About The Authors

Saundra Yancy McGuire has been teaching chemistry and working in the area of learning and teaching support for over fifty years. In 2007, she was recognized for excellence in mentoring with a Presidential Award presented in a White House Oval Office Ceremony. She is also an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Chemical Society, and the Council of Learning Assistance and Developmental Education Associations. In 2013 she retired as Assistant Vice Chancellor and Professor of Chemistry at Louisiana State University, and in 2017 she was inducted into the LSU College of Science Hall of Distinction. She is now Professor Emerita of Chemistry and Director Emerita of the LSU Center for Academic Success, which was recognized by the National College Learning Center Association as the nation’s most outstanding learning center in 2004. Saundra has presented her widely acclaimed learning strategies workshops to faculty, students, and parents at over 500 institutions in forty-seven states and twelve countries. Saundra received her B.S. degree, magna cum laude, from Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA, her Master’s degree from Cornell University, and her Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, where she received the Chancellor’s Citation for Exceptional Professional Promise. She is married to Physics Professor Emeritus Stephen C. McGuire, and they are the parents of Dr. Carla McGuire Davis and Dr. Stephanie McGuire and the doting grandparents of Joshua, Ruth, Daniel, and Joseph Davis.

Stephanie McGuire holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, master’s and doctoral degrees in neuroscience from the University of Oxford, and a master’s degree in opera performance from the Longy Conservatory. She attended Oxford on a Marshall scholarship and received a graduate fellowship from the National Science Foundation. At the Longy Conservatory, she received the Victor Rosenbaum medal, given yearly to the most outstanding graduate of the conservatory. Partly as a result of long and stimulating conversations with her mother about pedagogy and learning strategies, Stephanie became a highly sought-after private academic tutor in the New York City area where she lived for ten years. By coauthoring this book, she is delighted to contribute to Dr. Saundra McGuire’s admirable and revolutionary mission to make all students expert learners. Since graduating from conservatory, Stephanie has enjoyed forging a successful career as a classical mezzo-soprano. She has performed with the New York City Opera at Lincoln Center, with the Boston POPS Orchestra in Symphony Hall, and several times at Carnegie Hall. She now lives in Berlin.

This book is a must have guide book for all parents that are looking to assist their child with appropriate study habits. The teen years are challenging not only in the area of maturity, socialization, increasing independence, but also, with learning and studying. For some students, high school is the first time that they actually have to put forth any type of effort to learn and study. Many of them don’t even know where to start due to a lack of experience. This guide will help parents to help their children become successful learners.
