After reading Michelle Frances other books “ The Girlfriend” and “The Temp” both 5 star books in my opinion, I was over the moon to get this book and couldn’t wait to sink my teeth into it!!

Michelle Frances you have done it again!! You had me gripped from the very beginning, I swear the world could have ended and I wouldn’t have noticed as I was so engrossed in this amazing book!!

Katie had her daughter Becky when she was a teenager and bought her up single handily. She has sacrificed a lot to give her the best start in life. Although life as a single mother is hard the 2 of them are very close and Katie couldn’t be prouder of her daughter getting a position as a trainee journalist.

Without giving this amazing plot away, there is a terrible accident involving Becky, Katie’s life is changed forever and when she discovers what Becky’s undercover story is she carries on investigating even though she is going against dangerous people who do not want this becoming public.

I was totally engrossed by this story of a mother who will do anything to find out what happened to her daughter and is fighting for people’s rights. I came away from this book feeling that if you have the determination you can put your mind to anything. In this instance Katie goes against corporate companies to fight for the right of everyday people.

Definitely a 10 out of 10 .A must read book that made me laugh and cry out loud at the same time!!

Thank you to Netgalley for my copy in exchange for a review.

Having enjoyed Ms Frances's previous novels I was taken by surprise by quite how gripping and addictive this one was. Her books are part thriller, part women's fiction, but I usually avoid these type of books because I'm not a fan of chick lit. However, I have made an exception for Frances, as just like here, there are so many surprises to keep you entertained that it's hard to resist.

Kate is a single mother to daughter Becky, a trainee journalist who she is endlessly proud of. But when Kate stumbles upon profound injustice and a cover-up she keeps it a secret because of the powerful and wealthy people involved. Naturally, a tragedy ensues and Kate, as the strong, admirable woman and mother vows to discover the truth about what happened to her daughter and get justice for her no matter what it takes. It's the same David and Goliath story the courts see all of the time. A company with unlimited capital to spend on representation against a mother with little money but a fire burning inside her.

It grips you from the get-go with the author throwing you right in at the deep end and before long I was engrossed enough that I was able to ignore the usual chaos going on around me. It's well written, powerful and very, very twisty and with ease, I feverishly whipped through the pages wanting to find exactly how it resolved. It moves at a steadier pace to some domestic thrillers but that gives readers the time to get to know the characters and invest in them.

It's a real page-turner and has three aspects I enjoy most in a thriller: emotion, unexpected surprises and thought-provoking topics. Emotional and captivating. Many thanks to Pan for an ARC.

I really enjoyed this book. It was very thrilling and also very informative. I liked most of the characters and I really like how it switched from past to present and in the view of Becky and Kate. I really liked Kate and found her very courageous and determined. This book was a really page turner and I definitely recommend it. I have read all of Michelle Frances books now and they have all been excellent so I’m looking forward to the next one already.

An interesting idea for a story!
Kate’s daughter Becky works as a graduate journalist for one of the UK’s top broadsheets, she is in competition for a ‘real’ reporters job and thus has a project underway to impress at the interview..
Quite shockingly she is killed in an accident, the same night her Mum’s house is ransacked, randomly...
You see where this is going?
Kate then looks into the accident more and wonders if it could be linked to what Becky was working on...
The book then goes forward as Kate finds out more and more, various people linked to Becky and Kate die in mysterious ways and a massive cover up and scandal is unearthed putting Kate and her new fella Tim in danger
Its all to do with crop spraying and actually the book cites quite poignant info on these poisons and some interesting legal cases are discussed
Unfortunately as much as I wanted
to I just couldn’t believe some of the story, at one point a chap who was seeing Becky ( Adam ) and was meant to meet her the night she died discovers a year later via Kate that she died!, so a girl he was seeing he just ‘forgot about’ for that year when she didnt show!, things like that in the book just didn’t add up
A but Erin Brokovich ish and a cry for the normal folk who take on billion pound corporations but a but unrealistic tbh
Some good characters, loved the neighbour Iris and an easy to read style
Not sure what relevance the cover has to the story at all

Gripping, propulsive, and chillingly informative!

The Daughter is an eerie, suspenseful thriller that takes us into the life of Kate, a middle-aged single mum who after the sudden death of her inquisitive daughter endeavours to seek justice and discover once and for all whether her daughter’s death was purely accidental or altogether something entirely more sinister.

The writing is sharp and intense. The characters are passionate, persistent, and consumed. And the plot told in alternating points-of-view is a pacey, dramatic tale of determination, courage, corruption, power, greed, suspicion, violence, reckless endangerment, and murder.

Overall, The Daughter is an engrossing, perilous, timely novel by Frances that reminds of the unconditional, powerful love shared between a mother and her child and the sometimes ruthless lengths big business will go to keep turning a profit.

Thank you to Publishers Group Canada for providing me with a copy of this story in exchange for an honest review.

