They've been called Dames, Babes, Chicks, Foxes... but the ones nobody messed with, were Da Broads.
Hang on for dear life because you are about to ride along with the covert Senile Squad—a bunch of elderly cops who refuse to stop catching crooks. The old boys at the precinct are now joined by retired female cops. “We did everything you guys did, except we wore skirts and pumps.”
Fighting street crime the old-fashioned way is their modus operandi. The Ol’ Blues, led by their cigar-chewing Sarge, take on an international human trafficking ring.
Crime fighting has never been so funny or effective as when these seasoned cops—armed only with walkers, canes, and wheelchairs (and some gross tactics)—take back the streets.
Detective Chris LeGrow, badge number 1557, is a retired member of the Omaha Police Department’s Special Victims Unit. He investigated domestic violence cases that included everything from destruction of property to sexual assault and crimes against vulnerable adults. Formerly he worked for nine years as a Family Teacher at Boys Town. He and his wife, Kara, have nine children and a whole precinct of grandchildren.
Da Broad Squad by Chris LeGrow is the second book in the Adventures of the Old Blues mystery and crime series. A group of wealthy business people is funding a retirement home for retired cops in Omaha, Nebraska. However, this is not just any retirement home. The Old Blues are being equipped to not only work with the community, as everyone believes, but to also help fight street crime. Adding several new characters to the precinct changes the dynamics in the precinct, but not the outcome. An international human trafficking ring has set up shop in Omaha and the Old Blues are determined to take it down. I won't go into more details due to spoilers.
The characters are well developed. Everyone from the Sarge to Lead Officer Agnes Crantz to Boss Nurse Betsy and many others have distinctive personalities that make you root for the retired officers’ success in fighting crime. Having an insider who is the public information officer for the Omaha Chief of Police certainly helps.
They have walkers, canes, wheelchairs, and some gross (and otherwise) surprises for the criminals they encounter. Themes include human trafficking, cartels, gangs, murder, feeling useful, and even a bit of romance. This book was entertaining with some laugh-out-loud moments as well as the more serious aspects of a crime thriller.
This well written book shows the importance of finding something to make us feel productive and useful when we retire. It is imaginative and well executed, if over-the-top at times. The writing is fluid and flows well. The prose is suspenseful and engrossing. I don’t like the title despite understanding why it was used. There are some very humorous and uplifting moments in this book, but there are also some very tense, sad, and disturbing scenes as well. I also believe it helped the book that the author is a retired detective with the Omaha Police Department's Special Victims Unit.
Overall, this was entertaining and funny with well-crafted characters that tackles a dark subject. Chris has embedded humor in his novels, providing some much needed levity to offset some of the more serious and grim aspects of the story. I highly recommend this fast-paced book and I sincerely hope that there are other books coming in this series.
Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own and are not biased in any way. Publication date was August 3, 2021.
Cringeworthy title aside the book was quite endearing and a lot of fun. I read the author’s previous book The Senile Squad and this is similar but with the inclusion of a couple of “broads”. The story is about the residents of the Old Blues Retirement Home which is a care facility for former police officers (old Blues) in Omaha, Nebraska. The place is called the Precinct and is set up like, well, a precinct. The staff thinks it is good for the cold timers to pretend they are still useful but the old blues have everyone fooled as they really do still fight crime the old fashioned way.
They have an insider in the the actual police department, Jake who is the public information officer for the Chief of Police so is across a lot of real police work. Under the building they have their resident geek, Thane, who is a whiz at surveillance gadgetry and there are also a couple of guys who are like James Bond’s Q - they hide tasers in walkers and capsicum spray in walking sticks and so on. So the troops are not completely helpless when out on a mission.
In this story they assist in the rescue of a bunch of young women destined for sex trafficking in Eastern Europe. One of them is Amanda, the granddaughter of Lead Officer Agnes Crantz, one of the new female residents. The old blues vow to take down the whole network so more young women don’t get ensnared. But this is quite a dangerous mission and the oldies get up to all sorts in their determination to stop the bad guys. And these bad guys, the Armenian cartel, are as vicious as they come.
