'But the return is not always easy, especially when the world has moved on without you, when the people who were rooting for you have now found other heroes to support.' When Pullela Gopichand had to undergo a risky arthroscopic surgery, chances of his full recovery were not great. His return to the badminton court seemed a far-fetched dream. The odds were stacked against him. Then, in 1998, he won the bronze in the Commonwealth Games. His biggest win was yet to come. In 2001, Pullela became the second Indian to win the All England Championship. This is the story we know. From not being able to walk to winning the most prestigious title in badminton, this is Pullela the player. But his success hasn’t stopped at just him. The Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy, set up in 2008, boasts of a host of World No. 1s including Saina Nehwal and Srikanth Kidambi and World Badminton Champion PV Sindhu. What is it about his teachings that propels players right to the top? In his official autobiography, we meet Pullela the coach. Through his own voice, as well as those of his students, mother, and wife, we get a look at the mind that revolutionised the game. We are shown not only what it takes to get to the top, but also, and more importantly, how to stay there. With the principles of his play laid bare, we are invited to apply them to our own everyday lives. In doing so, we ask questions, take accountability for our actions and perhaps find the answer to the greatest question of all—what does it take to become a champion?
“The fear of getting hurt, physically and emotionally, is the deterrent that keeps people from giving their best. People will deny their purpose, they will deny love and they will deny their destiny because they are afraid of getting hurt.”
When Pullela Gopichand had to undergo a risky arthroscopic surgery, chances of his full recovery were slim. His return to the badminton court seemed a far-fetched dream. The odds were stacked against him. Then in 1998 he won bronze in the Commonwealth Games. His biggest win was yet to come. In 2001 Pullela became the second Indian to win the All England Championship. Shuttler's flick is not just a book it's an inspirational quest to quench the thirst of every champion out there. It's not just a simple biography but something much more, a bible of wisdom and motivation to give you the right amount of push to do better every day, the simplest way to experience how passion drives a human being from no one to become someone.
"Failure, like success is always personal. Both are transient Don't allow them to break your heart and mess up your head. Get ready for the next day, the next project, the next round.”
This book dives deeper into the life of Gopichand and annotates the key lessons to learn from the life of this legendary, this book is not just for sportspersons but every single person who never want to settles for less, who wants to achieve their dreams. The simple writing style made this book more relatable and easy to take in. Most noteworthy thing about this book is each chapter has Gopichand's own narrative at the end along with important takeaways from the chapter and a small reminder to oneself to ponder upon. Another key features is it has Gopichand's other family members narrative as well, like sometimes his mother's and sometimes his father's, this whole concept made this book more heartwarming.
Badminton use to be a sport once dominated entirely by the stalwarts mostly from China ,Japan ,Korea and Thailand but thankfully today our nation has also been able to make its presence felt and a huge chunk of credit for that goes to the coach - Pullela Gopichand ji who has been serving the sport and the country ever since he come into picture. But very little is known about Pullela-the player especially to the current generation and this book by ace writer Priya Kumar who doesn't need any introduction herself is a lovely attempt in making people especially the younger lot aware about him as a legendary player that he was .
Contrary to other novels by the author which takes time to build up ,this directly picks up pace from the outset when we are introduced to a gruelling encounter between the two future stars of their respective nations and how it was during the All England Championship in 2001 when Pullela became a household name. Also the focus soon shifts to the early days of the legend and how his relentless struggle and his parents' countless sacrifices made him even more determined to make it big.
The biography as one would expect when two greats combine is very well written. Despite being from a non sporting background the way author has explained the intricate details of the matches and those nervy moments make you feel as if its happening in front of you. Also the little snippets of constant wisdom by the author from the life of Pullela in regular intervals makes the reading experience even more surreal.
Overall a book with life long lessons that compels you to posess that competitive gene and a burning desire inside you all the time.
This is the autobiography of famous former badminton player Pullela Gopichand. Now he the Chief National Coach for the Indian Badminton team. He even trained other famous players like Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu.
In this book he talks about how he achieved such success and how we can achieve it too. Every chapter contained his experience along with some insights. Through this book we can get a look at his mindset and what made him a legendary badminton player.
He is definitely an admirable and strong person. He had serious injuries and yet he managed to make a comeback and become the World Champion. You can see how he got there, through sheer hardwork and determination.
The language was easy and comprehensive. If you are new to biography or nonfiction, you'd find this book very easy to get into.
Overall, this was a motivational and eye opening book for me. I enjoyed reading it and also learned new things from this book. I'd highly recommend this book!
SHUTTLER'S FLICK: Making Every Match Count by Pullela Gopichand and Priya Kumar is an autobiography of the Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy, set up in 2008. It included Saina Nehwal and Srikanth Kidambi and World Badminton Champion PV Sindhu. Being a best player and a coach, Pullela Gopichand had to undergo a risky arthroscopic surgery but he didn't gave up. He fought and returned back to the badminton court which was unbelievable. Besides this, he was the second Indian to win the all England championship.
