I still am not totally sure whether Kera was just addicted to magic or TSTL, but I don't care anymore.

Her ego is astounding. She's a superpowered self-absorbed asshole who thinks only she can stop crime in LA. It doesn't appeal because... I don't know. She doesn't have a single speck of common sense. She's not fighting on an even playing field - she has super powers so incident after incident is her kicking the crap out of regular petty criminals that she overpowers as easily as an adult beating on a kindergartener. She slings around her mind-wipe spell everywhere happily - even using it on friends and considering using it on her date, which was so unbelievably gross to me. You want to be a good guy? Then take some goddamn responsibility for your actions for a change.

I bailed when I realized I was white-knuckling my way through the book just hoping she ran into someone she couldn't overpower and got the shit kicked out of her.

To be fair, today of all days this probably hit me worse than ever - spending the day watching vigilantes try to stage a coup really erased my tolerance for egotistical assholes and their own special brand of justice. But I was reacting to most of this same stuff in book 1, and it just continued to get worse here, so I'm out.

Great continuation of the series.

Kera is learning more and more about her craft, all the while trying to stop the gangs taking over.

Mr and Mrs Kim have 'adopted' her and have started training her to make her better and stronger without having to use up her magic reserves.

Kera's getting closer to Christian but at the end of the book, she has to do something heartbreaking - hopefully she can put things right in the next book.

Great series as usual from MA.

4 Curses, Foiled Again Stars

How To Be A Badass Witch: Book Two of the series, by Michael Anderle.

So, this book was just as confusing as the first. Mainly in where I place my bookmarks, since I use them to bracket interconnected scenes before moving onto the next. The way Anderle switches between POV and narrative is mildly jolting. And, at least, slightly frustrating. This was a decent continuation in Kera’s journey, but I am of course upset over James and Mother LeBlanc having to take a detour on their trip to meeting her.

I’m wondering what kind of aggravating clusterfuck will manifest from them forming an alliance of sorts with the FBI. I have concerns. Because while partnering with them in the limited purview Mother has outlined will most likely end fairly. It will also give the government insight to start orchestrating a S. H. E. I. L. D. type branch to augment the damage bad users of the craft can inflict on innocents and counterattack against any disagreements the future may bring between witches as a whole and more mundane civilization.

Oof. To Chris. I’m upset. It does feel forced. I get where Anderle is coming from because I have this same thought when reading often. But I don’t think it was entirely necessary? I wonder how long until Kera imagines it’s safe to invite him back into her life, if she’ll give up. And yet again, how her meeting with James and LeBlanc will affect her plans for the future.

It seems Pauline isn’t done, even though the Union is bowing out for now. I’m left questioning whether Kera will be able to bring down not only the gangs, but this woman (who is honestly thinking frighteningly similar to Deke the crazy bomber) with bigger plans at play.

Really enjoying this series

Kept me glued to my Kindle, read straight through two the end in one day. This book/series has all the things I enjoy in a book: exciting action scenes, well developed characters, magic, awesome dialog, just the right amount of humor and a great "Badass" leading character! Anyone who enjoys Urban Fantasy with all the above and much more should enjoy this book.
As someone who never leaves home without her Kindle and has purchased many a book on a whim, I had to laugh when the leading lady discovered she was a witch from doing just that in the first book of this series.
The secondary characters are just was well developed. The unexpected secrets of the Kim's brings more depth to the journey as Kera works to get a handle in her new powers. But my absolute favorites are Mother LeBlanc and James Lovecraft, who are following the power surges that indicate the use of magic. James had published the Kindle book to help find new witches to fill out the dwindling number of magic users. The two opposite personalities complement each other in humorless and intriguing ways. I look forward two what Mother LeBlanc will pull out of her dress next in future books in this series.
This is a great book/series to escape the frustrations that define 2020. Relax with a chuckle or two while enjoying some great stories. Can't wait until book 3 is out! Can always count in an enjoyable read when I see Michael Anderle's name on the 'cover'! Thanks Michael for another great read! 🤗🤶

Very funny. At times it’s clear that the main character is a female written by a male, little quirks here and there. But overall, it’s a fun book.

Favorite quotes:

The last time I got one[a car], I chose it because it was the only one on the Venn diagram that was in the overlap between ‘Can Afford’ and ‘Won’t Kill Me.’”

“Six-ingredient guacamole,” she murmured. “Let’s see… Avocado, check. Lime, check. Salt, check. Garlic…supposed to be fresh, but we’ll say powder is good enough. Red onion, nope. Cilantro, also nope. Okay, four-ingredient guacamole, it is.”

“Which one of you,” he asked politely, “drives in the most insane, dangerous way?” Of the four rickshaw drivers, three of them uniformly pointed at the fourth, a scrawny-looking girl with blue hair and a nose piercing. She glared back. “Excellent,” James said. He pulled two hundred dollar bills out of his wallet. “Turn it up to 11, would you? We’re just going to shout directions at you randomly.” Beside him, Mother LeBlanc was laughing helplessly.

What about fog? That’s just half-condensed water vapor. Yeah, we’ll go with that.”

In the distance, she could hear sirens. Someone must have noticed the exceedingly subtle maneuver of driving five cars through a locked warehouse gate.

