This hurts me, so I'm not going to beat around the bush. I am just going to say it. This was not it for me. I feel let down after anticipating this release for so long.
When I read the first book in this series, The Extraordinaries, in 2020, I was blown away. It was my first time reading from this author and I loved how rapid-fire and intelligent the writing was.
It was such a fun story and concept, with a great friendship group at the middle.
The second book in the series, Flash Fire, which I read in 2021, wasn't quite all the stars for me like the first book, but I still really, really enjoyed it.
While it started out a little slow, by about 40% we started getting some startling new revelations that really helped to build the intensity. Additionally, I was having a lot of fun just being back with the characters I had grown to love.
There was a cliffhanger ending to the second book that left me with hives and my jaw on the floor. It was so shocking and exciting. I couldn't wait to get my hands on the next book in the series. I needed answers!!
I picked Heat Wave up on July 2nd and finished it this morning. Taking over 20-days to finish a book in this genre is pretty unusual for me. The beginning was so slow. I just couldn't get into it and also, I was confused.
All I could think about was that amazing cliffhanger from book two. I wanted to know what happened from there. It didn't seem to be touched upon at all.
I started to think maybe I was misremembering the end of the second book. Had I somehow imagined it all? Did I make it all up in own head?
Eventually it was revealed why it wasn't making any sense to me and I was so disappointed. My heart dropped to the pit of my stomach. I was just like, nooooo, that can't be it.
After that disappointment, I switched to the audiobook in the hopes of being able to get through it more quickly. I was just about ready to give up.
Thankfully the audiobook narrator was freaking fantastic and breathed new life into the story for me. Also, the action definitely picked up in the later portions of the story.
So yeah, at the end of the day, I'm sad about this one. The ending was cute, but this isn't how I wanted this experience to go. I still love Nick, Seth, Gibby, Jazz and the Dads. I just wish we could have had a better time together.
Overall, I still would definitely recommend this series as a whole. I know I am going to be in the minority opinion on this one and that's okay. Different stories work for different people and at different times.

I cannot say much about the plot in this one because it will give all the things away, but what I can say is Nick and his boyfriend and friends have all teamed up together to keep the people of Nova City safe. They will face some familiar villains and some new faces along the way.
The first 30-40% of this book was really difficult to get through for me, it was a bit muddled in the writing style and it makes sense once you get to the reveal, but I was not enjoying it as much as I could have. Once you get to certain point the story flows again and it was a fun ride. I love Klune’s trademark humor that he brings to every book and I adore Nick as a main character. I’m sad to be leaving this fictional world but I know Klune has a huge backlist and more to come in the future.

I wish I hadn't requested this ARC. It was a mistake. I read the entire series in two days to get it over with.
The sad thing is TJ Klune is a great author, always has been. I actually prefer his earlier work. This, though, I don't know what this is. It's not a good superhero story because there is barely any plot. It's not a good romance, because there's no ebb and flow. The worldbuilding is far from original, and executed poorly, which is a shock considering his past books. Nothing works here, not for me.

If you liked the characters and their relationships, if that's what kept you reading the other books, you'll love this one. I personally couldn't stand any of them.

A ripper conclusion to this fun and fantastical YA series, about superheroes, queer pride, social justice and found family.
Not going to lie, I’m going miss this wonderful cast of characters. Nick, Seth, Jazz and Gibby—or the core four, as I like to refer to them—left an indelible mark, which is nothing new considering my general love for a lot of iconic T.J. Klune characters (I’m looking at you, Sam, Paul, Josy and Bear, to name but a very scant few).
I love the journey these characters went on. The personal growth and the solidity of friendship, family and love was quite remarkable, especially when you consider where wayward and oblivious Nick was when the series first started! Although this series is very much made up of an awesome ensemble cast of characters, this still remained very much Nick’s story, and, boy, what an epic evolution this dude went through!
No spoilers on the plot! Frankly, it’s unnecessary. Just know that this story is NOT A STANDALONE and takes the characters in exactly the right direction all fans will undoubtedly enjoy, taking the action, hilarity and romance up the notch that was necessary for a truly spectacular trilogy wrap-up!

A great time was had, the ending was wrapped up, the epilogue was definitely a random highlight for me, I'm so happy to have a smol glimpse into the future for Seth/Nicky/Jazz/Gibby, and all together, the book was so nice and wonderful to have the whole gang wrap it up nicely.
I reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally wish there was more on page interactions with Seth/Nicky that were just sweet, and not Nicky being weird and Seth shaking his head or loving him anyway. I found there was so much wasted opportunity for feet-swinging cuteness over Seth/Nicky, but honestly, all 3 books kinda let me down on that front. (I'm sorry, I just had to say it, Nicky was alot, and he charmed me, but there was lack of cuteness between him and Seth after they actually realised their feelings in book 1. I saiddddddd what I saidddddd)
HOWEVER,
Honestly......... The book is more about the whole plot of characters, and Seth/Nicky whilst also being MC's were almost like... their own side characters because all the side characters, felt like MC'S??????
I'm tired.

