Unlocking His Heart #1

Imperfect Angel

Rate this book
Three days ago, all Maisy Norgate had was a stack of bills, about a gazillion jobs, and her sunny-as-hell outlook. Now, thanks to an uncle she never knew about, she’s inherited an ornate skeleton key with absolutely no idea what it’s for―or why she has it. Which is exactly when a ridiculously handsome guy claiming to be an angel shows up at her door and all hell breaks loose…

Nephilim Rhys Boyce cannot believe that Maisy is the new Keeper of the Key. Why would anyone bequeath this warm, bubbly redhead the key to Hell? And to make matters worse, she’s given the key to the first person who asked for it. A demon . Yep, Maisy is determined to make his job―not to mention some seriously inconvenient temptation―as hard as possible.

First a half angel with a very human chip on his shoulder must find a way to convince Maisy that angels and demons do exist. Then Rhys will have to break the really bad news…that she might have accidentally ended the world.

Each book in the Unlocking His Heart series is
* Imperfect Angel
* Hell of an Angel

The premise was intriguing and I hadn’t read any fantasy about angels before so I was curious. On top of that a grumpy angel sounded like fun. But I’m not sure this book was for me.

We follow Maisy, a waitress and an artist as she finds out, that she just received a peculiar inheritance. An uncle she never knew she had, had left her a large, antique-style key without a word of explanation. She has no idea what does the key open and what to do with it. Conveniently a locksmith who would love to have it approaches her. So Maisy gives the key away…

As it turns out the locksmith is a demon and the key opens the Hell’s worst prison’s gates. So to avoid Hell literally breaking loose she needs to get the key back stat and assume her role as its Keeper.

The task seems impossible but she has a grumpy and devastatingly handsome half angel at her side. His job is to support her mission and keep her safe.

I had a lot of trouble following what was going on between these two. In one moment they annoy each other to no end only to start kissing five minutes later. Wha- what? Did I miss something? Why are you kissing her dude? (And more importantly, why is she kissing you back?!)

But then after the kiss they just go about their business as if nothing happened. Until they unexpectedly kiss again and AGAIN don’t acknowledge it at all. I need my lovers to talk and bond, work through their relationship. Unfortunately there was none of that here.

On top of that Rhys was such a rude, haughty know-it-all I really could not connect with him.

”Habit had him opening his mouth to yell. To snap that the shitstorm that had been unleashed was entirely her fault.”
I’m sorry, I can’t love a hero who has such habits…

He improved a little as the story progressed but the damage was done.

Maisy was a little better than Rhys, but for a human she was just too good to be true. It was probably the point, as the Keeper should be good and worthy, but I didn’t find it credible.

What I did like about this story was that despite being based on Christian beliefs it mentioned beings from other cultures and religions too. I would have loved for the author to explore that part more; it would have enriched the story and made it more inclusive. It was also a badass move to imply that some angels were gay. Not sure the Pope would approve, but I surely do!

2.5 stars round up to 3

Imperfect Angel is an exciting and sexy paranormal romance. When an uncle she never knew existed leaves Maisy a key in his will, she never suspects to see a handsome man at her door claiming to be an angel. And when the angel tells her she is now the new Keeper of the Key to Hell, and he is there to protect her, Maisy’s chaotic life becomes even more complicated. Little does Rhys know, Maisy gave the key away, and now the pair has fourteen days to retrieve it so Maisy can claim her new role before all Hell breaks loose – literally.

I enjoyed Maisy’s story and the swoon-worth romance between her and Rhys. They are both well-developed characters, and Maisy is definitely the sunshine to Rhys’s grump. Maisy is feisty, selfless, and fierce, and she has a wicked sense of humor. She’s also really kind and compassionate. Rhys is also a badass, but he isn’t as kind and caring as Maisy, which is understandable considering the difficult life he’s had.

Initially, Maisy knows nothing about the supernatural world, which frustrates Rhys to no end. Plus, her eternal optimism, even in the midst of everything they face, irritates him. Does Maisy care? No. She is who she is, and she doesn’t change. I like that about her, and I like that she begins to break down the hard walls around Rhys. He’s very different once he lets Maisy in.

