Handle Me with Care by Helen J Rolfe is the first novel I've read by this author. Beforehand, I'd seen a fair few book-bloggers enthusing about it, so my interest was definitely piqued. When the author approached me in regards to reading and reviewing, I couldn't say yes fast enough. The blurb, coupled with such a gorgeous cover, enticed me completely, even more so when I realised that this wasn't going to be just any romance. The blurb hinted towards topics that would never offer the characters within an easy ride, but more than that, I really wanted to see how the characters would develop and grow throughout the novel, given their separate circumstances. Quite simply, it sounded to me like these characters were going to be put through their paces, which would only result in stronger people by the end of the novel. I couldn't wait to begin.

Helen begins Handle Me with Care with a highly amusing scene which had me stifling my giggles with my hand. An avid baker, not only due to her obvious talents but also because it allows her to forget, Maddie delivers a risqué cake to a one-hundredth birthday party by mistake. Amongst the smirks and giggles, this is where she first sets eyes on Evan, and pretty much Maddie and Evan's beautiful story begins. I loved that Helen chose to open the book in such a fun, carefree way. In the throes of the birthday party, it was clear to me (and Maddie), that between she and Evan, there was an instant connection, almost like love at first sight. The glances and smiles reeled me in completely and it felt as though Maddie and Evan had created a bubble around themselves, no-one else included within it. I knew from this point that there was something special about these two, it was clear for everyone to see, including Evan's gran Jem, who insisted that they seemed just right for each other, and who also added so much warmth to this scene. With the party atmosphere, it was impossible for me not to be sucked into it all and revel in the new-found chemistry that was zipping between Evan and Maddie. I was incredibly eager to see where life would take these two characters, although I had an inkling that it wouldn't be a smooth ride for either of them.

Helen's character development in Handle Me with Care was flawless. From beginning to end, watching Maddie and Evan change and grow, apart and together, was absolutely beautiful. Maddie was damaged, and quite understandably so. Since she'd lost the love of her life Riley in the 9/11 attacks, she'd kept her heart close and rather than get involved in any relationships which would put her at risk of deep loss once more, she'd chosen to stay casual whenever it came to romance. Considering what she'd went through, I really couldn't blame her. It was obvious that the loss of Riley had left Maddie with some horrific scars, scars that encouraged her to hold back whenever the idea of 'something more' happened to crop up. Helen did such an exquisite job of splaying Maddie's emotions out for me to get a good look at. Every feeling, every emotion, it all made perfect sense to me. I was able to understand Maddie's reasoning perfectly, could understand why she'd rather not become involved with anyone else, and it only made me love her more as a heroine. Her worries and fears were rational, and I couldn't help but to agree with how she felt about certain things. She was terrified, petrified even, of having the same thing happen to her again, and this shone through beautifully in the author's descriptions of Maddie's inner thoughts and feelings. She was such a complex character, scared and hidden away beneath her own personal armour that had been built by her past. There was nothing I wanted more than for Maddie to find her second chance, to be able to let the demons of her past go and learn to move on. I felt so connected to Helen's characters, so much so that by the end of this novel, I was reluctant to say goodbye to them. They were pure magic, perhaps a tad frustrating at times when fate continued to keep them apart, but wonderful nonetheless.

Everything in this novel worked for me. The stunning Australian setting, the sparks and ribbons of chemistry that wrapped around Helen's heroine and hero, the barriers each of them had built up, and the sheer, emotional strength it took to take those barriers back down. It was more than a romance, it was a display of trust and courage, intimacy and belief, letting go and finally being able to move forward in life, despite what had gone before.

I absolutely loved this novel. It was beautifully moving, with equally beautiful characters and descriptions that made this a truly special story. It's about taking chances, being brave and learning to love again, no matter how terrifying it may seem. Becca's Books is awarding Handle Me with Care by Helen J Rolfe with five gorgeous cupcakes! Maddie thinks she's had her one chance at true love. She used to have it all and was so happy, but then she lost her boyfriend in the 9/11 attacks. He was temporarily living his dream and working in New York before coming back to Australia to be with Maddie again. Now she's on her own, she has been ever since. She's working as a physiotherapist and bakes cakes in her spare time. Because she's great at making cakes she often gets special requests. When she delivers one at the wrong party she meets Evan.