To know more about his journey, how did he fought every obstacle and what does it takes to become a champion, do read this amazing book.
A journey from not being able to walk to winning the prestigious title. This autobiography of not giving up in any obstacle is a true inspiration. The writing style is gripping. The language used is simple and understandable. The title and cover is apt. Overall it was a amazing inspiring read. I would recommend this book to readers who love autobiographies.
I have been a massive fan of Pullela Gopichand for a long time - not just because of his individual achievements, or his single-handed contributions to producing a large crop of world-class Indian shuttlers, but also the humble and sage manner that he has conducted himself always. Therefore, this was a book I was really looking forward to. And you do get a detailed peek into his life and career, through a mix of voices - the biographer, his family members, players he has coached, and the stalwart himself. You sit and admire as you learn about his devotion, discipline and fortitude, to make his talent count and make a mark against all odds - career-threatening injuries & surgeries, negligible support infrastructure, lack of recognition, etc. What's even more admirable is how he immersed his post-playing life immediately to the development of the sport in the country. Gopi sir/bhaiyya fills the book with a treasure trove of practical life lessons across the different chapters - his deep wisdom and clarity of thought shining through.
However, the book falls short on several counts, and the primary responsibility lies with the biographer Priya Kumar. The content she covers is less about Gopi's story, but more of self-help counsel and life advice, going overboard and repetitive in every chapter. She even goes to the extent of stating blatant mis-truths in desperate attempts to eulogize him - Gopi becoming top-ranked player in the world, his academy is the best private sporting academy in the world, etc. - which smacks of immaturity as an author. Finally, I would have loved to learn more about his coaching career, building and managing multiple current stars across the years - the book doesn't get into much details on that front.

Pullela Gopichand, for those living under a rock, is a former Indian Badminton player who currently is the chief National coach for the Indian national badminton team. He has won several awards including the all Indian open Badminton Championship in 2001 becoming the 2nd Indian to achieve this feat after Prakash Padukone. He runs the Gopichand Badminton Academy .He received the Arjuna Award in 1999 and Dronacharya Award in 2009 and the Padma Bhushan- the third highest civilian award in 2014.
With these many ups and downs in his career Gopichand surely has had an amazing career to be reading about. It is very engaging as a book.
Here's a snippet from the blurb the book "from not being able to walk to winning the most prestigious title in badminton this is the player but his success hasn't stopped at just him . The Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy set up in 2008 post of number world world number one including Saina Nehwal and Srikanth kidambi and the World Badminton Championship PV Sindhu.
My personal favourite chapter from the book was Chapter 9 , which talked about competition and the competitive gene. There were several life-lessons that I could relate to on a personal level.
In this book we see the perspectives of several people including Pulella himself, his wife, his students ,his mother, his coach and many others.
This book has been co-written with the infamous motivational speaker Priya Kumar. So the book is a self help mixed with an autobiography. You see parts of Gopichands life and Kumar explains how these challenges can be overcommed by us. Here's a quote "Your future is your responsibility. Don't live in denial. Take responsibility for the consequences that surround you then I will only increase the volume of your mistakes and ignorance that will eventually come out change the story while you can in your effort to become better than your last game".
Shuttlers Flick Pullela Gopichand With Priya Kumar
This book is a biography of Pullela Gopichand who is very famous for his coaching style. he is currently work as Head coach of Indian badminton team. he also runs Gopichand Badminton Acadmy.
In Recent years (4-5 years) Badminton becoming so famous because of some players which make india proud by winning the games internationally few of them are
Saina Nahwal PV Sindhu
come to the journey of P Gopichand is not easy one as there is saying
People see the Results but not efforts.
He suffered sever injuries during his badminton career . The journey is never easy one and hurdles in his life at every stage but he defeated the odd and won Bronze in commonwealth Game in year 1998 which become turning point of his career. the most important part of the book which i like most.
With the principles of his play laid bare, he given ideas to apply them to our own everyday lives. In doing so ask questions, take accountability for our actions and perhaps find the answer to the greatest question of all—what does it take to become a champion ?
The color photographs add much more essense to the book and give clearer idea. The Sign copy + Hardcover + Bookmark is icing on the cake
" Aggression may win you some games, but patience will win you a great life whether you win or lose "
Which Sports book you read recently ?
this is my second book on sports after Ravi Shastri
As we know Shuttler's flick: making every match count is the biography of Pullela Gopichand so now let us know a little bit about him. Pullela Gopichand is a former badminton player and is well known for winning the All England Open Badminton Championship in 2001. He is the receiver of prestigious awards like the Arjuna award, Padma Shri, Padma Bhusan, Dronacharya award and many more. He also founded Gopichand Badminton Academy in 2008 and since then he is working as a coach who has produced players like Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu under his guidance.
Now you will think that Ahh I ain't interested in sports then why should I read the biography of a former sportsman? Then let me tell you, this is much more than just a biography, this is a treasure of pragmatic wisdom which can be applied in every walk of life. The learnings discussed act like a dose of motivation with a realistic approach that will help you in becoming more productive.
