One night Quentin Quirke, the most famous author on the planet, steps out the back door of a bookstore in a tiny desert town and disappears.
The horror novelist is in the clutches of thuggish tow truck driver, Kelvin Boone, who has written a gruesome book (based on the exploits of his sinister sidekick, Jingo, who does unspeakable things to people in the back of his van) and has hatched a desperate plan: kidnap Quirke and force him to rewrite the novel and turn it into a blockbuster.
Quirke, famously prolific, has hit a dry patch and when he reads Boone's crude manuscript he realizes that he is looking at his next bestseller. If only he can escape the two murderous maniacs who have him locked in a shed in the desert...
Meanwhile, the flyspeck town is invaded by the media, who get few answers from the hapless local sheriff and a renegade FBI agent intent on resuscitating her flat-lined career.
With its cinematic setting, vivid characters and propulsive suspense, Bestseller is a darkly engrossing thrill-ride shot through with lashings of pitch-black humor.
One of the better horror stories I've read lately. Very realistic characters and a sizzling plot. Quite a few editing or typographical errors but these in no way detracted from the writer's skilled storytelling.