If you fancy a lighthearted, heartwarming story with a few laughs you could do worse than picking up this one. I quite like the idea (being somewhat no longer quite youthful myself) of older folks still being able to make a difference. The old blues are a tough old bunch and don’t shy away from a challenge. In fact they seem to positively relish it. Is the portrayal accurate? I don’t know, I’m not quite that old yet. But the author did work as a police officer in the Omaha Police Department so I’m guessing it’s not totally off the mark. Anyway I did enjoy reading this one. My thanks to the author for a complimentary copy of the book via Netgalley which I reviewed voluntarily and honestly.
Naughty fun, wonderful and nasty characters, good crime solving, and lots of laughter while reading these books! I can see why the scatological humor is too much for some people, but it’s all in good fun! I loved it and hope for More!
The crime element in this story is based on human trafficking and the failure of social services to protect children, a pretty dark backdrop for a humorous cop story. I gave a brief laugh once. I saw the elements meant to be funny, but you'd have to suspend all credulity to find it actually funny and the same elements are repeated over and over (such as bare bottoms, wrinkly or diaper covered). When was the last time you were in a retirement home and hospital gowns were required unless in the end stages of care in the separate wing?
For people who are turned off by crudeness, this isn't the book for you. Bodily noises and human waste references abound. The characters are in no way politically correct. And really, what happens in Brittany's house at the end? Someone has to clean that up!!! Why would anyone do that?!?
Besides the supposed attempts at humor being repeated, I found the author had characters repeating things they'd said before as well. The story needed to be tightened up and I thought it was almost over at 31%. While there were new threads introduced and developed in the remaining 69% I wished the whole thing had been shorter.
I did like the variety of characters and the zoo scene was quite original, so I'm giving it an OK rating. Found out I have the first book from Amazon (this one was from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review), but my experience with Da Broad Squad wasn't so great I want to rush into another set in the same series, but I will probably give it a go when I'm looking for something a little different.
"Sometimes you just have to surrender to the absurd."
Introducing the most improbably effective investigations unit you could possibly imagine. LeGrow brings his unique brand of humor to these tales of the exploits of a special covert police unit - so covert that even the Police Chief doesn't know about it. Chock full of characters you'd love to know, Old Blues - Books One & Two - mystifies, entertains, and keeps you turning pages.
I was waiting for a follow up to the author’s previous book and finally it’s here. It doesn’t start out as interesting as the first but once Sarges daughter comes it moves along nicely. The characters including Boss Nurse are great. The set up of a working police station within a ‘fake station’ which serves as a reminder of being on the job for ‘the geezers’ is amazing. You won’t regret the read Thank you netgalley and the publisher for this arc
After a few pages, I was glued to this book, wanting to turn pages faster while at the same time wanting it to never end! Never have I seen and enjoyed so much clever humor so creatively woven throughout a novel! Chris LeGrow is a gifted writer.
This is the second of these books I’ve read and I’d give them a ten if I could. They are simply pure fun. Old retired cops fighting crime and protecting the innocent in their own special ways. I always hate to have put the book down to deal with the rest of life. If you enjoy geriatric antics read these books,
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book! I was hooked with the first one and was eagerly waiting for this one, I was not disappointed. It's nice to see our police treated with respect in general, and retired elderly police specifically. Love, love, love!! Please write more!
I bought the first book loaned it out and never saw it again. So once again I have read book 1 and now book 2. Would recommend to anyone who likes good well written novels. Full of twists, turns, surprises. Funny, serious. I hope there will be more added to read. Just remember, never underestimate an older person.
I friggin' loved it! I never imagined that it could be as good as Senile, but it may be even better!!! Love these books.... This author really gets the: medical, police, aging, and flat out old handicapped folks who can still contribute! CHRIS LEGROW!! WRITE MORE BOOKS!!!
I was attracted by the blurb and it's engrossing but the plot didn't keep my attention and fell flat. Not my cup of tea. Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
Genuine comedy and amazing characters. Have to say that this book is hilariously funny with a diverse well crafted characters that lets your imagination fly and and immerse yourself in this unique retirement house with the old blues in charge.
Never underestimate a woman!! These ladies used to be cops. But no one told them they couldn't still be! Look out here they come!! You will be amazed and amazed at what these retired cops get into! Hold on to your hats for the wild ride!!! I loved it!!!
I felt that the book was a little too long, but overall, it was action packed the entire time and I loved the idea of retired cops all being in the same retirement home and still solving crimes!
This book brings real life crime stories (sex trafficking) to life and how it goes unnoticed all around the world. 😭. I enjoyed the Ol’ Blues characters in story.