Sharing some of the insights gathered from this book: 🌿 A physical setback is not a deal-breaker as long as your mind is in your control. 🌿Facilities don't make champions, challenges do. 🌿Resources could be scarce but a person who has a resourceful mindset will never be set back. 🌿Bird that sits on your hands also shits on your hands. That's a part of nurturing process. 🌿 A true champion is someone who can look back into his past and can say that he has no regrets and is happy with his efforts no matter what the output has been.
Post-Covid our lives are not the same anymore, this new normal is very discouraging at times and I must say the valuable insights shared in this book helped me a lot in coping with post-covid anxiety and depression issues.
Also, Priya Kumar has done commendable work. I loved the flow of the book. I don't think a biography can be co-authored in a better way. I have fallen for her narration style. Just trust me and don't give even a second thought before picking this up. Hope you pick it up super soon.

The book is a journey through turmoils and hurdles of life. This book is all about precision and detail in the field of work settling for anything less than perfection. His dedicatinal journey through the physical challenges and injuries defines the mindset of a true Champion. The book potrayed the legendary Pullela Gopichand as a best badminton player to the amazing coach with minute detailings. Besides a sports person, the book also highlighted Pullela Gopichand as a perfect champion. There is a small picture album about some of the emotional and major achievement of Gopi & his life. It is creating more personal touch. Each chapter, ending is giving it more simple touch & credibility. The book “SHUTTLER'S FLICK: Making Every Match Count” written by Priya Kumar is Puella Gopichand’s official autobiography which encompasses his tumultuous and inspirational journey and how he rose against the tide even when the odds were stacked against him. It throws light on what it takes to become a champion player in terms of self-discipline, strong commitment, and major lifestyle adjustments. I highly recommend this book to everyone especially youngsters since there are words of wisdom spread throughout the book which will help you progress and build up a never give up mindset. For instance, Give yourself the hardest time in practice and preparation. Life will respond in a kinder manner. Bring your mind into your job, 100 percent. If you have not made up your mind to do something, then your body will do everything to prevent you from getting there. Nothing can stop a man whose mind is made up and the smallest thing can stall a man who hasn’t made up his mind yet.
A player who aspires to become a champion needs to have a competitive spirit. It’s simple when you get into the game, if you have not beaten yourself on a daily basis with consistent improvements, no matter how small they may have been, you will not have the confidence to face your opponent. It is when you have self-mastery that you can look at world conquest. Sports levels up your attitude. You compete fair and square. The philosophy is, may the best man win. The indulgence of earning your titles and working hard for your victories is the domain of sports. Sports teaches you to lose with dignity. The author has done a brilliant job in terms of the writing and narration also being crisp to the point. The language is lucid and easy to understand as well. It is mindblowing how Gopichand has revolutionized the sport of Badminton in India and made it more mainstream. The book ends on a high note with this sentence - “Use sport to help you learn the way to build a good life. Keep playing.”
Indian Badminton had a very vast history in Indian sports. Not only nowadays players, such as Saina Nehwal, P.V. Sindhu are famous Badminton players but Prakash Padukone, Dinesh Khanna, Syed Modi, and Pullela Gopichand are the former players also notable in this field.
The title and cover picture of this book tell us that this book is based on Pullela Gopichand.
This book is the official autobiography of Gopichand sir. We read the biography to understand the hard work, to feel the motivation. And when a motivational author writes something like this, the combination made mind-blowing.
The book starts with the all England Championship which was won by Gopichand, the only second Indian badminton player after Padukon. After that championship, Gopichand becomes someone who recognizes. After it, he achieved many more.
The book tells how a hardworking player be a champion and after that, he also become a successful coach.
He received Arjuna Award as he was player as well as Dronacharya award exactly after 10 years, when he bocome a coach. Both awards which received by a GURU and a shishya. He also received Khelratna too.
He was also awarded the Padmashri, and the Padma Bhushan too
He is a successful coach cause he gives coaching to the Olympic winner Saina Nehwal and P.V.Sindhu.
The great book wrote about a great personality. This book is full of a basket of positivity and inspiration. Grab this.
I'm not usually very fond of sports or books about sports but make it an inspirational autobiography that too with the magical writing of Priya Kumar, and I'm game for it! Shuttler's Flick is one such book that I enjoyed reading.
Pullela Gopichand is a former Indian badminton player and presently the Chief National Coach for the Indian Badminton Team. When Pullela Gopichand had to undergo a risky arthroscopic surgery, chances of his full recovery were not great. Coming from that to becoming a champion himself and then the coach for many world champions, his journey is an amazing, inspirational and applaudable story.
So the book is a life story, the story of Gopichand's perseverance, about the game and has life lessons and motivational quotes as a serve from each chapter. The book is a delight to read, has the essence of self-help, the effect a motivational talk has on us. It's a no-nonsense book with essential exercises for the readers to gather their thoughts and jot them down in "The Making of a Champion" workbook that comes along with this masterpiece.