I've been in a MASSIVE slump.

A satisfying conclusion to this YA fantasy trilogy, I felt this matured with each book, as well it should as our teen hero Nick and his loyal friends all go through a lot, learning about life, love, and themselves!
When we last saw Nick and company, they were a solid incognito crime fighting team, and Nick was trying to come into his newly realized powers and potential responsibilities, all the while dealing with familial secrets and betrayals. Flash Fire left readers wondering about the future fate of all Extraordinaires as nemesis Simon Burke introduced a seemingly benevolent offer to cure their powers for the safety of the public, hiding a yet to be seen but inevitable sinister self serving plan. Toss in an off kilter ex-boyfriend who had escaped prison and an unbelievable cliffhanger reveal, and there were many questions left to be answered.
Though this plot line started out nebulous and confusing, what unfolds was a scary twist. Many might not like this crazy development, but I felt it ultimately played out nicely, forcing the gang and their wonderful parents, friends, and family to really band together to fight Simon Burke’s evil maniacal agenda.
What I truly appreciate about these 3 books is that with Klune’s deserved popularity and move into a more mainstream avenue, I’m grateful that a bigger publisher in no way impeded his unique and trademark brand of humor, style, and over the top brazenness. This doesn’t hold back on touchy topics, the uncomfortableness of growing up, the squeamish/embarrassing but relevant challenges that all teens face, and Klune does it with frankness, truth, and outrageous hilarity and always with plenty of heart. It’s been a hot minute since I laughed so hard that I was crying, and then I soon found myself crying for real because of all the feels.
Overall, though some things in plot execution didn’t pan out as I wanted (do they 100% truly ever?), this still had a fitting conclusion that fell in line with the themes and messages of each book. Things can’t always end perfectly (tho it was pretty darn close), and that’s how life goes - sometimes it’s tough, sometimes it’s really really great, and often it isn’t fair.
Sooooo bad guys are going to do bad. Good guys are going to do their darnedest to stop them. There are certainly some setbacks, but this is fantasy fiction after all so don’t be too worried. Rest assured that our titular hero Nick definitely remains true to himself and learns plenty along the way as all YA stories go, leaving me with a big fat smile at the very end!

Now this is how you conclude a trilogy!
"And remember: we put the extra in Extraordinary. Let's do this."
Heat Wave ends the series on a high note. This is definitely my favourite of the three books. It's constructed so well, and seeing everything come together was epic. It has great action, it's super funny, has a strong friendship group, a perfect amount of romance and of course, it has the Dad Squad!!
"Miss Conduct will deal with the evil twink, with assistance from the DILF Squad"
"Dad Squad," Nick corrected automatically.
Miss Conduct stared at him. "I said what I said."
Sad that we won't get to see these characters again, but there's always the reread! Also, I this series would be perfect for a movie adaptation. I feel like Kit Conner would be the perfect Seth.

As a whole, I’ve enjoyed this series so much. The friendship group, families, and the found family of their group. I was so ready for the conclusion of Seth, Nick, and the rest of the crew’s story. Especially with how book 2 ended!
I’ll be honest, it took me quite sometime to get through this book. The first half was slow for me, and a bit confusing at times. Once I got about half way, I was fully engaged. No spoilers here, but the ending didn’t disappoint! I did hope for a different ending for a certain character… maybe some kind of redemption, but aside from that I loved seeing how things turned out for these guys!

This was such a great finale for a series and I didn’t know this was even possible but I loved all the characters even more than I loved them before?!
I mean Nicky and his father are the best! <333 I love them and their interactions so much. And their friends and the Dad Squad! Damn, I just loved everything about this book.

I think by now you can say that it’s one of my traditions to read a book written by T.J. Klune every summer during the holidays. So this time around, I decided for “Heat Wave”!
Because 1.) I’m so curious how this series is going to end and 2.) I finally need to finish one of the many series I started to read and this is the last book! XD And 3.) The title fits so perfectly to the summer heat over here. *lol*
I can’t wait to find out what’s going to happen with Nick and Seth in this instalment!
I love them both so much and I just want a great HEA for my two precious boys! <333

ahh what an amazing conclusion to the series!!! i was a littleee bit dumb at the start of this book because i'd forgotten most of what happened at the end of book #2, but once i worked everything out again, the book started getting really mysterious and incredibly captivating. i don't want to say anything spoilery, but just know that this was a really nice change to the previous books and definitely added something new to the trilogy, whilst still having TJ's classic humour and romance that we know and love!