Maisy and Rhys have amazing banter, and many of their conversations made me laugh out loud. I love that, though faced with deadly obstacles and huge burdens, they find ways to laugh and sneak in some happier moments. Plus, they have a ton of chemistry, and their sexy scenes are equally steamy and tender.

The relationship between Rhys and his two best friends totally gives me bat boy vibes. Though their personalities are different, their friendship – the easy banter, the way they know each other so well, their trust and loyalty, are reminiscent of Rhysand, Cassian, and Azriel in the A Court of Thorns and Roses series. This isn’t a bad thing! I love the bat boys, and I loved Rhys, Zavier, and Gideon. I’d love to read more about them and Maisy’s best friend in future books.

I also thought the world-building and supernatural elements were really cool. There’s a big difference between the human and supernatural world, as Maisy quickly realizes, and it’s described and explored well. I liked the different demons introduced, the whole concept of having Keepers of the Gates, witches, half-angels, spirits, and more. Add to that the high-stakes plot, the action and danger, and the unexpected humor, and I found myself really engrossed in the story. It’s exciting and suspenseful, and a perfect paranormal romance for the spooky season.

Thanks to NetGalley and Entangled Publishing for providing me with a copy of the book. All thoughts are my own.

A feel-good book with perfect blend of paranormal and romance.

From start to the end I loved Rhys’ and Maisy’s interactions. They were hilarious, totally opposite but both had huge hearts. Their love language was arguing and I enjoyed their witty banter so much.
Maisy really made uptight Rhys grind his teeth in every
Interaction they had. I loved how he went from annoying with her arguing to finding it endearing. He was a lost cause from day 1. Their argument always brought a smile on my face.

From the beginning of the book itself I was interested and intrigued. Refreshing world building and I adored the secondary characters and the writing style.
I also loved and appreciate Maisy’s positive outlook/attitude. It was a breath of fresh air.

And this is my honest review for the next exchange of eARC.

Safe, recommended, colourful.

This was fun! Maisy inherits a key from an uncle that she didn’t even know that she had and a whole new world opens up to her. That key that Maisy inherited isn’t just a regular key since it is the key to Hell and she gave it away without knowing the power behind it. Rhys is a Nephilim, which means that he is half angel, and he will do everything to protect Maisy and help her get the key back.

I loved Rhys and Maisy together and thought that the story had enough excitement to keep things very interesting. I thought that Maisy’s backstory was really interesting and I enjoyed learning about some of the things that happened to her in her past. I thought that Rhys and his friends were great and I really enjoyed seeing them work together and use their abilities. Rhys and Maisy were a good fit and I thought that the chemistry between them was very well-done.

I believe that this is the first time that I have listened to the work of both Quinn Riley and Griswold Addams but I thought that they did a great job with this story. I liked the voices that they used in their reading and I thought that they expressed a lot of emotion in their reading. I thought that their voices complimented each other nicely and I had no problem listening to this book for hours at a time.

I would recommend this book to others. I found this to be a very entertaining story filled with fantastic characters, a lot of excitement, some romance, and a few demons. I look forward to reading more of this series soon!

Imperfect Angel
By Christi Barth

Imperfect Angel by Christi Barth is a fantastic paranormal romance with great world building and once you start, is very, very hard to put down.

Maisy and Rhys’ chemistry are off the charts, and I enjoyed their banter, their sizzling hot steamy scenes, and swoons moments.

Barth did an amazing job writing this light romantic read full of magical characters that were an absolute joy to read.

“I may not be the keeper you want but I’m the keeper you’ve got“

Nothing kicks off spooky season like a trip to the gates of hell. Mystery, fun, and mayhem is the best way to describe Imperfect Angel by Christi Barth. What does Maisie Norgate do when she learns she's the new gatekeeper to hell? Well, trying to stay alive is always a good way to start but with Rhys... heaven and hell never looked so good.

I really enjoyed this and I can't wait for more!

This book has an interesting premise but the actual content and execution missed the mark.