"With some lifestyle adjustments, hard work and resourcefulness, one can strive to build the resources needed to be on the way to your dreams"
This book shows the mindset and discipline of a successful man pullela Gopichand. In a ghostwriting style, the author stands in Gopi's shoes and screws the agenda of goals and success in the reader's mind. Reasonably delightful to read throughout the book.
From the perspective of a successful person, the value of self-discipline, problem-solving, self-analysing and the instinct for success had been incredibly imprinted.
Biography in the sense the author and Gopi have emitted the paradox of the goal and the aisle to reach the goal. In these bonded papers both of them screwed the proficiency of their experience towards success and failure.
Language is rational. Obviously, the implying strategies to accomplish your goals have been blueprinted I would say.
I recommend this book to all. Because a sportsman's life experience not only inspires and aids the sportsperson. Overall learning from the expert, in the sense, that this book has been the keynote of every desired person.
If you have never been exposed to the world of sports, the way I was the last 24 years of my life, then this is the perfect pick for you. I have been familiar with Priya Kumar's work for quite some time now and I assure you, she never disappoints.
The way the book picked up the pace right from the beginning is astounding. Life of Pullela Gopichand has been presented in an extremely transparent manner laced with motivational lessons from the same. What I loved the most was the "Your Serve" section of the chapters, where Kumar has summarised the content well in bite-sized snippets with lessons to last long.
Each chapter is then voiced by Gopichand himself which in itself was what kept me hooked to it longer. I also kept anticipating cameos from Gopichand's next of kin. This seemed nothing like the biographies that i have read my entire life of the rich and the famous. This felt close and personal, like a friend telling me their story with their family over a cup of tea.
Definitely a must read without even a second thought to it.
I have been familiar with Pullela Gopichand and his acumen solely because of my brother who is also a professional badminton player and for him, Gopichand Sir is an inspiration. So, when I got the chance to read this book, I grabbed it with both hands.
This book is a journey in itself and it has the power to jolt you out of whatever you are doing in your life at the moment, propelling you to introspect and channel out your inner champion. This book is overwhelming in a good way because it gives you a reality check and makes it very clear how tough and rough your path to success is going to be.
Discipline, grit, perseverance, accepting challenges, pushing your limits, constantly moving towards your goal despite failures are some of the biggest lessons this offered to me. On top of that, I have always appreciated Priya Kumar's style of writing, so that along with Pullela Gopichand’s words made this book a substantial and lesson-packed read.
The personal touch added by his wife, parents, and students was definitely an added perk to the autobiography. All in all, I am glad that I got a chance to read this book.
In 2001, Pullela Gopichand became the second Indian to win All England Championship. This is remembered as his highest achievement. But not many know the journey to reach here. In 1995, Gopichand injured his knee and had to undergo a risky arthroscopic surgery. Through this book the authors share Gopi's journey from not being able to walk to winning the most prestigious title in badminton, from player to a coach. Sports not only involve physical fitness and training but also mental strength. Through this book we get an understanding of what a sportsperson goes through during their training, their matches, their wins and losses. I really liked how after each chapter the author has summarized what we readers can take away from his journey. Enjoyed reading this one!
A player is not a player by birth but he becomes a player by hardwork and determination.
Badminton is a great sport for fitness and is very excellent for individuals of all age groups. We all know Phullela Gopichand. He did not start playing badminton until age 11, and he then played recreationally, not competitively. Slowly he started participating in local competition. He won the junior national championship at age 18 and the men’s national championship. He won the All England Open Badminton Championships in 2001 becoming the second Indian to achieve this feat after Prakash Padukone.
The more I write about him is the less, there comes Priya Kumar making it easier for everyone to know more about Phullela Gopichand and wrote a book on him. I loved the first person narrative in this book as if Gopichand himself was telling his story. The book has been written after thorough research and analysis, after meeting people closer to Gopichand. The writing style is very rich.
All nation take Pride in his contribution and achievement which he achieved worldwide.
A motivational book. Time to read more such biographies
Pullela Gopichand doesn't need an introduction not only among devoted badminton followers but among the general public too. He is a role model to many. Pullela Gopichand has been awarded the Arjuna Award, Dronacharya Award, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri, among many other prestigious awards.
Since my school days, I have been playing badminton, and reading about this inspiring journey was such a delight. This book is simply not his own recitation, but also has inputs from his mother, wife, students, and other players. The book is full of learning lessons, which seem general but can help a large crowd. The book covers him as a player and a mentor as well. Every page holds his hard work and the success that followed.
An ACL tear in 1994 and winning All England in 2001- He made it against all odds. Gopi was criticized by many for having an aggressive style of play that always put pressure on his knees. But this five-time national champion wasn't someone who would give up on what felt right to him. It was his determination and studious mind that not only helped him to be a talented player, but also a successful coach.
The book is well written and the cover does the perfect justice to what the book holds within. The small photo collection is a run-through of memories.
