What a good ending to the current arc, I really liked the arc with Vannie!
The last chapter also sets the next part up nicely! Can't wait to see the completed ship!

Voilà un manga que je trouve toujours aussi sympathique à suivre !
Les dessins restent une valeur sûre, ils sont juste magnifiques ! Concernant l’histoire, il n’y a toujours pas de grosse intrigue qui tient le fil, mais juste des petites historiettes sur chaque protagoniste du Quin Zaza.
Ici, on continue avec Vannie sur le point d’abandonner son poste et ses amis pour endosser le rôle de reine de son pays. Elle peut bien évidemment compter sur tous ses amis, et ce, malgré la décision, très difficile, qu’elle prendra. Ce sont les retrouvailles avec sa demi-sœur ainsi qu’une discussion qui achèvera de la convaincre (mais je n’en dis pas plus).
Ensuite, nous allons avoir droit à une jolie petite romance entre deux membres de l’équipage du vaisseau ainsi qu’un pan du passé de Soraya.
Plus on avance et plus on se rend compte que ce manga parle avant tout du lien très fort qui unit tous les personnages du Quin Zaza. Leur amitié très forte et la façon dont ils ont intégré l’équipage. Les dragons et tout le reste, c’est un peu la cerise sur le gâteau.
Enfin bref. Quoi qu’il en soit, j’aime toujours autant et c’est toujours un réel plaisir que de contempler les cases, car les dessins restent très beaux.

O arco da Vanney se encerra no décimo segundo volume. E é onde ela precisa tomar uma decisão sobre o que ela quer fazer pelo reino e por si mesma. Ao longo de dois capítulos vemos que a personagem é guiada para uma resolução que não é ideia dela. Caso ela tivesse seguido com aquilo, não só ela perderia novamente sua identidade e voltaria a se sentir solitária, como não seria totalmente honesta com os seus próprios sentimentos. Claro que levá-la propositalmente até a névoa foi uma manobra arriscada e poderia ter dado muito errado, mas serviu para o que eles pretendiam. A guerra civil entre os dois lados precisava de uma resolução definitiva para que Alena pudesse seguir em frente. Vannabell só iria representar os erros do passado. Por isso que a solução proposta no mangá era um meio termo. Era apenas algo para evitar que as pessoas se levantassem de novo. A atitude da Vannabell foi de uma austeridade incrível, e só foi possível graças ao tempo que ela passou ao lado dos seus companheiros do Quin Zaza. A personagem conseguiu vencer os seus medos e acertar as contas com um passado que a assombrava. Se ela for retornar ao caça-dragões ou permanecer como rainha, isso não importa de todo porque a personagem já se tornou uma pessoa melhor do que já era. E pode enfim revelar seu verdadeiro potencial.
Disse que iria falar da arte e duas coisas me encantaram nesse volume. Temos algumas cenas de ação que são muito boas e Kuwabara continua a usar pouco a linha cinética. Isso o coloca distante de uma tradição japonesa, mas ele consegue fazer bom uso disso. Mesmo sem esse recurso, seus personagens conseguem realizar manobras que são bem executadas. E outra: não é que ele não usa de todo, apenas reduz a sua incidência na história. Ao fazer isso, potencializa os momentos de ação. Outro bom recurso é a dos quadros que atravessam a página, como se representassem um horizonte infinito. Para cenas em que são mostradas momentos de reflexão ou das naves no espaço, isso dá um efeito lindo de continuidade. A gente chama isso de sangria, quando o quadro transborda. Ou seja, o autor não só conseguiu acertar os ponteiros com o que ele já vinha empregando desde o começo do mangá, mas inseriu elementos novos que permitiram a ele explorar novas possibilidades. Para mim, perfeito. Sou só elogios a essas duas edições.
É uma edição também bastante emocional. Daquelas que novamente vão se concentrar em destacar o que liga esses personagens. Os laços que os fazem confiar uns nos outros. É muito legal ver todo o desenrolar final do que acontece com a Vanney, mas preciso trazer também os outros dois capítulos pequenos onde vemos isso se destacar também. Para esse ponto aqui, vale destacar a amizade entre o Faye e o Soraya que precisam arrumar alguma forma de conseguir dinheiro já que o Quin Zaza está sendo consertado. Na primeira interação dos dois, a história se focou mais no Soraya até por conta do pequeno plot dele com a Takita. Agora, vamos ver mais sobre o Faye que sempre ajudou seu amigo nos momentos de necessidade. Aqui, vemos o quanto uma amizade sincera pode nos tirar de caminhos ruins já que Faye reflete o quanto sua vida poderia ter tomado outro rumo caso ele não tivesse encontrado com o Soraya e o seguido até o Quin Zaza. Conexões podem nos levar tanto para bons ou para maus caminhos, dependendo de quem é e de qual a sua índole. Soraya é um bom homem apesar de ele querer mostrar para as outras pessoas que não é. Quando ele tenta aprender a arte divinatória, seu objetivo não é obter vantagens egoístas, mas ajudar os seus companheiros quando puder. E é a isso que o Faye se refere quando diz que a amizade dele é importante.