Evan and Maddie have something special. They instantly like each other and it could be more. Unfortunately there are some obstacles. Maddie can't forget her past and falling in love with Evan is a big risk. He has testicular cancer and there is a chance he might not survive, just like her first boyfriend. Evan finds it difficult to deal with his diagnosis and isn't really ready to share everything he's going through with someone he's just met. Do Evan and Maddie have a chance or do the circumstances prevent them from finding out if they can have something good together?

Handle Me with Care is an emotional story about two people who both have a lot of baggage. While Maddie's problems have begun a long time ago Evan's have just started. The timing is completely wrong while they could have had something special. I felt so bad for them because of what happens to them in their lives. They both deserved something good, but there were many obstacles. I often had tears in my eyes and could sympathize with both Evan and Maddie. I kept wanting to give both of them a hug.

Helen J Rolfe knows how to tell a story. This isn't a standard love story, but it's definitely romantic. I think she handles sensitive topics in a considerate and caring way which made the story feel very realistic. She lets her readers come really close to the main characters, which is something I love about her writing. I read this book with a sob and a smile. I cheered for Maddie and Evan when they were making progress. I also wanted them to become close as they could certainly use each other's support. A seaside holiday eventually makes a big difference for both of them and I liked the way faith helped them a little, which is exactly as it should be. I think Helen J Rolfe has written a fantastic story. There's a lot of grief, but she knows how to prevent it from becoming too heavy. The balance is exactly right. This is another strong point, there are quite many and together they are making Handle Me With Care such a good book.

I was instantly attracted to this book my the gorgeous cover and the title which suggested an emotional read. Maddie and Evan both need to be handled with care. Years on from the atrocities of the 9/11 attacks, Maddie still hasn't come to terms with the loss of her boyfriend who was in the Twin Towers for a meeting that day. She's scared of finding happiness again in case lightning strikes twice. However, with a string of meaningless one-night-stands behind her, she's never found someone to whom she's want to get close. Until she meets Evan. Problem is, that lightning could well strike twice because Evan's found a lump and his future looks uncertain.

I loved this book. The lead characters are warm, and their concerns about the future are presented realistically. A great cast of characters are there to support them - Maddie's best friend and family and Evan's family - but the book realistically explores how it's sometimes difficult to let people in when there's so much going on in your head and your heart.

The settings are described beautifully and, although I've never visited any of the places, I could visualise them and wanted to jump on a plane to the other side of the world!

I'd really enjoyed The Friendship Tree and had already given a 5-star review, but I loved this book even more ... but there are no more stars to award! Looking forward to Helen J Rolfe's next one.

I'm not quite sure how to review this book. I neither loved it or hated it. I felt like I was reading two separate stories: Maddies journey through her grief and then Evan's journey through cancer. It didn't really feel like a love story in the sense of them getting to know each other. They had interrupted dates and fractured meetings but, somehow, they still fell in love. It didn't seem genuine or connected. 2.5-3 stars.

Na urodziny 100 – letniej Jem przez pomyłkę trafia tort w kształcie…. penisa i mimo, że sama tudzież 100-letnia solenizantka jest owym tortem zachwycona, to dla samej Maddie, będącej jego autorką, to sytuacja bez precedensu, która nigdy nie miała prawa się zdarzyć. Ale jak to czasem w życiu być potrafi – nie ma niczego złego, co by na dobre nie wyszło. W wyniku fatalnej – (a może i nie?)- pomyłki, Maddie poznaje przystojnego Evana, dzięki któremu zaczyna wierzyć, że znowu może być szczęśliwa. Podczas pierwszej randki, Evan chcąc być szczerym w stosunku do Maddie, postanawia podzielić się z nią informacją odnośnie stanu swojego zdrowia, która – być może – zaważy na ich przyszłych relacjach o ile zdecydują się kontynuować znajomość zwłaszcza, że oboje są po przejściach, które są dodatkowym obciążeniem dla ich już i tak kruchego związku….
Czy tych dwoje na przekór wszystkiemu, zaryzykuje wspólny start w przyszłość?