This book is a must-read for all aspiring people out there who are aiming to take up big challenges and are determined to achieve them. Currently, he is the Chief Nation Coach of the national badminton team.
Love ❤️, Noor. ------- Do you play any sport presently? Did you play one, in college/ school? Were you a keen player, an active participant in games as a kid? Do you think playing a sport, even a casual sport, helps in really amping up the spirits & keeping our mind & body, agile? ------- SHUTTLER'S FLICK: making every match count by @pullelagopichand @priyakumar7272 @simonandschusterin
Genre: #nonfiction / #autobiography -------- #newreleases2022 If you are not much into biographies & memoirs, i would recommend you try this one. It is an easy, quick read with beautiful + practical life lessons. Also, it's an easy read for beginners in this genre. ------- Abt the book: I read the hardcover version, around 350 pgs inclusive of coloured photographs (going through them actually gave me goosebumps). It was author- signed, so I loved it even more. Small small illustrations/ icons/ doodles throughout the book, were an added delight. There are 26 chapters & the title of each of them perfectly gives way to its content. I loved the epilogue. 2 bonus chapters at the end, were an icing on the cake. It is very well written & the content is systematically bifurcated for ease of understanding & invigorating the reader to question the self w.r.t. the matter given in each chapter. Also it clearly mentions the various POVs in each chapter. The takeaways at the end are really really helpful. Also the main idea in each chapter is repeated intentionally to make a lasting impact on the reader. Easy Lang. w/o beating around the bush. ------- This is an autobiography of a sports person & we may think that it would be about his sports & career & maynot interest a layman enough. But..it is actually more about Gopichand as an individual, more about his mindset, his learnings, his life lessons & how are they useful for us, as a reader.
Definately, it is also about how Gopichand became the World Champion after recovering from a career ruining injury. It is more about his journey than the destination he reached. It is about the qualities, the requisites behind making of a champion. It is about mind over matter, mental strength over physical abilities.
A total Game- Changer.👌 -------- Blurb: .'But the return is not always easy, especially when the world has moved on without you, when the people who were rooting for you have now found other heroes to support.'
When Pullela Gopichand had to undergo a risky arthroscopic surgery, chances of his full recovery were not great.
I just know Gopichand as the Chief Coach for the Indian Badminton team, recipient of several awards and reading this book gave me a greater insight into his life, from his childhood to the person he is today! The book starts with the narration of the events of the match between the Chinese Shuttler Chen Hong and Gopichand in 2001 and later moves on to his childhood and the subsequent journey. Two parts are covered in this book – his life as a player and then as a coach A major knee injury during the 1994 Pune National games left him shattered and had a long road to recovery. But he came back with a bang, becoming the second Indian to win the title at the All England Men’s Singles Championship. The snide remarks from his fellow players and well-wishers after the injury did not deter him and he showed great perseverance in getting back to form and this led to his win. The book not only tells you the life of Gopichand but also shows us what kind of person he was. His principles and practices, disciplined lifestyle, hard work are what made him the person he is today. He has shared a lot of leadership as well as life lessons in this book. Gopichands dedication and sincerity have given us a lot of medal-winning champions and he shares with us the secrets to his success and the paths that led to it. His family, right from his parents sacrificing a lot during his training years, to his wife, who is also a national champion, is the backbone to his success. Though he is a coach, his children train under different coaches at the Academy and he doesn’t discuss the game with them as he wants them to see him as a father rather than a coach. This book has styles of narration styles that make it an interesting read. A third-person narrative through author Priya Kumar’s voice and a first-person narrative through Gopichand’s voice. This gives us a view of what people around him thought and how Gopichand felt /what his emotions were at that particular situation. Apart from his view, we also get to read the views of his students, mentor, wife, and mother. There are photographs of his journey through his career as a player and as a coach. The ‘Your serve’ section after each chapter gives the reader snippets of knowledge and leadership goals/ quotes -something to make you a better person. The ‘Your solitude, Your Truth’ section has questions that need to be pondered. The Bonus Chapters- Physical Literacy and the Role of parents in preparing Champion is the icing on the cake. It is suitable not only for sportsperson but for everyone who is striving to be a champion in their field. Some of the quotes that I liked are – • No one can waste your time without your permission. • Use adversity to discover more of yourself. When everything is comfortable, there is no drive for change. • Get a coach, mentor, a guru. When in doubt, their timely advice, help, and perspective will save you years of setbacks. • When on the pedestal of success, work the hardest you have. • The odds will always be against you. This book would appeal to readers who enjoy reading about leadership, self-help, getting to know personalities, and someone interested in sports. A wonderful read that will give you a good account of the life and struggles of the Champion and also leave you with a lot of insights on how to be a better you and attain success.
