Inspired by the true stories of women who served in France during World War I, Sadie is a sweet romance filled with courage, hope, and lasting love.
She yearns for far-flung adventures. He longs for the home he’s found in her heart. Will a world at war tear them apart, or draw them closer together? For most of her life, Doctor Sadie Thorsen has imagined seeing the world on grand adventures. When America joins the war raging across the world in 1917, it seems her dreams are about to come true. She travels overseas as a contracted physician, eager to do her part to help the war effort. A hopeless romantic with a bit of sarcasm thrown in for good measure, Shanna Hatfield is a best-selling author of clean romantic fiction written with a healthy dose of humor.
In addition to blogging and eating too much chocolate, she is completely smitten with her husband, lovingly known as Captain Cavedweller.
Shanna creates character-driven romances with realistic heroes and heroines. Her historical westerns have been described as “reminiscent of the era captured by Bonanza and The Virginian” while her contemporary works have been called “laugh-out-loud funny, and a little heart-pumping sexy without being explicit in any way.”
She is a member of Western Writers of America, Women Writing the West, and Romance Writers of America.
In war time, every human emotion is supercharged, especially in love and romance. And so it is with the saga of Sadie and Harley John. Both of them grew up and thrived under their adoptive parents, Marnie and Lars Thorsen in Pendleton, Oregon. Marnie and Harley John chose each other out as children and their love for each other has grown with them into adulthood. Enter the specter of World War I and how it affects all of the residents of Pendleton, especially these two. Sadie has always wanted to become a doctor, a difficult feat for any woman in the early 1900’s, and Harley John has always had the proclivity for fixing things, thus his skill with the newly developing internal combustion engine. The story is a sequel to the author’s much loved Pendleton Petticoats series and highlights the loving bonds that hold families together, by birth or adoption. The author writes in a semi epistolary style with many letters revealing emotions, news, and surprises. It is a journey from Pendleton to New York City and to the war front in France. There are several shocking coincidental moments which the reader might call “God-winks,” or almost divine encounters. Sadie, with her full throttle ambitious personality, gets her lifelong wish for adventure and laid back Harley John does his best to be an American patriot soldier and once again be united with his only love, Sadie. For those readers who are not familiar with the author’s Pendleton Petticoats series, the array of characters in this sequel may be a bit bewildering but they do nothing to interfere with the thrilling events of the story. As usual the author’s historical research is impeccable and thorough, as it is with all of her works. This might be a good time to recommend reading through the Pendleton Petticoats series in chronological order. No modern author plays with the emotions of love, family, children, suspense, longing, animals and humor like Shanna Hatfield. This one’s another winner from her pen.
This book made me laugh and cry, mostly cry, but in a good way. I loved Sadie, she was determined and brave and always willing to put others before herself. I liked that it was very descriptive and informative, made me see just how much those that fought in the war really risked everything for their country and their loved ones. Harley John was a great character, selfless, faithful, brave, and smart. I liked that he didn't let his bad circumstances change who he was. It was great to see old familiar characters from the Pendleton series.
What an incredible book. Shanna Hatfield has written many books that captured my heart. Sadie, however, is her best book to date. This was such a beautiful love story set during WWI. Sadie and Harley John grew up as best friends, sweethearts, and soulmates. When both enter into the war to help do their part in fighting the Germans in France, neither knew if their lives would ever be the same, much less return home to Pendleton, Oregon!
Ms. Hatfield’s research in the brutal, bloody war was phenomenal.
Faith, Hope, and Love is truly the theme of this amazing book.
A beautiful love story on the frontline of a brutal war.
this is a wonderful story, young love , what it was like to leave and be a doctor and becoming a soldier. then crossing the ocean and working endless hours trying to save the wounded . then we are taken behind the fighting lines and see what the men went through. some pages are sad but then there are some that you will laugh out loud . like where Sadie sees a goat and her kid and know that the lady she is visiting could use the milk from the goat and sends a boy tothe house for a rope then she ropes the goat and brings them back to the house but the goat did not go willingly. we get to see that the families came to see sadie off but also Harley john when he was leaving for war. looking forward to thenext book if you have read any of Shanna's books or evern if you have not you will want to read this one i was given a copy of the book but this is an honest review.
A very well researched story that entails World War 1. A determined young woman and the honorable gentleman who she loves. It is a romance,a history lesson and a return to old friends in previous tales of Pendleton. Couldn't put it down.
