It’s Parade Day, and Margie would have thought that any trouble would have centered around drinking and motor vehicles. Or being trampled by horses. Or clowns. But the latest homicide investigation is nowhere near the parade route, but on the outskirts of town. And the culprit appears to be a tiny boat.
Why do so many deaths in parks have to be by drowning?
Margie Patenaude is once again looking at death in the water. The boats may be small, but the suspect list is growing.

Detective Margie Patenaude (“Parks Pat”) is back with another mysterious death in a scenic Canadian park. What seems to be a straight forward accidental drowning turns out to be anything but that in this intriguing page-turner. A look into the victim’s background reveals him to have been an awkward individual, lacking in sufficient social skills to develop fulfilling relationships. He was, however, an ardent enthusiast of RC boating and did manage to maintain a tenuous relationship with a small group of like-minded hobbyists. Maybe they can provide Margie with some clues as to who might have had a reason to harm this man. Then again, maybe they don’t want to help. P. D. Workman never fails to draw me into a story in the first few lines, no matter which of her many different series I am reading. She can usher you from one genre to another seemingly with the ease of changing socks and each story is a well-crafted tale featuring delightful characters that are easy to become attached to and care about. Aside from a solid whodunit mystery, the stories in this series offer a bit of insight into the Indigenous peoples of Canada as well as carefully detailed descriptions of some of their beautiful parks. I am already anxiously anticipating the next book.
I was provided with an advance copy of this book, for which I thank the author, and I am voluntarily sharing my honest and unbiased review.
The other gives us another enjoyable story with prognostic Margie Patenaude (Park Pat). This story finds a RC boat enthusiasts in the lake. Was it an accident or did someone help him get there. Read this story for yourself and see if you can determine what happened.
I volunteered a honest review in exchange for an ARC copy of this book.
It’s the first Calgary Stampede after the start of Covid and everyone is excited for the parade and celebrations. But to Margie’s (Parks Pat) disappointment, she is called out on a possible murder. This looks like an apparent drowning while the victim was trying to rescue his RC boat. Another great Parks Pat mystery.
Love this series set in Canada! Settled in at home to watch a holiday parade, Detective Margie Patenaude is summoned to the scene of what appears to be an accidental drowning. But, perhaps it isn’t quite accidental? Whenever I pick up one of Ms. Workman’s books I know I’m in for a treat! This expertly crafted book has interesting characters and a nice twisty plot to keep the pages turning. I enjoyed this book and am looking forward to her next one. I received a complimentary copy of this book and chose to write a voluntary, unbiased review.
SKIMMING OVER THE LAKE is the fifth book in the PARKS PAT MYSTERY series and I liked that it picks up where we left off time wise. The title is very fitting and the story concerns another accidental drowning, or is it something more? We are once again taken through the steps of a police procedural as Margie and the other homicide detectives are on the hunt for clues. I liked their approach to questioning those whom might be witnesses or more. The addition of the remote control boats and their ties to the story added another layer.
I like how Margie's daughter and grandfather are woven throughout and how we learn more about their heritage and the pride they take in it in each of the books in this series. There is a realism in the storytelling of the familial relationships as well as the work ones. There is a nice flow to the story and there are twists and turns throughout especially as the clues are gathered and analyzed. There is closure with the solving of the crime but once again the story seemed to end abruptly. I had no idea that I was at the end of the book in my Kindle until I "turned" the page.
Ms. Workman is an author whose books I enjoy. She writes varied genres that always have me going back for more.
Skimming Over the Lake - a review by Rosemary Kenny.
'Parks Pat', aka Homicide Detective Marguerite Patenot, has her hands full with another death in a park, that initially seems accidental, but unfortunately proves not to be what it seems. Family is very important to Margie and she's rightly a little concerned when her teen daughter Christina starts to spread her emotional 'wings'. Luckily Margie still has her beloved grandfather Mashoum nearby, as well as her faithful pooch, Sheila. After the case is closed, she ponders the crimes and dangers that can happen even in rural areas like the parks. PD Workman sensitively addresses this glimpse into what could happen anywhere and at any time, in Skimming Over the Lake, when someone 'different' is shunned and wrongly suspected. Thought-provoking and an interestingly portrayed police procedural. Try it for yourself today!
Skimming Over the Lake is the fifth book in the Parks Pat Mysteries series by P.D. Workman.
Margie Patenaude has the Parade Day off to spend with her daughter when she gets called in to a death in a nearby park. It is another water-involved death.
This was an interesting case. There were a number of suspects and no one is forthcoming. I like how Margie gets paired up with different detectives and she isn’t always the lead.
I received an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this book and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
'Skimming Over the Lake' is a quick-read police procedural in which another body is found in the park on Parade Day, a Friday. It seems to have been an accident. Then on Monday morning they discover the ME wants more info. It's back to the beginning. Interviews ensue.
I recommend this book to anyone who likes murder mysteries.
I received an ARC from the author. This is my honest review.