Shuttlers Flick by Pullela Gopichand with Priya Kumar is an autobiography of a sportsperson who is a walking, talking institution in himself and how his journey started with badminton and what made me choose this sport. . While Gopichand shares his personal experiences and his learnings from them, at the same time Priya Kumar talks about the champion's life and what are the takeaways we can take from every chapter in his life. . Gopichand recounts his experience of his childhood and the struggles the player had to face in his life. . The discipline and the choice of living with only badminton in a large part of his life and how in January 1994 his dreadful knee injury did not stop him. . The determination and the teachings that the Badminton Coach gives to the reader is itself that will take you a long way. . Whenever I have read biographical accounts of eminent personalities they have written at a stretch the great things they have done but here Gopichand speaks just for half a page and he's given you advice that you will never forget. . Pullela Gopichand came from a very humble background and his parents have been an integral and one of the most important people who have made him reach where he stands today as a National Coach of the Indian Badminton Team. . As Priya Kumar narrates about Gopichand 's life, she also at the end of the story presents for you your serve , what can be your takeaway from this chapter in the National Coach's life. . Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu also write about Gopichand as a coach as both have trained under him. They give accounts of calmness and peaceful nature and how his teachings have always depended upon the temperament of the student under him and how he never endorsed the idea that "one size fits all". . The message of this book remains that this is not a book which wants you to become the next Pullela Gopichand but to find the champion within you! . As Priya Kumar narrates the stories of Gopichand 's youth and even after he retired from badminton you can sense the calmness and the serenity in the narrative because while his life has been eventful, his humble attitude can be noticed in the smallest of things he did as a player and still does. . I still remember when I used to play badminton in my childhood, as a sports enthusiast I could imagine the kind of physical and mental strength the champion must have gained by his consistent work with his body and mind. . This is a biography that you don't want to miss. There are few champions I have come across and in my book Gopichand is on the top and will remain on the top for a long time. . It's an achievement for India to have Pullela Gopichand etched forever in the history of the nation. . As Gopichand signs off . In Service Now and Forever

"People like to root for the underdog. When you have a champion in the arena, people want to see the newcomer win. They want to be entertained with a good game where the champion takes a beating, making way for a new one. You would think that because you're on a winning streak people are cheering for you. Often, the reverse is true. They have seen you win enough and want to see another player outdo you on court."
Shuttler's Flick: Making Every Match Count by Pullela Gopichand with Priya Kumar
This is the story of India's pride, Pullela Gopichand, a former badminton player and current Chief National Coach for the Indian Badminton team. He is the coach of Saina Nehwal, P V Sindhu, Srikanth Kidambi and soo many other famous Indian Olympians. This is the official autobiography of his, where we get to see Pullela in the field and out of it, we get to know of the ins and outs of his life directly from himself. It's been written by Pullela along with Priya Kumar. I'm not a person who regularly follows sports, but i do love to watch badminton in Olympics now and then, so when I got an opportunity to read the story of a sports person I not only knew but admired, I was soo excited. And the hype was true, this book narrates not only the story of Pullela as a player, but also of Pullela Gopichand as a person. We get to know about him from himself, his family, about how he managed to not only come back to the field from his life altering surgery but also get back to the top and later mentor some of the most talented badminton players of our country. Coming to the book itself, it's written very well, and has been researched thoroughly. It feels like we're going along with him through his life. And the book is not only about his story, but also about how we, the readers could apply the learnings in our life, to become a champion ourselves. Each chapter has a portion in the end where, the events from the chapter are turned into lessons for us to follow. Every chapter ends with questions for us to answer, which will make us look inside us to answer it. By the end of the book, you're truly much more inspired and informed about yourself as well. The book also has pictures of Pullela in several points of his life attached which I liked a lot, it added to the whole experience getting to see photos of the people I was reading about.
Pullela teaches us to keep playing no matter how many hurdles we have to jump, how many hindrances we have to face, keep playing. A must read for anyone who loves badminton Or otherwise because you'll end up loving it after reading this💗 There is no sports jargon language in this book, the language is very simple and to the point, therefore I definitely recommend this book to everyone❤️
#aotd - I would undeniably say that mine is Badminton. It's the only sport I happily play without any second thoughts, ignoring my schedule.
As a kid I have seen Pullela Gopichand in news for the champion and the coach he is, but I never knew the kind of person he is. And after reading this book, the respect I have for him has elevated and for days, I can't stop googling any videos or news about him. Such is the spirit he had instilled in me.
He is not the person who is driven by success, fame or money. He is that person who is driven by passion for the game rather than titles. Even if he loses a match, all he thinks is, if he gave his best or not. Stars like him needn't need an introduction but, we ought to know that, right from the roots, about the person we admire. And Pullela Gopichand deserves every ounce of it. I'm sure that you would feel the same after reading SHUTTLER'S FLICK.
The first half of the book talks about the journey of Gopichand right from his childhood. The story of how it all started, his passion for the game, his struggles, the support his family gave him, the roadblocks he encountered in his journey as a player to winning ALL ENGLAND CHAMPIONSHIP 2001 and not to forget, the failures and lessons which made him surpass every other player. Also the hardships faced by players in 20th century were explicitly narrated.