Loved this one! This is probably my favorite of all the Pendleton books. It has a little more “meat” to it and not so much repetition of the other books.
You know what I mean, right? The others all follow a standard outline: new person comes to Pendleton, sees main character, they immediately fall in love but can’t be together for some silly reason, then some crisis happens and they realize they can’t live without each other, they get married and live happily ever after.
Sadie’s story is different. Yes, it’s still love at first sight, (at 8 and 10 years old), but at least they grow up together and their relationship grows with them. There’s still the requisite lustful glances and restraint from passion (it seems Shanna only knows how to write one kind of romantic scene), but I have to say it feels different in this book because their love feels so much deeper and more real than the insta-love in all the other books.
Also, I loved the setting in this book. The other Pendleton books are light and flighty and fun, which is great, but the grittiness of this one adds a depth to the story and the characters that I thoroughly enjoyed.
The only thing that would have made it better in my opinion is if Harley John actually had lasting effects from his injuries because really, I get tired of all the perfect bodies and gorgeous features of these kinds of romance novels. It would be refreshing if ordinary looking, hardworking, oh, and not rich, people fell in love. (Both Marnie and Harley end up with money that they didn’t know they had!)
Why do I keep reading? Shanna knows how to write. She researches her history thoroughly. (I love her author’s notes). The romance and language are clean; I don’t have to skip pages of sexual descriptions. Her characters are believable and show growth. And her books are just fun to read!

Sassy Sadie and Hoedown Harley John are just irresistible!
He pulled her braids and stole her ribbon, so she blackened his eye and got it back! Sadie was always tough, but then she had to be with no mother, an outlaw father and having to raise her little brother on her own. Harley John has an abusive, drunken father and is too afraid and ashamed to stay at home. He'd rather live in a shack and fend for himself. Sadie denies her feelings for Harley John, even though she goes out of her way to make him seem part of her own adoptive family. Harley John fell in love with Sadie the first time he seen her on the playground and knows beneath that tough exterior is a gentle heart and spirit. She's grown up and become his beautiful "ladybug" and he's her handsome JJ, short for just John, wanting to do omit the name Harley. She's followed her dream to become a Doctor, while he's been drafted and will be sent to the front lines to fight in the great war. Though previously turned down for her request to serve overseas, her last plea is granted and she finds herself in France, serving as a civilian doctor. They haven't seen each other for years. Can their love survive being thousands of miles apart? Will God provide a miracle for them to find each other in a war-torn country overseas, if they can both manage to stay alive...? Read this sweet romance filled with plenty of action and adventure! You can first meet young Sadie and her brother Noah in Marnie, Book 4 of the Pendleton Petticoats series. I highly recommend reading them all and in the right order for the best experience! The author, Shanna Hatfield doesn't disappoint!
Sadie By Shanna Hatfield I have to say that this story of two of the second generation of the Pendleton citizens, sure know how to live life and live-in danger as well. Sadie Thorsen has really grown up as she is ready to go to college or in her case it’s off to Medical School. Her distracted beau, Harley John Hobbs is staying behind in Pendleton. Once she is a full-fledged doctor, she plans on going to France to patch of American and Allied soldiers in WWI. Harley John ends up enlisting in the war and he too is going to France but will eventually be at the front lines. He doesn’t know she is going until he misses her graduation when she is now a doctor and he is in basic training. She only came back home for Christmas one time in four years and now she on the sister ship of the Titanic and headed to England, then France. This is a really good story that will make you laugh and cry and get mad at the author when you think she is ruining a major character when injured in the war. Okay, I forgive her but she was close to it. I guarantee you will love this story and love these two young people who really make a difference in the lives of others. I received a copy from the author and was not asked to write this review, but I loved this story and wanted to.
Sadie is Shanna Hatfield's best work - historical, gut wrenching, with a touch of humor to diffuse the horrors of WW1. This avid reader could relate to the characters. Sadie, as a physician, since my German mom experienced the horrors of WW2 as a Red Cross nurse. Harvey John being conscripted to serve - the reason my Great Uncle Otto left Volynia (Russia / Ukraine) in 1914 because he would be conscripted into the Russian army. As a high school German and English teacher, I have read many WW1 novels, like All is Quiet on the Western Front and watched movies like Joyeux Noel. As a young child, crossing the Atlantic Ocean in 1955 and being sea sick - Shanna Hatfield does a superb job describing ocean travel. Great Uncle Otto came to the states in 1914 on the Adriatic (a White Star line ship). As a child, I like lemon drops. Goats are fascinating. As an Oma to a preschooler, Little Faustin gripped my heart. Now I understand, why we had Cootie Catchers at school in the late 1950s, my sons and grandsons called them Fortune Tellers. Thank you Shanna Hatfield for page turning, gut wrenching, well researched, stay in my heart and soul read.