The plot had promise, but the pacing was much too slow and full of what felt like filler. The characters, while charming, were flat and the dialogue lacked the natural flow of typical conversations between people. Then there's the romance: it's insta-lovey (which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it was missing chemistry and relationship development), there's an attempt at grump/sunshine that I can't say was entirely successful, and I ultimately wasn't attached or rooting for Maisy and Rhys in the end.

I think this book could be an entertaining read for some, but unfortunately this wasn't for me.

I don’t know why, but this was not what I expected. But I really enjoyed it all the same.

My favorite part was the ending!!! I can’t tell you how much I appreciate being surprised by an ending, so refreshing!

Our MC, Maisy, is impossible not to love. She is kind but fierce: selfless, but not a pushover. They are amazing combinations that come together in this character,

I know it’s not just me…but I LOVE a protective love interest. So, obviously Rhys made me swoon!

I do hope this is a series because Zavier needs his own story!!! 😍

Imperfect Angel is a witty and thrilling paranormal romance. Christi Barth's world-building is fantastic. Once I began reading, I couldn't stop until I finished!

Maisy is an aspiring artist who incorporates art in all of her career ventures. She had always felt alone with no real family to turn to since the death of her parents when she was thirteen. But she is shocked to learn that she has an uncle who just recently passed. She attends the reading of his will and receives a skeleton key. Now, what could it possibly unlock? Maisy soon learns that it is the key to the gates of Hell and she is to become the Keeper of it.

This information is overwhelming and it gets a bit more bearable when Rhys, a Nephilim (half angel, half human) starts to explain the paranormal world to her. He is a grumpy hero and likes to stick to the rules. To say he isn't in touch with his emotions would be an understatement. He sees emotions as a weakness and since his job is to protect others, in this case, protect Maisy, he is sticking to the plan.

After Rhys learns that Maisy gave away the key to a demon parading as a human locksmith, they are in a time crunch to get the key back. If they don't, then all Hell will break loose (literally). Rhys and his friends (Zavier and Gideon) work to keep Maisy and her bestie Liss safe while always working to find the key.

It's so fun to see Rhys and Maisy work together because they are complete opposites. According to Rhys, Maisy is too optimistic about everything. Her sunshine personality gets on his nerves but he soon learns that she can be tough, stubborn, and take charge when need be. Soon, their hate starts to turn into something more along the lines of love. Their chemistry is fiery especially when they argue. Arguing is their love language and that leads to some steamy scenes.

Rhys begins to open up and realize that maybe feeling something for someone isn't so bad. But he also understands why love can be a weakness. Now, that they are running against the clock and facing evil, he is terrified that something bad could happen to Maisy. And when Maisy starts to panic in tough moments, that fear is heightened. Will Rhys be able to protect Maisy? Will Maisy find the key and stop the evil that will ensue if she doesn't?

I give Imperfect Angel 5 stars. I loved the chemistry between Maisy and Rhys and I was so impressed by the world-building. The story flowed so perfectly together and I finished it in one sitting. I can already picture more books for these characters because I feel like there is more to tell. Fingers crossed for an Imperfect Angel series. I'd totally be down to read more books!!

If this is the imperfect version of an angel, please don't let anyone correct it. Lock me up with him and even hell would be heaven; Maisy honey, hide those keys.

Witty, refreshing, entertaining, a read to devour in one sitting. Angels, demons, witches and all the creatures in between, including the naive human who inherited and lost the key to hell, live the adventure everyone desire: be it saving the world from its imminent end, or the part when you meet the love of your life on the way.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Thanks for the opportunity.

A grumpy angel has to convince a girl who thinks she's perfectly normal that she actually is responsible for guarding one of the gates to hell? Sound right up my alley! I thought there were some really creative ideas here but I struggled to get into this one. I didn't connect that much with the characters so I was less interested in learning the details of the paranormal world. There was also moments that I found funny then I hoped for. There also wasn't anything wrong with this book, it just didn't particularly capture my interest. I think it might be a better fit for plot driven readers since I tend to be more of a character driven reader.

I listened to the audiobook version of this book and the narrator really didn't work for me. The emphasis was odd and the female voices sounded like children. I recommend the book version of this title.

Fans of rom-coms and fantasy will enjoy this new paranormal romance.