Beoordeling: 3,5 ⭐

I had absolutely no idea what to expect from this book, and I'm in thrall of what I've just read.

It's the story of Kate, trying to do initially just get answers for Becky, and then she stumbles into something massive, and well, if I said large parts of this book reminded me of Erin Brockovich then you may have an idea as to some of the content.

In fact I could easily see Kate as Erin Brockovich and had Julia Roberts in my mind a lot as I was reading this, it's not a replica, and the motivations and everything are completely different and its only part of a bigger story, but once I started thinking it, I could stop.

To that end I think this would make s wonderful film, its a fascinating book and I could easily see it up there on the big screen.

I was gripped from the first few pages, and devoured the book over the course of the day. I learnt a whole deal of info about an industry I know nothing about. I suspected some of the wrong people as I just wasn't quite sure who to trust. There are twists and turns and overall its just wonderful.

Everyone has always written Kate off, she had her daughter incredibly young, and had always vowed to have Becky's back no matter what. It was wonderful seeing Kate grow in confidence, and in her beliefs after the worst happened, all to try to make her daughter proud and seek justice.

An eye opening story, with plenty of mystery and intrigue, and I'm glad to say the gorgeous cover even made sense to me eventually! Given this is the second book I've now read by the author and definitely not the last, I probably should read her debut at some point!

Thank you to Pan and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

The Daughter by Michelle Frances is a tense thriller that pulled me in from the very start. A compelling and troubling premise kept me fully engaged and invested in the lives of both female protagonists, and I was soon swept up in the drama of an underdog tale that evoked all the grit of Erin Brokovich.

Becky is a fledgling journalist when she stumbles onto a lead that has the potential to bring an entire industry to its knees if exposed. When the unthinkable happens, it is up to Becky's mother Kate to take up the cause in her daughter's name, regardless of personal peril and sacrifice.

This is a fictitious tale that has been inspired by real world events. Told from the alternating perspectives of Becky and Kate, Ms Frances has crafted a story about the undying love that is shared between a mother and daughter, and the courage of two women who will risk it all to expose corporate wrongdoing. Recommended.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Pan Macmillan for this ARC.

Sometimes it’s the people you least expect who cause the most upset.
Our main character, Kate, fell pregnant while still at school and having a child at fifteen meant certain aspects of her life didn’t quite go as she’d expected. When the story begins we’re seeing adult Kate about to introduce her graduate daughter, Becky, to a new boyfriend.
Very early on we’re told Becky is a trainee journalist, trying to investigate something she feels is a big news story. On the night she’s meant to meet mum’s boyfriend, Becky is killed.
We suspect the two events are connected, but the book focuses on Kate’s efforts to prove this. Before we know it we’re into major intrigue and highly suspicious behaviour.
The narrative is interspersed with past stories and events to flesh out the characters and help give us clues about what’s going on.
I was unsure about quite where this was going, and the storyline involving neighbour Iris and her holiday romance (which just happened to sort things out) was a bit far-fetched. However, Kate as a character was someone you couldn’t help warm to and knowing how her search resolved itself became something I was very keen to know.
Thanks to NetGalley for allowing me to read this prior to publication, and I definitely think I’ll get round to reading The Girlfriend which has been a book I intended to read and haven’t got round to yet.

After reading 'The Girlfriend' and 'The Temp' I was really looking forward to reading this book, "The Daughter."

It was a highly addictive and entertaining read from beginning to end. I thought the plot was so cleverly executed and I really enjoyed getting to know each of the characters and seeing how their stories developed throughout. I loved that the story was told from the two different viewpoints, switching perspectives between mother and daughter, Kate and Becky, giving me just enough flashback information to fill in the gaps as I learned more of events in the present day.

There were plenty of twists and turns that were a complete surprise to me and the clever combination of the taught plot, neat writing and high stakes kept me reading well into the night.

I am really taken with Michelle Frances' books and she is a firm favourite of mine.

I received a complimentary digital copy of this novel, at my own request, from Pan Macmillan via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

Never judge a book by its cover! The cover of this one gives no clue to the story inside. A really well-written, gripping plot that was thought-provoking too. Ok, there were a few events that stretched belief but I think Michelle Frances got away with it.

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book.

I loved the two perspectives and the mutiple different time points, but it never got confusing.

I thought the concept and the plot of this book was really interesting. I've never read a thriller which revolved around this topic so it definitely stands out amongst all the thrillers I've read.

Even though, I think it was kind of obvious where the book was going, I did still still enjoy all the twists and turns.

I really cared about the characters, I definitely was rooting for them and feeling outrage at the injustice they experienced.

It was well written and kept me engaged throughout

Overall, this was a really enjoyable book with an enjoyable plot, highly recommend

Thank you to Netgalley for kindly sending me a free copy of this book in exchange for a honest review.

