Cease to Beat the Same

*This cover is no longer in use for this book! As beautiful as it was, Cease to Beat the Same needed a cover that truly described it.*

Everett Verlice is nearly a century old, still young according to most vampires. And so, he has trouble controlling his dastardly urges. He attempts to manage them through his job at a hospital, where he collects extra blood samples to quench his thirst. Though his latest urge, a young woman with a possibly fatal heart condition, is not quite so wicked. Everett finds himself unknowingly drawn to her. Confused if his feelings are purely interest in why drinking her blood sends him deep into horrifying visions, or if he is falling in love with her.

When a vile group of vigilante vampires expresses a bit too much interest in her for Everett’s taste, he is forced to battle his weakness for human blood and the inner demon that has controlled him for the last hundred years, to protect her.

A wealthy, young-looking man who has the city of Seattle in the palm of his hands should have no trouble wooing this beautiful girl. Although coming face to face with some of the most powerful vampires known to legend, will be another challenge.

MY RATING: 4*
RELEASE DATE: 28 July 2021
CLIFFHANGER: Yes

I have never read paranormal romance or paranormal anything in my life. So I couldn’t even tell you what possessed me to read this book.

I’m telling you right now

description

I am amazed at how much I loved this book.

We have a broody, handsome and badass vampire who has tried his best to cling to his humanity by using his work to get the blood he needs to feed and be more discerning in who he feeds off. For almost a century he’s managed to keep to himself. Until a woman is brought into his hospital.
There’s an unexpected pull to her. Try as he might to avoid it and her, he can’t. She’s human. Small. Vulnerable. Breakable. But he wants her. But can he have her being what he is, and she being what she is? Their kind should never mix. Or can they?

I liked Alaska. She was brave. Smart. Kind. I loved to see their story develop. I love how protective Everrett was over her. I loved how they faced and overcame the hurdles that stood before them.
I really enjoyed the story and honestly, I can’t wait for the next book. If you’ve never read paranormal romance, this is the book to start with. It wasn’t too gory in that unrealistic, ridiculousness that I thought I’d find. There’s still very much elements of humanity that made it easy to enjoy.

I remember reading vampire romance novels in my teens, way before Twilight was a thing, and reading this brought back all the nostalgia. It's hard to believe this is @author.thiery first novel. It's seductive, touching and fast paced, which I appreciated, and I couldn't believe how much was packed into the book, without the story suffering at all.

Everett is a nearly 100 year old vampire, who works at a hospital and has come up with some clever ways to curb his thirst. He meets Alaska, who he is immediately drawn to, after decades of being alone, and we follow them as there relationship develops. I fell for these characters and I loved their instant attraction. I also enjoyed the hurdles they had to overcome as it wasn't all plain sailing. The best thing is that the ending leaves us with a thirst for a sequel, soon to be quenched ❤

A great read and I will definitely be coming back for more. If you like vampire fantasy romance with all the spice, this one's for you!

I normally stay away from vampire books, because I generally just don’t like them, but I decided to give this one a shot because the synopsis drew me in, and I’m glad I did. A big reason I stay away from vampire books is because the ones I’ve read in the past just feel like they’re trying too hard to be twilight, and you can definitely tell. This book, however, was a breath of fresh air. I’ve never read a book like it, and was so happy to read something that was different, well written and had good plot. Also I know absolutely nothing about medical stuff or working in a hospital, but everything sounded well researched and well put. My only “negative” was that I would have liked it sexier. But that’s a personal preference and I don’t think it really makes the book bad, or anything like that, it’s just something that I like in a book. On a separate note, where can I find a man like Everett??

Unique PNR with Addictive Storyline.

This was a unique take on a PNR with Everett the vampire's POV throughout the majority of the story. I'm shocked this is actually the first book by this author. I feel like she did a phenomenal job bringing this story to life. She gives you a world that has vampires who live unique lives and survival comes with costs.

I really liked how we get glimpses of Everett from the past as a human then as a newly turned vampire. Seeing how he struggled with becoming what he called a demon inside him and forcing him to kill only for him to survive was heartbreaking. I feel like the author truly gave this character so much humanity and pieces of his soul to keep his heart throughout his journey as a vampire and still wanting to help save humans.

Alaska was the sweet and lonely girl who seemed to have a gift that she was completely unaware of and a instant connection to Everett. She seemed to be the only person to bring Everett back to his humanity at times. Their relationship was quite angsty in the beginning and definitely brought the heat later on.

Onyx was a character we get glimpses of throughout the story only knowing he is feared by other vampires and he leads with the help of four other gifted vampires. He is revered as the bad guy can shift reality and seems to only want Alaska for her ability at first. He also seems to have a connection with her. His character was brief only truly appearing closely at the end of the story but he definitely has an impact of what lays ahead for this couple.

