I'm strong, I'm passionate, I'm free. At least I was until my father asked me to marry his handsome, charming and completely gorgeous right hand man who was also a sort of friend to myself. I agreed of course, mainly because it was his last dying wish to see me with someone who he knew would treat me well. Will I love him? Will I hate him? Maybe both with a little bit of crazy I know I'll fail, I'm selfish, self-centered and shallow. I just hope he's prepared for when I do.
This is our story, it has: a Channing Tatum poster, a long lost brother, a bony blonde and a promiscuous female friend, plus a hot shot star and the one and only sinus blocker Sylvia. Now throw in a crazy lady and a man who would do anything for her (meaning myself and James) and you have our story. Or the first part of it.
*Recommended for readers aged 17+ due to some sexual content and strong language* Approx: 64000 words.
A. E. Murphy is the Queen of sarcasm and satire, she likes long walks in the park, as much as ice cubes like to chill in a roasting oven. She’s effortlessly independent and so good at adulting it’s unfair on the rest of the world. She only napped twice today and has only avoided the dishes for three days before making the child slaves do them this morning. Winning! Her favourite hobby is writing, her worst hobby is reading through that writing. Also she has two cats that carry toys to the top of the stairs and drop them down so they can chase them. They do this repeatedly in the middle of the night. Who cares if she has work the next morning? Not the cats, that’s for sure. And if it’s not the cats doing the waking, it’s the toddler crawling into bed with her and pulling individual hairs from her scalp with pudgy little fingers for comfort. This is likely why she’s in a constant state of grump unless there’s chocolate and coffee. P.S. Please leave feedback, if not on the book then on this ridiculous bio she wrote herself. It’s the least you can do seeing as she’ll forever talk in the third person now. Alex loves her readers. Alex says thank you. Alex smiles.
Great debut book, it had strong character ( Maya more so than James ) great chemistry and the shock factor.....All the things I love in a book. Maya was a spunky mare with a huge potty mouth but really likeable, she believes she's self centered and shallow. I thought she was passionate, loyal and a giver not a taker!!!!! James confused me, I wanted to learn more about him at the beginning of the book as it jump straight into the relationship after they got married. I thought this had a great storyline and I can't wait for the second book!!!
The h is just so self-centred. I just can't with her. She's one of those characters that goes out all night, flirts with another guy, openly acknowledges she wants to sleep with him and then whines when her husband says that's completely inappropriate behaviour. Really? Are you mentally impaired in some way, Maya? Because I don't believe anyone could be that stupid.
She keeps saying that James is too good for her and she is 100% absolutely right. Leave her, James. She doesn't deserve even one tenth of your awesomeness.
I have to say I loved this story and adore Maya, loved her passion and banter with James so much, for once a different story line and I didn't see the twist coming at the end which brings me onto my negative part about the story it's only part 1 nnnnnooooo!! I'm so impatient so hurry AE and get the next part to me, otherwise. An outstanding read made me laugh out loud and made me cry, everything I love in a book.
It's my very own first publication. I pray people enjoy and even if they don't it's a learning experience for me and I can apply all criticism and or praise to my future work. It's something I've worked hard on, probably not hard enough. I enjoy the story and even when I read back I find some parts hilarious which is probably weird because I wrote it. xx
Although I would love to have a James, he is rather yummy! :)
Wow..what a debut! Fantastic story of the kick ass, tell it as it is, humorous, kooky Maya, who promises her father, on his deathbed, that she will enter into an arranged marriage with James. Now James..where shall I start? James *sigh* is a broad shouldered, muscled, toned, golden, dark haired male, who Maya's dad thinks would be a perfect husband for her. They have known each other for years and James also works at the same family business. Did I mention that James has the perfect nose, string chiseled jaw and wavy brown hair? He is the epitome of sexy..
They embark on their journey of marriage & I thoroughly enjoyed watching their banter as their relationship grew. James is perfect for her & he just adores the bones of Maya. If only she can accept that she is worthy of him..
The story ends in a cliffy & quite honestly I'm heartbroken myself...I want to shake, I want to slap, I want to cry, I want to hug, I want to go straight onto A Liitle Bit of Us...