To know Nick, Seth, Gibby, and Jazz is to love them and, three books later, it’s hard to let them go. I couldn’t wait to see what was next for Lighthouse but … there are no new Extraordinaries books for me to look forward to, so the only way I get to spend time with these kindred spirits again is to stalk them reread style.
I’d been desperately holding on after being practically thrown off a cliff at the end of the second book and for much of the first half of this one I sharpened my ability to gaslight myself. Meanwhile, it’s business as usual for Nick which, these days, means superhero training, although he’s keen to ditch the training wheels.
This book is bow ties, watermelon flavoured Skwinkles Salsagheti, code words and stabby forks. It’s also college applications, “Backflip of Chaos!”, relationship goals and villains from the past becoming villains of the present.
I’m having trouble coming up with sentences to tell you how much I love this series but if you’d seen how often I smiled while I was reading each book, you’d have a pretty good idea. These characters have taken up residence in my heart and it’s been an absolute joy getting to tag along as they make their world a better place. I’m more convinced than ever that I need a catchphrase.

“What’s the point of being an Extraordinary if I don’t get to be extraordinary?”This book was everything I hoped it would be. It made my heart go all melty. I’m having trouble coming up with sentences to tell you how much I love this series but if you’d seen how often I smiled while I was reading each book, you’d have a pretty good idea. These characters have taken up residence in my heart and it’s been an absolute joy getting to tag along as they make their world a better place. I’m more convinced than ever that I need a catchphrase.

I would die any day for these fictional teenagers
"I am extraordinary." Nick said to the wind.
This book was really all kinds of extraordinary! And yes, yes I know what I did just there, but alas, I'm sure Nicky would agree with my bad jokes, or at least the Dad squad would.
I had the absolute best time while reading this book, Klune TJ is indeed a fantastic writer, I have enjoyed all of his books, but oh boy, did I have fun reading Heat Wave. I spent most of the time laughing like crazy while Nicky, Seth, Gibby and Jazz had the most ridiculous adventures all while trying to fight evil, plus Burrito Jerry, talk about a random and funny side character!
I especially appreciated Nick's character growth through this series and how real his relationship with his friends and Dad felt, it was real, it was flawed, it was human, it was just beautiful.
Also, like Nicky had the best monologues!

I have no idea why I made myself read this whole series. I love TJ Klune, I love his fantasy and his adult books. This trilogy I cannot stand. Its just so much of what I hate reading. Yet I read it all. If you like annoying main characters, way to many sexual innuendos, unbearable amounts of second hand embarrassment this is for you. But I really recommend you read TJ klunes other books.

This book was perfect to me. This was the ending I most desired but it gave me so much more than I actually expected. It exceeded my expectations so much that it now lives rent free in my brain and heart.
TJ Klune knows how to walk the thin line between being too much for YA and being the perfect kind of YA, because teen nowadays do think and do these things. They do, and the way Klune wrote certain scenes, was extremely hilarious and I wouldn't wish this to any teenager alive; but in writing, these scenes were exactly the perfect way to portray, for example, a boy and his dad who bought him a very embarrassing thing. I spend most of the book giggling, then of course I also worried, because this is Klune, he is a master of pain when there needs to be some. And he does it so well! The book had to perfect mix of happiness, sadness, deep conversations, twists, angst, comedy, all wrapped in one of the queerest books in existence.
I think Klune is a fantastic storyteller and the things he has in his mind need to live on pages because they're masterpieces.
I adored the friendships, the family, the romance, the over the top situations, and the most random side characters. The dad squad stole the scene and you all need a dad squad in your life! Trust me, you do!

4.5 ⭐ and just like that, another amazing trilogy done! *cries*
this one was a bit different from the previous books, but i loved it anyway! the first 180 pages had me so confused, i thought i completely missed something, but then a twist happened and i went 'ooh now it makes sense' 🤣

i felt i kept expcting owen to change his mind until the very end, but was honestly a bit disappointed with what happened to him. but i'd say i was satisfied with the ending, yep, but if tj decided to write some novellas at some point in the future? yes, please!

I have received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Heat Wave is the third and final installment within The Extraordinaries series. It's pretty weird that I never read these books until now. I mean, I fell in love with Nick 2o seconds into the very first book. So, it shouldn't be a surprise to anyone with how quickly I devoured this entire series. Nick and Seth were my everything and I would fight anyone just to make sure that they get a happily ever after.
Their relationship was awkward at times but so adorable for the rest. Nick has no filter whatsoever and he just made me laugh all the freaking time. So, it's a little weird that this book didn't have the same amount of humor as the other two. It still had some, don't get me wrong, but I just wanted more humor within all the action.
I guess the upside to less humor is watching Seth and Nick get closer to one another. Their relationship definitely stepped up as they are getting a little bit older and bit more serious. We also get to see everyone struggle as well. Which made things a bit more realistic (for people who have superpowers).
Other than that, we also get to meet Nick's mom which confused the heck out of me. Mostly because I just didn't know if we could trust her because everything felt off and suspicious. In the end, I'm really happy that I got the chance to read this book and fall in love with this series. Will definitely be on the lookout for another one of T.J.'s books!