Nie jest to zła książka, ale też nie jest jakoś specjalnie rewelacyjna. Na pewno ma potencjał ale niedostatecznie wykorzystany – można było jeszcze więcej wycisnąć z tej historii. Czytało się dobrze, szybko ale też i czasem odnosiłam wrażenie, że relacje między Evanem a Maddie są zbyt płytkie. Bardziej odpowiednie byłoby tutaj twierdzenie brak romansu w romansie – nie czuć chemii między bohaterami, ani tej iskry przyciągania jaka zazwyczaj ma miejsce w relacjach dwojga zainteresowanych sobą ludzi. Wydawałoby się też, że jako osoby dorosłe, powinny jakoś bardziej odpowiedzialnie i świadomie rozwiązywać swoje problemy więc ciężko było mi zrozumieć ich niedojrzałe podejście do stanów własnych uczuć jak i ich problemów, których – gwoli ścisłości – sami byli autorami. Kolejnym „alergicznym” minusem, którego bardzo w książkach nie lubię, są niedopracowania językowe. Tutaj tym felernym alergenem okazały się niektóre zdania, trochę nieskładnie skonstruowane, wymuszające na mnie stopowanie czytania, żeby wyłowić kontekst wypowiedzi. Nie jest na szczęście tego aż tak dużo, więc nie sądzę, żeby książka jakoś drastycznie miała stracić na jakości. Zwróciłam na to uwagę, bo zwracam zawsze przy czytaniu każdej, jednej książki, ot! Skrzywienie zawodowe i tyle w temacie.
Poza tymi defektami, opisana w książce historia ma też swoje plusy, do których jako najważniejszy zalicza się ważny temat choroby nowotworowej u mężczyzn. Bardzo dużo mówi się o profilaktyce leczenia raka piersi u kobiet, podczas gdy kwestia męskich nowotworów pomijana jest milczeniem. Fabuła jest minimalnie przepełniona smutkiem i emocjami ale nie brakuje w niej też elementów zabawnych jak i przepełnionych nadzieją, że pomimo traumatycznych wydarzeń nie należy się poddawać i że czas „żałoby” w sercu kiedyś się skończy. Każda tragedia wymaga przepracowania we własnym wnętrzu i w konfrontacji z wydarzeniami bądź osobami, które sprawiają nam ból. Warto znaleźć w sobie siłę ‘….. by ponownie wsiąść na rower i pedałować w równym tempie aż na sam szczyt” .

„Życie to coś więcej niż tylko codzienny wdech i wydech- to delektowanie się każdą chwilą i wypełnianie życia ludźmi którzy cię kochają i z którymi możesz dzielić przyszłość”.

11 września 2001 roku Nowy Jork wstrzymuje oddech. W ataku terrorystycznym na World Trade Center giną setki ludzi. Wśród ofiar jest Riley chłopak Maddie którego kochała ponad wszystko z kt��rym planowała się zestarzeć.
Od tamtych wydarzeń minęło już dużo czasu jednak Maddie nie potrafi związać się z żadnym mężczyzną na dłużej. Być może nadal nie pogodziła się że stratą ukochanego. Sytuacja zmienia się w dniu kiedy z tortem w kształcie penisa trafia nie na tę imprezę co trzeba. Stuletnia solenizantka jest zachwycona wypiekiem jak i samą Maddie a w jej głowie rodzi się plan zeswatania jej ze swoim wnukiem. O dziwo Evan i Maddie szybko łapią wspólny język i już niebawem idą na randkę. Jest cudownie a dziewczyna czuje że w końcu trafiła na mężczyznę z którym mogłaby zbudować trwały związek. Wtedy jednak Evan rzuca jej w twarz informację która szybko sprowadza ją na ziemię.

