The meaning behind Lin Mu’s name is the forest at night.

Every time Lu Rong signs his name, he would sign it wrongly, calling himself “Little Deer.”

Very long later, Lin Zhao signed with her fingers, smiling at the two people.

She signed, “The little deer is sleeping in the forest at night.”

A special group of people, a special progress of life, and a special love.

My silence, and your affections.

Please, world, treat us a little more warmly.

Volume: 4.6/5 🌟
Novel: A Tier (~4.7)

I feel like this story was very gentle. This story was just as the author wanted it to be and more. Seeing her authors note made me tear up, especially as I finished the story with how beautifully it ended:

🔹 I feel that youth is like the breeze, the clouds, the flowers and snow.
It's romantic, adorable and warm.
In conclusion, this is a story about growing up, love, and the many, many instances of warmth in humanity.

I had once thought about ending it all
I had yet to meet YOU
Because of an existence like yours
I fell a little in love with the world
Because of an existence like yours
I started to having a little more hope in the world. - Boku Ga Shinou To Omottanowa by Mika Nakashima

While writing this story, I kept thinking, and I earnestly hope that when everyone is feeling extremely exhausted, or extremely unhappy, you would be able to gain a little warmth and strength, even if it's just the tiniest bit, and you'll be able to bravely continue endeavoring on.
The path ahead might be long and lonely, but I hope that no matter what, you would never stop walking, as in this life, you will one day arrive at the stars.

Each character is written so well. From Mo Xiaoxiao and her metal leg and being athletic.

To Lin Zhao and her courage despite her deafness, not not letting those shackles bind her, she proved herself to be a master GO player.

To Xu Yilu and his blindness, being blind to seeing who the real ships are (teehee).

To Cao Zhan being such a cutie patootie! He made me cry most in the story. I was at first, confused about him and didn't think much of him. But by the end, I was like a proud mama. So proud of his hard work and how humble and gentle he is. I want to be his friend and show him human kindness. (ㅅ´ ˘ `) his speech had me bawling my eyes out!

His speech:

🔹 "In the past, I was terrified that people would scold me, that they would beat me, and that they would borrow my things and not return them to. However, now, if there are people bullying me, I'm no longer scared."

He said, "I have Kunqian, I have all of you. I have a lot of love, and I'm not afraid of anything."

He looked down at his speech, then raised his head again, smiling as he said, "Hello everyone, I'm Cao Zhan. You can call me Dopey."

Methodically, he gave a bow. "Today, I'm proud of Kunqian, and tomorrow, Kunqian will be proud of me. Thank you, everyone."
🔹

This lovely group of friends were each other's safe haven, and the school brought them together. ( ∩´͈ ᐜ `͈∩)

For our main couple, Lin Mu and Lu Rong have what many couples lack, and that's resilience in the times of hardship. Working hard to remain together. Sharing each other's burdens.

Any angst here I would just describe as meloncholic. Especially in times where Lu Rong wanted to quit school because of his hardship with Meimei. And in this perfect world, the adults actually stood up for their student and sought ways to help him. I'm glad he was able to get a nanny. I'm glad Meimei turned out to be okay. She really was the glue that brought the two protagonist together. 🥹

What a sweet story. The ending was slightly like ending credits zooming by, and that's what we needed. Why think of going into much detail when it's not needed? That's why it was a peaceful and good read. However, something within me wanted more, I just can't quite put my finger on it.

Each person wants to be respected. Each person's hardship wasn't downplayed. Special needs folk will always struggle for equality. They will always struggle to prove themselves in this society of normatives. But with enough warmth and human kindness, they can thrive and shine brighter than any of the rest of us. They can be uplifted. I loved that. It wrapped up each of their stories nicely.

It broke my heart, btw, seeing Cao Zhan cry! His bit broke me! Thank you Jiang Ting for being there for him. 。°(°¯᷄◠¯᷅°)°。

Also, can I just say, I love how An JL, Sunhai, and Jiang Ting became part of the group, protectors of those of special needs! This is what it means to have character development. When you're sad and you need a happy story, this is for you!

Silent Hearts Vol 2

Review: 4.25 but rounding it to 4.5 stars

Vol 2 focuses more on the deepening relationships and the huddles they faced as they work towards graduating high school and progressing to university and adulthood. The character growth here is beautiful as the characters look to overcome the huddles that they face. I also love the wonderful ties of friendship that stayed throughout the whole book and how each of them still “look after one another” despite being in different lives and many miles between them. It portrays the beautiful resilience to friendship and its enduring state.

The pacing was solid and I love how each character is given its form of happy ending. The emotions wrought throughout this book was gentle, complex with a mixture of happiness and sadness mixed into it. The overall ending was beautiful with a lovely message and afternote from the author.

