A fascinating look into the first steps to civilization, as the community work together to build what they need to make agriculture work for their survival. Even more wonderful is their first contact with the natives, hinting at both the positives and negatives of things to come.
But, one can't simply ignore the formidable final chapter of this volume. What a tearjerker!
What does it take to become a man with no enemies?
With Kentaro Miura gone and Takehiko Inoue unlikely to pick up Vagabond again, Vinland Saga remains the only torchbearer of the seinen Big Three. Makoto Yukimura’s semi-fictional historical account of the socio-political condition of Norway and early Norse settlement in America feels like an epic of its own kind. Berserk and Vagabond mostly deal with a single or a group of individuals, whereas Vinland Saga encompasses the state, society, and people. It brings forth a quite historically accurate and well-researched portrayal of violence, war, conflicts, slavery, politics, deceit, and the human condition. However, I think, more than the intimate depiction of society as it was, Vinland Saga’s success lies in one of the most extensive scrutiny of inner conflicts, a man’s fight to become a person with no enemy, to found a nation with no war, to dream of a society with no slavery. Being born into one of the most violent races and one of the most violent times in history, being driven for decades by rage and revenge, what Thorfinn achieves (or tries to achieve) is the epitome of humanity. Vinland Saga is ultimately a story of character development, forgiveness, repentance, sacrifice, and redemption; to seek light at the end of the tunnel; to cherish life amidst death; and to find hope even in the darkest of times.
I'm in tears! It really has been a long journey. They have come so far. And I cried not from tragedy, but also from the quiet, overwhelming beauty of healing. Karli once asked, "What's taking time so long?", you will realize healing doesn’t arrive like a storm; it arrives like seeds planted in frozen soil. Hild’s forgiveness hits hard because it wasn't easy but it's earned.
And yes, the day had arrived. After everything—vengeance, bloodshed, slavery—they’ve reached something permanent. This isn’t just the end of a journey. It’s the start of a life they all chose to live.
one of the greatest panels ever reside in this volume. chapter 191 lives in my heart. years of unending, strenuous labor and sincerity from thorfinn could only lead to such a powerful scene
Something that's been in the back of my mind for quite a bit now is finally addressed: the tragedy of knowing what has become of America and its utopian roots.
And we are confronted with some environmental concerns as well, could this manga get any more woke? /s
I appreciate how native people are represented in this arc: they're shown to be smart and insightful, but they're also troubled with the same problems and stupidity as their new uninvited neighbours. They're not being infantilised nor excessively exoticised. They may be less advanced technologically, but they're shown to be much more developed spiritually – Norse cosmology seems just pretty childish compared to what a Lnu shaman is capable of achieving through his connection to the spirits. And it's great that Yukimura incorporates within the narrative our contemporary understanding of native peoples' superior ecological awareness.
Thorfinn reaching such a good point in his life just when the native man's world crumbles was a touching conclusion of the volume.
This arc is becoming my favorite, each character shines and their development is incredible the last chapter made me cry Hild and Thorfinn are the stars in this Vol. we had another meeting of Thorfinn and King Canute although it's a flashback, I really liked it because King Canute continues to be surprised by Thorfinn, the interactions with the native people are interesting and very witty with Bug-Eyes being the diplomat in charge and Thorfinn and Gudrid being parents melted my heart.

This series changed so much since the beginning and i can't believe i'm enjoying this as much as before. Volume 26 is awesome, a lot of things happened but at the same time it feels like no time has passed. Great art as always, the interactions with the Lnu are interesting and funny and the character development is excellent. That last chapter is a kicker, made me tear up and all.
4 stelle