'I’m crazy, sex crazed, party crazed, work crazed, coffee crazed, chocolate crazed.'
Cover: 7/10 Writing style: 9/10 Heroine: 9/10 Hero: 8/10 Amount of humour: 8/10 Amount of jealousy: 3/10 Hotness: 6/10 Romance: 8/10 Ending: 8/10 Extra book Details: Whole series released. 1st book in the series with cliffhanger. 2nd book with same leads. 3rd book with spin-off character as lead.
Meet Maya 'I've only slept with four people. I'm twenty one, fresh out of university with a degree in chemistry and preparing myself for the day I’ll take on my father's pharmaceutical business on top of my own half. Hopefully later rather than sooner.'
Unfortunately it's sooner. And her dad's dying wish was that she get married to his right hand man, the gorgeous and smart James. “He knows the business as well as I do, he's trustworthy, with him at your side you won't need to do half has much as what I do.”
With two little words she'll do anything to put him at ease. “Chemo failed.”
At first, Maya loves her life too much to give in to the bonds of marriage. 'I'm not subtle. My thing however, that I am good at is working! Working, then partying, shopping, sex, lots and lots of amazing sex with hot boys. Freedom, another thing I enjoy immensely.'
She's also afraid of love. 'If I let him in, James I mean, i'll only end up losing him. This marriage is a partnership not a declaration of love.'
Maya wants to make the marriage work. She's knows James is awesome and finds herself wanting to make him happy, and Maya doesn't do things by half. They argue a lot, but it stops the relationship from getting dull. James is sweet, kind and understanding, the ying to her yang. But she knows she doesn't deserve him, she's unpredictable and it's only time before she lets him down.
Maya is a fab character, you won't like her if you prefer your lead females to be timid and shy. She's clever, successful, generous, kind, sweet, funny, honest, caring and has a heart of gold. But she's also argumentative, selfish, and thinks little of herself... but most of all... she's batshit crazy!
I loved this book, it was funny, never a dull moment, found myself lolling and devastated, there was no paragraph skipping, a lovely lead male, a bit of hotness, a touch of jealousy and something I never saw coming.
“You're so beautiful. Although I’m a little concerned about the hidden condom.” “Talk later. Lift me. Time for bang bang.” “Even something as childish as bang bang sounds fucking sexy when it comes from you.” “Less talky more corky.”
3.5 .. so I really liked the story , I laughed more than once !
But the Weirdest thing happened
Spoilers and RANT Ahead ::
Ok so that's how I felt , Don't Judge but I kept imagining if the H did all those things and knew I wouldn't even have gone through the whole book ,
enough ranting ..
Anyways , I did finish the book in one setting , it was different , interesting and kept me hooked . Going to read the next one now ! from the spoilers I've read ,
I loved this book and what a fantastic debut novel.
I loved Maya, she was funny, smart and everything I love about a book heroine!
I also loved the internal dialogue with her libido.
I found myself laughing out loud at some of the stuff she came out with.
In the next book I'd love to find out more about James- he was adorable, well he was till be did what he did...bad James!!
Even though the book is set in America you can tell the writer is english, lots of British sayings. I dont think that will go down too well with our friends across the ocean but hopefully they will look past it and see this book for what it is :)
This has got to be the best freebie I have ever got from Amazon- I know its not free now,but go buy it! You wont regret it.
And one of the best parts.....hardly any wait till book 2!
Holy mother of... OMG! A little crazy? No! It's a whole lotta Crazy!
A little bit of crazy? Oh hell no! But I loved it :)
Okay, so let me start off with Maya. Oh, Maya! What can I say about her? She's funny, a little spoiled, a brat, pissed me off, and irritated the hell out of me. She knows it, admits it, and yet, I still really liked her. She reminds me of Jillian Dodd's Keatyn from the Keatyn Chronicles, but as a somewhat immature adult. I ♥ Dodd's work, and I ♥'d this book!
