Beyond The Human Realm

Rate this book
Time is running out for the iconic killer whales of the Pacific coast.
Orca families have been decimated by humanity’s greed and folly, their food supply wiped out, their infants dying from starvation and tainted mother’s milk.
Captive male orca Makai is destined for freedom, but a human-caused tragedy upends his world. Plotting revenge, acceptance into orca society, and reversal of his adopted family’s decline, his success hinges on fellow orcas, whale researchers, and a runaway teenager with Orca Clan roots. But Makai’s radical plan must first overcome millennia of orca cultural tradition.
Profits from the sale of Beyond the Human Realm will be donated to orca conservation efforts.

Gene Helfman is an animal behaviorist turned conservation biologist. With a PhD in Ecology from Cornell University, Gene was on the faculty of the University of Georgia for thirty years, authoring four books on fish and marine conservation and dozens of related scientific papers. He spent much of his professional career underwater demonstrating that fish are smarter than conventionally thought. In an effort to get the message to a larger audience, he has turned to writing screenplays and novels, on the premise that more people read fiction than non-fiction. Gene and his wife Dr. Judy Meyer, an aquatic ecologist, live on Lopez Island in Washington State.

Three and a half rounded up to four stars.

This book turned out to be better than I expected from the initial chapters. I believe it is the author's first foray into fiction, migrating from academic writing, and he does a fair job. The story grows on you as you get further into the book, or at least it did on me.

As you might guess from the book blurb, the key character is an orca, and the reader follows its rock-strewn adventures in parallel with relevant humans and other orcas.

As to this storyline, to me it seemed a bit contrived (what fiction isn't) and behaviorally conjectured (think Watership Down), but not so much that it spoiled my reading pleasure. I found this book a diverting experience, with a good variety of characters and twists and turns, even evoking emotions at times. Oh yeah, and there is a romance thread in the book for those who are into such, but it doesn't distract from the story. Me, I liked what the dog added to the story ;-)

My hat is off to all those tackling meaningful writing, trying to encourage a spark of understanding in humankind's predominate apathy, hubris, and avarice relative to the most serious problem facing us — the accelerating deterioration of a biosphere conducive to our existence. These varying voices, writing styles, and storylines hopefully attracting a wider audience for potentially more effect.

This incredible book is an intriguing and important nature drama where the main character is an orca. Entertaining and informative, the story is grounded in realism; beginning in an interesting way, the plot gets even better as it moves forward. The characters we meet have distinct personalities, and the author shows his skill as he builds those characters and makes them seem like living, breathing people instead of caricatures. The adventurous spirit of the book is attractive, and you’ll find yourself emotionally invested almost immediately. In addition, if you like a little romance on the side, you’ll find it in this story, but it isn’t the main theme. As you read, you will get a real sense of the messages embedded, especially the ones addressing our diminishing biosphere. You are presented with a well-rounded approach to environmental issues, from different angles that you may have never considered before. But it’s important to note that this is not a “sermon,” the tale will thoroughly entertain you.

The author has a gifted way of bringing you inside the world of a whale, evoking understanding and empathy, and you will be intrigued by the research information provided on orcas. They have a mysterious realm that is amazing to explore throughout this story. It makes a great summer read, but would also be perfect for a classroom setting, on a field trip, or during a book club discussion emphasizing environmental and nature themes. If you are drawn to the ocean, sea life, or orcas, you will love this book. Please pass the title on to someone you know with an interest in endangered species, the environment, or wish to read a story that will hold their interest and make them truly care and feel emotion for nature’s incredible creations.

After you finish this novel, you will find yourself with a deeper understanding of orca families off the Pacific coast, where their existence is threatened by human action on a daily basis, and their survival depends on helpful and knowledgeable supporters. Two things stand out about this book: 1) all profits made will go directly toward orca conservation; and 2), how emotionally involved you will become with the characters, especially the whale who wants to return to his orca family. The author has a way of creating settings that make you feel as if you’re dwelling in them. Parts of the book are sad, so consider yourself warned, but there is a ribbon of hope that runs through the narrative at all times. “Beyond the Human Realm” is a definite keeper; a novel that perfectly presents nature, wrapped in a package of pure enjoyment—an irresistible combination.

[I was given a free copy of the book by the author in exchange for a review]

I absolutely loved this book! Both Dr. Helfman's extensive scientific knowledge and descriptive writing style really shines through and makes the story feel very real and immersive (sorry, bad pun). I especially liked how the perspectives and culture of the orcas were depicted without over-anthropomorphizing them while still doing justice to the intelligence and sophisticated communication and social bonds of these creatures. Though Makai/Sam's story and getting to see the world through his eyes were definitely the highlights of the book, Rudy was an interesting co-protagonist and his scenes bring some humor (especially the sort that resonates with those who have spent time in academia) to a frequently dramatic and heartwrenching story. The plot has quite a few twist and shocking moments and I kept reading to find out what would happen to Rudy, Makai/Sam, and the other characters. The subtle parallels between the loss of captive orcas' families, language, and culture and the devastating impacts of colonialism on the Indigenous peoples of North America provided an interesting angle to the story also. Overall, this was a fantastic work of both ecofiction and xenofiction and I would definitely recommend it to adult readers (emphasis on 'adult'; there's quite a lot of mature content and themes) with fond memories of Silverwing, The Whale Rider, or Julie of the Wolves; and/or fans of Blackfish, A Whale for the Killing, The Spawning Grounds, The Luminous Sea, or The Plague Dogs.

