Love Mishaps #1

Maid of Dishonor

Rate this book
Samantha Quinn
Baseball lover. Plant mama. Eternal friend zone dweller.

I know exactly three things:
1) My heart will forever belong to my best friend, Carter.
2) Carter's heart will never belong to me.
3) I will therefore die alone, surrounded by my houseplants, probably old and grouchy like my eighty-two-year-old landlady, Winifred.
But now Carter's cousin wants my help planning her wedding, while Carter wants my help stopping it. How am I supposed to both plan and sabotage a wedding at the same time? How do I talk to Carter about weddings all day without my heart fracturing? And how, how, how do I ditch this stupid friend zone once and for all?

Carter Ellis
P.E. teacher. Baseball coach. Also, attractive. Very, very attractive.

I am not secretly in love with my best friend. I absolutely am not. That would be stupid and reckless and a terrible idea all around. I swore I would never fall in love, and that's not going to change now.
Except...one tiny little kiss has all sorts of feelings rising in my chest. Feelings I was certain I buried a long time ago. But it doesn't matter; I refuse to give in. I will laugh with her, talk with her, and dry her tears, but I will not fall in love with Samantha Quinn.

“What can I get for you today?” Little Miss Waitress asks. Her voice is breathy and high pitched, and it grates on my nerves. She lowers her lashes seductively and says, “Please feel free to ask for anything.”
Wow. She’s just going for it.
I clear my throat loudly, because that’s quite enough of that. I’d rather not vomit before I’ve even eaten. “I’d like the twelve-count wings, please,” I say. “Buffalo sauce.” I glance at Carter, who’s still giving her that stupid little smirk. Then I look back to the waitress. “And he’ll just have a salad. He’s been having diarrhea all day; anything else might set him off again.”

When I first started this, I thought I'd found a new favorite.
It seemed funny, fresh, the pining was top notch and the main characters were really cute; alas for me, it didn't last long.
It got boring and quite unrealistic pretty soon, and I found myself struggling to finish it even though it was as light and short as clean (bleh!) rom-coms get.
Two stars for the beginning and because Carter remained pretty coherent in his views about love and marriage even when he and Sam eventually and inevitably got together.

Estuvo bien cute.

⭐️⭐️.5 “There’s something, I don’t know, steadying? Something steadying about spending 30 minutes of my day looking inward rather than outward. 30 minutes of clearing out all the noise in my mind and descending into the stillness of just existing.” All I can say is that I’m really glad I listened to the audiobook version, that part made it more enjoyable to say the least.

Sam and Carter have been best friends for years, both work in the same school, and yet they are both secretly pining for one another as to not destroy the friendship (a tale as old as time). They have much in common- baseball, their choice of restaurants, and their need to stop Carter's cousins wedding Maia. Maia is pregnant and set to marry a man that seems to have no positive traits. Maia needs this relationship to work as to provide her unborn child with the life she deserved. Therefore, the two set up a scheme to put a stop to the wedding. With a meddling landlady thrown into the mix, perhaps this is the couples chance of a happily ever after.

I will say that the audiobook made this quite the experience, as it just really reinforced the way I felt about the characters. I will start at the start, conveniently. I think it was the first scene pretty much where the duo are in a restaurant and Carter is making "eyes" towards the waitress. Sam then goes on to talk pretty negatively about this woman, of whom she has never spoken to, just because she is making eye contact with Carter. I really didn't like how thats we were introduced to Sam's character. Also what is it about people making others feel bad and act with a vengeance the second they have their boobs out when they're jealous. Not only is it actually a fabulous spectator sport, but I really don't understand why it needs to be made a point of, or even why that would make someone less of a person? This countered with the fact that in the next scene, she makes a point to Carter to prove she has a "womanly" figure. Why. Why. Why. It just really confused me, and I guess, rubbed me the wrong way.