I would highly recommend this book for anyone who likes a good PNR, but know this book does end on a crazy cliffhanger. I definitely feel like this is an author to keep your eyes on in the future. I can't wait to see more of this amazing world she is building with these addictive characters.

3.5 stars rounded up to 4!

"I was going to kill that man, whether I wanted to or not."

Something that threw me off when I first started this book was that it was written from the POV of the vampire (Everett), which is something I haven't seen that often in the fantasy romance genre - usually the hot male vamp is the love interest, and we hear everything from the perspective of the object of his desire. This book sort of turned that on its head and sometimes it was as if you were reading a companion piece to a whole other book from Alaska's POV.

"I was gaining pieces of Alaska, one at a time. I knew her veins, her scent, her eyes."

One reason I dropped half a star off this read, which I did enjoy, is just because I am not usually a big fan of the insta-love trope - I love to torture myself with a slow-burn or love triangle, and prefer enemies-to-lovers to anything else. That being said, I still liked the idea of Everett and Alaska being drawn to each other, fated to be together.

"Everett Verlice, I'm addicted to you."

The romance between out main character Everett the begrudging vampire, and Alaska is intense from the get go. Everett is drawn to her in a way he can't fully explain and doesn't understand. But it soon becomes clear that Alaska feels just the same.

I felt as if things happened very quickly, and the pace of the book is really fast. So much happens! There are interesting side characters I'd love to know more about, and a whole world of vampire law I hope to see expanded on and explored further in book two.

All in all, an enjoyable read with a few dashes of spice in there too for those who enjoy it!

i loved the way this author wrote a vampire romance! it was fantastic, but for some reason i literally can’t get into the vampire aspect 😭 my dumbass literally went into this knowing that everett is a vampire but doesn’t like it. lol i will probably pick the second one up closer to halloween cause it would be the perfecttttt halloween read! it was super intriguing to me that we only got everett’s POV, because girlllll i was begging to see alaska’s POV!! i hope we see her thoughts in the next one. i did want to see more spice, but we all know i like ‘em smutty. a whole star because of that cover mannnn! i’m really intrigued to read/see more of this author.

A Vampire love story.

I really liked this book! Everett and Alaska have a very sweet and strong relationship. They are simply ment for each other.

The backstory is interesting and I like Everetts use of being a phlebotomist as a cover for getting blood.

The steam is very very mild compared to what I am used to but it was really sweet.

I can't wait to see where this story goes!

She made my undead heart beat eternally again, yet it no longer forced thick sludge through my veins, just red, hot passion.

I rated this a 4. But I take it back, it's a 4.5.

Breana Thiery brings us something of poetic, gothic beauty in this delicious vampire-romance debut. I haven't read any vampire related stuff since being one of the many who grew up with the Twilight saga. So I'm not sure what sort of tropes are common in this particular kind of PNR, however, even with feeling like some of the aspects of the novel were reminiscent of the saga, it was done in a way that still felt refreshing and different. It's definitely still unique in it's own right.

Everett, the sweet, brooding...monster? No.
Being inside of his head feels so safe, so calm. I took my time with this one because Thiery's work, unlike most of the other novels I read, wasn't trying to throw me into a state of panic, rather, it was working to soothe, much like Everett, and I wanted to savour it. Returning to it always felt like being welcome home into a nice, warm, albeit gothic mansion. And hey, for being 96, Everett is not creepy, nor is he a horrifying creature. In fact, he's a vampire with a lot of humanity. I'm absolutely in love with how Thiery wrote his voice. Her way of writing Everett lovingly reminds me of Anne Rice's epic way of humanizing vampires (rest in peace).

Alaska, our darling alpenglow.
She's this soft, fragile thing, in a lot of ways. I didn't understand Everett's pull to her. Neither did he. Well, you'll have to read the book to find out why. Through the book we do grow to connect more with Alaska, and Cease leaves you excited to learn more about her own vampire journey.

Ah...and Onyx. Sweet, smooth talking, fucking crazy, vengeful Onyx.

I don't like you, but I like the words that come out of your mouth.
That's it.
That's the paragraph.

Thiery blends the staples of gothic/vampire literature with a refreshing, modern voice, and I am living for it.

Hmmm... I wonder what will happen in book 2...

Because of me...your heart will cease to beat the same.

"She made my undead heart beat eternally again"

3.5 stars!
A great start to a new vampire romance series! We're following Everett and Alaska as they meet when she is brought into the hospital Everett works in, under mysterious circumstances. There is an instant attraction on both sides but they are both cautious because of her unexplained visions and his knowledge that the head of the Nefarion is looking for Alaska to keep for himself.
I found the pacing of the story to be well done. There wasn't a dull moment.
I feel, though the characters weren't entirely flushed out as I didn't connect with them. I liked the writing and was intrigued enough by the story (and that epilogue) to be excited for the next one! This didn't end on a cliffhanger, but definitely in a way that leaves you wishing for more!

