Nightfall #1

Extinction Pulse: An EMP Post Apocalyptic Thriller Series

Rate this book
NIGHTFALL SERIES: BOOK ONE OF SIX

Nothing will stop this father from finding his daughter.

Not even the end of the world.

Detective Elijah Wade is on the trail of a serial killer when the skies above Los Angeles erupt into the most spectacular light show humanity has ever seen. And the most deadly. His daughter is in a hospital bed on the other side of the continent, but where does his duty lie now? To her, to justice or to his species?

Astronomer Hannah Redman watches as her colleagues die one by one, victims of a lethal dose of radiation. Can she survive long enough to discover what’s caused the catastrophe and whether it will happen again?

Two sisters arrive at the family cabin deep in the woods for a gathering that never happens. An old woman finds she’s not quite as prepared for the end of the world as she thought and a Mennonite couple remain true to their faith even as the Great Tribulation unfolds around them.

Each of these unique viewpoints has a part to play as the series unfolds.

Extinction Pulse is the first book in the Nightfall series of post apocalyptic adventure novels. This series focuses on the individual stories of a range of ordinary people as they struggle to cope with the most deadly event since the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs. Themes include EMP, preparedness and an examination of the true nature of humanity when the veneer of civilization is suddenly stripped away.

Mankind is on its knees, and the clock is ticking.

Elijah Wade is an ex Special Forces turned Los Angeles police detective. He's hunting the worst kind of predator, the serial killer who kidnaps and tortures young women.

One crazy day in Glendale, California, while he's narrowing in on his suspect, the sky is inexplicably filled with a rainbow aurora that holds people in thrall staring at it.

As Wade is trying work, he notices people staggering in the street, collapsing and showing fiery, red blisters. He, and his colleagues, quickly try to herd people inside, to no avail.

Meanwhile, in Hawaii, at the observatory on Mauna Kea, the international scientific team experiences the same thing. Only one scientist manages to keep her head enough to take measurements.

All across America, death is falling from the sky, planes are dropping, nothing electronic will work and people are dying of radiation sickness. But no one knows why.

Kev Partner writes a compelling story that examines where humanity begins and ends. I was so sad to find out that the next installment in this series isn't out yet!

I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The positive about this story is in what it is diferent from other emp stories, loved how it began it sure was diferent to have a detective in the Hunt for a serial Killer and his victim.

What started to be not so great (at least for me), it was the introduction of so many people that arent related, and only part of their story is told... I did like Hannah and elijah ( elijah is the main character he defines the story he is the heart, Hannah is for me the Critical scientic eyes to give reason to the story She is the brain), if only their stories were told in this book, we would still have two diferent eyes to the same event and their survival and way less mish mash of stories some with very similar backgrounds, i do like to meet characters and get to know them... But in here i felt cheated of that because i didnt really get to know anyone, like they were dropped in the story and left there...

Grace story and Samuel and Ruth were quite the same but diferent religious sects i imagine, maybe Grace connects with Abby and Rae?, i didnt understand why were both being told, the only diference was One was loving and the other wasnt... Abby and Rae was also something that didnt really apeal to me, at least not without the whole story...

This book had too much and too little at the same time for me, like teased me giving two stories that i wanted more of, this being Said of elijah and Hannah and by giving me Intel in people i didnt care that much because i didnt get to know them enough all the others, those being Grace, Abby and Rae, Samuel and Ruth. And maybe if we had them divided in volumes for each One inside of the same universe, that would've been better, they could still have a twist in the end and all coming together in the end in a last volume

I got an ARC from this book directly from the author and i am leaving this review voluntarily.

Extinction Pulse - a review by Rosemary Kenny.

An EMP Post-Apocalyptic survival story from Kevin Partner sees the trope-with-a-twist, Extinction Pulse series opener start when a technology-destroying event takes out planes, vehicles and all other IT-reliant devices and controls wiped out in an instant, with the resultant loss of life.
This is then given an insane twist, when Borealis-like green lights in the sky 'hypnotise' bystanders into looking up - and losing their eyesight and blistering their skin as if burned by acid rain.

Meanwhile, what's happening at a lab on Mauna Kea, in Hawaii, as a group of scientists study the current events?
What does scientist Hannah experience as a result of the deadly 'light show' overhead?
Flawed but heroic LAPD Officer Elijah Wade is unaffected physically, but emotionally he's torn between fulfilling his sworn duty to serve and protect citizens, but also instinctively wants to catch the serial killer of young women he was closing in on too.
What will he decide to do and whom can he save?

Get Extinction Pulse by Kevin Partner today and settle your nerves (and satisfy your curiosity), by getting all the answers in the palms of your hands!

💙☀️🌅☢ A good start to this anticipation/disaster series.

In his car, Detective Elijah Wade watches the beautiful colored bands that dance in the sky of this early evening.

He takes out a cigarette, lights it and thinks...
The sky was just too weird, giving him goosebumps.

But he was already late for the airport...

-------------

A gripping anticipation/disaster novel that chronicles the disappointments of many people in front of a destructive planetary event.
EMP ? Solar eruption ? The mystery remains...

An intimate and detailed writing , without concessions, which draws the reader in a very believable story.

Lots of different characters to follow, my favorites being Elijah, Hannah, Abby and Rae... and lots of mysteries to try to solve in this great first series to discover.