Carter, I did actually enjoy his character at the start, I just felt like he was down to earth and very supportive of his cousin. Which I loved. However, this was up until the point where I found out what happened with his ex-girlfriend Melissa. Then for me my opinion on him just went downhill. There are mentions of anxiety and mental health with techniques as to what they do to help, which I really liked that this was included. The final thing that made me rate this book so low is that they are both pretty aware of their feelings towards each other, they have been in previous relationships before, and neither were particularly subtle about their attraction. So an open conversation before around the 94% mark would have made sense to me. Thank you netgalley for the arc!

Friends to lovers- such a great trope. Gotta love it when someone is finally able to get out of the friend zone! Everyone thinks it will ruin friendships but usually they make the couples that end up together. Super cute.

🌀Synopsis
Sam and Carter have been friends forever and Sam is absolutely in love with him. He’s not into her though so she’s determined to let her feelings go.
The thing is- he is into her. So into her in fact he wears a rubber band to snap him out of thoughts of her. He’d never tell her though, he doesn’t want to lose the friendship.
When Carter’s cousin announces her plan to marry her deadbeat boyfriend- the two hatch a plan. They will agree to be part of the wedding but they are going to secretly try to sabotage it.
All their scheming just brings them closer until Sam finally confesses her feelings. Sure that Carter doesn’t feel the same way, she pushes him away. He waits patiently to tell her how he truly feels.

My full review can be read here: bit.ly/3EI7Ln0

“No, look, Sam. Look.” He closes the distance between us in one large step, grabbing both of my hands and cradling them in his own. He sounds nothing short of desperate as he goes on,“I think—I think there’s a place inside my soul where you’re supposed to live, Sam, and when you’re not there, I’m just—I’m just broken. I’m empty without you."

My heart was exploding when that part happened. 😱🥺

Before the book was even over, I was more than ready to give it five stars...and once I finished the book I had NO disappointments. I absolutely ADORE Gracie's books! Her leading guys are always swoony as heck and the leading ladies are always incredibly relatable. I'm pretty sure I've said it before, but Gracie is definitely one of my all-time favorite authors. Y'all, she is a ROMANCE QUEEN. 😭😍

I have a LOT of points to share, so here we go...

1: The rubber band.

2: Coach. Ellis.

3: Dudeeeee I hateeeee Chet so much.

4: Gahhhh I’m so mad at Carter for not wanting to fall in love lol (I honestly understand but, BUDDY, you’re already in love).

5: The whole convo about Sam thinking she won’t get married.

6: Ugh, the sea monster.

6.5: BUT THE TALK AFTER THE SEA MONSTER.

7: “Is it worth it?”

8: Peachhhh shampoo.

9: All these almosts are killing me.

10: Pool partyyyy.

10.5: I suddenly hate cannonballs.

11: Okay, the dress freak out and peanut butter cake.

12: The telenovela scene.

13: When they have the talk.

14: His weird dream lollll.

15: Sunflowers and a goldfish.

16: “My eyes” swooooon.

17: Castlewood.

18: I loved how they talked about everything.

19:

As far as content goes: No language! Mild suggestive material/innuendos. There was no on-page sex, but it was talked about/implied between different characters. Carter had some commitment struggles as a result of fear and grief (which was understandable). Sam struggled with the aftermath of a car accident she was in. Sam had an unwanted advance happen early on in the book, but it was addressed and dealt with. Maya’s fiancé sucked lol, there’s no nice way to say it. I wasn’t triggered by all of his horrible bad habits, but some readers could be. I don't remember anything else?? I would describe the book as a mild "PG-13 romance movie."

Ya know, one of my favorite things about friends-to-more romances, is just getting to see how well they know each other. I love learning about their little habits and routines from the other person’s POV. The friendship (and eventual romantic relationship) between Sam and Carter was so wholesome. Absolutely freaking adorable.

This was such a sunshine, feel-good story; and if you couldn't tell already, I LOVED IT!! There were some sadder/more serious parts, BUT you can’t have rainbows without rain...and the romance wasn't overshadowed at all.