I am filled with such a biter sweetness over this trilogy coming to an end, but I honestly could not have envisioned a better way for Nicky's story to be wrapped up. Especially after that TERRIBLE cliffhanger book two ended on?? It is eventually resolved, and OH BOY IS THAT A DOOZY.
One of my all time favorite aspect's of Klune's writing is his ability to make me want to pass away from secondhand embarrassment for his characters, and Nicky. Sweet, sweet Nicky is so. damn. embarrassing. I'm one hundred percent sure I read at least 20% of this book through my fingers because I was MORTIFIED. I adore him.
Nicky and Seth also are just so incredibly soft and still very much in love in this book and I just think that's neat. I have loved watching Nick and Seth figure things out from book one, and seeing them together with their entire little mismatched found family kicking ass in this book is just SO MUCH. Also, can we just talk about my excessive amount of love for the Dad Squad and their mission to embarrass their children? Because, I LOVE. SO MUCH. Also, Burrito Jerry. Oh man, are ya'll gonna love Burrito Jerry.
Truly, this was such a joy and the best way I could see things ending for Team Lighthouse. I'm so excited to have this complete trilogy on my shelves.

4 stars for narration. Love Michael Lesley. By book 3 I got used to his voice choices and appreciated his story telling.
3.5 stars for the story.
This is the conclusion of the series.
Truths are exposed and bad guys are dealt with.
A dad squad was formed.
Young love grew stronger as well as friendships.
I didn't love what happened to Owen in the end. I wanted a different outcome for him. His dad was a horrible person. I was hoping for a story arc with redemption for him.
In the end it was an entertaining read with a nice wrap up.

Dad Squad: Greatest. Dads. Ever.
Wholesome: Honestly, this is just so overall wholesome. There are so many small, cute scenes and feel like they are designed to fix the world. And I love it.

I was definitely confused for the first few chapters, and actually questioned my memory, but then there were also hints in the text that something was ~happening~. Lots of twists, and also laughed so many times - honestly I think most of my enjoyment comes from the audiobook narrator, Michael Leslie, who is absolutely insanely talented, and somehow has a different voice for every single character!!! Not sure I would have like the over the top plot without his great interpretation.
Jazz and Gibby are somehow even more badass! Also just really love this quartet, they are definitely friendship goals.

3 1/2 stars. This was definitely the best book in the trilogy but I didn’t love any of them.
The characters did grow on me since the first book but they also matured somewhat.
I really did enjoy most of this book but felt it lost its track in the final act. I really don’t think I’d recommend the series unless you are a younger reader.

Okay, so, I didn't love this as much as book 1 or book 2. For most of the story I felt lost, and I knew something was off and as the reader I was supposed to know something was off, but I didn't like how weird everything was related to Nick and and his mom. All is cleared up but it kind of colored my opinion of the story thereafter.
Overall, this was not bad, but not awesome, which TJ can do without question. Could have been my mood, who knows.
Nick and Seth are a cute couple and Nick is super interested in things between them heating up, no pun intended. :D
The drama around The Villains was too much like real life. It was more than obvious real life issues were coloring the content of this book, and I didn't like that. I read to escape real life, otherwise I'd watch the news or read a non-fiction (which I do both). Books are my escape. I don't want to hear about defunding the police, or Trump references, or anything else. It was hard to immerse myself in this story because I kept being pulled out of the story by being reminded of real world events. I get the desire to do that, really I do, and there is a time and place for that. In a superhero type story where everything is supposed to unbelievable and you know, Marvel Comics like, I want to hear about Nick being telekinetic and Seth flying with fire, not about real world politics. I think I've beat the point to death. Moving on.
Aside from that, I wish things could have been happier for everybody. The drama they went through with Nick's mom was hard and it hurt to see them all suffering because of it. The Villains were super villainy, and the hero's superheroey (that's a word!), plus OMG DAD SQUAD! Talk about embarrassment! :D
Of course the hero's win, but I was sad to see the circumstances, which I won't go into details even using spoiler tags because you should not know certain things going in.
The epilogue was nice, though I wish I could have seen a more recent future, not like 10 years in the future. Maybe 1 year, that would have been cool. Of course they all end up together and everybody is happy and living the good life. What else can you expect from a Super Hero Romance Story Extraordinaire. I capitalized that so you know it's true. :D :D

Recommend this to fans of TJ and paranormal/fantasy style romances with teenagers.