6 Stars out of 5!

I was addicted immediately from the prologue. I didn’t expect this to be a compulsive read but this got my blood pumping and anxious to turn every page to find what will happen next.
This was such an intense, hanging onto the edge of my seat storyline that went from sweetness to suspense, to fear, love, and then shock. A true emotional rollercoaster that had me pulled in feeling like I was in their world. The characters became real.

Most of the time, when I’m reading a story of a vampire and a human, the POV is always of the human. This one is of the vampire which was both interesting and intriguing.

Everett is not your typical vampire turned and bred to fight and kill. He was lucky to keep part of his humanity to help others while he battled his hungry demon inside him. Was he pure of soul? Of course not, he was a vampire.

This has a twist in the typical vampire powers and weaknesses. It was different, refreshing, and was an absolute perfect read.
Debut novel? You could never guess. I’m definitely hooked on this author and need more like a vampire needs blood.
Highly recommend!

Everett is a phlebotomist at a local hospital. Many years ago he was in his first year of medical residency when a uncontrollable patient forever changed his life course. Now he’s destined is to live forever as a vampire.

It’s at work where he meets Alaska and is instantly drawn to her. He’s never had such feelings for a human before. She spends several days as an inpatient due to a heart condition. During this time they get to know each other and he learns how addicting her blood is however, whenever he gets a taste he’s thrown into a vision he doesn’t understand. Alaska has also been suffering from her own visions that she can’t explain.

Their love story isn’t all smooth sailing. They have several challenges to overcome that involve some very nefarious vampires that want control of Alaska’s abilities.

The flirty banter between Everett and Alaska is hilariously cute. You really get the new love, butterflies in your stomach vibe from them and I love it! I would definitely recommend this book to any romance lover.

This book was so very close to 5 stars for me, I loved the book but I wanted so badly for there to be this one moment that I could feel the love connection and I just didn’t get it. For me that one pivotal moment is vital but it may not be to others so if debating reading I say go for it because you won’t regret it!

Oh. Where do I even begin with my criticism. The authors writing is so cringy and has tons of grammatical errors! Miss Thiery’s vocabulary is limited, but I’ve only read “Cease”, so maybe her writing has improved?

Breana Thiery loves using the word “brain”, which at times was used incorrectly. For example: “Rest did not come easily as the memory of the vision haunted my brain.” HAHA! “Mind” would be correct. There’s so many more I can write out but, my review would make up half of all my annotations. I’ll give you one more error: “Look, my throat is so dry I feel like I’m going to cough up a lung, my chest is aching, and my stomach is making this nasty sound. I feel angry, but somehow weaker. And my head is pounding so hard that I just can’t think straight anymore.” This is how it should have been written: “Look, my throat is so dry I can cough up a lung! My chest is aching, my stomach is making a nasty sound. I feel angry but, somehow weak! My head is pounding so hard I can’t think properly!” I tweaked it using her words which still can be far better, but I’m not practiced in my writing either. I can admit so. I’m a book reviewer, it’s easy to point out what needs to be fixed in this particular section. She used periods in an emotional scene where the character is raging about change in her body. There should be exclamation points in those sentences. The scenes were repetitive, the characters were doing the same thing multiple times, and the author wrote out these detailed moments. They added nothing to the characters, the plot, we didn’t need Everett frequently telling us his love for books. At one point Miss Thiery’s characters had them dilly dallying and they themselves were aware of it! HAHAAA!

The plot was that powerful vampires were after Alaska and Everett, did we get them mapping out a defense plan to defeat them?? NOO! While on a plane, Everett hears a vampire’s thoughts of attacking them, and THAT’S when they quickly formed a plan to resist him. I wish I was making this up. The plot twist is unstructured, as if the author was figuring it out as she went. Vampires are these powerful creatures, are smarter than humans, strong in physic, predators to human kind, and geez, Everett and his friends are the dumbest “monsters”. These characters are going against a vampire named Onyx who’s the most powerful one of them all, once you meet Onyx, you will be rooting for the villain. Trust. Don’t want to use spoilers in my review. Onyx gives us everything that vampires are by being the enemy, the humane way of living we get from Alaska and Everett adds nothing to the vampire theme. Breana Thiery’s plot of “Cease” lacks a thought out storyline even the characters themselves aren’t motivated by the threat, so with that, why should the readers care?

Everett is the most unserious person, they are going after his girl and this dude literally says, “‘They’re really after her…’ I said under my breath.’” Wow, give us nothing, Everett!!! Ending this review by that highlight to say the little care in the book makes me question how’d it get through publishing?

⭐⭐⭐⭐/5

🌶️🌶️🌶️/5 (Vampy spice is just another level.)