The second half marks the beginning of his career as coach. It isn't that easy to mentor players. The Academy he has built for budding players not only sprouted champions, but also took India to the world map of badminton. He excelled as a player as well as a coach and made the impossible possible coz he believes in himself.
With a glimpse of sportspersons life, Gopichand not only speaks of his journey with badminton but also motivates people to become the best version of themselves with discipline, resilience and consistency. The never ending love he has for badminton is keenly narrated. As written in the book - For Gopi, sport is life. One would feel this by the end and every moment you read about him. From struggling to play the game as a kid to becoming world champion and now delivering champions, his journey inspires us to the core.
And Priya kumar has done an excellent job by bringing Pullela Gopichand's story into light and kindling passion in readers. Her way of presenting the story, adding Gopichand's students his mother and wife's pov with valuable insights and questions added lustre to the entire book.
This book has now topped my favourites. I highly recommend this to every human out there!
This is one of those books I would go back to again and again because it is so inspiring and wonderful. A book where you learn about so many things! It helps you reflect on various topics and not just sports. Although I have to agree that I chose to get my hands on this book because it was something related to the well-known sport, ‘badminton’ and it has so many beautiful memories related to it. I had such high hopes from this book and let me tell you, it was a hardcover book (my first one!) and author signed. It just added to all the excitement. The book went beyond my expectations and I had a positive feeling towards the end of it. The book also has so many beautiful pictures which makes it all the more wonderful experience to read. -- The book is written from two different points of view. One the author and second is the famous 🏸 badminton player ‘Pullela Gopichand!’ The authors view is described first related to everything from Pullela’s childhood, his school days, practices, his struggles, how his family supported him, the injury he had, how he recovered from it, how he became a coach himself, his marriage, his family after that and so much more! Then Pullela’s point of view is written too. In his own words. The various strategies he used while playing the matches. How he made optimum utilisation of the resources he had, and never complained of not having enough but always found a way to practice every day and do whatever it took to be the best player. In this book, the author through her own POV and Pullela’s POV too also gives us an insight or rather a detailed description of how Gopi was as a student, a son, a player, a trainee, a coach, a husband and a father too. How Gopi used different ways to handle different players whom he used to coach. The reason why he did so and how it is important to understand the other person and help them accordingly. This is what made me understand a lot of things I was probably unaware of. I learnt the importance of understanding the other person's behaviour, mindset and other things too and only then decide the best help we can provide them or the best solution for them. -- This book is overloaded with lots of beautiful things to read, understand and learn from. You read this book at different stages of your lives and you’ll learn something new, something different and have a new perspective on many things. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I would recommend it to everyone. Whether you are interested in sports or not this book is a wonderful read! --
📕Shuttler's Flick: Making Every Match Count is published by @Simonsndschusterin India. The book is an autobiography of Pullela Gopichand, an Indian badminton player, and it is written with Priya Kumar.
ABOUT THE BOOK
📚"Shuttler's Flick" is an autobiography that promises to inspire and motivate readers. The book chronicles the journey of Pullela Gopichand, one of India's most accomplished badminton players and coaches, from a young boy with a passion for sports to becoming a national champion and eventually, a coach who has produced several world-class players.
📚As a reader, I found the book to be well-written and engaging. The title and cover alone are enough to pique anyone's interest, and Gopichand's writing is candid and relatable. The book offers insights into the world of competitive badminton, the politics involved, and the challenges that players face. Gopichand's passion for the sport and his unwavering determination to become the best are evident throughout the book.
One of the things that I loved about the book is how Gopichand's upbringing in a middle-class family in Hyderabad is portrayed vividly. His parents played a significant role in shaping his character and values, and this is evident in the way he talks about them. As someone who is also pursuing a goal in life, I found Gopichand's journey to be inspiring and motivating.
Another thing that stood out to me is how the latter half of the book focuses on Gopichand's transition from a player to a coach. He talks about the challenges he faced in setting up his academy, the players he has trained, and the impact he has had on Indian badminton. This was particularly inspiring to me, as it shows how one person can make a difference in the lives of others.
📚One of the most significant takeaways from the book is Gopichand's emphasis on the importance of hard work and dedication. He stresses that facilities and resources are not the only things that make champions, but rather the willingness to put in the hard work and commitment.
📚Overall, "Shuttler's Flick" is a must-read for anyone interested in sports, biographies, or Indian culture but I recommend specially to all the children . Gopichand's autobiography is a tribute to the grit and determination of Indian athletes who have to overcome several obstacles to achieve success.
It's all about Priya Kumar’s charm through her writing that I no longer think twice before picking up her nonfiction works. It doesn't utter you to follow a motivational book blindly by only highlighting success stories and more rather she blends and creates a perfect mixture of both genres. That helps a reader to understand nonfiction and helps to take away a wholehearted experience.