When an uncle Maisy never heard of dies and leaves her a mysterious key, she doesn't know what to do with it. When a locksmith shows interest in the key she lets him have it. Maisy doesn't know that the key makes her a Keeper to one of the Gates of Hell. When Rhys, a Nephilim and her guard, shows up at her door the pair have to work together to get the key back.

The grumpy-sunshine trope was so much fun. Maisy is the essence of sunshine and Rhys is beyond grumpy. The banter between the two was a lot of fun. Add in a little forced proximity and their friends and I found myself laughing quite a bit.

This was a slow-burn. The two steamy scenes were actually pretty spicy but it took so long to get there….even with all the tension. Slow-burn fans will love it.

The story is heavily focused on trials they face as they battle tests and a host of demons to retrieve the key.

I'm compelled to mention that Rhys has wings 🔥 and his friend's Zavier and Gideon give bat boy vibes. I loved the bromance between the 3 and want more.

This was a fun book. It was a quick and light read and I'm hoping we get more of this paranormal world of demons, witches, and more.

I have read a handful of other books by Christi. They have all been contemporary romances. So, this paranormal romance book is a nice switch up. The quirky humor was what I loved the most about this book. Maisy and Rhys shared some witty banter. Rhys definitely had his hands full with Maisy. The romance between these two was sweet with a kick of spice.

While I did enjoy this book, I did find that it seemed to move along kind of slowly at times for me. Where I would find myself rereading passages. This is partly due to the fact that it was not instalove for me with Maisy and Rhys. I "liked" them, but it was not until later in the story that I "loved" them. Despite my feelings about this book, I would read another paranormal romance by this author.

Thank you to TLC Book Tours and Entangled Publishing for this advanced copy of Imperfect Angel, published October 25.

This paranormal romance was so much fun! This felt like a throwback to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but with a hot half angel and steamy romance. Maisy unexpectedly inherits a key that turns out to be for the Gates of Hell. Maisy is so good and kind hearted and also kind of a badass. She calls out misogyny wherever she sees it, including in hell. Rhys is a bodyguard who regularly goes on missions to fight demons with his fellow Nephilim Gideon and Zavier.

The book had lots of mystery and suspense and life and death fights of good and evil. I loved learning along with Maisy about the different kinds of paranormal creatures. And the nod to how prejudice even shows up among various otherworldly beings was quite well done. There was a part of the paranormal world building near the end that I found confusing and would have liked a longer explanation of. But overall, I was completely drawn into Maisy's quest.

And I loved Maisy and Rhys and their great chemistry. I would love to read more books in this world and to see how Gideon and Zavier find love.

TLDR : I would recommend this book to fans of Lucifer (2016-2021) in a heartbeat. It reminded me a lot of that show. The first half goes slow but then it picks up the pace and gets more and more interesting towards the end. Writing had some hiccups. There could have been more exploration of this new world the heroine is thrust into. But ultimately, I enjoyed it.

***

The ultimate throwback to my teenage years : the chosen zero plot. Oh, how I missed it. Eragon anyone ? Kung Fu Panda ? I went into such a deep nostalgic vortex while reading this, rewatching my favorites like W.I.T.C.H and Juniper Lee.

Maisy : “A man who never contacted me, not even after my parents were killed, gave no indication at any point that he knew or cared I existed, made a point of paying for the time of a lawyer to draft a will only to leave me a mystery key ?”

Not only that but the key comes with great responsibility and three gorgeous supernatural hunks. Unfortunately, this is not a reverse harem. Fortunately, Rhys is interesting enough to make up for that lapse in judgment. He’s cool as hell, albeit a tad undercooked. But he’s got the ideal book boyfriend lines like ;

“Don’t ever scare me like that again.” [...] Nothing can happen to you. Do you hear me ?”

Careful there Rhys, you just might make me swoon ! Anyways, Imperfect Angel has likable characters, lovable sidekicks and an interesting plot that starts slow. The first half is mostly spent on mcs getting to know each other. Which is fine because it gets much better after a while. The pace quickens and the plot thickens and that’s where I started to truly enjoy the book. All of it leads to an open ended HEA. So maybe we might expect a second book. Also, there were very interesting side characters (the witch and Lilith for example). It would have been amazing to read more about them instead of Rhys’s lovesick ramblings.

