I think it would be wicked cool to have a talking cat, as long as they weren't 12 ft tall like Maori. What wouldn't be nice --- running across spiders that are 1/2 the size of an adult and could talk as well. That is the thing of nightmares!
Despite the cutesy cover, this is not a YA book. However, with some modifications, Katherina could turn this into a YA series. She could have two series - one rated R and one rated PG. My daughter would love to read the adventurous tales of Charming, Cat, Hector, and the other chatty animals.
Well done! I have been a fan of this author for some time now. All Cat wanted was a normal life, and it was something completely different. Having had a cat for over 11 years I smiled while reading this book. It was addicting, and I was interested all the way until the end. It was fun, and not boring at all. It was well-formatted, and simple to read. I am not going to spoil it! I highly recommend this book!
My love for cats may be enough to love this book. I must say, I would love it if my cats could talk. They already have loads of personality without the ability and I can’t imagine the crazy things they would say if they could. I love the cats’ personalities and the main character, Cat, was great. The storyline was so fun and different from anything I have read before. Overall, I really enjoyed the book. I only wish it didn’t end on a cliffhanger.
But I was wrong. The book begins with a bang of confusion and doesn't really let up. At 15%, I had to quit, because it's all backstory and stream of consciousness and no story. Also, editing is inconsistent.
Sorry to state that this story was somewhat difficult to read. Between the general narrative and character comments it was a challenge and became more work than pleasure resulting in my ceasing to continue. Would prefer not to rate.
I do however thank goodreads and the book’s giveaway sponsors for the opportunity to obtain and read a copy of this book.
It was a difficult read as the grammar and sentence structures were awkward. It seemed to be somewhat artistic license but awkward won out. Lots of phrases were masquerading as sentences. There were also many instances of "autocorrect" typos in which the wrong words were selected. The cat characters were awesome.
If you didn't buy this book because it featured a lady fighting against a giant cat, you're lying to yourself. Because that's exactly why I got my copy.
Everything about this book, from the cover, to the blurb was promising me a good time in this Crack treated seriously book, that I just couldn't resist. And at the beginning of things, it looked like I would be having the time of my life. I enjoyed the style, especially once we gave the cat an own POV. The amount of SASS, boy, I was grinning so much. The book did an amazing job on its depiction of cats. They are truly the best part about this - is what I would be saying, if it weren't for one character, that stole my heart the second we met her: Dr. Susan.
GOD, you don't understand how much I loved Dr. Susan. She was giving me really strong Robotnik vibes - which, if you didn't know, is one of my fav characters. I don't know, I just love reading about genious, sassy evil scientists. They have a special place in my heart. And that place was Susan shaped. Which is why I'll be absolutly honest with you, the fact, that I ended up giving this 3 stars, is: You did Susan dirty.
The book is literally called "Dr. Susans's Reign" and what exactly is Dr. Susan doing in this one that would justify such a title? Is she REALLY ruling anything? Is she the big bad that she deserves to be? Because I don't think she is. We meet Susan mostly through flashbacks and memories. Which - at one point - had me hyped up so much, because I thought, that we'd be getting an Evil Power Couple. I don't know, the book was just giving of this vibe, that Susan was Cat's one true love and noone would ever be able to compare. #TeamSusan #IDidn'tLikeRaven
I was more than shocked to read and learn about what the book did to Susan. It felt like such a disrepect. Especially since we were forced through this long section of Cat x Raven action that I did not care about at all. I'm not shipping them, not even a tiny bit, and I'm not sorry. I want Cat to get back together with Susan and I want them to destroy the agancy and rule the word together.
Another problem I had was, that the book was giving me conflicting information about Susan. I'm aware that our MC was wearing pink love glasses, but that still isn't changing the fact, that - at the end of the day - I wouldn't be able to give you an accurate list of who Dr. Susan was as a character or person. Her motives felt ... weird. Yes, there is gonna be more of the series in the future, but this was supposed to be Susan's book and we literally don't learn anything about her motivation's. The only thing the book did, was make me ship Cat & Susan super hard.
We don't have a red line that we follow, instead we jump around a lot, include flashbacks here and there and end call it a day. It's not the worst, but it's certainly not optimal. I guss a lot of the Susan x Cat flashbacks could have been brought up in conversation? Maybe? Like, hear me out: Susan & Cat going on dates, were Susan pretends that she wants to get back togehter - which she kind of wants but can't - and they talk about their past and their future and the world and things are weird and awkward, but also amazing and perfect. And both are fake/pretend dating each other while also NOT pretend/fake dating each other, because they are both in love still. And Susan wants to rule the world AND Cat's ass, which I'm sure she'd manage. She's a smart woman after all, and she's got two hands. Would have made the twist/ending even more painful. :P
It's not a bad book, but it's also not the strongest of beginnings for a series. I guess, if you like what you see on the cover and can read on the blurb and you're interested in a story that's not too deep, featurig talking cats and Evil-Scientist's that deserved better, you could pick this book up.
I'm tempted to continue reading, because I've been informed, that we'll be meeting Dr. Susan again. And I'm honestly really rooting for her to get what she was denied in this entry. It's not
I love cats, so with a cover like this, I k ew I was going to check out Dr. Susan’s Reign by Katerina Degratte. The plot is very intriguing and I think this was a pretty good read!
Cat and Maori are great characters. I think this is where this book shines. Each character is richly developed and I found myself cheering for them almost immediately. The characters drive the plot forward and have a purpose. I love books that are character driven and this is.
The plot is a bit confusing in areas, but I managed to get through those and found this to be a compelling read. I liked the twists and turns, it did keep me on the edge of my seat a few times.
Overall, I liked Dr Susan’s Reign. I would read more from this author in the future.
Thank you to R&R Book Tours for the free review copy of this book. All opinions are my own and unbiased.
First, how can you not love a giant cat??? Not so crazy about the giant spiders, but I'm not crazy about spiders in general. There were plenty of twists to keep you guessing, and the story moved along at a smooth pace. Although definitely not for younger readers, this was a fun adult fantasy with plenty of scenes to spark the imagination. A fun read overall.
Dr. Susan’s Reign kicks off in the middle of a cat fight. I’m not sure if this is good or not. Katerina Degratte does get around to illuminating everyone about who is who and what is going on. It still left me feeling a little anchorless.