Join the orcas of the Pacific Northwest on this beautiful, fictional journey Beyond The Human Realm. It's the ultimate adventure, as an elusive and anonymous donor decides to do something never done successfully. He will need the help of a university professor, Dr. Rudy Laguna, who flounders in his own life journey until he discovers the great purpose ahead of him.The start is the possibility of saving a single orca, Makai from the devastating captivity he endures. If that can be achieved, then can Makai lead them to give hope for a brighter future for the Pacific Northwest pods?
Makai's life in captivity is shown from his captors' motives, and also the trainers who teach him to perform. What is thrilling is that Makai tells his own story. We're given Makai's perspectives and emotions of life events, the sad, the mundane, the confusion, the joy, the outrage, and more. During this time, Makai gets a taste of family with a temporary placement of a new female orca in his tank. Together they are charming. What happens next is life altering. The intensity of these creatures is inspiring, and their intelligence and compelling desire for freedom. Makai is determine to find and reunite with his family, but how?
Rudy joins forces with an anonymous benefactor and they attempt the impossible, to bring Makai out of captivity, and teach him how to live in the wild. What a beautiful story of tentative trust, as it builds between Makai and Rudy. Although the story is fiction, there is so much factual information woven into the orca's actions. With his hands full working with the whale, Rudy begins to share his work with another scientist, a woman who interests Rudy very much. She keeps much of her background a mystery, but the attraction between them is apparent, and their mutual love of the orcas.
This book is a great read for shifting perspectives about the incredible orcas. As the story moves on to the pods in the wild, what is learned about the orcas, from them, gives great insights into what they face from the impacts of humanity on the environment, their own culture and ways, and their need for conservation efforts. This is a compelling read, pushing for appreciation for these wonderful orcas, and to give them what they need. As one step in the right direction, the author has committed that profits from the sale of Beyond the Human Realm will be donated to orca conservation efforts.

Beyond the Human Realm" satisfies as a very entertaining read with unique perspectives. We are treated to the dualing storylines of
Rudy Laguna, a disgraced academic who rediscovers his purpose researching orcas, and Makai, a captive orca navigating the "new world" of the open ocean once more. Readers will want to keep going to finish Makai's story when they reach the chapters told from Laguna's POV and then keep reading to discover how Laguna's plot wraps up when it switches to Makai's.

The novel covers a good chunk of orca history in the Pacific Northwest, their current struggle, and glimpses of life captivity in an easily digestible way. Helfman has clearly done the research on his subject and the "fictional liberties" he acknowledges never detract from the story. When finished, readers will seek out more information on orcas, which is always a sign of a fantastic novel. Beyond the Human Realm serves as an excellent introduction to their world and the threats that face them. A great read whose profits go to a great cause. You can't ask for more.

Gene Helfman’s book has important and serious information about the critically endangered Orca whales who reside in the Salish Sea, a region of the Pacific Ocean near Washington state, where the author lives. The reader is treated to numerous truly authentic Northwest experiences; riding the Washington State Ferry, the absolute thrill of seeing Orcas in the wild, and the cultural intrigue of Native People who have inhabited these lands for centuries. Helfman teaches us facts about Orcas, while skillfully weaving an ingenious fictional tale of high drama, murder, a little romance, and at times irreverent humor. I absolutely loved it! These whales have a dedicated educator, ambassador, and strong advocate in this writer. Read this book, tell your friends and family, write a review, and do all that you can to stand up for and protect these remarkable beings. Bravo, Gene!

I couldn't put it down. What great characters above and below the sea and such a beautiful intertwined story of creatures great and small (we are obviously the small!). Beyond presents an important view into the interaction of humans and orcas, both loving and brutal. Even though it is obviously fiction, the way it wove scientific knowledge with imaginative dialog felt very believable. Beyond prompted me to further my shallow knowledge of these amazing creatures (Orcas). I am eagerly awaiting Beyond Part II.

If the quality of this novel reflects the effectiveness of the author as a professor emeritus of marine conservation, then his students were indeed fortunate! Beyond the Human Realm captivated me from start to finish. Both entertaining and enlightening, this page-turner gave me a deeper understanding and appreciation for Orca society in the Pacific Northwest.

Readers will enjoy the cinematic setting, engaging characters, compelling plot and important message.

A story can help us learn about ourselves and the world around us, and Gene Helfman tells a superb one. Through discoveries, twists, tragedies, failures, and victories, Helfman shows the complexities of relationships among humans and beyond the human realm. His portrayals of the minds and hearts of orca whales and those who care for them—and profit from them—kept me turning the pages.

This is a Free Willy child or young adult book with a few x-rated moments. The language and ideas are simply written and I have no problem with the story line. I just prefer more depth and surprises in what I read.

DNF because I thought this book would be from the Orcas POV but it’s mainly from a professor/researcher’s point of view who got unemployed from his university because he had a sexual relationship with a student and him finding his place at his new university with orcas.