So Yeah I broke a few rules

I could not finish. I read the first one. Ended w that ?😕?. Bcuz i like the author. But reading it i couldn't get over how off she was on her, "gut feeling" about the grimoire. Especially when she used to think/hope there was a contact.. So it's already been set up w an anti vigilante undercurrent, read the blurbs for the rest of the series. 🤨 I realize stories need plots, and challenges and conflict, but the ones chosen just don't seem to fit for me. It's too angsty, too much stress. Dating, harasser, council, mob, her bad/unpracticed gut... All really makes for not fun... Nowhere w Zee, maybe will animate it w magic later, but slightly bipolar, i.e. the color change, to the weird gift was like try to hide some foreshadowing in there very awkwardly... Yeah, no. Not for me.

Too much to handle?

Kera is getting into a situation that is running away from her. Luckily she is now looked on as family by the Kims who know and understand her more than anyone else. But she has difficult decisions to make and she’s the only one who can make them.
The Kims have taken her into their family and she finds a haven where she can talk about what she is going through.
Meantime, the various gangs are becoming increasingly wary of taking on the LA Witches and Motorcycle Man. Pauline and the Startups are or determined than ever to take them down.
Being a Badass Witch is no longer as much fun as it was.

I hate crying!!!

Nothing worse than tears on Christmas night, even if they come from the book you are reading. Book two is none stop action, and more feels than you can shake a wand at! The best thing about these tears is that I already have the next book downloaded and ready to go. I hope our bad ass can figure out her magic and her heart. I love the series so far, and hope that there will be more to come. Oh, and Mr. Anderle, can I put in an order for my own magical dress?

Not really liking James and LaBlanc really as characters they seem too quick to simply strip people of power. I mean they pretty much fall under my way or the highway mindset when they were the ones to cause the problem in the first place. As for Kera, she seems pretty awesome in this book though that ending kind of made me want to whack her in the back of the head and ask what the heck she was thinking I mean really?

Choices

Kera is getting better with her power. She still has trouble with the clash of morality contrasted with her happiness and safety. She would like to slow down with her use of magic, but the gangs of LA continue to harm people and she feels a duty to intervene. I like the action, humor, and romance. I look forward to the next book.

Kera The Paranormal Hero

Kera deals with the gang unrest and various emergency situations that occur. All while trying to have a life. It's tough to balance all the sides of her life.

(Spoiler alert)

I like the ending, although not all will, as it is most likely a temporary setback.

Looking forward to seeing how it plays out in the nrxt book.

Good story, needs editing

I’m really enjoying the base story but there are some weird inconsistencies between second and third person that affect the flow of the storytelling. And avocados...no cores, maybe don’t try to incorporate a recipe into your book if you don’t know the ingredients.

Nice

Isn't there a law of unintended consequences? That's what this entire series is. One unintended stupid consequence after another. From the guy on the council releasing a real magic book into the world to the idiots who decide to use magic to rob a bank to ... well you get the idea. The only person who isn't stupid is the MC and that includes what she does at the end!

DIY magic

Magic is real and if you have a talent for it it can be learned. The people who have taught magic in the past have not had any new students in a very long time. They are concerned enough to put a book of spells on to the internet in a attempt to locate talented students but the plan was not well thought out....

Good book

I enjoyed the read. I like the story, the characters (other than the bad guys but you are not supposedto like them), most everything about the read. Even the more boring/ mundane stuff kept me going slop I could see where things go. Hopefully I can get the next one.

Fantastic

As usual everything this author writes is solid gold. The storyline is intricate with lots of action. Characters even the secondary ones are well drawn. Humor abounds but with a touch of pathos. Loved this book and can't wait for more to follow in this series.

Kera's on her way to be a badass witch.

I love how Mr Anderle makes characters come to life. I also appreciate his preference for strong female leads for the stories. Looking forward to Kera's choices as she shapes her future as a badass witch.

Thoughtful story

Another really great story about learning to be a great witch from a book. It is good that Kera already has some martial arts skills and she is a quick study. She has a heart of gold and truly wants to help others. Lots of exciting kicking but in this one!!!!

Fantastic series, from the first page couldn’t put it down. I’m intrigued where this is going, either the multiple threads. Very sad for the choice Kera has to make. Hope this is as long running as the TKG series.

Not really a sunshine day

What is the best way to describe a hero? Lonely...can there be love if you have dedicated your life to protect others? When the enemy forces are after you, can you risk your close friends to that danger? A good if a little depressing read.

Action and more action

A lot more action in this one and of course we see what it will cost in blood and tears. The story has developed well and how the council will intervene looks interesting as well.

This book picks up right where the first one left off. Kera is still playing at being Batgirl, but the baddies are aware of her and starting to come after her.
Same humorous style, with plenty of asses being kicked and dealing with her job and her parents' expectations.

You are crazy MA

Again, MA make a decision branch will end up in a flurry of readers angst just like when he kill the Patriarch, where MA end up creating a whole new series just to make sure the Patriarch alive again. Let's see what will come up from this fork...

Learning to be a witch.

How would you be if you had to Learn how to be a power? Kera has to do that, and her choice to help others makes it even harder. A good story all around, I recommend it.

The fun continues!

This might bring to mind pulp fiction writing of yesteryear. Not a problem! It's got characters that you can love. Fast action. Surprises and tension without nail biting. A roller coaster ride of fun for everyone!