So yes, that’s my constructive criticism : A little subtlety is just what the doctor ordered for this book. Maisy looks a certain way and Rhys immediately goes into his thoughts explaining in great detail how that look is very distinguished from all other humans. Maisy holds a finger up and again, I’m in Rhys’s head, learning how that finger holding sets her apart. Maisy does anything and Rhys is determinedly trying to convince me why she’s bold or worthy or whatever. I’m starting to think Maisy might be the main character. I’m starting to think Rhys might be a dumbass (very much in love, but still a dumbass).

***

As someone who hasn't read fantasy in many years this was such a great book to get back into it!

Maisy and Rhys are great main characters and their personalities really make you laugh out loud at times.

When I first read the synopsis of this book I couldn't wait to dive into it. Not only is it spooky season, but I do love a good Nephilim romance and when you add in the grumpy sunshine trope, it's a no-brainer, I have to read it.

For me, this story started off really promising. I thought the premise was unique and it really had me intrigued. When we first meet up with Maisy, she's been given a key at a will reading for an uncle she never knew existed. She has no clue what the key does, what it unlocks, or why her uncle would want her to have it and can't seem to get rid of it fast enough. Now, I don't know about you, but I'd be curious enough to hold on to it and see what I could find out about it, but that's just me. Unfortunately for Maisy, the key is more important than she realizes and it sets off a series of crazy and unexpected events....

Overall, this book was just an ok read. I wanted to love it so much, but it just didn't live up to my expectations. Don't get me wrong, I love, love, love stories that deal with Nephilim. I think that there are so many fun things writers can do with the paranormal romance genre and I was really looking forward to this author's spin on things.

As I previously stated, this book started off really promising. It was a fun and refreshing take on paranormal romance and it had me really intrigued. But somewhere along the way, it lost its steam. I don't know if it was the pacing or the writing style, but I found myself quickly losing interest. Like at first I really found the banter between Rhys and Maisy to be entertaining but unfortunately, it got old really quickly. It just wasn't enough to keep me interested. And while I felt some sparks between Rhys and Maisy, I felt like their relationship was rushed and didn't deliver in all of the ways I was hoping. Don't get me wrong, these two had plenty of steam together, but I needed more of a reason to root for them two to find their happily ever after.

At the end of the day, I think this will be one of those books that you're either going to love or you're going to hate. Sadly, for me, this book was more of a miss than a hit. The reason I'm rounding this book up to 3 stars is that even though it wasn't perfect or a true hit for me, is because I do think it was different and unique. I think this story had a lot of great potential and I do think that some readers will really enjoy this book. It just wasn't for me.

IMPERFECT ANGEL

Release Date: 10/25/22
Kindle Unlimited: [ ]YES [X]NO
Stand-alone: [X]YES [ ]NO
Author: Christi Barth
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫/5
Spiciness rating: 🌶🌶/5
POV: Dual, third person
Main Characters: Maisy & Rhys
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Tropes: opposites attract; grumpy/sunshine; Nephilim/human; heroine in danger; protector hero

Review:

When Maisy receives a key from the uncle she didn’t even know she had her life changes completely. She didn’t know the key was very important and that she was the guardian. Nephilim Rhys has the mission to protect her and when they start with the wrong foot, everything goes badly and they have to find a way to save Maisy and the whole world.

I guess the line that separates a sassy heroine from an annoying one is really tenuous and Maisy was often tending towards annoying. She was combative and disagreed with everything just on principle. Rhys was not the most patient of creatures, but he was infinitely more patient than I am.

However, both characters have their good side and their journey to find the key having to fight villains and Maisy discovering more about the supernatural world was the most interesting part. I felt that sometimes they lost track of the mission with Maisy being stubborn and that’s why I couldn’t rate it higher.