The book was great and lots of fun, so you should definitely add it to your TBR!!!! Andddd I’m beyondddddd excited for the next one! (Then again, I’m always excited when Gracie announces a new book. 😏)

This was an adorable friends-to-lovers romance with the added fun of wedding sabotage. Best friends for fifteen years, Sam and Carter know each other inside and out. When the two team up to convince a future bride to cancel her doomed marriage, their own buried feelings start to shine.

With zero interest in a long-term relationship, thinking love can only destroy your life, Carter was a gentle soul that simply needed a little push. He was such a thoughtful friend, always there when Sam needed him—I loved seeing him attempt to resist his attraction to her.

Not only was their banter great, but their inner dialogue was really funny, too! The lengths these two go to ruin a wedding was a little silly, but overall I still had a fun time. This also had a touch of emotion, with Sam guilt-ridden from an accident that left her mom disabled. I really liked the setup for book two, so I am definitely interested in reading it upon release!

DNF at 50%. Ok sooooo. This book has some issues. Even tho it’s not as bad as some other rom books I’ve read, it’s still has content I’d rather not read about.
I don’t like reading about girls making sure their cha chas “behave” while in the presence of your guy best friend.
I don’t like the focus on cha chas this MC had. The way she wanted to make obvious she was curvy and seductive so her guy best friend would fall in love with her 😑.
There’s a characters who is in an manipulative relationship and she bets her live on the horoscope. The story revolves around creating signs from the “universe” to stop the wedding- involving more horoscopes and tarot cards.
Then we have the lusty thoughts here and there and the “checking each other out” and I wouldn’t mind that so much but we get inside their heads and that’s when it gets uncomfortable.
How it feels, smells, and tastes, if you get my meaning.
There is also an open nature relationship which basically means they are going to get married and still go out with other people.
Then there mention of strip poker (I didn’t even know what the heck was that) between elder people.
A drunk dude and yeahhhh.
And if it wasn’t for all that I also kinda got bored 😐.

I love a good friends-to-love, since that's my own love story, and this one was great! Carter and Sam have been besties for years and now, change just might be on the horizon.

I listened to this one and appreciated the alternating points of view. I love planting myself into each character's head to get the full picture. It's so hard to know if staying in the friend zone is for the best or if it's time to take things to the next level, because if it doesn't work out, there's no going back. The inner (and outer) struggles were sweet, real, and hilarious.

Loves:

*Carter and the chocolate chips
*WINIFRED!! The quirky, elderly neighbor is the best!
*Flowers/plants
*Planting "signs from the universe"
*Baseball
*Jealousy (including a neon green-eyed baby)

This story had a second tangent with Carter's cousin, Maya and Chad/Chet, which added some drama, angst, and healthy doses of humor trying to get that name right.

This was an enjoyable story from start to finish and I'm excited to dive into the rest of the series.

Content: some talk of periods; unwed/unplanned pregnancy and open relationship; mild+ romance/innuendo

Where to start. This book was so funny and perfectly on brand for any romcom lover. I love this authors style of writing, especially how she writes her MC’s. I absolutely loved the inner dialogue- both main character’s inner dialogues had me laughing out loud continuously throughout this book. I could feel the tension immensely throughout and I really can’t recommend this one enough for the romcom lover peeps! If you like Emma St. Clair, Sarah Adams then this is one you MUST add to your list.

I would say this book is clean, but it’s definitely farther in the PG-13 range and I would recommend for older teens and up. Thanks to the author for the copy. All thoughts in this review are my own.

This is just a case of "its not you, its me" I'm afraid. Friends-to-lovers is one of my least favorite tropes. I liked Carter and Samantha, but felt the whole story was a bit repetitive of them both secretly being in love with each other, checking each other out, but not brave enough to do anything about it. For the entire book. I know a lot of people love this trope so I'd recommend it to those who love this kind of storyline. It is well written and has some cute moments, but was just a miss for me. I would definitely read more from this author though.