The premise of the story is quite interesting, though we are not given much about the actual cause, beyond the belief that it does not come from earth (I'm leaning toward a gamma ray burst). I would be interested in some of the science to explain this. Because this is clearly a worldwide event, there are a number of pockets of characters and we see the impact in their area through their eyes, but it did become a bit of a challenge to keep them all straight. I am totally not a fan of the continuing storyline of the vengeful serial killer. That has been done so much in the genre and usually takes away from the actual disaster, which in this case, is very extreme. I do look forward to book 2 and hope the serial killer is not a big deal (and only in an apocalypse can you say something like that).

Not my usual genre, but I know the author from Facebook indie author groups and I was intrigued by the inclusion of a Mennonite couple, so I thought I'd give this a try. I thought it was very well-written with lots of intriguing characters and situations. Alas, because there are so many, the Mennonite couple doesn't get many pages here. I'd thought this was a trilogy. In fact, it's a six-book series, and only the first four are (currently) in audio. So I won't continue, but I'm sad to stop. I thought it was particularly clever and heartbreaking that the radiation poisoning that kills most of humanity is accompanied by beautiful, aurora borealis-like lights in the sky. I would totally be someone who went out to admire them and unknowingly got a fatal dose!

A recurring nightmare

Extinct Pulse is a posted me survival that stands out from the pack with The radiation coming back, seemingly at random. It also adds another layer of danger given people get irradiated any time the "auroras" come back, but they are only visible at night, but people are irradiated during the day with no good way to gauge the danger in daylight. Another thing to like about the book is hat various races and creeds are represented, unlike some similar books with no diversity. Oh, and there's a serial killer back on the loose. Highly recommended for the post-EMP/CME survival thrillers and anyone else looking for a good thriller. A great introduction to a new series. 5/5 stars!

I enjoyed the development of all the characters in this book a great deal, and it is on this basis that I give it four stars. On the other hand, I’m not sure I’ll read the second in the series because the end of this one was rather abrupt and not a plot development I feel that I’ll enjoy. Maybe later.

I did have one major problem that I chose to ignore. The origin of the pulse hasn’t been revealed. I’m left thinking that such a pulse must have come from the sun, but the disaster occurs during the night and the day stays relatively safe. And none of the characters seem to think this is strange, though they do wonder how safe it is. This doesn’t make sense to me. Perhaps all will be revealed if I decide to continue reading. I just wish I had more reason to do so.

Book is okay it just feels disjointed and all over the place. Feel like some of these communities need to be connected somehow but aren't. I also hope they speak about the issue with rain as it may be radioactive. Also animals behaving differently and burning of trees, cities and towns

Don't understand why continue with the killer it is unnecessary already wheb there is more interesting things going on for Elijah

Also why does it seem that people of colour tend to be the bad guy in this book? Like I can only think of one good person of colour and she's married to one of the pov characters.

Excellent end of the world scenario!

When colorful lights fill the night sky, people feel drawn outside to stare at them. What most don't realize until it is too late, is that along with the lights, they are receiving a deadly dose of radiation! The survivors must cooperate to survive. Some choose to help others, while others choose to use the chaos as a way to take over with mob rule! The story follows several different characters with different backgrounds as they make there way in what is left of the world.

Nightfall Book 1 is an excellent start to an apocalyptic series with an original nexus for the apocalypse. Along with plenty of action, Mr. Partner has crafted characters who are not only believable, but easy to identify with. This episode contained a couple of twists that were unexpected and have whet my appetite for the next book in the series. I received an Advance Reeder Copy and chose to provide this review.

There are multiple points of view, and a lot of characters, but they feel distinct. The pacing pushes you through the story without feeling lost. The plot is somewhat plausible but the author doesn't drive so deep into the science to slow the pace.

I would rate this 3.5 stars. It was well written and shifted from group to group which I found added to the story. We want to find out what caused the issue and we do not find out in the 1st of the series.

It's a long time since I lost a night's sleep reading but last night flew past. I will be reading the rest and give you a full review but on the first it was worth losing a night's sleep.

Plausible

An excellent start to a series, great characters, awesome story telling. A seemingly impossible and devastating future, and yet entirely plausible.
I will continue this series with anticipation

A good read but

I liked the story but sometimes the sentence structure made it hard to understand where the author was going. I do plan to move on to the next book in the series.

Kev Partner is one of my favorite authors but he surpassed my expectations with this apocalyptic thriller! I’ve read many variations of EMP disasters but this one is definitely the most tumultuous and hard hitting. There are quite a few characters so plenty of POV’s which provide mystery and questions for later answers. I can hardly wait to read book two. I highly recommend it.

Disclaimer: I received a ARC from the author and this is my honest and unsolicited opinion.

There are quite a few of this kind of book out nowadays, so the trick for me is to see whether this author has brought something new, different, or distinctive to the mix. The answer was yes, although not dramatically different, but by setting the two seemingly main characters to have their own unusual circumstances, that sufficed for me.
Those circumstances are in the blurb, so there are no horrid spoilers if I say that one of the people is on the hunt for a serial killer, and the other at an observatory where a large bunch of scientists act very unscientifically. The author has tried to explain this away by the aurora they are observing being extremely mesmerising, but it was a shame that more of them didn't behave a little more scientifically. Oh well...
There are other characters with different stories, but although the book does leap about a bit, I had little problem following the individual stories, and I am intrigued to see how they will be brought together.
I did enjoy the book, and am looking forward to the sequel, and if you like scifi, apocalyptic or dystopian books, then I would give this a try!