Now James. Oh, James! What have you done?! I understand where your head is at buddy, I really do, but did you have to go and do that?!! Why-oh-why?! You didn't have the proof to go off and do that. I know Maya needs to grow up, but why? Why that?! I was so rooting for you, rooting to the point I was ready to slap some sense into Maya for her stupidity and childish antics. I'm sobbing here! Okay, no I'm not, but I wanted to.
And then we come to the final chapter in this novel, and whooooaaaa! MUST KNOW! Must know what road James and Maya are headed for!
OKAY! So I had to know what was going to happen. Stayed up 'till 4 am reading and then had to have the second book, which is available. Thank gawd!
Those who love romance with a touch of a whole lot of crazy, I totally recommend this series.
And I must also thank N because it was her reviews on Amazon that enticed me to pick this little gem up. Thank you!
A side note: British vs American. Some notable errors and such, but easily overlooked because the story was that good!
A Little Bit Crazy was just that “crazy” and erratic.
Maya, a twentyish rich and pampered young woman - subtlety is not her best trait - in fact where she is concerned it is non-existent. The one thing she is good at though, is working, then partying, sex, lots of it and having her freedom.
Her freedom has always been no negotiable until the one thing that she loves is taken from her. Her beloved father.
“Screw freedom” Maya decides and complies with his last request and enters into an arranged marriage with James. Handsome, charming, smart James who knows the business inside out. The predator marries the mouse.
Maya is a complete narcissist, her life is at time chaotic and full of chaos. She also acts in such a way that its impossible to ignore and I times I disliked her - a lot! She is childish, intentionally irritating and she did not win me over until much later in the book.
James caved into her whims too much and I would have liked him to “man” up a lot more. The way she treated him (especially when the trust issues arose) made me squirm.
Although this story is set in America, there are a number of elements I thought that are too English to work for an American audience. I'm not sure why A E Murphy (an English author) decided to set her book in another country and I know she worked hard to make this an “American” story but I felt that a lot of the humour and mannerisms were a tad English.
This was a good debut novel from this young author but in order to turn this into a great read A E Murphy will need to grow into her writing and employ the skills of a good editor.
I look forward to finding out what book 2 has in store!
Well what a nice little surprise this little gem turned out to be.
At first, I thought, hmmm..not going to be liking Maya much. A self centered, selfish and shallow girl. But as the storyline progresses you will be punching the air for this hilarious, feisty, highly intelligent, but internally insecure crazy, but loyal young lady.
She marries, the ever so charming James as a promise to her dying father. James has always been in love with Maya. He has known her since he started working for her father, as his right hand man for their pharmaceutical company. This is where we are really introduced to Maya's fun and feisty character, especially so with the internal banter with her libidio and her thoughts.
I would have loved to learn more of James' character and would have liked him to be a stronger character, especially when the relationship breaks down due to trust issues. But that's me as i love caveman, alpha males, bull dozing their way back in!
A refreshingly, full of fun characters, full of drama and humour, making this series a nice little read.
What a start. I like her personality, she's pretty tough, blunt, loves lots and lots of sex, and more. What I don't like about her is that, because she likes to be free and al she's hurting James without meaning to..She's self centered, can't blame the girl, she's spoiled.
James: How would you like it if your wife insists on having a poster of Channing Tatum next to your bed? Maya: Hey, I put your eyes on him. James: That's just creepy.... I like it when they fight...sometimes it's fun, sometimes...I just want to slap her..or him
I hate cheaters, but James did it for revenge, it's a hard pill to swallow but he was angry and he wanted her to feel pain, although it doesn't make it right but I do understand why he did it.
I like how the novel ended, they filed for divorce and totally ended things. It's realistic enough coz If I were put in that position, I'd do the same, forgiveness would be last thing I'd think of coz cheating is definitely not a forgive and forget thing..it takes time, a really long time and space.
5* yes-sir-rie!! Laughed so much reading this book even near the end when I had tears in my eyes. & I loved James!! Even after all that crap, my heart still broke for him & I just wanted to cuddle him (of course I can't cos I get with Lucas haha) x
I've never written a review. Never even bothered to download an ebook from Amazon. Let alone pay for one. Had a spare couple of quid from a gift card so plunged for this on a whim.