A quick and cute romcom. I was expecting more wedding hijinks, but this was really in the pre-planning stages - but still fun. Sam and Carter have a solid friendship (with lots of mutual pining) that was great to read about. The beginning was a bit slow and Maya really frustrated me but the story grew on me the more I read

Sam and Carter have been best friends for so long. Both have feelings for the other but don't want to jeopardize the friendship by saying anything.

This is the exact kind of Awwww book I need to get me out of a slump. This friends to lovers romance was so light and cute. I absolutely loved both Sam and Carter and was cheering their happy ending on throughout the whole book. How is this my first book from this author? I can not wait to read more!

This is a case of bookstagram made me do it. I’ve been seeing this cover all over social media for awhile and decided to give it a try when I saw the audiobook available on NetGalley. I also enjoy a good friends to lovers trope. I found this to be a fun romcom filled with humor, angst, and a story line that definitely pulls you in.

Sam and Carter have been best friends since Jr. High and Sam has been in love with Carter since then. They do everything together, teach at the same school, play baseball together, and spend an inordinate amount of time with each other. But, Carter has one hang up, he never wants to get married even though he’s secretly in love with Sam. When Carter’s cousin Maya enlists his and Sam’s help in planning a wedding to her loser boyfriend, Carter and Sam plan to sabotage it while planning it at the same time.

I enjoyed how the narrators brought this story to life. They each captured the characters so well. Sam is a sensitive soul who treats her houseplants like pets and cries at the drop of a hat. Carter is a thoughtful best friend who’s always there to offer chocolate and support when Sam’s upset. Their inner monologues were hilarious and I enjoyed the way they finally get over their fears and admit what the reader sees the whole time, that they’re perfect for each other.

I had a hard time with the side story of Maya and Chet/Chad. The only reason Maya wants to marry Chet is because she’s pregnant. But, the dirtbag Chet wants an open marriage. I can understand Maya’s desperation, but I couldn’t agree with her choices. Sam and Carter instead of knocking some sense into Maya resort to strange wedding venues, tarot cards, and fake horoscopes to try to convince the superstitious Maya to dump Chet. While this scenario offers plenty of laughs, I just didn’t like this aspect of the story.

While there were laugh out loud moments, I found this book to be a little too crude for my taste. I don’t enjoy it when women talk so openly about their menstrual cycles with their guy friends. It just seems a little too personal and I don’t necessarily want to hear or read about it either. Sam’s also a little obsessed with Carter checking out other women’s assets so to speak and wanting him to check out her own.

The story did draw me in and I had to listen to the end to find out what happened. I’d definitely be willing to try another romcom by this author. I’d recommend it to true romcom fans who don’t mind mild innuendo, some crude humor, and a few mild swears. I’d consider it clean/closed door. I received an advanced audiobook copy from NetGalley. All opinions are completely my own and voluntarily given.

I have been dying to read this book since I read the synopsis and let me just say, it didn’t disappoint.

Sam is a plant mom, an avid reader, and one of the funniest heroines I’ve read. She is a perfectionist and wears her heart on her sleeve. Carter is kind, protective, and scared of commitment.

Their chemistry is fantastic. I love their banter and how well they know each other. The problem I sometimes see with best friend tropes is the underdeveloped history, but not in this one. I understood and felt their pent up desire for each other.

There were heavier themes in this book that make Gracie’s books more than just a swoony romance. It was such a fun book and I cannot recommend it enough.

3.5 rounded up.

Best friends team up to help break up a friend's doomed wedding not realizing they're both secretly in love with one another in this sweet, dual POV, kissing only romance. Full of heart and humor and some hilarious antics, this was an entertaining listen. I was a little confused by the ending, it seemed to just stop abruptly without a good resolution (maybe my copy was missing an epilogue?). Heads up for that but hopefully it was just an error. Otherwise this is perfect for fans of authors like Sarah Adams or Emma St. Clair. Many thanks to NetGalley and the author for my advance audio copy in exchange for my honest review!