I requested to read this book based on the fact that I enjoyed this authors previous two books. I wasn’t sure what to expect seeing that I didn’t pre the read the blurb however it wasn’t what I expected based solely on the cover. It was a quick paced thriller full of suspense, twists and turns and secrets. I was hooked from start to finish. If half stars existed this would be a 3.5. If was enjoyable however a few things were far fetched and the whole thing about pesticides being dangerous featured heavily throughout the story. I know this was the whole point but it’s not something that I have a great interest or knowledge in and in parts I got a little bored when it was continuously mentioned. All in all a great read, quite unique and fresh in its content and one I would recommend.

Katy and her daughter , Becky, have their perfect life. It’s always been the two of them since Katy gave birth at a 15. Tragically Becky is killed in an accident but Katy is determined to find out why her daughter died and ensure it doesn’t happen again but there’s much more than meeys the eye with this one.

I loved Michelle’s previous two books and this one was even better! Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for this arc in exchange for my honest review.

Szczerze? Zaskoczyła mnie ta książka - powieści o zwalczaniu chwastów jeszcze nie czytałam ;) Ale żarty na bok - mimo początkowych obaw całkiem nieźle bawiłam się przy "Córce". Muszę Was jednak ostrzec - to absolutnie nie jest thriller (no dobrze, będę sprawiedliwa - ostatnie rozdziały mają w sobie thrillerowy potencjał).

Brzmi dziwnie, nieprzekonująco i nudno? Wcale takie nie jest! Oprócz wymienionego wyżej wątku, dużą rolę gra tu też śledztwo dziennikarskie i świetnie opisane relacje rodzinne, a dokładniej więź między matką, a tytułową córką.

When an accident leaves journalist Becky unable to finish her top secret report, her mother Kate picks up the reins to get justice. But what was she researching and what dark consequences did it ultimately have?

The Daughter was an interesting story and had a very different topic from other thrillers I have read recently. It’s quite a unique premise and one I enjoyed reading more about, I certainly didn’t expect the subject matter of the book going in! I liked that it switched perspectives between Kate and Becky to give you just enough flashback info to fill in the gaps as you found out more in the present day.

However, I did feel on the whole that the story felt padded out, especially as the plot itself was quite simplistic when you look back over it as a whole. I could see about 100 pages that could easily have been cut with no adverse effects on the story. There’s a lot of over description of food and drink in particular which I found a little odd, there’s also too much backstory into Becky and Kate’s past which although added a little colour in the beginning, got a little samey towards the end. There’s a lot of trips made that don’t go anywhere and a lot of money spent that I got a little confused as to where it was all coming from, as the plot reiterates again and again how poor Kate is. There’s a lot of time spent waiting for characters to catch up with what the reader already guessed many pages before – there’s never really a point where the plot catches you on the back foot and makes you gasp at a change in direction – most of it can really be guessed from the outset. I’m also not a fan of books that give you an epilogue where they tell you exactly what happened to each character as if it was a real story.

Overall I thought The Daughter was an interesting concept but was a bit too padded with an easily guessable plot. Thank you to NetGalley & Pan Macmillan for a chance to read the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I would firstly like to thank Netgalley and the publishers for allowing me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

Certainly an interesting idea for a story!
I liked the plot of the story - a mother trying to continue her daughter's work, and getting justice - it's heartfelt, warm and very brave. I enjoyed reading Kate's story. However, for me, it was a slow read. It didn't massively hold my interest, there was no shocking twists or turns, and there were a few story points that were either far-fetched, or complete dead-ends.
Overall, a promising premise, but honestly, 'The Daughter' was rather bland compared to this author's other reads.
Hoping her next novel is better.

A powerful portrayal of a mother's love for her daughter, her grief and determination to save other families from heartache. Kate's a great character who develops during the story, growing in self-confidence and even risking her life as she turns sleuth, taking up the investigation that Becky can no longer see through. I loved the relationship between Kate, Becky and Iris. Although the writing style is quite light and gentle the environmental issue at its heart is very serious and reminded me of a similar scandal that was in the news when I was expecting my first child so it all felt very real!

I have had this on my tbr pile for a while and thought it about time I finally read it.
Not really sure what I expected it to be like, but the writing reminded me a lot like Diane Chamberlain/Dorothy Koomson books.
Lots of detail, and goes into a lot of background information but not in a confusing way at all
Thoroughly enjoyed this right from the first couple of chapters, and knew it would be one that I enjoyed to the end, and I wasn't disappointed.
Can't wait to read some of this authors other books - would highly recommend.

Page Turning

I wasn't sure what to expect. I thought it would be a similar story to The Girlfriend, but it was a completely different story of it's own merit.
I enjoy stories that have you guessing who the villain is. Although I figured the main villain, the author does well to make you second guess yourself. The last few chapters had me not wanting to put it down till I finished.

It's also made me want to go on holiday...

I liked this book. For one thing it showed what one could do when you made your mind up. It wasn’t all about the one thing it had many stories fitting in to complete the book. The cause was a good one.