I realise I am completely lacking in all things spooky for book review photos, so I improvised! So here is my very overdue #ceaseflatlayedit and review! 🧡

I thoroughly enjoyed this book!! It moves at 110mph and does not stop, it kicks slow-burn in the dick; honestly here for it.

Everett, our main babe (Lee Dong Wook 4 me) works in Phlebotomy (blood stuffs) at a hospital and WHAT DO YOU KNOW HE'S TOTALLY A VAMPIRE. Alaska, who has a heart condition, gets admitted to said hospital and one bit of blood leads to another and BAM.

Love.

It was so hard to put down, only because every end of a chapter was the start of something new!!

Something I particularly enjoyed was how you're dropped into the world of this book and almost welcomed back as a friend. There's a sense of familiarity with it and the character dialogue is written so well, you get an almost instant feel for the characters. HEY. GUESS WHAT. OUR BROODY VAMP HAS TWO SOLID BEST FRIENDS. I loved that. He doesn't shut them out and take the high ground, he actually welcomes them as what they are: his best friends. Besides, you've got to share all that brooding.

The vigilante vamps and how we see some of their world was really interesting no spoilers but also 🥵🥵🥵🥵🥵 I can't wait to see more of them with the next book.

Whilst the pace is crazy fast, it's set up characters and a world I cannot wait to see more of; I'll be there day 1 for the sequel and that's a promise!!!!

I originally bought it as an ebook, but I reckon I'll definitely get a physical copy!

@author.thiery thank you for your hard work, creating this awesome book and always being so so lovely. Absolutely jazzed for Cease to bloom and gain more attention!! 🧡

Need a last minute Halloween read? Cease to Beat The Same is the one for you!!

4.5stars!

Cease to Beat the Same is the first book of the Deadly Hearts Duet. This is my first read from Breana Theiry, but it most certainly won't be my last. I really enjoyed this book; it was my first paranormal romance, and I devoured it.

Everett Verlice was studying to become a physician when a tragic incident turned him into a vampire. Everett is now a night shift phlebotomist at a hospital in Seattle. One night, he meets a mysterious young woman, and something draws him to her. She suffers from a heart condition that causes her to faint and have seizures. They spark a friendship while she is in the hospital. Eventually, Alaska is released from the hospital, and she calls Everett to pick her up. As time passes, they begin to fall in love. Throughout Everett and Alaska's relationship, they have encountered many challenges. Will Everett be able to keep Alaska safe?

This book ends with a cliffhanger that leaves you wanting more, and I can't wait for the next book!

I enjoyed this book. The genre itself is not something I normally read, and the instant romance threw me as I’m definitely used to reading a slowburn. The plot itself is intriguing to see played out and while it gave me adult Twilight vibes it didn’t feel like reused material.

The character dynamics are sweet but at some points it seems like the emotions the characters are going through are rushed, or not fully portrayed. The romance happened very quickly and the plot seemed to go from 0-100 once you hit the halfway point in the book.

Fast moving plots can be hit or miss. And I believe the author did a great job at tying things together without things getting too confusing. And the cliffhanger at the end left a perfect starting point for book two! Overall I definitely recommend this book if you like paranormal romances or if you were a Twilight fan as a kid. Even if this isn’t normally your cup of tea I still suggest giving it a chance like I did.

This story is about Everett who was turned into a vampire in the ER while working toward his medical degree. It chronicles his life after and all the pitfalls and problems he faces. He meets Alaska while working and there is an instant connection between them and their story follows within the book.

The story is original and interesting and I loved the idea of a vampire being a phlebotomist. The story was a bit slow in the beginning but picked up about 1/2 way through and was really intense at the end. I loved that the book answered all the questions at the end f the story but also left it open for more. I did have trouble with the instant love and I really had a hard time connecting with both characters. Some parts of the story also had flow issues to me. For these reasons I am giving this book 3.5 stars. I have rounded up the rating due to not having 1/2 stars in the system.

What a vampire book I must say! I loved the story, and the suspense in this one. In the beginning it was a tad slow for me but it did pick up once we finally got some answers! I have not connected well with Everett and Alaska relationship I felt something is still missing, maybe it's just me lol But my oh my once they introduce me to Onyx I was hooked! The author was keeping him away from me for a bit . There just something about a dark, and dangerously vampire that I love also I just love the villain. The epilogue, didn't see that coming can't wait to continue!!! 3.5 ⭐/ 5 ⭐

I wish I could do half stars!
This book was really great, I liked the premise and the relationship building. The story really picked up for me towards the end when we see the 2 dominant vampire males fight for the newly turned vampire woman who had already fallen for one and then kidnapped by the other. Both of the men used their gifts and strength to ensure that they each get what they want; Alaska and her heart. The end has a hook that leaves you wanting to know what is going to happen!
