Love, danger, and faith come together in this historical western romance.
Boston heiress, Rachel Davis, returns from a European tour to a world turned upside down. Her father has remarried and died suddenly on his honeymoon out west. After warning that Rachel’s life is in danger, Gracie, her maid dies under mysterious circumstances. Rachel’s only hope is to become a mail-order bride, and the best match-maker in the country is Milly Crenshaw, who lives right here in Boston. Mrs. Crenshaw is not home, but her maid opens the files to Rachel, and there in the hard-to-match files, she finds the perfect husband, Levi Grant, the sheriff of a small town near Laramie, Wyoming, where her father had died. She can overlook the fact that Levi only wants a wife to care for his five siblings—all under the age of fourteen—if he’ll help her find her father’s murderer.
From their first meeting, Levi knows Rachel is hiding secrets, but his siblings adore her, and she seems to be the perfect mother-figure. That’s all he asked for, wasn’t it? Then as their relationship deepens and Rachel reveals all, Levi finds he must catch a killer who’s already struck three times, and his new bride is the next target.
Elaine Manders is a creator of unique, heartwarming and uplifting Mail Order Brides stories. Rachel’s Refuge had me mesmerized from the start with an anticipation of how the events would play out. There is an element of mystery with the sudden deaths that devastated Rachel’s world.
When usual circumstances presented Rachel with a chance to flee the city for the west she knew she had to find the answers to who murdered her father. Meeting Sheriff Grant and his young siblings brought smiles with Rachel and the children finding a deep bonding. With western happenings of cattle rustling and untimely deaths of others, who is causing all the havoc? There is so plenty of realistic life events, faith and finding answers that made this book a winner in every way. Manders know how to deliver a strong heroine and hero along with weaving faith, love and new beginnings to her characters. It was a pure delight to read Rachel’s Refuge and I look forward to more books by this author.
I received a complimentary early e-book copy from the author without any obligation to write a positive review. I have expressed my own opinions.
To save her life, Rachel flees to marry a man in the West. Interesting and fun characters, including some cute children. I enjoyed the suspenseful plot. Nice Christian message. A good read.

In her usual fashion, Elaine Manders has brought us a story that will keep you turning the pages to see what happens next. This is a story with lots of action including suspense, danger, secrets, mystery, murder, and romance. This is Rachel Davis and Levi Grant's story, and the character development is outstanding. Rachel flees for her life and agrees to become Levi's MOB and help raise his five siblings and since Levi is the town's sheriff, she hopes he can find the person who murdered her father. Will their relationship grow into a HEA? Will Levi be able to protect Rachel and find her father's murderer? Be sure and read this outstanding story to find out. I know you will enjoy it as much as I did.
Rachel is heartbroken. She has had to bury her Father, only months ago and now her best friend. As she is leaving the cemetery, she meets up with Ellen, her best friends sister. Ellen doesn't have good news to tell her. After telling Rachel, what a no good, her stepmother is, they make a plan to stop her. Off they go across the country, so Rachel can marry Levi. He is a sheriff and hopefully find her Father's killer and more. Levi is trying to keep his family together. After losing his Pa, he is now raising his five siblings. He needs a wife and a mother for them. Next thing you know, Rachel is knocking on his door, but trouble is following her. Can they make this marriage of convenience, something more. With God's help.
Elaine Manders has, as usual written a wonderful book. This is a heartwarming story about Rachel and Levi. After her fathers death she overheard a plot to have her killed. Thinking there was also something suspicious about her fathers death, she decides to become a mail-order bride to the sheriff in the same town where her father died. She becomes a mother figure to Levi's 5 siblings and while they fall in love with her, it takes Levi a while to come around. As danger follows her, will Seth be able to save her in time? I loved all the characters in this book and it had a great plot. I highly recommend this book.
I usually do not read many mysteries, but "Rachel's Refuge" is one of the best mystery, Christian, romance I've ever read. Author Elaine Manders wrote a storyline that kept me in suspense and turning the pages. This book was perfect in every way for me. I enjoyed this marvelous book and recommend reading "Rachel's Refuge" by Author Elaine Manders.
I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book. This review is one hundred percent my opinion.
What an outstanding, action-packed western romance! It is bad when people think they are entitled to anything belonging to someone else and are willing to resort to murder of the true owner to acquire the treasured item. That is exactly what was attempted several times in this book. Read this bok and find out if the "bad guys" come out on top.
I really enjoyed this story of Rachel and Levi’s deceptive romance! This story has intrigue, kidnapping, deception, betrayal, murder, mayhem and love! The loss of both their fathers will bring them and his siblings much closer than they thought! Highly recommend this story and the rest of the series to everyone! I was captivated by the story and couldn’t read fast enough!
This was another great story about mail order bride Rachel. She went to see Mrs. Crenshaw, the lady who matched men and ladies up. Ellen, who worked for Mrs. Crenshaw wanted to help Rachel. They found Levi and started making plans to go to him. Very interesting the things that happen.
Westward Home and Hearts Mail-Order Brides Book 23)
Very good book. A bride marrys a sheriff whose father was killed. As the suspense goes on in this book. The sheriff is trying to figure out who killed his father leaving the sheriff with five siblings to raise from 12 to 6 months. The book really keeps you on the edge of your seat.
Rachel had every reason to be filled with fear but instead she was full of faith. The story reflects a certain innocence young women had in years past. There is much pain in the story yet there is a sweetness in the way Rachel moved into her new family and neighborhood caring for those who had also suffered loss. Very good read.
A sweet tale of how a twisting fate can be a direction from the Lord! Love the way the author blends such a captivating storyline and characters with spiritual truth! Great read!
If you enjoy action and plots where there is a lot going on, then this is the book for you. It will keep you on your toes and wondering what will happen next. Both bride and groom have motives behind getting married, but in the end they learn to work together to overcome their struggles.
Mrs. Crenshaw doesn’t make her match this time, her maid does. In a desperate attempt to help Rachel and solve her sister’s murder she matches Rachel with Levi, a small town sheriff.
This is an interesting story with the mixture of 3 murders combined with cattle rustling and outlaws living so close & those who could never be satisfied (a great example of how greed can destroy one’s life). It also moves along very well.