Bem, quero a Nenette no Quin Zaza. E ao mesmo tempo não quero. Que personagem fascinante. Alguém que ainda está em busca da sua vibe e do reconhecimento de seus colegas. Nenette foge do padrão ao buscar soluções fora da caixa para os designs que ela deseja para seus projetos. Ela ainda é bastante insegura e erra bastante até por causa de seus próprios exageros. Muitas vezes a solução para um problema pode ser encontrado na simplicidade de uma ideia e não em algo bizarro e grandioso. Hiro a faz pensar justamente nisso. Com uma cabeça fria e reduzindo a escala dos planos, ela pode conseguir chegar a alguma conclusão. Nenette representa a nós mesmos quando chegamos ao ensino superior: queremos apresentar algo grandioso e que choque a sociedade. Queremos ser conhecidos por algo sem igual. Pouco a pouco somos podados para nos concentrarmos em metas realistas. Sonhos incríveis podem ser alcançados, mas precisamos subir uma série de degraus para chegarmos lá.
Para mim, as duas edições foram as melhores da série até aqui. Talvez até porque a Vanney seja uma personagem querida daqueles que acompanham o mangá e cercada de mistérios em sua origem. Só fico preocupado de o mangá querer começar a criar grandes arcos que levam vários volumes para serem resolvidos. Isso não é o estilo do mangá. Acho que ele se potencializa em histórias mais curtas, dividindo a atenção entre vários dos integrantes da nave. Mesmo assim, a história conseguiu atingir o seu ápice e ainda temos o drama da Quin Zaza que precisa ser resolvido de alguma forma. A arte está muito boa, com o autor encontrando o seu ritmo e ajustando os elementos que ele trouxe de novidade para dar harmonia ao que ele pretende fazer. Todas as críticas que fiz em outras resenhas ficaram para trás para que eu seja só elogios agora.

"Hey. Why're you spacing out? We've got a dragon to catch!"
Few will argue that Mika has a way with words, but whether the guy is busily promulgating the virtues of dragon meat to random deckhands or mumbling as a blathering apparition in a crewmate's dream, he always knows what to say. In DRIFTING DRAGONS v12, Vannie steps up to the lectern of destiny and must reconcile her love of drifting aloft, with friends, against the endless demands of grounding herself, keeping close to a home in need of a leader. People will love her wherever she goes, and with whichever decision she makes, but will she love the person she becomes?
One of this manga's sorest facets of character development has often been the unbalanced portrayal of the crewmates' affection for one another. Readers know the weirdoes of the Quin Zaza would do anything for each other, but the details as to what they specifically see in one another is often left to readers' guesswork. Some dynamics are more visible than others, certainly, but on the whole, it's one of the manga's most glaring weaknesses. Notably, DRIFTING DRAGONS v12 makes a concerted effort to highlight what Vannie means to her crewmates.
For example, Jiro, although written as the "Mr. Serious" progeny navigator, confesses to adoring Vannie's quiet strength. He views the woman as a big sister he could never survive without. And to a point, Jiro's intractable clinginess, for once, isn't annoying, but achingly sweet.
Elsewhere in the current volume, readers reencounter a B-story involving Nenetta, a wild-haired airship designer. For this dynamic character, repairing the Quin Zaza alone isn't enough. It's gotta be lightning-proof. It's gotta be resilient against steam explosions. It's gotta be capable of nimble movements. "I feel like I'm on the verge of a breakthrough," she says. Except, of course, nobody believes her.
Nenetta's frenetic, obsessive behavior is an old trope among anime and manga storytelling. And as is often the case, the story about the character who helps Nenetta is often a critical component of the greater narrative than first hinted at. Hiro, an apprentice mechanic, volunteers to haul the sleepless airship designer across the finish line when Liriope Lalage, the shipbuilding scion, gives the woman a stern deadline. Hiro, equally of wild hair, but also young and hunky, shows patience and compassion where everyone else merely proffers the usual exasperation or the embers of burned-out faith. The subplot could've done more to give Hiro the space he needs to build out his personality beyond that of a helper mechanic, but in the end, DRIFTING DRAGONS v12 contrives a clever solution to the Quin Zaza rebuild problem, and Nenetta, fittingly, shows her thanks.