I would recommend this series for anyone looking for a gentle read with beautiful friendships and characters portrayed.

The story progressed just as sweetly as in the first volume, and I love that there was no third act fight or break-up. Sometimes I love reading about people that perfectly click from the beginning.

I really enjoyed this series. Well, it honestly reads more like a singular book split in half. Anyway, we get more emotional scenes in this volume. Lu Rong and Lin Mu's relationship develops more, but that wasn't really the focus of this volume. Most of the conflict in this volume had to do with Lu Rong's increasing anxiety about his grandmother. I also appreciated the way that conflicts were resolved in this story. There was never really that much drama and struggles were often resolved by communication, hard work, or accepting help. I do think the story dragged a bit toward the end, as there were probably 20 pages dedicated to one of the side characters, but this part wasn't bad, I just don't know why it was so long. I would also call this more of a contemporary novel than a romance.

I enjoyed this series! I liked the disability rep and messages from start to finish about equality and kindness. Lin Mu was my favorite character because of his sense of justice and the value he placed on inclusion and respect. I really liked the tension between the two main characters. The romance is quite slow burn, but their friendship and the unease between them makes their dynamic really fun. I felt that the gradual reveals throughout the story of Lu Rong’s despair and negative outlook over his past experiences and just his situation in general were so well written, I felt for him so much T_T Apart from the mcs, I really loved Lin Zhao’s strong and empowered characterization. She didn’t let her circumstances hold her back from pursuing her dreams!

Really pleased the ending followed Lin Mu into university and then had a post time skip bonus chapter showing where everyone was as adults. I like so much when we get more closure to high school set stories than a hs graduation ending! I enjoyed Salad Days by this author too and hoping we’ll get more of their work translated and printed in English!!

Silent hearts is a slice of life high school danmei focused on a group of friends the majority of which are living with a disability, caring for sick family members or are trying to support those with a disability. Lin Mu our MC is an identical twin, who while cross dressing as his hearing impaired sister, begins to form a friendship with a younger classmate Lu Rong. Lu Rong, our ML, is dealing with his own struggles, being completing high school while also being the solo caretaker for his grand mother who is suffering from late stage dementia. This story looked to cover some of the difficulties they face, and how friends can support each other do overcome their challenges.

This is the second half of the series and I enjoyed it more as I read through it. This volume looked to cover a lot more of the later half of the school year including graduation of the older friends including Lin Mu and the development of their relationship as they become adults. I did feel like a number of pieces of this volume could fall into extras territory, not a real chapter but one was giving big "beach episode" vibes. And while I did not hate it, I felt like it was a big difference between these chapters and some of the more serious chapters that followed. I was concerned about a sad ending for a good portion of this volume, especially with some of the topics that were hit on, but was pleasantly surprised when we got a good and hopeful ending which was important to me when reading a softer slice of life danmei. My only disappointment was some of the pairings in this one, or lack thereof. There was a number of potential pairings that we saw the relationship build on as this volume went on, and unfortunately other then Lin Mu's sister, Lin Zhao and Young Master An Jincheng, none of my ships were to sail. But that was a small issue, that can be overcome by the power of my imagination.

Overall this was a 4/5 read for me. I might consider reading this one again in the future If I am needing a softer novel. Anyone who is looking for a more diverse group of people or disability representation should give this one a look. As someone who has lived with a family member with dementia, I feel like they approached the subject involved tastefully and could relate to Lu Rong well! Again if caring for a family member is triggering too you, this may not be the one for you. However if you are looking for a sweet story about the power of friendship helping to support and strength each others ability to overcome difficulties, this is a must read!

“The road ahead may be long and lonely, but no matter what, please never stop, because one day, in this life, you will arrive among the stars.”

description

Silent Hearts Volume 2 picks up the emotional threads of its predecessor and weaves them into a tapestry of growth, resilience, and deepening relationships. The storytelling remains just as captivating, drawing readers into the complexities of the characters’ lives and the choices the must face.
In this volume, the character development is even more pronounced. We see familiar faces evolve as their pasts come back to haunt them and their futures become uncertain. I love how jing Shiu Bian continues to portray characters with authenticity, showcasing their flaws and strengths in equal measure. The growth of friendships is particularly compelling, demonstrating how bonds can be tested yet ultimately strengthened through shared experiences.

I especially love how the author wrote the endings for each character. An Jicheng is one of my favorites; he initially comes off as a “mortal enemy” because of Lin Zhao, but he turns out to be a very reliable, rich, and smart friend. Can I please have a friend like this?
The pacing of this volume is expertly handled, with moments of intense emotion balanced by quieter, reflective scenes. The blend of joy and sorrow keeps you engaged throughout the story.
