To help pardon his guilt from his life as a sword for hire, a skilled ninja must face a horrendous death penalty for saving a young boys life. Kana, a hardened ninja of feudal era Japan, has been cursed and sentenced to "1000 Deaths". His journey into hell begins when he is exiled to a haunted town plagued with undead ninja and the supernatural. Can Kana survive the night?
Jisei is a fantastic comic which pulls the reader into a grisly world hell-bent on making the protagonist, Kana, die 1000 deaths for going against his superiors by choosing to spare a child’s life.
While the story is gripping, Hernandez’s understanding of storytelling through illustration guides the reader to fully immerse themselves into this world. The compositions of the pages make it easy to flip through eagerly, and the single page illustrations implore you to rest for a second before jumping right back into the action.
Hernandez’s storytelling is refreshing, as he fully trusts the audience to understand the story without info-dumping or spoon feeding information. He gives enough to cause intrigue and keeps enough secret to cause speculation.
It’s a phenomenal story that absolutely must come back from it’s hiatus!!! The Art of Jisei is just as beautiful, and getting to see behind the scenes into what choices Hernandez makes before going full-speed is truly inspiring!
Jisei is a fantastic read. The author and illustrator, Miguel Hernández, has done some amazing work!
Jisei Book One, does a great job of introducing the reader to the protagonist while giving the audience well illustrated fight scenes. The story is dark, moody, and expresses an honest yet entertaining view of the samurai.
Jisei is well worth the read; especially if you enjoy action horror.