Questo è stato uno dei miei volumi preferiti tra quelli letti finora di Drifting Dragons. Da un lato, abbiamo Vannie che finalmente sceglie in maniera libera e consapevole come vivere la sua vita - non incatenata a un trono che non ha mai voluto, ma in volo, insieme ai suoi compagni di avventura. Una Vannie più emotiva del solito...beh, sono felice che sia rimasta sulla Quin Zaza. Ho apprezzato molto anche il momento con Mika e con Jiro, due persone che le vogliono bene e che hanno a cuore la sua felicità. Allo stesso tempo, Arena sarà un regno senza re, in cui tutti i cittadini avranno la possibilità di scegliere cosa fare delle loro vite. Una democrazia che sta muovendo i primi passi.
Dall'altro lato, ci sono gli altri componenti della Quin Zaza che, in attesa del ritorno di Vannie & co. e dei lavori per la ristrutturazione della nave, si devono trovare un lavoro per mantenersi e mangiare. Con la povera Nenetta intenta a creare il progetto di una nave capace di resistere a qualsiasi tempesta.
Il volume si chiude con la reunion di tutta la ciurma e con nuove avventure all'orizzonte.
Insomma, è stato un volume molto carino e piacevole. Chissà quando uscirà il prossimo...

I found another new favorite manga series completely by accident. How? I stumbled across volume five for a dollar at a thrift shop and immediately fell in love with this series the moment I started it. I’m currently waiting on volume 14 to stop being checked out from the library so I can continue the series, but I think whoever’s reading this series is taking their time working through it very slowly. Noooooo…
In this story we follow a team of drakers who live on an airship and hunt dragons for food. Dragons in this world are giant eldritch monsters that occasionally attack cities at random. So it’s not like they’re out there hunting down cute lil dragons for sport. Although not all dragons will eventually become aggressive and attack people, they all have the potential to do so.
Despite my efforts to explain to you all why it’s sometimes ok to kill these “dragons,” I know that some of you might still not be cool with that, and that’s fine. If you feel that you wouldn’t be able to read a series in which these creatures are killed for food, then go ahead and walk away from this one. This is a major issue that people sometimes have when they start this series, and I wouldn’t want any of you to be uncomfortable with that.
Although, if you are planning on sticking around with this series, you’ll very quickly find that not only do readers sometimes take issue with that, but so do people in this world as well. There are a lot of people living in this world who hate drakers because they don’t think dragons should be hunted for food when farm animals exist. What they keep forgetting is that a cow isn’t going to burn a city to the ground just because it felt like being angry today.
Be prepared for these sorts of ethical discussions, because they’re all over this series. I’ve been thinking of Drifting Dragons as a more serious, skyfaring version of Delicious in Dungeon in my head, but since I haven’t read Delicious in Dungeon yet, I have no idea if that’s an accurate assumption or not. Look at me, finding more series to add to my tbr when my tbr is already way too big as it is…
Overall, the main plot events are related to taking down big dragons and meeting other people who interact with dragons in different ways. For example, they meet one ship and its crew that study dragons scientifically, and another ship that hunts dragons for the fun of it. Everyone has different ideas about how dragons should be treated, and those opinions often conflict with each other.
As the story goes on, you learn more about the backstories of some of the main characters, which is always very interesting. It usually comes up when they’re hunting a particular dragon, so you get both the cool dragon stuff alongside an emotionally gripping chunk of character development. I’ve never seen a story that pairs plot and character development in this exact way, so it’s really nice to get something that feels new and fresh.
At the end of some of the chapters, there are recipes for cooking different dragon dishes, and occasionally other dishes that don’t involve dragon meat or dragon eggs. I think these recipes would pretty easily translate to other real world foods if you substitute out dragon meat for chicken or pork or whatever meat you prefer. I’m interested in actually trying some of these recipes, because they all look so delicious.
I was able to find a few of them on the wiki after returning the manga to the library, but not all of them. Maybe I’ll check the manga out again and send the missing ones to whoever manages the Drifting Dragons wiki. Some of my favorites that I really wanted to try aren’t on the wiki. It looks like they mostly only have the ones from the first couple of volumes, but must have given up after a while. Not a manga giving me homework…
If you couldn’t tell by the fact that I’ve just been rambling on about random parts of this manga, I loved it so much. This series gives me so much to think about that I could just go on for days if you all let me. The dragons have such strange designs, the food looks delicious, the characters are really fun to learn about, and all the themes are so fascinating. I’m currently waiting on volumes 14-16 to get returned to the library so I can get caught up, and they can’t come back soon enough.
Also, a couple years ago, Netflix started an anime adaptation of Drifting Dragons, which I’m really sad won’t be continuing. It used a lot of 3D animation to capture the huge ships and dragons, which at first I thought I wouldn’t like, but I eventually grew to be ok with. I don’t feel like every single dragon I saw was as perfectly close to their manga designs as I would have liked, but the ones we see a lot of are pretty accurate, so that’s good. I’m not sure why nobody watched this series and why it was canceled. Maybe the manga wasn’t very far in translation yet? Idk. I’m just really sad about it.