Best £1.02 I've spent in years, excluding when penny sweets were actually a penny
Having read the first book, I find myself having to order book 2. Worst thing about it? I'm a man, I should be reading stuff like Andy McNab or Stuart MacBride. Instead A E Murphy whoever you may be has a serious talent, yes as over reviews have mentioned there are a couple of bits but ignore them and just enjoy it. Fantastic read, was a genuine pleasure. I look forward to reading more material, I've no doubt that we will see a paperback one day
I have absolutely loved this book, I laughed and cried in the prologue, then I have been thoroughly entertained by Maya all the way through. When she collapsed I totally understood everything as this happened to my mum several years ago, and yes she was in hospital for several weeks also. Was actually upset with James for what he did to Maya after all she was doing for him, gutted for her even had a little tear with her. Brilliant read highly recommended. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0...
I really enjoyed this. But if cheating upsets you (honestly if you look at that through the whole lense, it becomes a lot more bearable. And trust me, he pays for it.) you need to have an open mind because there are reasons. Really snarky too, I love that. Amazing when you understand this was her debut novel.
The book was well written enough but for me it was just a tad boring. Also it felt odd it being set in the untied states when they just sounded English the way they talked and joked. As for the ending being heartbreak I just wanted to seriously not finish it. James seems so damn childish. They both did. The fact that he cheated on her as revenge seriously pissed me off. I don't think I can read the second book.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Story of spoilt Maya and gorgeous James. Maya drove me insane with her childishness and James was so soppy and over the top; however, although the characters drove me nuts, you did well in your writing, convinced me and felt like I was there. Well done to you Alexandra - looking forward to reading follow on - A Little bit of us.
This novel was effin crazy but holy shit was it amazing! I can't believe I haven't heard of it until now. I am really looking forward to the second installment. Also, James is a motherfucking asshat!
I enjoyed this first part. I really do, I loved their chemistry together and it only came down fall in the end. So can't wait to read the second book after this.
I was given this book for an honest review for Amber's Reading Room. I'm going to give it 4 crazy stars!
When I first started reading A Little Bit of Crazy, I thought Maya was going to annoy the shit out of me and for a portion of the book she did! However, I really ended up liking Maya.
My casting:
Maya: Maya is a 23 year old party girl. She adores her father who raised her as a single parent and would do anything for him including marrying his right hand man -James- because he is terminally ill. While she is ditzy and a little crazy at times, Maya is intelligent and business minded.
James: James is a 26 year old businessman in the pharmaceutical world. He was Maya's father's protege and the man her father wanted Maya to marry. He was adopted when he was five and raised by his mother Sylvia. We never meet his adoptive father, but do discuss later that he died a few years ago.
The story begins with Maya's father discussing her future and telling her that his chemo treatments have failed. Maya is distraught as she loves her father dearly and hates the idea of him not being there for her in the future.
As we enter chapter one we learn that Maya and James have married and that her father has passed. As the story progresses we learn about Maya's partying and the things she did in the year leading up to their wedding. We also watch as the two come to love each other and find that maybe feelings ran deeper than initially thought. There are many unanswered questions that get resolved in book 2, but nothing that deters from the story. I would have liked book 1 to have more of those details, but none the less, I liked it. Things I wanted to know were how he proposed, why he agreed to propose, how long did they know each other etc, but don't worry... everything comes in due time.
We learn that James is adopted and that he had an older brother. His mother that adopted him is evil at times and I really didn't like her character. James is stuck at finding out who his brother is so Maya makes it her mission to find him. She finds James' older brother and keeps it a secret until she can find out for sure that it is him. She wanted to surprise James, but unfortunately... Maya is the one who gets the surprise. At 90% I started screaming WTF JAMES! Don't worry Maya... I punched his ass through my screen (see that crack?) Trust was such a huge issue and I think I just couldn't get over James and his trust issues. In relationships there has to be balances and he was always so suspicious! Ugh... The story ends shortly after on not what I'd call a cliffhanger, but definitely it was a point where I was saying thank goodness I have book 2!!
