years ago is back in full force. Excellent short story with extreme horror. Right up my alley
Hey, I've got a new book, this one based on a screenplay I wrote back in the 70s. It's pretty nasty. There are content warnings at the start. I hope you dig it. If not, then that's okay. We can still be friends.
Lee's newest release will pull you right in. Though short, I couldn't put it down. The story is good, and only becomes fucking awesome once you start reading. Some great humor, plenty of splatter, gore, sex, and depravity; it has everything it professes to be- and more! My list of favorite authors, though small, has acquired another name. After 'Blood Beast Mutations' I knew Carl John Lee would be an author I would be on the look out for, and with this newest release, I'm only more eager to read more of his work. Lee is amazing- buy this book now!
He wouldn’t live forever, Mrs. Marcus had told her, but he could last a long time if properly cared for. He was like a house plant who needed fed and watered every so often, and that was good.
This book was recommended to me by several people, they all swore I would love it, so, I bought it, read it, and loved every savage second of it! 😁
When Cal stops to pick up a hitchhiker, despite his mother's ample warnings over the years, unbeknownst to him, karma has come along for the ride! Raging karma, with an intense grudge! Karma continues to kick ass to the rest of this group of friends, who are hiding a very dark secret, on their 20 year reunion trip. When the friends become stranded in a torrential downpour, they feel their luck may have changed when they come across a house in the woods But that house doesn't seem to belong and once inside, they become victim to the abhorrent horrors within - with no escape - and eternal vengeance thrust upon them!
A quick read, that will hold your attention the entire way through! Jam packed with horror, it's tense, creepy and brutal! I loved the way this was written, the way the flashbacks blended into the storyline, and the humour was interwoven throughout. And that twist!!!! 😲
I do love a good revenge tale and this was definitely one of them! For everyone that said I should read this....Thank You!! I loved it!! 🖤
Thoroughly enjoyed this read. It was grittty, harsh, brutal, and vengeful. But not just as you would expect. A justified vengeance for those whom were brutalized in such a sickening way. It had you enthralled from start, pulling you into a world of pain and suffering, at the same time world of vengeance and the scorned. Feelings of justification being served, with the most extreme examples rightly served. The characters where all amazing, each bringing a different backdrop to their character. The storyline was great and although you sort of knew where it was heading, you are still shocked by what happens, and then the twist at the end an added bonus that gets you again. Definitely worth checking out, i would definitely recommend it.
Yikes! Carl John Lee is bringing the sex, pain, gore, and horror once again with Horror House of Perversion. SO much intensity and brutality - but let's face it: all these men deserved what they had coming to them. And it's a cool take to have the women reaping vengeance in a mode akin to I Spit On Your Grave, Last House on the Left (kinda), etc. And if there is one thing I can count on (but do I really want to??) is that the final act of a Carl John Lee book will have painful genital mutilation. Smashed, ripped, severed, you name it. Dicks are being destroyed. In addition to the splatter and gore we get some humor thrown in, too. The book can't be complete extreme brutality, right? Carl John Lee remains an author I will always be on the lookout for.
4.5 ⭐️ Let me start by saying I’m not a fan of ghost stories . I went into this book blind. Around 10 pages or so in you realize it’s a ghost story . I also realized by page 10 how much I was enjoying this story. This was a ghost story with a lot of blood, sex , gore and revenge. I absolutely loved it and will be seeking more from this author.
2.5/5 (rounded up for Goodreads) A group of college friends that made some horrific decisions in their heyday meet back up 20 years later for a cabin trip for old times sake. What they find is much more than they bargained for.
This was a quick, fun, disturbing read which some heavy subject matter. I mean, it’s extreme horror so it’s to be expected. Overall I enjoyed this, it kept me engaged but something wasn’t quite there for me. Writing style was good, storyline was interesting for sure. I think I just didn’t care for the characters enough to care what was happening to them.
I finished Horror House of Perversion by Carl John Lee, today. We have a group of college friends. They haven’t seen each other in 20 years, but they are having a get together at the cabin where they had their college graduation party. That party 20 years ago where something tragic happened. This group of party goers soon learns that not all tragedy stays buried. Sometimes it comes back for vengeance. If you love a good vengeance story, ghost story, blood and gore or all of the above, grab it. I absolutely adored this book!
Well...I'm not sure where to go with this book...I liked it in somes ways...but not in others. The characters were awful and I couldn't seem to create a bond with any of them, they just really annoyed me. The storyline was somewhat silly, but some of the scenes were brilliant, bloody gory and explicit. It wasn't the best read for me...and the ending was disappointing. I expected a lot more from this book....Shame!!
A very well written and creative revenge story with twists in all the right places. Love the setting, loathed some characters and overall just had a great time.