„Zaopiekuj się mną” to poruszająca historia dwojga dojrzałych ludzi którzy pomimo przeciwności losu próbują normalnie żyć. Bardzo cenię książki które w swojej treści zawierają jakieś przekaz, która zmuszają do refleksji. I to jest taka właśnie książka. Mówi, że nie powinniśmy oglądać się za siebie. Nie możemy się cofać ani stać w miejscu. Powinniśmy iść ciągle do przodu nawet gdyby nasze kroki miały być malutkie.
Powieść uświadamia jak ważne jest wsparcie drugiego człowieka. Zawsze powinien być obok nas ktoś z kim możemy porozmawiać, doradzić się, kto w potrzebie poda przysłowiową szklankę wody. Nikt nie powinien być sam. Książka uświadamia jeszcze jedną rzecz mianowicie że czas owszem leczy rany i uśmierza ból ale nigdy nie zlikwiduje powstałych na duszy i sercu blizn.

„Zaopiekuj się mną” pomimo podejmowanych przez autorkę trudnych i bolesnych tematów jest książką którą czyta się przyjemnie. Bardzo podoba mi się to że autorka nie wymusza emocji. Historia jest poruszająca to fakt ale nie wyciska na siłę łez jak to często bywa z powieściami z motywem choroby. Mam nadzieję że wiecie o co mi chodzi.☺️

My word what a wonderful read and so heartbreaking but heartwarming to. Many ups and downs but can people be happy again after heartbreak or will things be a difficult road. Plenty of romance and being truthful and the characters are brilliant didn't want to put the book down.
Maddie lost the love of her life in 9/11 and she believes she lost her life then to. But this day she's delivering a cake to a 100 year old man but delivers the wrong cake. She meets Evan and they both got it off. But he's single but thinks he's got cancer and on their first date he is open with Maddie that he has cancer so with a rocky road can they be happy together or not. She will also learn things about her love of her life when she starts opening boxes in order to move forward. Can she be happy with Evan or does she not want to be hurt again.

Takie o. Historia niby ciekawa i pouczająca, jednak nie za dużo w tym wszystkim mocniejszego wydźwięku. Po między bohaterami tak na prawdę nie ma żadnej chemii, przez co trudno mi było uwierzyć w tę miłość. Poza tym przez większość czasu czułam się jak bym czytała kontynuacje jakiejś serii, gdzie Maddie i Evan byliby postaciami pobocznymi, a w "Zaopiekuj się mną" dostali swój moment na opowiedzenie historii. Zwłaszcza czułam to przez styl autorki, która potrafiła wrzucić czytelnika w historie, nie tłumacząc najważniejszych kwestii.

Ahhh, such a heart-warming example of ‘lust at first sight’; locking eyes with a handsome fellow as you’re making a delivery to your clients, feeling THE connection to a complete stranger. -swoons-. The feeling of lust continues as all you can think about is the man you just met whilst delivering a cake, an erotic cake, to a 100th birthday party (accidentally). Now THAT is a story to tell the grandkids when they’re older. Not you obviously, Maddie. The thing is, Maddie’s heart has been under lock and key for many years and she is afraid to let another man have the key. Will Maddie ever let herself be loved by another man, again? Will the erotic cake be the key to her happiness? Or will Maddie’s fear of getting hurt, happen all over again?

-hangs head in shame- Helen, please forgive me! You were the very first author to follow me on Twitter, yet this book has been sitting on my Kindle for a couple of months, un-read. Sniff. But, it most certainly was worth the wait!

The erotic cake saga had me in hysterics! I could just imagine seeing all of the 100-year-old ladies (or thereabouts) with huge smiles on their faces. The whole saga was such a refreshing way to start a chick flick, completely different to anything that I have read before. It just worked, plus for me, it set the bar high for the rest of the book.

Maddie has definitely had her fair share of heartbreak and due to a lack of communication, the heartbreak is still as raw now, as it was back then. Her confidence is knocked and she believes that she isn’t worth loving again. But is that because she won’t let herself be loved? Maddie’s future was ‘mapped’ out, she was excited and looking forward to it. Then one day, the rug got pulled from under her, and many others. Lives would never be the same again…

My heart went out to Maddie, it was such a shame to see the burden that she was carrying on her shoulders, still present after all those years. I just wanted to give her a big hug. As soon as Evan came into the picture, his character brought a whole new dimension to the book. Not only was he Australian and rather dashing, (thanks to Helen’s description), he was also such an intense character to get to know.

