There’s nothing about this series that’s *bad* exactly but nothing about it that’s particularly gripping either.

The cultivation system seems interesting, but written in the least interesting way I can imagine.

The reader is given the impression that the MC is supposedly doing something very inventive/competent, but i didnt feel like I was shown *why* it was special, or innovative, or something that needed the advanced knowledge from a previous life to accomplish (why is a 3x3 box supposed to be revolutionary?).

There’s a way this could have been written to contrast with flaws and mistakes that he corrected from his first life, ways to make me as the reader feel involved and invested, so there’s a sense of triumph when something works and is overcome.

But I get absolutely none of that.

Instead I get bland assurances that something terribly clever is happening, and it will build to something even better later.

TLDR: If you liked the first book, you’re gonna like the second one, that’s all there is to it.

If you want more details, here you go. The second book, to me, is just better. Everything I enjoyed about the first book was more tuned in, it was smoother, I liked the characters more, I liked the cultivation system more, worlds were more fleshed out, it was just better.

If you want more overview of the series, it’s got some really interesting ideas and mechanics that keep it fairly fresh. The magic system is quite interesting in the way it works, the cultivation being different from what I’ve read before but still something that you can understand and grasp fairly quickly. The worlds are wonderfully different and the characters that interact from these different worlds do behave as you would expect, that is that culture shock is a large part of the books, which makes sense. All in all, it’s still an excellent series to read and I’m looking forward to more books to come.

A comfy cultivation novel

TLDR: More of the same from the previous book with some power ups and a new humorous character, and a new world

This was an instant read for me as soon as I saw it. The first book hooked me with the uniqueness of the cultivation system along with a time traveling hero.

This one continues the theme but adds on a new side character and grows the other side characters into more of their own.

Highly recommend picking this book up.

This was a very typical Xianxia/cultivation style of story and hits all the expected notes. Main character somehow offends the over-hyped, arrogant, young noble from the most powerful family, there's a vendetta, etc. etc. There is a contest where the main character's group competes with the nobles, rules get bent, again very very standard story tropes.

Other than that nothing really happens. More soulcrafting, more gathering of materials to build a soul home. The building process is painfully slow and not much happens while they talk endlessly about their construction works. The characters don't really grow or change. A new and purposefully annoying character is added but only makes everything worse. The plot is meandering.

The narration was good but I won't be reading more of this series.

A Splendid Addition

This is an excellent second book in what may be the best ”non-standard” cultivation novel out there. I cannot wait for the next book in the series!

Sorry didn't give higher rating but felt this was more fair. As 3 to 3 and half. (Possible mina spoilers.)

I'll start by saying really like the new character Senka a lot she great (2 feet light blue skin white hair cute) and fun really disliked how Theo treated her.
One offer thing that really agrovated me was constant use of, fall up into the air makes no sense at all mean can raise up into the air or fall through the air say, but can not fall up into the air sounds so dumb sorry but does..

What do love about this series is original take on cultivation its clever fun and extremely interesting in everyway and enjoy reading about it and them working on it.

Thanks author for book...

This was "okay" for a sequel.

I honestly expected the author would have made the protagonist more powerful, or let his knowledge give him more of an edge that it already did. Or let him use earth knowledge to overcome obstacles by thinking outside the box.
He is doing that, but it's as if the author is tightly controlling him, so he's just above average for the regular rubes.

I will read the sequel, but these books are not at the top of my list.

Another solid book

I’m a fan of Sarah Lin’s writing, and this book is no exception.

In the Weirkey Chronicles she has a very interesting take on the cultivation/portal fantasy genre with its own twists. In this book it also looks like Theo has won himself a solid rival!

Looking forward to book 3.

Awesome!

I’m really enjoy cultivation novels, and this series has an awesome magic system. I have not read anything similar, and I’m looking forward to the next book! I enjoy this series enough to immediately start reading the new book as soon as it is released instead of finishing the book they I’m currently reading.

Great continuation of the series

Love the series so far, excited to see where it goes from here. As always with Sarah Lin I feel like her character work is head and shoulders above most fantasy writers.

Unique, well thought out story

The book is a good follow up to the first one. Likable characters and a unique approach to magic help this book stand out from its peers.

Sarah Lin gives such unique descriptions of the various worlds the characters encounter on their quest. I was particularly impressed with the unreal beauty of the city of Nlukoko with its islands, a floating "azure marble" that is the library, the modes of transportation on the waterways - which include water channels up through the air which they sail along on. It is a real wonderland of lotus flowers and shimmering water and lights. Yet it is a city with strict expectations, unjust social structures, and politics that cause misunderstandings which can lead to lethal consequences. Theo, Nauda, and Fiyu each get into major scrapes unknowingly by ending up somewhere they shouldn't, wanting to take a stand for justice, or unintentionally causing an offense. They navigate these unknowns and need to constantly change their plans to work towards their goals.

I am becoming attached to these three main characters and want to see them succeed, although we don't see how since they are facing such great odds. By clever wit and carefully covering each other's backs, they somehow come through the impossible. Lin doesn't let us read long before another challenge confronts them.