This was both enjoyable and irritating - A fun read

Maisey drove me nuts - she seemed almost clueless half the time and the rest of the time split between a touch too fanciful and a bit rude

Rhys came across as overbearing, though not on purpose IMO, he just didn't know how to handle a swinging Maisey
And the entire mess they were both in

The tennis match of affection between them was almost comical
It was almost like if we don't speak of it then it never happened
A kiss here, a touch there
It's hard to explain their relationship
One minute they were oil and water
The next - some serious chemical combustion

The supporting characters were solid
Gid and Z were comic relief
Liss was Maisey's ride or die

The story was pretty evenly paced -
One "oh no" or "what the heck" events were one after another and kept me on my toes

I do wish the romance had a bit more - IDK- communication, fluidity?
Overall though entertaining bedside or beach read and will be looking for the next in the series

Maisy is pure of heart and sees the good in everyone. Rhys, her handler, has been around long enough to know the world is not all sunshine and roses. What happens when the two of them must work together to save the world? You get an amazing roller coaster read ! Imperfect Angel is a fun, exciting, steamy paranormal romance.

All the paranormals get a shout out: Witches. Demons. Ghosts. Angels. NephIlim and Mythological creatures.

Christi has blended together two of my favorite characters: Bad ass Rachel Morgan and bumbling but always-gets-her-man Stephanie Plum. Thank you for creating such a wonderful character. A must read if you are a fan of the aforementioned characters.

Quirky, comical, and sweet!

Imperfect Angel is a cute, steamy, action-packed romance that takes you into the life of Maisy Norgate, a spirited young woman who finds herself inadvertently in need of help from the sexy Nephilim Rhys Boyce, a half angel half human being, when she becomes the new “Keeper of the Key” to the gates of one of Hell’s worst prisons, and all sorts of demons, angels, and magical creatures come calling.

The writing is light and playful. The characters are impulsive, feisty, and amusing. And the plot is an adventure-filled tale full of danger, temptation, mystique, chemistry, attraction, witty banter, humorous mishaps, and supernatural characters.

Overall, Imperfect Angel is a humorous, charming, unique tale by Barth that is the perfect choice for anyone who loves a little spice, a dab of romance, and a whole slew of paranormal, unconventional fun.

Imperfect Angel was such a cute paranormal romance. Maisy is an ex-teacher of art who is left a key by an uncle she has never met after he passes away and writes to her in his will. Rhys is a half-angel who finds he is meant to protect her as the new gate keeper to hell. Quirky, funny, and overall entertaining, the book covers the start of their relationship to save the human world from demons. This was a great mix of romance, comedy and spooky. Overall a cute read for spooky season.

IMPERFECT ANGEL is an overall entertaining paranormal rom-com. Maisy is an artist who works 2 jobs to make a living, when she learns that an uncle she had never heard of had passed away and left her a mysterious inheritance. To her continued surprise, it is a strange looking key that comes without any instructions, so when the sketchy lawyer offers her a way to move it along, she agrees.

Rhys is a nephilim, and one of his tasks is to help protect the new Keeper as they come into their new supernatural job. As he meets up with Maisy, he begins to realize that he really has his work cut out for him, since she has no idea what the key meant or the true nature of the world and that she has passed the key along to a demon. He must convince her of the severity of the task and the importance of the role she will play in it all. As they work and bicker, they also find an attraction that begins to run deeper the more time they spend together.

The story was consumed by the tasks laid before them, particularly by the challenges Maisy must face to become the next Keeper. The romance was strong with an enemies-to-lovers type flair of bickering while getting to know each other. The book feels pretty lengthy in the middle and the romance definitely takes a backseat to the paranormal plot. The characters can also be a bit much at times, with exaggerated personalities at times. That being said, it was still an overall enjoyable story with some funny and steamy moments here and there.

Overall, IMPERFECT ANGEL is a paranormal romantic comedy that will appeal to readers who enjoy stories with questing, destiny, and plenty of bickering. Please note that I received an eARC. All opinions are my own.

Short Review: Totally hot half angel/half man and lots of steam? Sign me up.

Long Review: I really enjoyed the whole concept of Niphilim, a keeper of the key to the gates of Hell, and the whole darn mystical being world that Barth has built.

I think the flow gets a little wonky in some spots and writing repetitive. I got a few Twilight Bella/Edward vibes with Maisy and Rhys and for this reader that was a thumbs down, but I think the concept of this story is great and totally loved the steam.