After reading the first few chapters, the storyline went up a few notches in terms of emotion and intensity, and I wasn’t quite prepared for my reaction to it. By this point in the story, I had gelled with both main characters and felt really involved in their lives as well as the main storyline, so when either of them received news of any sort, I reacted. I was in shock with Evan’s news and I must say, I did get rather miffed with Maddie’s reaction to it (see, I do get involved!!).

I thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘Handle Me With Care’. Whilst the storyline was full of raw emotions and the fear of the unknown, it was also full of hilarious one liners, dry humour and underlined the fact that laughter is the best medicine for some people.

Helen Rolfe has written such an emotional rollercoaster of a story which highlights the importance of self-awareness and self discovery. ‘Handle Me With Care’ is a refreshingly different take on a chick flick that will also have you becoming best buds with Andrex tissue.

Unless you’re made of stone and allergic to Andrex tissue, there is a high chance that you will cry whilst reading ‘Handle Me With Care’. Not only that, you will probably google erotic cakes and become proud of the person that YOU are; purely for being you. Please do remember ‘if in doubt, check it out’.

A highly emotive book that tackled some really big issues. I won’t lie my emotions were all over the place reading the book the memories of 9/11 were something I wasn’t expecting.

Although I loved the story and the feeling it evoked I did not like the writing style.

On September 11th 2001, the worlds worst terrrorr attacks in New York had changed Maddie's life. Maddie's boyfriend Riley was working in New York, and that morning he had a meeting in the North Tower of the World Trade Center. On that day Maddie lost her one true love. When Maddie delivers an erotic cake to a one-hundredth birthday party by mistake Evan's and Maddies paths cross for the first time.They'd only exchanged a few words, but it hadn't lessend Maddies reaction to Evan. Since Riley, no other man had made her this nervous. Evan had stirred up feelings Maddie had thought she would never know again. Somehow they clicked, and it' as though they've known each other for a lot longer than they actually have. Maddie wasn't sure wheter anyone got two chances at real happiness, but maybe, Evan was the man to make her take a risk and try again. Can Maddie make peace with the past and finally let herself be happy again?

Descriptive words to describe this novel would be - stunning, fabulous, emotional, flawless and amazing! 100% worth it. Handle Me with Care is a beautifully written, moving, heartwarming and heartbreaking must-read story. The main and other characters are very well-developed as is the unique and fascinating plot, all set in a location that will both enthrall and intrigue the reader.

Helen's writing enchanted me from the very first moment on. She has an inncredible talent for writing. I really enjoying the author's calm and detailed writing style, even though I did occasionally feel like more could have happened in the story.  

This book gripped me that much and I really didn't want to put it down. I wanted to continue reading through each new chapter that I came to because even though the journey may have been emotional and sweet it was a wonderful one. I absolutely love the real life element of this story, the plot could actually be anyone of our lives.Told from both main characters characters’ perspectives, the author brought this story alive. All I can say is thank you to this fabulous author for bringing this story to my attention. It's one you do not want to miss out on!