If you’d be cool with reading a series about hunting and eating dragons, especially if you liked Dungeon Meshi, I’d love to know what you think of this one. I get the feeling that I’d probably like Dungeon Meshi based on how much I loved Drifting Dragons, so maybe I’ll get around to that one at some point. Don’t worry about trying to convince me to read Dungeon Meshi, I’ve already got it on my list. I will eventually get to it at some point. Just maybe not right now. I need to finish getting caught up with this one first.

I found another new favorite manga series completely by accident. How? I stumbled across volume five for a dollar at a thrift shop and immediately fell in love with this series the moment I started it. I’m currently waiting on volume 14 to stop being checked out from the library so I can continue the series, but I think whoever’s reading this series is taking their time working through it very slowly. Noooooo…
In this story we follow a team of drakers who live on an airship and hunt dragons for food. Dragons in this world are giant eldritch monsters that occasionally attack cities at random. So it’s not like they’re out there hunting down cute lil dragons for sport. Although not all dragons will eventually become aggressive and attack people, they all have the potential to do so.
Despite my efforts to explain to you all why it’s sometimes ok to kill these “dragons,” I know that some of you might still not be cool with that, and that’s fine. If you feel that you wouldn’t be able to read a series in which these creatures are killed for food, then go ahead and walk away from this one. This is a major issue that people sometimes have when they start this series, and I wouldn’t want any of you to be uncomfortable with that.
Although, if you are planning on sticking around with this series, you’ll very quickly find that not only do readers sometimes take issue with that, but so do people in this world as well. There are a lot of people living in this world who hate drakers because they don’t think dragons should be hunted for food when farm animals exist. What they keep forgetting is that a cow isn’t going to burn a city to the ground just because it felt like being angry today.
Be prepared for these sorts of ethical discussions, because they’re all over this series. I’ve been thinking of Drifting Dragons as a more serious, skyfaring version of Delicious in Dungeon in my head, but since I haven’t read Delicious in Dungeon yet, I have no idea if that’s an accurate assumption or not. Look at me, finding more series to add to my tbr when my tbr is already way too big as it is…
Overall, the main plot events are related to taking down big dragons and meeting other people who interact with dragons in different ways. For example, they meet one ship and its crew that study dragons scientifically, and another ship that hunts dragons for the fun of it. Everyone has different ideas about how dragons should be treated, and those opinions often conflict with each other.
As the story goes on, you learn more about the backstories of some of the main characters, which is always very interesting. It usually comes up when they’re hunting a particular dragon, so you get both the cool dragon stuff alongside an emotionally gripping chunk of character development. I’ve never seen a story that pairs plot and character development in this exact way, so it’s really nice to get something that feels new and fresh.
At the end of some of the chapters, there are recipes for cooking different dragon dishes, and occasionally other dishes that don’t involve dragon meat or dragon eggs. I think these recipes would pretty easily translate to other real world foods if you substitute out dragon meat for chicken or pork or whatever meat you prefer. I’m interested in actually trying some of these recipes, because they all look so delicious.
I was able to find a few of them on the wiki after returning the manga to the library, but not all of them. Maybe I’ll check the manga out again and send the missing ones to whoever manages the Drifting Dragons wiki. Some of my favorites that I really wanted to try aren’t on the wiki. It looks like they mostly only have the ones from the first couple of volumes, but must have given up after a while. Not a manga giving me homework…
If you couldn’t tell by the fact that I’ve just been rambling on about random parts of this manga, I loved it so much. This series gives me so much to think about that I could just go on for days if you all let me. The dragons have such strange designs, the food looks delicious, the characters are really fun to learn about, and all the themes are so fascinating. I’m currently waiting on volumes 14-16 to get returned to the library so I can get caught up, and they can’t come back soon enough.
Also, a couple years ago, Netflix started an anime adaptation of Drifting Dragons, which I’m really sad won’t be continuing. It used a lot of 3D animation to capture the huge ships and dragons, which at first I thought I wouldn’t like, but I eventually grew to be ok with. I don’t feel like every single dragon I saw was as perfectly close to their manga designs as I would have liked, but the ones we see a lot of are pretty accurate, so that’s good. I’m not sure why nobody watched this series and why it was canceled. Maybe the manga wasn’t very far in translation yet? Idk. I’m just really sad about it.
If you’d be cool with reading a series about hunting and eating dragons, especially if you liked Dungeon Meshi, I’d love to know what you think of this one. I get the feeling that I’d probably like Dungeon Meshi based on how much I loved Drifting Dragons, so maybe I’ll get around to that one at some point. Don’t worry about trying to convince me to read Dungeon Meshi, I’ve already got it on my list. I will eventually get to it at some point. Just maybe not right now. I need to finish getting caught up with this one first.
