Just as a warning, although there are dark moments in this series this volume deals with the death of many monsters and how Rimuru and the others deal with the aftermath as they piece together what happened, who is responsible, and what actions must be taken to hopefully not see any future alliance with humans fall to shambles. As such this volume (although it has a little) does not have much of the usual cheerful banter and antics often associated with the series so be prepared to get kicked in the feels as we see the escalation of a war.
Returning after being ambushed Rimuru discovers why he could not teleport back to Tempest or communicate with those within. Even more horrifying is the fate of those that have put their trust in Rimuru who fell to the cowardly actions of the kingdom of Falmuth possibly with the coordination of Clayman.) Powerless at his loss Rimuru will seek out any chance he has to bring back those sacrificed thanks to the teachings of the so called true faith even if it means taking in the mantle of someone who will murder humans to even the scales. Given a chance to save those murdered in cold blood will he be able to rise up against those that murdered his people and become what he didn't want to be? The retaliation starts now.
Non è una bella situazione, ma forse c'è una speranza. Per perseguirla bisognerà mettere in dubbio certi valori. Vedremo... Questa tensione politica la sto aprezzando. Un bel manga. Non credo diventerà tra quelli che vorrei avere nella mia libreria ma rimane una lettura piacevole.
Definitely no filler in this volume, with a lot of set-up to the soon-to-be occurrence of Rimuru . Certainly a lot more violence in this volume than there has been previously, and much less happy-go-lucky moments, but the intensity was well executed and the excitement building well to for the "crescendo" to I believe happen in the next volume to come...
The politics in this volume were well done too, and loved that there were aspects to show that being "other" doesn't make someone "evil" (like monsters being evil to humans or vice-versa), and that it's the choices of individuals that make one good or bad. Many layers and morals to the stories told in this volume, and it was all pretty cleverly done.
Chapter notes below for personal reference: (potentially spoiler heavy)
This volume is the same rollercoaster of emotions as it was in the anime, even though I already knew what's gonna happen. Myulan was revealed as a pawn and, and as usual, Rimuru resolves the situation and turns the situation to his advantage. The bit about a "side effect" of err... evolution (becoming a demon lord) does sort of cheapen the emotional impact though, so I still have mixed feelings about that. The highlight of this volume are the emotional scenes and the start of the counterattack. And lastly, I appreciated that one simple sentence that explained why all the named monsters evolved into more a human-like appearance, giving even more coherence to Rimuru. I wonder why the anime chose to deem it trivial and cut that out.
The human forces of Falmuth have attacked Tempest while Rimiru was away. Monsters were killed and Falmuth has declared war before Rimiru can even mourn the dead. Desperate, Rimiru resolves to pull of his greatest feat of magic and resurrect the fallen. But the only way he can is to become a Demon Lord... and that involves killing humans.
Things are about to get spicy and this volume should've had another chapter... at least one. Because these cliffhangers are torture.
This volume can seem a bit short because there is not a lot of action in it: it is mostly a volume of setting the stage. It's not bad thereby, but some folks might feel somewhat disappointed. Rest assured that nearly everything is necessary, though - this definitely isn't filler.
This is getting so good!! I’m super excited about this battle and the outcome of it, once again humans are not inclusive of those that are different. And that made casualties, no it’s to see what Rimuru is going to be able to do, excited for the next one, although I think the battle doesn’t end there and I only have one more volume so… crap
This volume was so emotional for me, seeing what happened really hit me hard. The way the series has built up to this moment is amazing, it's gotten a little darker which is perfect right now!