Wychodzenie ze strefy komfortu zawsze jest… niekomfortowe. Nie ukrywam, że większość czytelniczego czasu pochłaniają u mnie thrillery i powieści sensacyjne. Literatura obyczajowa, a tym bardziej romanse rzadko goszczą na mojej półce. Żeby się oderwać, żeby coś zmienić - czasem mam ochotę przeczytać zupełnie coś innego.
Po „Zaopiekuj się mną” Helen J. Rolfe sięgnęłam zachęcona obiecywanym australijskim słońcem. Tym bardziej, że koniec lata pogodowo nie rozpieszczał. Główną bohaterką jest Maddie Kershaw, której mężczyzna życia zginął w zamachu terrorystycznym 11 września 2001 roku. Maddie choć próbuje, nie potrafi wyzbyć się wrażenia, że był to ten jedyny, wybrany i nikt go nie zastąpi. Wchodzi jedynie w płytkie relacje, kończące się na wspólnej nocy, boi się zaangażowania. Jej hobby jest pieczenie artystycznych tortów – pewnego dnia myli zamówienia i na urodziny stulatki przywozi erotyczny tort. Poznaje tam Evana Quinna, zatwardziałego kawalera. Kobieta wpada mu w oko… Czy Maddie otworzy się na nową relację?
Powieść wpisuje się w gatunek od pierwszej strony. Styl autorki jest lekki, fabuła biegnie niespiesznie i taki rytm utrzymuje się do końca. Od początku będzie wiadomo, że między Maddie i Evan’em zawiąże się głębsza relacja. „Zaopiekuj się mną” to bardziej romans niż powieść obyczajowa, choć autorka nie boi się trudnych tematów. Już na pierwszym spotkaniu Evan zdobywa się na szczerość i wyznaje Maddie, że jest tuż przed diagnozą raka jądra. Szczerze zdziwił mnie ten fakt, bo „spowiedź” mężczyzny wydaje się być mocno nierealna.
Wydawca zachęcał australijskim słońcem i tego w powieści najbardziej zabrakło. Gdyby wpleść w wydarzenia wątki związane z Australią byłoby przyjemniej, a tak zaledwie kilka razy pojawia się w tekście fakt związany z tym kontynentem. Bez Australii jest przeciętnie i do przewidzenia. I zbyt dużo cukru i lukru (dosłownie, bo Maddie piecze torty), z drugiej strony takie jest prawo gatunku. Historia trochę niepoukładana, trochę nielogiczna. I to spory minus. Do tego sposób przedstawienia bohaterów nie zachęca na tyle by kibicować ich relacji, życzyć zdrowia Evan’owi czy potrząsnąć Maddie by wreszcie zaczęła cieszyć się życiem.
Nie było źle, było gatunkowo poprawnie. Pamiętajcie, że fanką gatunku nie jestem, stąd może zbyt krytyczne podejście. Dla miłośników ciepłych i pokrzepiających historii „Zaopiekuj się mną” będzie wyborem idealnym.

„Życie to coś więcej niż tylko codzienny wdech i wydech- to delektowanie się każdą chwilą i wypełnianie życia ludźmi którzy cię kochają i z którymi możesz dzielić przyszłość”.

11 września 2001 roku Nowy Jork wstrzymuje oddech. W ataku terrorystycznym na World Trade Center giną setki ludzi. Wśród ofiar jest Riley chłopak Maddie którego kochała ponad wszystko z którym planowała się zestarzeć.
Od tamtych wydarzeń minęło już dużo czasu jednak Maddie nie potrafi związać się z żadnym mężczyzną na dłużej. Być może nadal nie pogodziła się że stratą ukochanego. Sytuacja zmienia się w dniu kiedy z tortem w kształcie penisa trafia nie na tę imprezę co trzeba. Stuletnia solenizantka jest zachwycona wypiekiem jak i samą Maddie a w jej głowie rodzi się plan zeswatania jej ze swoim wnukiem. O dziwo Evan i Maddie szybko łapią wspólny język i już niebawem idą na randkę. Jest cudownie a dziewczyna czuje że w końcu trafiła na mężczyznę z którym mogłaby zbudować trwały związek. Wtedy jednak Evan rzuca jej w twarz informację która szybko sprowadza ją na ziemię.

„Zaopiekuj się mną” to poruszająca historia dwojga dojrzałych ludzi którzy pomimo przeciwności losu próbują normalnie żyć. Bardzo cenię książki które w swojej treści zawierają jakieś przekaz, która zmuszają do refleksji. I to jest taka właśnie książka. Mówi, że nie powinniśmy oglądać się za siebie. Nie możemy się cofać ani stać w miejscu. Powinniśmy iść ciągle do przodu nawet gdyby nasze kroki miały być malutkie.
Powieść uświadamia jak ważne jest wsparcie drugiego człowieka. Zawsze powinien być obok nas ktoś z kim możemy porozmawiać, doradzić się, kto w potrzebie poda przysłowiową szklankę wody. Nikt nie powinien być sam. Książka uświadamia jeszcze jedną rzecz mianowicie że czas owszem leczy rany i uśmierza ból ale nigdy nie zlikwiduje powstałych na duszy i sercu blizn.