Sarah Lin continues to deepen our understanding of each character's personality, their strengths, and how they process decisions to work together as a team. I have become more invested in wanting them to succeed in their objectives, build solid soul homes, live through the situations where they seem doomed. Lin's first two books in this series are an exciting start to The Weirkey Chronicles tale. Each one has enough leads to future action that we will be anxiously waiting for the next one.

It's much better after two books than Cradle was after two books.
Progression fantasy where the protagonist is leaning on more powerful friends shouldn't feel so fresh and unique but it does.
I think at this point I trust Sarah Lin enough to read anything she writes.

It was just okay. Not exceptional or great. The Author knows how to tell a story proper but seems to have trouble inserting new characters. I mean why add new characters and then completely ignore them for chapters on end?

The whole story arc is crawling too, I guess this is slated to be a loooooong series.

I'll read the next one but that might be it.

Different

I really enjoy the theory-crafting behind this universe. Actually constructing buildings and rooms to manipulate ‘cantae’ is unique in my reading experience. It’s almost town-building in extreme miniature.

Book two

Mistakes: First I don't actually consider this a book. It's just to short. Less than 200 pages. While I like a forward in a book series to remind a reader what has happened in other books. However I felt that the forward and appendix were used mainly to bump up the page count. This really should have just been folded into book one. It would have improved book one. I also found one mistake.

Plot: Hunting and still building their soul homes. Had a bit more action.

Characters: Growth of two of the characters soul homes.

4/10 My main problem is the lack of length. If you enjoy short stories you will enjoy this book.

4.25/5

A great and compact continuation of The Weirkey Chronicles series.

This time Theo and friends visited Deuxan, a world ruled by complex if not cruel societal rules and trappings. Trying to secure a mean of transport to travel north through Tatian, Theo, Fiyu, and Nauda got themselves caught in the upcoming Rainhorn hunt, in which the prize would worth all the effort.

Meanwhile, the frictions and encounters with Deuxan locales might tangle Theo's crew further into something more sinister and perilous.

Reading this book feels like eating a thin soup with barely any taste. You finish it and are both surprised at the lack of taste and that you finished it at all.

Very smooth prose, the plot does not stumble (does not become exciting either, however). The characters are fine, though they fall short of interesting. The world is believable and thoughtfully crafted.

Still, my overarching opinio is that it's inoffensively mediocre and goes down smoothly. Readable, though without much ambition.

The series is slowly growing on me. This book had a greater element of conflict and foreshadowed a longer plot arc that is drawing me on to the next book.

While I'm still not 100% on board, there's a lot to recommend here.

A good story that has steady pacing.

With book 2 Sarah Lin does a bit of time jump in the beginning that is a confusing considering where we left off in book. The group comes together relatively quick which I am grateful for but given the start is small reader speed bump for me. Thankful this third person limited story does pull the reader in and through with each chapter.  It does have a bit of a chapter by chapter release feel with sold chapters that pull you through but with a end that is okay but feels much like the rest of the story.

I did enjoy this story. Lin uses familiar aspects and tones of cultivation and progression genres but molds it with her own vision that makes the magic system her familiar yet strange. This fantasy does have a bit of a sci-fi feel to me.

Overall I think this story is appropriate for all audiences young adult and above.

Admittedly Lin does have a main protagonist that is hard to like at times and almost seems spiteful rather than crotchety. If this was an anime or Manga he would be a tsundere, if and I'll be annoying one at times. At the same time the character does feel like the young hero I'm a typical fantasy during certain beats of the story.. There is a struggle between the ruthlessness of age and the inner angels of the main protagonist.

We do get some other povs this time around and what I like is given that each of these characters are from different species from different worlds that all consider themselves humans the way they look at the world is shown to be uniquely their own. A cool aspect of this is that during these little POV breaks and the ability to know what the other characters think of one another it adds a new layer to their interaction that for some reason feels a bit more impactful than other stories of multiple povs. Perhaps it's just how it's thrown into it I'm not sure.

Seeing how Sarah Lin uses her toolbox as a writer is inspirational and instructive. She's able to write a clean concise story that does pull the reader through. It doesn't have the necessary depth that I enjoy for most of my stories but it does have a good amount of world building that as we're getting pulled through does feel solid enough to spark the imagination and not feel like a backdrop. The story does have a solid feel to it that you often do not see with chapter by chapter releases necessarily. The plot will not the strongest aspect of the story is there enough that the beginning middle and end does feel like a beginning middle and end albeit of a story chunk taken out of a larger story.

These books are fast reads and are priced extremely reasonable if you want to add it to your library and available on unlimited. Well they're not audible I can very easily see them becoming a worthwhile audible listen.

Review of books 1-3

I was super impressed with the authors street Cultivation series, so dived into this with good hopes and wasn't disappointed.

Rather than typical premise of cultivating the body to perform above human expectations, this book provides a new and novel way of 'soucrafting' as the means to get stronger. The magic system is based on crafting a 'soulhome' to harness the 'cantae' (mana equivalent) which then provides the physical and magical abilities. The whole mechanics around constructing the soulhome is fascinating and done very well. It also blends the series in a crafting type cultivation book, which is something I've never come across before.

