I figured that i might as well start of the new year with a light read. and why not start with a topic that i like, monster girls? I had watched the first season of the anime series, but i only became of this spin-off light novel recently and decided to give it a go. and, despite being a spin off, it felt a lot like the series. and...that's where it lost me a little bit.

See, the main character in this series is a man named Kimihito. he's surrounded by all these Monster girls vying for his affection. That's fine for the series, but that's really where it fell flat for me in this book. and that is, Kimihito didn't NEED to be in this book. This book is a series of short stories where the different monster girls work in different jobs. and yet for some reason, the MC had to shoehorn his face in EVERY. SINGLE. STORY. I'm not picking up a novel about monster girls to read about this random dude. He didn't need to be there.

This book should have been about one thing. the girls trying out different jobs. he did not need to be there even a little bit and make sure he white knighted every situation so they'd love him MORE. it was pointless and definitely hurt the book.

That being said, for what it was, i had fun. it read quickly, everyone was in character, and i had varying degrees of enjoyment.

1. Bar: The bar story was pretty lame. Rachnera, Miia, and Zombina work at a bar and have to get rid of an unruly bar patron. I like Rachnera but this was definitely one of the weaker ones. It showed the girls could hold their own which was nice, but at the same time was rather boring and pointless. 3/5

2. Idol: i actually really liked this one. papi, Tio, and Mero all are idols for a day. they all have a lot of fun, and, despite a few issues (including one where MC has to 'save the day' (sigh) ) it was overall a fun time. i like papi, tio, and mero, so seeing them work together to put on a good idol performance was cool. 4/5 (would have been higher without MC)

3. Maid: this one was also very cute. Centorea and Manako are maids in a maid cafe. centorea has trouble getting the hang of it so they play to her strengths and help manako overcome her shyness. nice one, but once again i could have done without MC. 4/5

4. Dealer: this one.... could have used some work. Polt, Draco, Kii, and Lilith work at a casino where they practice being dealers. the problem with this one was you had 4 characters and you tried to develop all 4 in like 40 pages. it wasn't enough time. especially seeing as these 4 aren't normally main characters and NEED that development. we once again have to have MC as the center of attention rather than letting the girls develop themselves. which is annoying. the gambling didn't really come into play and was overall just... fine i guess? i liked the girls interactions with each other, but once again a lot of it focused on MC which was unneccessary. 3/5.

5. Nurse: This one was the most pointless. Suu, lala, and doppel all become "Nurses" i'm using quotes as they don't ACTUALLY become nurses. they basically just stay in the hospital, wear nurse uniforms and give the MC massages and wash his back. I would have much preferred it if they actually did...you know, actual nurse stuff like helping people. instead of just being an excuse to molest the MC. lala and doppel had some cute moments, but overall meh. 2.5/5

Epilogue: the girls all fawn over MC and buy him presents. whoop dee doo. 2/5.

All in all, it had a good IDEA. the problem is, MC had NO business being in this story and really brought it down for me. It's really NOT a 4/5 but because goodreads STILL doesn't believe in 1/2's i can't give it a 3.5, which it really deserves.

the characterization was fine, it read well, and i could definitely imagine all these situations. i WILL say that i don't understand the sealed plastic it came in. compared to the actual manga/light novels of monster musume, this was very tame. didn't need to be sealed in plastic at all.

My final review, keep the job aspect, drop the main character COMPLETELY. write him out of the storyline in this spin off series. pretend he doesn't exist. EASILY could have been a 4.5-5 out of 5.

Sadly, this is what we're left with. 3.5 out of 5, rounded up to a 4, and that's me being VERYYYY generous. But, it's a new year and i feel i'll start off by doing something nice.

3.5/5 rounded up to a 4.

This is FUN! A dessert book if you will! Not a very complicated plot or adding much more to the existing world building, BUT, it was nice getting more monster musume content in a new form! It really made the humor of the series and relationships stand out more. Also I cringe/smile at the one guy that has to do ALL THE VOICES and be A WEEB about it! (he did FANTASTIC BTW) I would really like more lite novels set in monster musume as they make for a great little snack of content that leaves you feeling happy.

A light read to start off the new year. This was an enjoyable little collection of stories. I may have to give the author's monster Girl Doctor series another chance.

Kimihito’s inner thoughts kinda ruin the character for me

I love this anime. I’ve deemed it as a comfort since I always gravitate towards it when I’m in an anime watching slump and I can’t find anything good. I picked up this wrapped book thinking it was a manga (I didn’t know what a light novel was).

With that said, I enjoyed this book. It was light, fresh, silly, and showcased the essence of the anime. It made me smile and giggle at times and made me want to watch the show for the thousand-and-one-th time.

But maybe I’m just biased. Who knows?

I hope more of these get written. Love Monster Musumee so a light novel based on the series starring my favorite girls trying to work a job was amazing and fun.