„Zaopiekuj się mną” pomimo podejmowanych przez autorkę trudnych i bolesnych tematów jest książką którą czyta się przyjemnie. Bardzo podoba mi się to że autorka nie wymusza emocji. Historia jest poruszająca to fakt ale nie wyciska na siłę łez jak to często bywa z powieściami z motywem choroby. Mam nadzieję że wiecie o co mi chodzi.☺️

To nie jest zła książka, nie jest też rewelacyjna na tyle, żebym była nią zachwycona i żeby wpadła mi w pamięć. Ta książka po prostu... Jest. Mam duży love-hate relationship z nią, bo z jednej strony jest niezwykle urocza, a z drugiej strony mamy dwójkę bohaterów, którzy nijak nie potrafią zachowywać się dorośle i odpowiedzialnie w stosunku do własnych uczuć. Zwyczajnie w świecie mnie drażnili swoją relacją. Potrafię ich zrozumieć, ale nie oznacza to, że padnę z zachwytu.

Czy prawdziwa miłość zdarza się częściej niż raz w życiu? Maddie Kershaw wcale nie jest przekonana. W ataku terrorystycznym 11 września 2001 roku życie stracił chłopak, którego uważała za tego jedynego - jej wielka miłość. Od tamtej pory Maddie sądzi, że jedyne, co jej zostało, to wdawanie się w liczne romanse.

Dużym plusem tej książki jest to, że cała akcja dzieje się w Australii, którą tak bardzo kiedyś chciałabym odwiedzić. Może to poniekąd było impulsem, dla którego zdecydowałam się sięgnąć po ten tytuł? Bardzo podobało mi się, że poza typowym skupieniem się na relacji głównych bohaterów przewija się wciąż wątek nowotworu jądra u Evana. Wiele mówi się o profilaktyce raka piersi u kobiet, a tak niewiele o męskich nowotworach. Cieszy mnie zwracanie uwagi nawet w mniej wymagających lekturach na takie poważne problemy.

Jednak! Żeby nie było tak super kolorowo - jak wspomniałam już na początku, drażniła mnie relacja głównych bohaterów. Jedno się odsuwa, drugie go pragnie i odwrotnie. Zabawa w kotka i myszkę, a ostatecznie główny bohater to pies ogrodnika. Od początku czuć było między nimi chemię, która była cudowna, ale skomplikowanie ich relacji było zwyczajnie denerwujące, żeby tu nie użyć trochę ostrzejszych słów.

Ostatecznie, uważam książkę za dość fajną, ale nie zachwycającą. Czytało się ją szybko, zwracała uwagę na ważny problem. To już druga moja powieść, gdzie opisywana jest strata po zamachu z 11 września 2001 roku (którego niedługo jest rocznica!). Gdybym miała ją podsumować - powiedziałabym, że po prostu jest okej.

Maddie Kershaw is a 36 year old woman who does not like to let men close because of a terrible thing that happened to her first and only true love, Riley. Riley Was killed in the terrible events of 9/11 and Maddie always finds the run up to and the date a terrible time for her. Luckily her best friend Ally is there to support her through it and always arranges that they go away during the period.



We first meet Maddie when she mistakenly delivers a rude cake to the wrong venue and takes it to a ladies 100th birthday party instead of the hen do. Cake making is a hobby of Maddie’s although she would love to do it full time. Luckily the 100 year old lady Jem thought the cake was hilarious and actually asks Maddie to come back after she has delivered it to its correct place. Jem is trying her hands at match making and suggests that her grandson Evan takes her on a date. There is an immediate spark between the Maddie and Evan and Maddie is excited but scared at the same time.



Things happen on the date that scare Maddie further and even though this is the only person that she has been attracted to since Riley she finds the scary revelation by Evan hard to come to terms with. Throughout the story these two characters are thrown together in different situations and there is always the fizz between them and you are never quite sure if they are going to get together.



