Moreover, the thirst for gaining knowledge and reading new things keep on increasing in such people who have this habit since childhood. I really loved the way Reading Head Start attracts children. I have two daughters who started school a year ago. When I realized they were having difficulty in reading the simple rhymes, I tried the Reading Head Start program. They are not only improving at school, but they are always eager for the next lesson, and love reading simple short stories in their free time. The decidable reader and the worksheets allowed me to ascertain the progress made by my daughters, and also understand where they need more help. I always try to give them small rewards for completing a worksheet correctly, and this encourages them to work harder.

My daughter is almost 7, and is doing great in school in every subject except reading. If you point to a letter and say “What sound does this make?” She replies “I don’t know, “ah” or something” (the letter was M). The teacher said she just isn’t interested yet. I know some countries in Scandinavia don’t even start formal schooling until age 7, with some of the best outcomes in he world. I know she will pick this up when she is ready. But...she lives in America. We read books together all the time. She sees me reading all the time. We have alphabet stickers on the wall with animal pictures. She has been in an acclaimed preschool for 2 years. She has watched educational shows and played with educational toys and SHE SHOULD KNOW BASIC PHONICS but she just doesn’t. Here’s the thing, if she senses my frustration or feels pressure, she will shut down. So teaching her on my own wasn’t going to work. I am too impatient. So I asked around, and this book was recommended.
And it’s working! We are on lesson 10, and she is sounding out the words before I can! I love that this is completely scripted. It keeps me from showing any frustration. I literally read exactly what it says to, and it works!

Before this book I tried writing out my own sight words flash cards, used internet resources, etc. I think because it was mom trying to be the teacher, my child was less interested. I bought this book to supplement my child during their kindergarten year. We spent a total of 15 months slowly working through this book as an outside of school supplement to reading. I was absolutely shocked how effective this book was for my child!! My child was almost completely off the charts for reading and word recognition by the end of their kindergarten year. My child also mastered a sight word list of 220 words 15 total lists, was only required to get through the first four lists by the end of the year but because of this workbook my child passed all 15 lists in a very short time period). By the end of kindergarten my child was reading short chapter books. I could not possibly be anymore impressed by this book and have recommended it to all my parent friends with younger kids. I'll definitely be using this book again with my youngest!

I love how the authors have all kinds of suggestions in the beginning to set reasonable expectations and make the book more fun. My daughter loved putting a sticker on every page she read, and at the end of every lesson, we would print a certificate from their website that she would color and proudly display on the fridge. The book is actually working! She’s getting more confident in her reading as well, and even asks me to do her “reading book!” It’s methodical in its approach and builds in a way that makes sense. She’s reading significantly better already and we’re only on the 5th lesson! Her Kindergarten teacher even mentioned to me this week that she’s seen a big improvement and asked if we were working with her at home. Definitely buy this book, if you have a stubborn or slower learner who you know can do it, but just hasn’t figure it out yet. I’m not sure how this book would do with younger kids just because of the patience it takes to make it through a couple pages at a time. I highly recommend this book!

I purchased Reading Head Start for my 3-year-old daughter last year.

Now, after one year, she is reading between 2nd and 4th grade levels.

My daughter still loves it and I’m sure he’ll be well prepared for the added workload and increased expectations of her new teacher.

Obviously, we have been reading together through that time, but Reading Head Start was the right choice to teach her to sound out words and learn basic sight words.

And we all love the letter sounds song.
