As 1995 wound to a close, Katherine Krige prepared to leave home. Her father died when she was five years old, but she had always dreamed of learning more about him and where he came from. With university behind her, she aimed to find out. The trick was that his hometown was 13,000 kilometers away. After a few letters to long-lost kin, a plan was put in motion. She gathered a passport, planned some initial adventures, and gamely left her old life behind. As soon as she stepped off the plane in Cape Town though, those plans quickly began to fall apart. Over the next several months, she learned more about her father's homeland, and herself, as she trekked across Southern Africa. It wasn’t always easy, but growth never is. Take a leap of faith and join Katherine as she explores her fears, sheds some tears, makes new friends, meets family, and experiences an incredible, life-changing journey that spanned 10 countries over 10 months. Grab a backpack...let’s go!

A great first book from London, Ontario writer, Katherine Krige. I admire how Katherine reflected on her life as a young adult in a slow travel visit back to her roots. All told she traveled to 10 countries over 10 months. Her adventures throughout Africa at such a young age are nothing short of amazing. As we discussed this in our book club (great pick/discussion, BTW) and were amazed at her courage in an era void of cell phones and laptops. It was all about a call to check-in and a letter here and there. Otherwise, it was traveling with friends in a van. Doesn't get much better than that!

With a start in South Africa to visit family Katherine in a chance meeting in the JoBurg airport with a high school friend, Katherine starts to travel with Miki, her brother and a friend of hers. They bought a baby blue 1970s VW van and traveled to Swaziland, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Malawi. Adventures included wildlife encounters with lions, van breakdowns and friendly encounters. As the group slowly made tracks for home or other destinations, Katherine traveled on her own to Kenya, Tanzania, Namibia.

This memoir will inspire you to travel the African continent with abandon. It gives you the courage to go it alone and meet your own 'peeps' along the way.

Take a chance on this easy, entertaining memoir... I had trouble putting it down.
