The romance is nice, but the gameplay is actually better. I don't even like LoL and was still very invested in the matches, it's just that damn good. Also the characterization is just *chef's kiss*
the secondhand embarrassment was off the charts it was funny but i genuinely wanted to throw up 🫠never in my life have i been so embarrassed on a main characters behalf.
anyways rly easy read prob could have finished it in one day but the secondhand embarrassment was too much i had to take breaks. wasn’t bad but wasn’t the best. i won’t reread it but it wasn’t a waste of time.
I don't play League of Legends, so when I picked up this novel (and it's very exciting, huh), I did the following:
1. Watched a previous LOL Worlds match to get a feel of the stage environment. 2. Asked my students what the third number in the #/#/# meant (because I immediately understood what the first two were for, based on the author's description of the fights, but the third number felt vague). 3. Googled champion names for their images. 4. Hung out at Riot's website. 🤣 5. Watched a Cassiopeia pentakill gameplay footage to see if it really is possible to do what the author described. 😅
It's from 酱子贝, the same author who wrote "Guide on How to Fail at Online Dating" (网恋翻车指南), but I find that I like this better because there were more gameplay battles, and the side characters (who have their own extras) deserve a longer story of their own. Can't say much more without spoiling it, but of all eSports novels I've read, this is among the rare ones that I'm currently re-reading. Especially my favorite tournament matches. (Like the chapter where the protagonist, after an invigorating kill, says, "Do you need to pause?")
I've read so many danmei at this point that it's hard for me to feel interested in something but this was quite fun. It's a esports webnovel. The strength of this webnovel is the main romance, specifically, the main character. He is SO. CUTE. I loved how much of a tsundere he is. Story-wise, it was rather average. I've only read a couple of esports stories but they are all very similar. Anyway, the fluff and the romcom shenanigans makes this book worth it (although I did lose interest a bit by the end...)
Hm. This is the second time I read a story about esport. The first one was FOG. So I can't help but compare the two. And I can certainly say that I like FOG better, there's a lot more plot going on. This one is very funny too, but again, FOG is also funny, so.... Also the characterizations are almost identical. I like this one but if I could choose between this and FOG to reread, I'd choose FOG in a heartbeat.
jiang zi bei 🫡 i love their works so much and wxrwl is a really good introduction. i’m a suck for esports danmei so this plot was really attractive to me and i even searched up LoL terms and champions. cp真的好可爱 爱死啦 even picked up the audio drama because it was that good and i couldn’t get enough of soft :”