This riveting book kept me awake well into the night as I had to finish it. I enjoy books set in WWII and loved this one, it was a really tasteful but honest representation of what war was like for soldiers and medical staff. I loved the commitment shown by Sadie and Harley John and their ability to see the positives in their situations. I could so relate to Sadie - tenacious, stubborn, committed, hard working and passionate. Harley John has loved her since he first met her and is her biggest supporter. He puts her needs ahead of his and let's her chase her dreams. Together they have a great romance and deep love that overcomes all barriers. Shanna Hatfield has also set up several other books in this new series … will Molly and Friday get together and what about those troublesome twins?
Sadie becomes a doctor & then serves in France caring for soldiers & some civilians. She makes a difference in the lives of a small boy & others. She brings joy to her patients reading letters from her family while providing some reminders of home such as Lifesavers & gum. Sometimes it's the little things that make a difference.
Harley John becomes a soldier & in time is sent to France. He comes across as a young Gary Cooper in the movie Sergent York as he makes a difference saving lives & being a good soldier.
Yes they both find each other at times in France, but as any soldier knows the separatiion is long & hard.
Sadie and Harley John have known each other since they were kids. Now they are adults and both head off to Europe during WWI.
Much of the story talks about war things, both from the doctor's POV and the soldier's POV. We also see how they react in those stressful situations. Those happenings show their character so much better than reading a list of traits. They each do some pretty amazing things but aren't Mary Sue or Gary Stu. We get to see weakness and the fears that spur them on.
Oh, there were tears of heartbreak and tears of joy. Not to mention moments of wanting to smack someone upside the head.
A love that survives years apart, kept close by letters. Harley John urges Sadie to live out her dream to be a doctor even though it will keep them apart for 5 years. During this time Harley John is drafted but he keeps writing to his dear Sadie and the folks back home. This tale draws you into the horrors of war, the men who serve and also the women. Sadie is a doctor in the midst of the war and treating soldiers. Will they ever see each other again. Such a heartfelt story. I received a complimentary copy and my review is voluntary.
I laughed, I cried, I fell in love with the spunk Sadie had. I fell in love with the way an everlasting love between Harley John and Sadie. I mourned and cried when he went missing, knowing the ache so deep in Sadie's soul. By the end of this story I was crying as I rejoiced for a love that is so sweet. The story doesn't just focus on Sadie and Harley John, you get to catch up on all the friends (characters) from Pendleton. This is like reading about the family that lives across the country. Love it!
This is one of the best books I’ve ever read.Already being familiar with the supporting characters and knowing the main characters too made it like you were reading about old friends. The book was easy to just dive right in and go.I couldn’t put it down but had to a couple times.I can not wait for the next book.If you haven’t read about The Pendleton Petticoats read that great series about Sadies family and friends it’s a wonderful series that I adored every book.Shanna Hatfield has written another beautiful page turner.
Wow!! What a wonderful love story of two people who have been in love since they were children. Even though they are separated for years, they write letters and their love grows stronger in spite of the distance. When WWI brings them both to France..him as a soldier and her as a doctor, their love keeps them strong and they never lose their faith. It was so great to see all the characters from Pendleton again and their lives and support help bring comfort and encouragement to the wounded in the hospital. Shanna has done it again writing a beautiful story with characters you feel like you know
I loved Sadie. I didn't want it to end and found myself trying to read slower at the end just to keep it going a little longer! I loved reading all about the little details of the war, the small joys, the delayed/misplaced letters, the camaraderie between soldiers, and then nurses. And I can't help but mention that I also loved going back to Pendleton and revisiting some old favourites! The Pendleton Petticoat series was how I discovered Shanna Hatfield, and to now have the Pendleton Promises is so exciting! Sadie is such a sweet romance, and I can't wait to read more in the series! :)
I was so happy to see that Sadie & Harley John got their story!!! They are the sweetest & their eternal love & devotion to one another is inspiring!! I spent the prologue & all of the first 2 chapters with tears streaming down my face. This is probably one of my fa favorite stories & love seeing all the other Pendleton favorites from previous stories!!! I think Ben & Brett need stories!! Also, WHAT HAPPENED TO FRIDAY?! He needs a story… maybe in a book titled “Molly”!!!! 😬
"Sadie" is another heartwarming book by Shanna Hatfield. She writes Historical Romance that brings calm to the otherwise chaotic world we live in. Her books are a great way to spend quiet time alone while letting yourself be transported to another time. Another place where life was appreciated amongst the characters Hatfield writes about. She has several series of books that are written from her heart. You can't go wrong with any of her books. I just purchased "Henley" book two in the Pendleton Promises series and can't wait for it to arrive.
