Mostly super cute creatures, and seemingly well described patterns, but SO MUCH SEWING necessary to attach all the various heads and limbs and ears and such, which means I will never try any of these.
The creatures are adorable and for the most part the patterns aren’t too hard… but some of the patterns seem like they just forgot to finish the instructions and the amount of sewing is tedious.
But my biggest complaint is that all the pictures are not accurate. You can use the right hook and the same yarn that the author uses and your creation is gonna be twice the size of the picture. I thought it was just me and something I was doing wrong, but when I looked up the hashtag on Instagram, I saw a lot of people saying “I don’t know what I did, but mine came out bigger than the picture. “ I have to assume they thought making them smaller and cuter would work better for the visuals but since they don’t say that it just makes it seem like everyone is doing something wrong.
I'm impressed with the variety of the creatures that are in this book to choose from. I have a few quick favourites (The Leshy and Kelpie) but I may just have to make one of each.
How cute are these! The patterns look doable, although only two or three seem within reach for true beginners. I might try one or two, but I'm sure I'll be ripping out a lot of stitches-- and my hair, probably, too.
There are several suggestions for how to customize each miniature, including eyes, colors or textures of yarn, hook size, and more.
Each pattern relies heavily on making separate pieces and assembling by sewing after, which seems both common to this type of pattern but bafflingly in its popularity, since it seems like patterns could be designed with better pickups, cast-ons, and shaping to avoid so much sewing. Experienced crafters may be able to short-cut some of these, like picking up body stitches at the neck instead of sewing the body to the head, but I'm not there. Crochet is not my strength and in this battle, I'm not sure who would win.
The instructions seem well-organized and explained. The introductory paragraphs to each pattern, and to each section, feel a bit forced, but that's not why we're here.
A great addition for libraries were amigurumi pattern books circulate, and a fun gift or home library addition to true nerds living at the intersection of crafting and fantasy fandoms.

Super cute Amigurumi pattern book. Out of the 40 patterns, I am SUPER excited to make about 20 of them.
It is definitely for intermediate to advance crochet individuals. I only say this because the author does not really go into detail on the stiches need for each project and there is a bit of guess work. I have been crocheting for YEARS, but I still had YouTube ready and had a bit of trail and error on my first piece, the One Eyed One Horned Purple People Eater.
I also enjoyed the bit of history/info on each of the featured Amigurumi patterns.
This is a fun book chock full of crochet patterns ranging from cute to creepy. I’m looking forward to working my way through the book. I love the photos, even if I wish there were more. I think extra photos would have helped for some of the fiddly bits of the patterns, or (failing that) detailed descriptions. This book assumes the reader/user is at least an advanced beginner who can read patterns and problem solve tricky crochet situations. I wouldn’t recommend it to an absolute beginner (that honor goes to The Woobles), but I think this is a fun way to step up one’s amigurumi game in a creepy and unique way!
If you’re a crocheter who enjoys making amigurumi and loves cryptids and other mythical beings, then this is the book for you! Inside, you will find 40 wonderful patterns separated into the following sections: cryptids, man-eaters, creatures of the deep, forest dwellers, mischief makers, and winged beasts. There’s a little bit of information on each being before the pattern, which I love!
I wouldn’t say that this is a beginner friendly pattern book, but there are patterns that will be easy for beginners to follow. However, the patterns do not have experience levels listed for anyone looking for that. If you’re newer to crocheting but still want to pick up this book, I say do it. You can determine which patterns will come easier to you based on your experience level after looking at the finished project photos and reading the patterns. Of course, you can always choose to challenge yourself based on what experience you have and what you’re ready to take on! Otherwise, you just have to be aware of what your typical gauge is using the same types of yarn the author uses because they did not include the gauge for the patterns.
All in all, I love this book and am excited to pick up some yarn to make some of these patterns in the future. The patterns are well written and easy to follow, and I never thought about painting safety eyes for my projects. I learned something new when I didn’t expect to!
This book has so many amazing reviews but if you look closely you'll see that many of them are from people who haven't actually used the patterns. From someone who has actually used them: this book is underwhelming and tedious. Each pattern has so many little pieces to be sewn on and many of them use lots of little felt pieces as well. There are mistakes and the patterns seem rushed. It seems like there was little to no pattern testing done. Instead of focusing on fewer patterns and putting a lot of effort into them the author just went for putting as many as possible into the book with the bare minimum for each pattern. The book looks nice at least.
Love love love this author and book material. Each pattern works up quickly and easy to read and so so adorable! Planning to do one of each, since there are 40 patterns in this book!!! My favorites so far are werewolf, mothman and kelpie just to name a few! If you want to get back into crocheting or spice up what you’ve been doing, def check out this book!! Rikki you’re amazing and talented and sweet and so happy to get my hook into this book 😉
#acrochetworldofcreepycreaturesandcryptids by @crochetedbyrikki ... This fantastical pattern book is wonderfully developed with well crafted patterns and clear instructions. Gustafson includes tidbits on each creature, good notes on adding bits like eyes and facial features, and high quality (and useful) pictures. I couldnt get a paper copy, but the Kindle version is formatted nicely and does the job. This will quickly become a staple in my craft collection.
I love crochet books that go beyond scarves and blankets. So far I have crocheted a tiny Mothman and he is a joy to have guarding my bookshelves from other moths. The pattern instructions were easy to follow and the photos helped with assembling the creatures. My only complaint would be the amount of sewing that is needed for attaching legs, arms, horns, tails, snouts, etc...Overall, very cute and I cannot wait to make more cryptids.
Some really cute creatures and a goodly number of patterns. It’s too bad she makes use of felt and/or eyeshadow in so many though. Those simply don’t hold up. When I spend the time and effort to make an amigurumi I want something that will hold up better. But that still leaves quite a few cute patterns.
Delightful! I can’t wait to crochet all the creepy creatures and cryptids! The mythical lore at the beginning of each pattern is super fun to read & the photographs of the completed projects are just too cute. Rikki, I bow to your mad skills… thank you for writing this book!
I honestly just thumbed through the book to get an idea of what to expect. The patterns look super easy and the end products look so adorable. The beginning of the book has some great tips and advice for getting started. I can't wait to get going on some projects!
It's cute and minimalist. A lot of the patterns involve felt and glue. There are some patterns I like and some that were a bit underwhelming. The fairy pattern was just a little girl doll with felt wings glued on.
Such adorable amigarumis and great instructions. Bought for the Medusa but was not disappointed! The bigfoot is insanely cute! I can't wait to make a big alien plushie, too.
Checked out from library. Patterns are well written and easy to follow. Audience for adventurous beginners and up. These work up quick, so are very rewarding. I may have to purchase, so I can keep working other patterns that caught my eye.
I love the idea of a book full of wonderful creatures. Work through this crochet book and create your own magical set of critters. If you love amigarumi I would recommend this to you for some different figures.
Great book with clear instructions and great photos. Perfect size to work from while doing crochet. I have made Medusa and the Zombie and both turned out beautifully!
Pretty good, there were a couple of double patterns with different names but overall I loved the patterns! I have made the cyclops and will be making nessie!
