I found the premise of the book intriguing and captivating, but unfortunately, the execution fell short of my expectations. Although I enjoyed the overall story, I couldn't help but feel that the characters lacked depth and chemistry. They were portrayed as overly nice and well-mannered, to the point of being somewhat bland and uninteresting. Their perfection felt unrealistic. I felt if they were to fall into a barrel of manure they'd come out smelling like roses!
Furthermore, I believe the author delved into excessive detail on insignificant matters. The book could have been much shorter without compromising its quality. By eliminating the mundane and unnecessary elements, the story would have remained compelling. It brings to mind the adage, "war is long periods of boredom punctuated by moments of sheer terror." In this case, the book seemed to have long periods of tedium interrupted by fleeting moments of excitement.
As with book 1, the storyline deftly weaves science and meta sciences into a complicated and multi-layered social network. Lots of near magical revelations, and just-in-time discoveries ensure the protagonists survive, though not without struggle or some loss. Sci-fi developments cascade from a rather complex, extremely old technological find and yet manage to trump its creator’s science because of the genius of the humans who found it. The book ends by pausing on a positive moment in the overall storyline.
After reading book one of the Chronicles of Daan, had to read book 2. As with all other books by this author, his expertise with combining fact and fiction to the point where it is difficult to separate them is awesome. His stories are believable and easy to follow, do not miss out on following The Chronicles of Daan, a definite must read!
A total delight! But then, all of D Wards books are. Great characterization and an engaging storyline brings a very good evening of fun reading. I do love these characters.
Prophet is a fantastic sequel to The Rise of Daan! The positive tone and the action-packed pages keep the reader engaged and awake into the wee hours of the night. The writing is reminiscent of Dune, by Herbert, and the storyline is compelling and well written.