Sarah's expertise in constructing intriguing worlds is again on full display here as we are drawn into the mysterious 'nine worlds' as we follow the MC, Theo. After his first stint in the new realm ended in betrayal, he's worked hard to get back for a chance at vengeance. And now he's back and we get to follow him as he navigates it again anew looking for answers, closure and redemption.

The book also incorporates elements of progression fantasy as we get to see interesting dynamics of power levelling as the characters progress through their arcs. We also get to treated to various social and political machinations as they MC and his thrown together team makes their way to getting to their individual goals. The pacing is a bit slow and we do not get a fast paced edge of the seat action book, but that really isn't the focus here.

Kept me interested enough to read all 3 books back to back and looking forward to the next one.

This second book has no relation to the first book...did the main character (Theo/Jake) get amnesia or did the author get it?? There is no main plot arc in this book series anymore, no more classes (weren't they supposed to last for a whole year??), no more family duels (just had those only 2 in the first book), no cultivation, no more 9 Worlds, no more trying to create a stronger soulhome for the main character or the side characters, no more monsters/demon attacks, no more getting revenge 40+ years later for what happened to his retinue/team...Could they have placed the book cover on a whole different fantasy novel series??
This is so bad (boring, going nowhere, about nothing) that it is depressing to read and to finish...
This book 2 has no maps, no inside illustrations, no character summaries, no character descriptions, no real world building, no cultivation, no real/fun/entertaining adventures, etc....but a capacity by the author to ramble, going on and on about absolutely nothing. The series has an additional title "The Weirkey Chronicles"??? and there isn't even a diary? A person keeping track (Chronicler) of the everyday events of the main character and his two and a half supporting characters?? I mean for this book two, the author apparently skipped a whole year?? Can this truly be considered a "chronicle" then??
I do not recommend this book 2, I do not recommend this book series.

4 You Got A Real Blooky Head Stars

Rainhorn is the second book in The Weirkey Chronicles by Sarah Lin.

The more this book expounds into greater detail, the deeper I fall into its clutches. I can't seem to get over the creative genius that is Soulhome crafting. The concept is so wuxia cultivation, with this beautiful almost more "every man"s twist. It opens up the query of laying out your own inner foundation: what materials speak to who you are? What would you place inside on pedestals of honor? Where would your focus reside?

Outside of that chief intrigue is the aspect of traveling between many worlds, experiencing the antagonistic clash of such primordial differences within the base of their individual cultures. Shifting between nuances and hidden inuendos.. Attempting a mere conversation or introduction on shifting ground.

The variances in the journey allowed us to delve into these three characters more thoroughly. And I am glad to have this new understanding, of Nauda especially.

What Theo's queries into Brigana will bring to their future is my strongest concern going forward... Along with any other dangerous traps laid by Vistgil through the Nine Worlds in preparation for his vengeful return.

Slow burn- maintains the same pace as the first.

Theo's internal struggles about design and external struggles about connections and friendship are on display once more. Interactions with companions are interesting, as are the various factions and people they interact with. The search for Sublime Materials (I grew to loathe those six syllables over this whole series) ramps up, and as we all know and love, slow and steady comes out on top.

Pros: New worlds, characters, and struggles. The social aspects of the society are cool, and it's fun seeing all the character interactions as they learn to trust each other.

Cons: Again, 'Sublime Materials' seem to be the only things that exist in the world aside from tables, chairs, and architecture. The author clearly wants these things to come across as valuable and rare, but it's difficult to feel that way when nothing of normal value is established.

All in all, decent book, solid sequel that did a great job raising the quality over the first book. will read through all again when series is finished.

It got better

The series is definitely getting better and if it continues, it will remain well worth picking up.

We have definitely gotten more insight into the three main characters and a greater understanding of their dynamics as a whole. Senka is definitely an adorable addition but the real star of this book was Fiyu. A balanced and reasonable character with very funny thoughts and mannerisms in the end.

This book was also more action packed and we got to understand more about how soulcrafters use their abilities and how their crafting affects them and the rest of the world.

All in all, I would definitely recommend giving this a read for sure. Here’s to also hoping that the rest continues this upward trend.

Loved it! Really enjoyed learning more about the many worlds and seeing the relationship between the three main characters develop. Feel like things were paced much better with this book, and I especially enjoyed the epilogue and the unique POV it gave. Only downside is that Theo does still feel a bit flat personality-wise. I really hoped this would be expanded upon somewhat and he does shine at times, especially when thinking about the intense loss he's been through, but I think he's still pretty flat a lot of the time sadly. Regardless, it doesn't spoil the book, just something I hope improves.

Very excited to see where things go in book three and beyond!

I really liked the first one in this series, but this one just absolutely kicked into high gear for me. The plot was really great, there were SO many absolutely incredible moments, and I really loved seeing the different culture of Deuxan. But for me the highlight was the excellent growing bonds between the characters; the three mains are so adorable together, and I loved every single moment of them bouncing off each other and obviously caring for each other so much (even if Theo pretends otherwise like a massive grump <3). Just a very endearing book all around!