I hope to see more of Rhys and his hot Nephilim counter parts in the future!

I loved it. I loved the contrast of how upbeat and optimistic Maisy versus how grumpy and sometimes rude Rhys was. They made an interesting couple but that made it more fun. I also liked Rhys' friendship with Gideon and Zavier. If you like paranormal romance, this book is for you. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced reader copy.

2/10 - Very flat characters. The MMCs were straight out of ACOTAR! The plot was strange and the descriptions were half baked. Not my favorite.

Thanks to NetGalley for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Maisy is an eternal optimist. She is an unemployed art teacher working as a barista, but she still sees the good in people and looks for the bright side of every situation. I love that about her! When she inherits a strange key from an uncle she's never heard of, she suddenly finds herself involved in a paranormal world and on a quest to become Keeper of one of the gates of hell. In this situation, Maisy's impulsiveness is often reckless, and I could completely understand Rhys's frustration. Rhys is one of the Nephilim (half man/half angel) assigned to be Maisy's bodyguard. Unfortunately, since he and the others are kept in the dark about their full mission, they end up dealing with a lot of unexpected problems, although they do learn to work together. It was very satisfying to see them both grow, bringing out the best in each other. Overall, I very much liked the characters and their interactions. The plot is just silly enough to be entertaining, and the underlying message was warm and positive. Witty banter among the three Nephilim as well as between Rhys and Maisy provided a lot of amusing moments. All in all, a winner for Barth.

I'm going to be honest (as usual), if this weren't an ARC, I would've DNF'd this around the 15% mark. But I feel guilty when I don't finish ARCs, so here we are. This shit book gave me a reading slump, rage and made me lose at least a third of my brain cells. Was it worth not feeling guilty? Absolutely fucking not.

Characters

Maisy is the most insufferable, stupid, [insert any other negative adjective] character. She's continually stupid and makes the dumbest decisions. Oh, a half-angel man, who literally just saved me, wants me to move in with him so I can be safe? No thanks. There's a demon attacking us? Lemme just grab a fucking baking pan to use as a shield. Her decisions pissed me off non-stop.
She's also praised for being literally the most average human to exist. She's happy? Wow, do you want a medal? She doesn't cower down like an "ideal" woman from centuries ago? Damn, one of a kind I must say.

As for Rhys, he was almost equally stupid and annoying. His only personality was being horny for Maisy (for legitimately no reason) and being The Protector. Basic, bland and boring.

Character Inconsistencies

There were several cases where the characters randomly did something that didn't make any sense because of their personality.

I have 2 examples:

1. Rhys, the big, grumpy half-angel man, says aww?? Makes no sense.
2. Maisy constantly references and knows about mythology, but when they say Lilith she decided she doesn't know that one? Mkay.

Writing

The writing was weird. It was a case of telling instead of showing. At times we suddenly skip to a different scene with no warning and I was just confused. Also, the way the characters' thoughts were written felt unrealistic. No one thinks like that.

Romance

The only reason I asked for this in the first place was because I knew it was smut and a romance between a human and a Nephilim. I wanted the filet mignon of guilty pleasure and what I got was a chewed-up piece of cartilage.
The romance was confusing, they hate each other but also want to fuck each other immediately. They kiss and then "Actually, no, I still hate you". And then out of nowhere (literally in the span of 2 weeks) "I think I'm in love with you". No.
As for the smut, not even entertaining. There are only 2 scenes if I remember correctly, and it was just bad.
"With their hands still connecting their hearts, Maisy impaled herself on Rhys."
Excuse me but what the actual fuck did I just read with my eyeballs.

Woke

The author constantly forces down the reader's throat the fact that Maisy, as well as her friend and the witch, are woke, feminist women. The book is filled with buzzwords and I just can't.

"Your attempt to restate it in a better light doesn't remove the misogynistic, patriarchal heavy-handedness of this plane"
Sorry, but who actually speaks like this?

Overall, really, REALLY, not for me. If you like paranormal romance, this might be for you but I highly doubt it. Officially the worst book of the year so far.

This ARC was provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