I decided to pick Shuttlers Flick up. It is about an incredible Indian badminton player and coach Mr. Pullela Gopichand. His hardship since childhood and what took him to reach where he is now, beautifully captures your eyes throughout the book. He had to go under scissors for a treacherous Arthroscopic surgery which eventually set him back from returning to Badminton. But the odds were in his favor. He proved this in 1998 and won bronze in the Commonwealth Games. 2001 was his biggest uplift, he became the second Indian to win the all-England championship. Of course, it didn't stop for him there, he set up a badminton academy, The Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy, that gave incredible players and became the world’s no.1. He even served as the Official Indian Olympic Badminton team coach in Rio Olympics and Tokyo Olympics.
He voices the wins, his journey, teachings, discipline, and principles, through which we all learn how to be constant in chasing our dreams. The writer met Pullela sir in person and pens down his voice as is. The book carries his voice as well as his mother, wife (former Olympian PVV Lakshmi), children (Gayathri and Sai Vishnu), and students who were his backbone throughout his life. He’s a Padmashri, Arjuna, Dronacharya, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, and Rashtriya Khel Protsaha Awardee. Welcome the preaching of him with open hands and devote it to your life.
Dive into the book to know how a champion is made. Last but not least Priya Kumar’s writing enhanced the essence a little more. Simple and thoughtful sentences could easily be gulped and implanted. I'm a big follower and admirer of Badminton and love to play it whenever get a chance. His point of view made the a journey little clear. As a student, I learned life teaching and sports lessons vigorously. Thank you to all the hard work behind the books that gave us the readers a masterpiece to cherish lifetime.

This book is a biography cum self-help book. This book has hit me really and inspired me to work towards my goal without thinking about the result, it taught me to compete with myself every day, to improve myself every day, it is me vs me. Shuttler's flick is autobiography of a great badminton player and coach Pullela Gopichand sir. He is presently the chief National Coach for the Indian badminton team.
When I heard the name of badminton for the first time, Pullella sir was one of the few people whose name I heard first. And today I got a chance to study his personality deeply by reading his biography.
This autobiography is not only for the purpose of sports enthusiasts but for people working in any field at any walk of life in general. The life of Gopichand sir is inspiring but the journey is not the easy one.
When Pullela Gopichand had to undergo a risky arthroscopic surgery, chances of his full recovery were slim. His return to the badminton court seemed a far fetched dream. The odds were stacked against him. Then, in 1998, he won the bronze medal in the Commonwealth Games. His biggest win was yet to come. In 2001, Pullela became the second Indian to win the All England Championship.
Pullela Gopichand writes post his All England Victory "the day you make recognition the primary agenda, it will backfire so strong, you may never recover from it."
The story of Pullela Gopichand is about reaching his aim after a lot of struggle. He has been very active in sports since the beginning. Be it cricket, badminton, or any other sport. Pullela writes that he chose badminton because the cost involved was the least to play.
What Pullela sir has emphasized throughout the book is that how so many people play at every level and how only a few people become champions and how do we move towards our goal.
Pullela sir has written through this book about the journey of his player first and then his coaching journey.
In 2008, he founded the Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy where he has trained world class badminton champions. Gopichand is married to former olympian PVV Lakshmi. He has been awarded the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, Arjuna, Dronacharya, Rajiv Gandhi khel Ratna and Rashtriya Khel Protsahan awards.
If I sum up this autobiography in one word, it will be "inspiring". Whenever you get a chance, you must read this book. I salute Gopichand sir for his dedication towards our country.
Book Title: Shuttler's Flick Author: Priya Kumar Publisher: Simon & Schuster India Format: Paperback Language: English Genre: Autobiography Pages: 367 Book Rating: 4/5
I always feel motivated when I discover a new book published by Priya Kumar. I am one of the fans of her way of writing. After writing a lot of motivational storybooks, now she started writing biography books of world-historic personalities. In 2014, she wrote a book on O.P Munjal and in 2021 on Vasu Shroff. Her latest book is an autobiography of Pullela Gopichand, a former Indian badminton player and since 2006 he is the chief national coach of the India national badminton team.
Apart from Gopichand's success as a sportsman, the book also covers his journey through his times of turmoil as well as his philosophy of life which is unknown to many. His mantra was never to be happy with success, no matter how big the achievement may be. In 1995, while playing doubles at the Pune National Games, he collided with his partner Vijay, resulting in a meniscal tear in his knee and a hemarthrosis ligament tear. He underwent knee surgery. No one thought of his return. But after nine months, he got back to the game. Through the twenty-six chapters, readers will get to know many such unknown insightful facts about this world champion as well as a world-class coach.
This book is not just for athletes and sportsmen, it is for all those who want to be champions and crave to win in their respective fields. Language of the book is inspirational. Book cover and title of the book are most promising. Readers can see some rare pictures of him in the book. Gopichand's interpretation of the same story has been included in each chapter after the author's narration. At the end of each chapter, some important life lessons are highlighted that will surely enlighten the champion in us. I recommend this book as a genuine motivational one. The only drawback of the book I noticed was that it was filled with many more inspiring sentences than his life story. If those portions were lessened, the length of the book would have been extensively reduced.