A beautifully written love story set at the time of WWI. Sadie has always wanted to be a doctor and after she achieves that goal, she volunteers to help during the war and ends up in France. This about the time Harley John, the love of her life ends up there and is in the army. Wonderful descriptions throughout the story bring the war and the country to life. I laughed and cried throughout the story. There are several shocking coincidences that seem like God was behind them. A very sweet ending too.
This book had me ignoring the housework that needed to be done yesterday, and kept me laying in bed this morning instead of getting up for early morning mass so I could finish it. I loved these characters and their strength, devotion, and perseverance over the years of being separated by war. I hope Sadie and Harley John are recurring characters in the next book about Molly and that this is a many book series by Shanna Hatfield. If you're on the fence about purchasing this book...buy it...you won't regret it!
Thoroughly enjoyed this story although it pulled at the emotions. I loved how Harley John and Sadie remained true to each other throughout the years and experiences they had separately. I love the relevant inclusion of the events of history at the time and how they played within the characters lives. I would like to know what happened to Friday Fitzpatrick/Molly and the Rawlings' twins.
“Harley John loved Sadie so much he would do anything for her, even if it meant setting her free to explore a whole new world without him.” Sadie has always desired adventure and to become a doctor. Harley John has always encouraged her to follow her dreams. After she becomes a doctor, she fights to be allowed to join the medical group going to France. All Harley John wants is that someday Sadie comes back to him.
*I received this book for free for my unbiased review.
This is one of the best books I have read. Picture a female doctor during World War I wanting to serve her country. Female doctors were not allowed to do this in World War I as members of the military. Determination and grit filled Sadie and they realized they didn’t want to turn her away. There is more than one way to skin a cat! Great historical elements in this book. Grab a tissue – you are going to need it. Fantastic job, Shanna!
I am a bit disappointed the issue with Rawlings twins wasn't finished. I do hope this issue is being considered in a future book, or maybe I haven't read it yet. I am so glad I came across Shanna Hatfield's books. If there is anyone reading this who knows how to get this authors name into the education system, I am sure these books might help encourage our young people to learn more about our pasts.
A childhood sweethearts find love during World War 1.
Loved being back with this author again. Sadie and Harley John story was sweet. Sadie was a little spitfire. Harley John was her hero and protector. They both felt to be apart of the war. I thought many times Harley John wouldn't make it back to Sadie. But the prayers of others and lots of angels brought him back to her. Looking forward to Molly and Friday story. I still have to read Marnie and Lars story.
Here's the story of a girl named Sadie who dreams of adventure and some true love. And here's the story of a man named Harley John who waits patiently for that true love to return. It's a story of war, obstacles, sacrifice and coming of age. It is also a story you can't and won't want to put down. Sit back and read awhile, you won't be disappointed.
I really enjoyed Sadie and Harley John's story, It was a great, scary and so Sweet. My favorite part was when Sadie was walking in the vineyards, and she came up one side, a man on the other side, I feel like jumping up and down, cause I knew who it was, it was perfect, Thank you, Shanna Hatfield. P.S.I think Molly and Friday need a Book, too.
A terrific WW1 story of a lifetime love. Follows history quite well. Sadie Jane and HarleyJohn grew up together. He loved her enough to set her free to get her education to become a doctor, hoping she would come back to him. While he was waiting for her, he joined the Army to fight in WW1. When they met again in France it was as if they didn’t have years lost between them. Wonderful faith filled story. Grab a coffee, chocolates and a box of tissues and have plenty of time to read.