I absolutely loved this friends to more romcom!! It was amazing! Sam and Carter have been friends since high school, and they both have good reasons for why they don’t want to risk their friendship by getting romantically involved. It was great to see them work to overcome those reasons, and I loved their friendship!

One of the things I enjoy most about the friends to more trope is that the couple really knows each other. Other tropes can be fun because the reader gets to watch the characters learn about each other as they get to know each other better. But in the friends trope, the couple already knows so many little details about each other, and I love that!

There were so many things about this book that I absolutely adored: Sam and Carter (all the heart eyes for both of them! 😍😍😍), the perfect romcom voice, the hilarious situations, the unique plot line, and the way it kept me laughing and swooning are my top reasons for loving it! Any time I had to put the book down, I was thinking about it, and I dove back into it every chance I got because it was just so good! I highly recommend this hilarious and swoony romcom by Gracie Ruth Mitchell! 😍

5/5 stars!

Content:
No swearing and clean romance
One side character believes in astrology, and Sam and Carter use her belief to try to help her with a decision. It is made clear that they don’t believe in astrology, but I still didn’t care as much for this part of the plot. It didn’t lessen my enjoyment of the novel though!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I liked this much better than the first book by the author I read. The romance was a lot better. Humorous banter and flirty moments. Some super soft, cinnamon roll scenes and wow did I flat out swoon at the confession at the end. All good things in my book!

What I struggled most with (and was able to block out somewhat) was the utterly ridiculous side plot. I know it was there to push the romance forward but it was SO UNBELIEVABLE. There’s no way Maya would honestly consider marrying someone clearly horrid. Just, no. That too me out of the story every time it was brought up.

Otherwise, solid, sweet contemporary romance. It was quick, had the HEA I always adore and I found myself smirking and laughing at some of the antics. I look forward to what the author will write next.

Overall audience notes:
- Contemporary Romance
- Language: none
- Romance: kisses/make-outs
- Trigger/Content Warnings: side character who’s being cheated on

everything that makes friends to lovers the best

The absolute perfect balance of everything that makes friends to lovers the best romance trope of all. A perfect mix of longing, angst, fighting for the status quo, then tension and awkwardness when the balance is upset. Could not put it down!

Thank you NetGalley and Dreamscape for the audiobook of this ARC, to listen and review.

It was a cutesy, completely clean little romcom. The rhythm of the FMC’s voice was not my favorite, though I got more used to it as the book progressed. There were some brief moments of past trauma, but all in all a very quick (290 pages) and easy listen. 3 stars - 0 spice.

Maid of Dishonor
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Genre: Romance
Author: Gracie Ruth Mitchell
GR: 3.78

I requested a digital advanced readers copy from NetGalley and Dreamscape Media and providing my opinion voluntarily and unbiased.

My Thoughts: This is the first book in the Love Mishaps series. It follows two best friends as they work on the wedding for Carter’s cousin, even though it’s a wedding that should not happen in the first place. Through the course of planning, each best friend secretly falls in love with the other, even more so. This follows the tropes of friends to lovers. This is a clean closed romance novel with humor.

The story is narrated in a dual perspective from Samatha and Carter, one of my favorite type of narrations. Sam was kind, caring, and wore her heart on her sleeve. Carter is not the commitment type, kind, and extremely protective of Sam. The characters were well developed, with depth, amazing witty banter, awesome inner banter, chemistry, and the MCs just clicked in so many ways. The author’s writing style was complex, crisp, fun, and humorous. The supporting characters, like Maya, were great; I was frustrated with her at the beginning but grew to love her at the end.

The narrators were great and had amazing voice variation. The narrators just have this ability to pull you in and immerse you into the story. I have read the first two books in the series and LOVED them both. Very cute, romantic, funny, and just enjoyable. This book just made me happy and feel good. I would highly recommend this book and the series.