Maddie needs to clear her head of a lot of things relating to Riley and what his mother Caitlin said to her at his funeral. Until she has done this she really cannot move forward.



I really enjoyed this book and the descriptions of Melbourne I felt for both Maddie and Evan through the story and loved the fact that they were always trying to do what was right. I think my favourite character was Jem she was so full of life and seemed so much fun. The book made me wonder how I would react in the same situation and sometimes I think that is a good thing for all of us to think about.

The story follows Maddie. She's working as a physiotherapist and bakes cakes in her spare time. Maddie thinks she's had her one chance at true love. She went through a lot in her past and it made her they way she is now. She lost her boyfriend Riley in the 9/11 attacks. Now, she doesn’t open up to men, because she is scared to lose him as well. That’s until Evan comes into the picture.

Evan is a primary school teacher, which made him very interesting form e from the start. As a teacher myslef, I really enjoyed the little scenes at school and with the kids.

Evan and Maddie click instantly, they have a magical connection. After the first date he tells her that he might have cancer. It’s a shock in several ways. Is Maddie ready give her heart to someone she might lose again.

Maddie and Evan share a lot of sweet, memorable and passionate moments and they fall for each other more and more. Evan seems to be the man to make her love again and to make her take a risk again. Of course it wouldn’t be a complete and gripping story without some drama and misunderstandings.


Maddie also suffered from the way Riley’s mother behaved after the memorial service. It’s so many years ago, but it has always made Maddie feel bad. When Caitlin contacts her and wants to see her, she doesn’t know what to do.

I really enjoyed this story, it’s emotional and touching, but also sweet and lively at the same time. At times I felt that some things were portrayed a bit over the top, especially the epilogue, but I still loved every page of the book. It’s told from both main character’s perspectives, which made it even more special.
Helen has a great voice, includes feelings in a beautiful way and is able to create a unique setting in her story.

“Maddie wanted to make her suffer like she had for more than a decade, but her heart had never been that hard, and instead, she found herself thinking about the feelings behind the words as opposed to the actual words themselves.”

I really loved this book! It was heartbreaking and so sweet! The characters were very well developed and the story flowed well.

Maddie’s life in the romance department hasn’t always been in her favor. After the 9/11 attacks she lost her true love. After that she constantly hops from casual fling to casual fling with no regrets. One night while delivering a cake to a birthday party she meets Evan. Evan is a man determined to stay single, but when he meets Maddie all bets are off. He has instant chemistry with her and they both decide to go on a date. While in the middle of the date he confesses to Maddie that he thinks he may have testicular cancer. This of course scares her and he’s then confused as to whether he should have told her so soon. Will they continue on with their romance or will they decide given their history not to take it any further? I loved this book so much!! It was heartbreaking but so sweet.

Maddie’s boyfriend perished from 9/11. Evan just found out he has testicular cancer. Can this two seemingly damaged people find the strength to love one another? In Helen J Rolfe’s book “Handle Me With Care,” these two characters navigate through the feelings and aches of wanting to love but scared of getting hurt again. That’s a feeling that is easy to relate as we have all been there at one point or another. The book is by an Australian author, and has many Australian references, and I am sure there are a lot of reference and jokes that I did not get. And that may have made the pace a little rougher for me Sometimes I think a scene ends abruptly, and that may be because of a culture barrier. Still, I liked the book enough, and enjoyed the slow sweet pace of these two people falling in love.

Two sensitive subjects are used sympathetically in this lovely romance between Maddie and Evan. Each has issues to deal with which make them certain that being in a relationship is not going to be right for them. Maddie is haunted by the past having lost the man she loved in the terrorist attack on The World Trade Centre. Evan is struggling to come to terms with health diagnosis which turns everything he knows upside down when he meets Maddie.
This well told story of two people who meet and fall instantly for each other is full of emotion as they strive to overcome the past or the present. The supporting characters add flavour and authenticity to this love story with a difference.

I recently took "Handle me with care" away on holidays and once I started reading, I couldn't put it down. I thoroughly enjoyed the story line and the charming characters - a great read!. I can't wait to get Helen Rolfe's newest book.