What I liked was how funny Maya was. I laughed throughout the book. Maya battles her inner monologue often and her libido is quite the comedian. I liked the supporting characters. I'm glad Maya had many friends and I liked watching her evolve as a person. I'm enjoyed that the story is told from Maya's pov. It helps keep things in suspense as to what is coming especially from James and it helped me see how much Maya grew in the novel.
What I didn't like was I kept saying I wish this were set in England. I love the fact that the author studied American culture and tried to challenge herself, but she writes British mannerisms often and the phrases, words, and jokes would be better suited for a British character. I think that is why I read other reviews that criticized her grammar and writing style. While there were some editing issues, I don't think that all of them were editing problems, but rather phrasings that aren't typical in America. We just don't say some of those things! I also didn't care for Maya at times because I felt she was so teen-ish. Her behaviors had me thinking... really?
Overall I applaud Alexandra on her first novel. I will write a review on book 2 which will get a higher rating and hope in the future she will let me review Lucas' story because oh my... He has some naughty things going on. I just know it!
Images used are not mine. They are for the purpose of entertainment.
The story is written in Maya´s first-person narrative with direct addresses to the reader. She is funny. Especially in the second half of the book I laughed out loud from time to time. She is outgoing, glib and has her heart in the right place. Some authors let their female characters speak with body parts. In “A Little Bit Of Crazy” Maya dialogs with her libido. In my opinion it´s kind of strange because I don’t know one woman who really talks with it but it can be funny and it is an interesting narration method in romance novels. I really loved Maya´s and James´ relationship. They have a really good chemistry; even when they fight. Their dialogs are dynamic, quick-witted and hilarious. They fit perfectly.
Murphy´s writing style is good enough to connect with the story but Maya´s narration makes is hard to feel her emotions; mostly because she doesn’t want to feel what she feels. I only wished that I would feel her grief and heartbreak in the same amount I felt her happiness. Unfortunately, I laughed about some conversations and jokes but I didn’t tear up or cry when she experiences the bad or sad things.
I´m really impressed with the arc of suspense and the differences from other romance novels. “A Little Bit Of Crazy” is an unconventional love story. Other romance novels start with the meeting and tell the story till the wedding. Murphy writes about an arranged marriage and I really liked the fact that Maya becomes fond of James and falls in love with him. She doesn’t step away from the promise she made to her father. In most of the books I read in the past the men are the wealthy one in the relationships but that isn’t the case in Murphy´s story. Maya is the one with money and James handles the situation very well in my opinion.
I really favor multiple storyline in a book. In my experiences multiple storylines make it easier to increase the arc of suspense. “A Little Bit Of Crazy” belongs to the few stories with only one storyline that doesn’t need another storyline to be exciting. It is a page-turner by its own. As an enthusiast of real and honest stories I totally appreciate the introduction of James´ brother Lucas who gets evicted from his home and needs Maya´s help. The comparisons of both lifestyles are really well elaborated and something I totally miss in stories about all the billionaires. They live in a dream world with no correspondence to reality. It is a nice change and contrast that the reader is confronted with American reality where only one percent is rich enough and ninety-nine percent has to struggle. 27. Mai 2014
Maya Johnson's father just died and his last wish was for Maya to marry his right hand man, James Freeman. Her love for her father outweighed her love of freedom and married James. It took two months after their wedding and a month after her father's death to finally notice her husband. How he may have not been blindsided to this marriage as she had. That he may have wanted this, her, all along.
I absolutely am crazy for the crazy ass Maya is. She just cracks me up! She is as sex crazed as a nympho, confident and is not afraid to speak her mind. Three things that you may want to hate in a character but in Maya, those work for her. And James, he's perfect, really. A die hard romantic. Well, he may be bordering martyr, at first. He puts the saying; 'screw everyone as long as I am the one you come home to' stamped on his forehead and copyrights it. As much as I have grown to love Maya and her crazy antics, James I want to wring his neck, gut him, and feed him to the sharks! Anyway, I'll stop here and let you people read the actual novel itself.
