It uses synthetic phonics and phonemic awareness, as opposed to the traditional language-based methods of memorizing shapes and words. The program targets the developmental learning stage of a child (phonemic awareness), which is best suited for toddlers or small children. The ideal age range is 2-7. Jim states that the old system forces children to memorize word shapes, which is why some children get so stressed.

The program is extremely comprehensive, covering all the areas you would expect to help a child read.

Jim’s personal experience with his four children shines through, as you can tell that he understands the frustrations of children.

He realized his children’s reading problems were affecting their confidence, happiness, and self-esteem.

But it wasn’t his fault or the fault of his children. It was the actual system itself.

You will find lots of people on the internet praising this program. Thousands of parents have already used it and have had fantastic results.

It is also nice to see that Jim actively encourages people to contact him with their reviews.

It shows he is confident in his program and that it really works.

There is excellent one-on-one support on the Facebook page for the Children Learning Reading program.

Consequently, it is best if they can learn in bite-sized lessons. The Children Learning Reading program does just that. The step-by-step lessons take on average, 5-10 minutes, for your child to complete.

These short lessons mean your child is more relaxed, and it doesn’t stress them out. It puts them in the perfect mindset to learn and enjoy it.

My daughter is almost 7, and is doing great in school in every subject except reading. If you point to a letter and say “What sound does this make?” She replies “I don’t know, “ah” or something” (the letter was M). The teacher said she just isn’t interested yet. I know some countries in Scandinavia don’t even start formal schooling until age 7, with some of the best outcomes in he world. I know she will pick this up when she is ready. But...she lives in America. We read books together all the time. She sees me reading all the time. We have alphabet stickers on the wall with animal pictures. She has been in an acclaimed preschool for 2 years. She has watched educational shows and played with educational toys and SHE SHOULD KNOW BASIC PHONICS but she just doesn’t. Here’s the thing, if she senses my frustration or feels pressure, she will shut down. So teaching her on my own wasn’t going to work. I am too impatient. So I asked around, and this book was recommended.
And it’s working! We are on lesson 10, and she is sounding out the words before I can! I love that this is completely scripted. It keeps me from showing any frustration. I literally read exactly what it says to, and it works!

We started this in Feb for my 3 year old as part of our pre-k learning at home. She turns 4 in April. We did it slowly as she is very young (great for preschool age if they are ready or just start at Kindergarten). So we don't do it daily. It tells you what to say to teach it to your kid (you read it to them cuz they cant read). I was worried even getting this book if I'll know how to teach it to my kiddo but this tells you how. Each lesson 2 pages so you open the lesson and its the left page and the right page. Not a lot of practice activities so I would supplement with letter tracing/practice workbooks/worksheets. Each lesson makes you review previous lesson first. I think 5 lessons in they have a review of all the alphabets learned already. And lesson 10 is when you start to sound out 3 letter words. Letters aren't learned in order of ABC but in a way that kids can start to put letters together to sound words. Definitely will recommend it as its colorful, short lessons, has the "teacher's guide" built in, activities where kids actually "mark" on the book (its not solely a manual for adults). Unlike a similar/popular how to read book that doesn't seem to have color and looks like a complex teacher's manual.

Can't rate this book enough. We are 5 weeks in and on lesson 4 taking it slow, a few pages at a time based on my 4 year olds attention span. We are home educating and I've tried several methods with her. She was struggling before with CGP reception phonics books and just couldn't grasp blending at all which was frustrating for both of us. She is now reading! Its lovely to see her progress and the way the bars under words are dropped is at the perfect rate, many words she no longer has to sound out and knows them by sight. I'm excited to continue. The lessons are long and definitely she wouldn't be able to complete a lesson at a time, but they have a good mixture of intense learning words to read, matching games, tracing words and she likes to color the pictures too so it breaks up the session and she can color as a reward once shes read the text that accompanies the picture. The instructions to the parent are well written and it all comes together after the first few lessons! This book coupled with letterlands alphabet book to learn the letter shapes and we're all set! Don't use the other 10 phonics books I have now!

I love how the authors have all kinds of suggestions in the beginning to set reasonable expectations and make the book more fun. My daughter loved putting a sticker on every page she read, and at the end of every lesson, we would print a certificate from their website that she would color and proudly display on the fridge. The book is actually working! She’s getting more confident in her reading as well, and even asks me to do her “reading book!” It’s methodical in its approach and builds in a way that makes sense. She’s reading significantly better already and we’re only on the 5th lesson! Her Kindergarten teacher even mentioned to me this week that she’s seen a big improvement and asked if we were working with her at home. Definitely buy this book, if you have a stubborn or slower learner who you know can do it, but just hasn’t figure it out yet. I’m not sure how this book would do with younger kids just because of the patience it takes to make it through a couple pages at a time. I highly recommend this book!

The reading is going great!
Much better than I thought.
I have a 6 year old son who had some pretty significant delays due to liver disease which required a liver transplant two years ago.

We attempted kindergarten this year and after two months pulled him out to homeschool him (he was doing bad in school so we figured he wasn't ready).
I never thought he would take off reading the way he has!

He's doing so well with your program he will not have to repeat kindergarten (that was our plan, to pull him out, do a little homeschooling and have him do kindergarten again the next year).

We are so pleased with your reading program!
And super excited our son gets to go into first grade all because his reading skills are so good!
He's a better reader than most of his friends his age who have never had delays or medical issues.

While the program claims to be a comprehensive guide, some of the activities felt repetitive, and the pace seemed too slow for my child's liking. The promised rapid results were not as evident as I expected. Additionally, the emphasis on memorization rather than fostering a genuine love for reading raised concerns. Although we made progress, it wasn't as swift or enjoyable as anticipated. The program might work for some, but it missed the mark for my child's learning preferences.
